responsibility. 00:01:03.439 --> 00:01:07.340 We're not just asking the parents to raise their children in the Lord. 00:01:07.459 --> 00:01:11.400 We, as a congregation, hold that responsibility as Today we will hear parents taking vows. 00:01:22.500 --> 00:01:26.819 But it reminds us that we are not just individual families here. 00:01:26.920 --> 00:01:30.359 We are a collective family with Because it's got two sides to it. 00:01:42.079 --> 00:01:48.280 When we're looking at the book of Ruth, we see family matters in the sense of what is going on in this family. 00:01:49.019 --> 00:02:26.039 --> 00:02:32.459 And the sense behind that proverb is that it's not just the burden on the parents to raise children. 00:02:32.460 --> 00:02:44.379 But the importance of a community actively engaged and encouraging in a positive way a safe place for children to be raised. 00:02:44.920 --> 00:02:47.060 And that's on us all. 00:02:47.460 --> 00:02:50.980 To make this a safe place for children to be raised. 00:02:51.080 --> 00:02:57.140 But above all, a place we want to see these children and all our children nurtured. 00:02:57.139 --> 00:03:00.159 And looked after that in a 00:04:19.360 So there was a great reminder to us there of what the blessing of baptism is. 00:04:19.360 --> 00:04:23.920 And especially in the last words, our engagement to be the Lord's. 00:04:23.920 --> 00:04:30.340 That is our longing for these children who will be baptized today, but for all our children, for all of us, 00:04:30.900 --> 00:04:33.500 our engagement to be the Lord's. 00:04:33.500 00:05:08.239 Set apart by itself, it is nice and appealing, but has nothing within it to compel. 00:05:08.240 --> 00:05:19.800 But place baptism against the backdrop of our sin and turn on the light of the cross and the jewel explodes with significance. 00:05:20.680 --> 00:05:25.000 It's not just a special day for families and these children. 00:05:25.759 --> 00:05:34.040 It's a reminder to us of our sin, the cost of it, but the price that has been paid at the cross. 00:05:34.040 --> 00:05:40.360 And that through the washing of our sin away, we have forgiveness with our Savior. 00:05:41.460 --> 00:05:47.300 And so today, this morning, we're going to look at the book of Ruth in this opening chapter. 00:05:48.140 --> 00:05:53.220 And we're going to see how it shows us the reality of which 00:06:18.439 And that's what we'll see here this morning from the book of Ruth. 00:06:18.959 --> 00:06:25.480 I want us to think of three things as we approach baptism that we see in these words before us. 00:06:26.180 --> 00:06:27.300 We see love. 00:06:27.300 --> 00:06:29.220 We see loyalty. 00:06:29.800 --> 00:06:31.439 And we see a legacy. 00:06:31.980 --> 00:06:35.079 Love, loyalty, and a legacy. 00:06:35.740 --> 00:06:38.120 So the first thing we see here is love. 00:06:39.939 --> 00:06:44.819 What's the setting for the book of Ruth, we might ask as we come into it? 00:06:45.220 --> 00:06:47.240 Well, it's not easy days. 00:06:47.780 --> 00:06:50.660 You see in the first verse there of chapter 1, 00:06:50.720 --> 00:06:52.960 in the days when the judges ruled. 00:06:52.959 --> 00:06:57.120 So it was at this time there was no king over the people. 00:06:57.299 --> 00:07:03.620 Instead, it was judges that were ruling and seeking to lead the people in what was right in the Lord. 00:07:04.620 --> 00:07:07.759 But it wasn't going well. 00:07:08.459 --> 00:07:09.419 They were failing. 00:07:10.339 --> 00:07:14.219 And Ian, if you have your Bibles open, you see the previous page. 00:07:14.339 --> 00:07:18.560 It's the last verse of the book of Judges, chapter 21. 00:07:18.560 --> 00:07:23.579 And look at the kind of setting that the book of Ruth is taking place in. 00:07:24.459 --> 00:07:25.339 Verse 25. 00:07:25.339 --> 00:07:28.600 In those days there was no king in Israel. 00:07:29.579 --> 00:07:34.060 Everyone did what was right in his own eyes. 00:07:34.060 --> 00:07:38.660 So that's the setting we have in the days when the judges ruled, 00:07:39.180 --> 00:07:42.379 as you see at the beginning of the book of Ruth. 00:07:43.439 --> 00:07:46.720 They did what was right in their own eyes. 00:07:46.819 --> 00:07:50.019 They weren't listening to what God was saying. 00:07:50.579 --> 00:07:51.540 There was no king. 00:07:52.160 --> 00:07:55.560 Everyone just did as they pleased themselves. 00:07:55.560 --> 00:08:03.199 And as you look at this in terms of a nation that was doing right in their own eyes, 00:08:03.300 --> 00:08:05.920 we see how it comes into families. 00:08:06.240 --> 00:08:09.160 And this family of Elimelech. 00:08:10.079 --> 00:08:12.860 That's where we pick up in the book of Ruth. 00:08:12.920 --> 00:08:16.220 And we see what doing right in our own eyes looks like, 00:08:16.639 --> 00:08:21.100 what it leads to, and how it calls us back to God. 00:08:21.100 --> 00:08:25.800 Ruth begins by saying to us, it was the days of the judges, 00:08:25.939 --> 00:08:29.420 and during these days there was a famine in the land. 00:08:30.280 --> 00:08:34.060 It wasn't just that there was a famine in the sense of these hard days, 00:08:34.139 --> 00:08:36.080 but this was God's judgment. 00:08:36.899 --> 00:08:41.379 People doing what was right in their own eyes has led to God sending a judgment, 00:08:41.480 --> 00:08:45.320 a judgment that is to bring the people back to him. 00:08:46.899 --> 00:08:48.779 But what do we see? 00:08:49.340 --> 00:08:50.420 Do they get it right? 00:08:50.419 --> 00:08:52.079 Do they do as they're meant to? 00:08:52.699 --> 00:08:56.519 Well, Elimelech and Naomi and their two sons, Malon and Chilion, 00:08:56.860 --> 00:09:00.860 who we join here as a family, they end up going to Moab. 00:09:01.419 --> 00:09:03.079 Did they do what was right? 00:09:04.319 --> 00:09:08.539 Well, what would any husband and father do in this kind of situation? 00:09:09.379 --> 00:09:10.019 There's a famine. 00:09:10.360 --> 00:09:11.360 There's no food. 00:09:11.519 --> 00:09:12.639 The family are suffering. 00:09:13.279 --> 00:09:16.759 Surely we would say, well, a loving father would take his family 00:09:16.759 --> 00:09:18.939 to a place where they could get food. 00:09:18.940 --> 00:09:22.140 And what we see is that is what he did. 00:09:22.280 --> 00:09:24.520 Elimelech takes them to Moab. 00:09:25.660 --> 00:09:31.140 But instead of being obedient, he was disobedient. 00:09:31.680 --> 00:09:33.460 You might ask, how? 00:09:34.500 --> 00:09:40.400 Well, what we see here is Elimelech doing what is right in his own eyes. 00:09:40.399 --> 00:09:45.519 His name means, my God is king. 00:09:45.679 --> 00:09:47.039 That's what Elimelech means. 00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:48.740 My God is king. 00:09:49.379 --> 00:09:51.299 But what do his actions show? 00:09:52.059 --> 00:09:55.139 His actions show, I do not trust my God is king. 00:09:55.319 --> 00:09:59.360 I do not trust that my God is able to help in this situation. 00:09:59.360 --> 00:10:05.379 And what we see as maybe, what we see as a loving decision to take his family to a place where there's food 00:10:05.379 --> 00:10:09.180 is actually taking them away from God. 00:10:09.620 --> 00:10:13.860 Moab was a place of pagan gods, false gods. 00:10:13.860 --> 00:10:20.100 And when we look at the world in which we live and the world in which we are raising our children, 00:10:20.480 --> 00:10:23.580 these are the very challenges that we see all around us. 00:10:24.240 --> 00:10:26.899 The people doing right in their own eyes. 00:10:27.300 --> 00:10:28.680 No thought for God. 00:10:28.899 --> 00:10:33.019 Not just on a national scale, but families, individuals. 00:10:33.800 --> 00:10:36.740 We'll do things our own way. 00:10:36.740 --> 00:10:43.960 So instead of addressing the problem, they have sinned against God, 00:10:44.360 --> 00:10:48.139 he takes things into his own hands and goes away. 00:10:48.480 --> 00:10:50.419 Goes away to Moab. 00:10:51.259 --> 00:10:54.799 You could say it's a bit like having a boat that's leaking. 00:10:56.120 --> 00:10:57.360 It's leaking all the time. 00:11:22.540 He's looking for a way to care for his family and love his family, 00:11:22.540 --> 00:11:24.460 but he's going the wrong way. 00:11:25.360 --> 00:11:28.300 Instead of looking at the sin in his own heart 00:11:28.300 --> 00:11:30.000 and the sin of the people around him, 00:11:30.340 --> 00:11:32.540 he goes away from God. 00:11:32.539 --> 00:11:35.879 And here is the challenge to us today. 00:11:37.199 --> 00:11:39.599 We love our children. 00:11:40.579 --> 00:11:42.919 And we want what's best for them. 00:11:43.519 --> 00:11:49.079 But how do we love our children in a world where Christ and his word are not central? 00:11:49.959 --> 00:11:51.759 That's the challenge to us. 00:11:52.259 --> 00:11:56.259 It is to love the Lord first and foremost. 00:11:56.259 --> 00:11:59.679 It's not to do what is right in our own eyes, 00:11:59.819 --> 00:12:03.240 but to do what is right according to the word of God. 00:12:03.319 --> 00:12:04.819 It would be easy to say for our children, 00:12:04.919 --> 00:12:06.899 we just long for them to be happy, 00:12:07.179 --> 00:12:09.279 to find their own way, 00:12:09.360 --> 00:12:10.500 to be themselves. 00:12:11.879 --> 00:12:13.340 But is that loving them? 00:12:14.299 --> 00:12:17.700 Elimelech thought he was loving his family by going to Moab, 00:12:17.759 --> 00:12:19.779 but he was taking them away from God. 00:12:19.779 --> 00:12:26.120 So our way of raising our children is not just to seek their own freedom, 00:12:26.120 --> 00:12:27.199 to be themselves, 00:12:27.419 --> 00:12:28.419 to do as they please, 00:12:28.500 --> 00:12:29.539 along as they're happy. 00:12:29.899 --> 00:12:33.519 It is to guide them in the ways of the Lord. 00:12:34.500 --> 00:12:38.579 Because one of the questions asked of the parents today is, 00:12:38.679 --> 00:12:43.299 do you promise to bring up this child in the nurture and training of the Lord? 00:12:43.299 --> 00:12:46.079 It's a vow that's being taken, 00:12:46.659 --> 00:12:49.419 a vow that we engage with as a family in the church 00:12:49.419 --> 00:12:51.139 to encourage this, 00:12:51.240 --> 00:12:52.179 to enable this, 00:12:52.299 --> 00:12:56.639 to raise and nurture these children in the training of the Lord, 00:12:56.959 --> 00:13:01.179 so that we would love them by showing them the Lord. 00:13:02.979 --> 00:13:04.620 The name Martin, 00:13:05.699 --> 00:13:08.099 behind that name is Warrior. 00:13:08.100 --> 00:13:11.300 The name Iris, 00:13:11.680 --> 00:13:14.340 behind that name is Rainbow, 00:13:14.940 --> 00:13:15.820 or Hope. 00:13:17.060 --> 00:13:20.460 And wouldn't it be wonderful to love these children, 00:13:20.620 --> 00:13:23.240 to see them becoming warriors for the Lord, 00:13:23.720 --> 00:13:25.960 and ones that hope in the Lord. 00:13:27.200 --> 00:13:29.580 We love our children dearly. 00:13:29.659 --> 00:13:31.180 They are precious to us. 00:13:31.540 --> 00:13:34.620 But it's not just the sense of God on them, 00:13:42.319 --> 00:13:43.199 by loving them, 00:13:43.279 --> 00:13:46.819 by showing the ways of the Lord. 00:13:47.199 --> 00:13:51.039 To love is not to do what is right in our own eyes, 00:13:51.899 --> 00:13:54.579 but to seek the ways of the Lord. 00:13:55.719 --> 00:13:58.359 The second thing we see here is loyalty. 00:13:59.299 --> 00:14:01.039 As the story goes on in Ruth, 00:14:01.139 --> 00:14:04.579 we see family life is one of mixed emotions. 00:14:04.580 --> 00:14:06.879 There's a lot of sadness in this book, 00:14:06.940 --> 00:14:08.540 especially in the opening chapter, 00:14:08.820 --> 00:14:11.400 when you see Naomi suffering grief, 00:14:11.480 --> 00:14:13.980 and losing her husband and her two sons. 00:14:14.320 --> 00:14:15.740 There's a lot of sorrow. 00:14:16.740 --> 00:14:18.200 But in the midst of this, 00:14:18.379 --> 00:14:20.200 God shows grace. 00:14:21.200 --> 00:14:22.620 When you look at verse 6, 00:14:22.620 --> 00:14:30.019 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law to return from the country of Moab, 00:14:30.480 --> 00:14:33.659 for she had heard in the fields of Moab 00:14:33.659 --> 00:14:38.039 that the Lord had visited and given them food. 00:14:38.419 --> 00:14:40.700 So this is back in our own country. 00:14:40.779 --> 00:14:43.779 The Lord had visited and given them food. 00:14:43.940 --> 00:14:45.700 God had been gracious. 00:14:45.700 --> 00:14:50.960 And this is the point in the story where there's a sense of turning, 00:14:51.840 --> 00:14:53.940 returning and renewing. 00:14:54.400 --> 00:14:56.259 But
