to strike a deal, agreeing to betray his friend. 00:00:23.920 --> 00:00:33.460 We sat at the table with Jesus and his disciples where he broke bread and spoke of what his death would accomplish. 00:00:34.520 --> 00:00:42.460 We entered the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed in deep anguish, surrendering to his Father's will. 00:00:44.520 --> 00:00:51.400 There we witnessed the disciples' bold promises of loyalty, promises that would soon falter. 00:00:51.399 --> 00:00:58.679 And under the cover of darkness, Judas returned with an armed crowd and Jesus was taken captive. 00:01:01.280 when asked directly, Jesus made the good confession that he was the Messiah. 00:01:18.500 --> 00:01:20.519 Words they called blasphemy. 00:01:21.400 --> 00:01:24.660 At daybreak, they led him before Pilate. 00:01:25.880 --> 00:01:33.920 And even though Pilate declared Jesus innocent, he bowed to the pressure of the crowd and handed Jesus over to be executed. 00:01:33.920 --> 00:01:49.700 We read of the flogging and the mocking, the procession out to Golgotha, the crucifixion, the taunts and the jeers of the bystanders. 00:01:49.700 --> 00:01:58.520 And we heard Jesus' loud cry, my God, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 00:01:58.519 --> 00:02:07.000 And with another loud cry, Jesus breathed his last and gave up his spirit. 00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:16.620 We heard about Joseph of Arimathea and how he got permission to bury Jesus' body in his own tomb. 00:02:17.500 --> 00:02:26.920 And a large stone was rolled into place over the entrance and a guard set by the rulers to keep watch. 00:02:26.919 --> 00:02:30.679 It was a horrible and tragic day. 00:02:31.399 --> 00:02:35.500 But as we just heard sung, all was not lost. 00:02:36.179 --> 00:02:40.519 There was a great and mighty purpose of God in the death of Jesus. 00:02:41.739 --> 00:02:46.859 Forgiveness for humanity was bought with Jesus' blood. 00:02:46.860 --> 00:02:53.080 And this forgiveness was offered freely to all, to you and to me. 00:02:54.260 --> 00:02:59.300 And it's all because of the great mercy and love of God toward us. 00:03:00.360 --> 00:03:03.540 Just as it says in Ephesians chapter 1, 00:03:04.300 --> 00:03:07.920 In him, in Jesus Christ, we have redemption. 00:03:07.919 --> 00:03:17.019 Through his blood, the forgiveness of sins in accordance with the riches of God's grace, and tragic day, 00:04:06.120 --> 00:04:08.480 but all was not lost. 00:04:08.900 --> 00:04:16.199 It was a day of costly sacrifice that became for us the day of our deliverance and salvation. 00:04:16.199 --> 00:04:23.639 And what I love about this true story is that it didn't end with death and tragedy. 00:04:25.139 --> 00:04:27.459 Reading from Matthew chapter 28 verse 1. 00:04:27.459 --> 00:04:42.599 So Matthew tells us that some time passed while Jesus' body lay lifeless in the tomb. 00:04:42.740 --> 00:04:47.500 There was the Sabbath day, which was the seventh day of the week on which no one worked. 00:04:47.500 --> 00:04:50.579 And then following that was the first day of the week. 00:04:51.860 --> 00:04:58.500 Matthew tells us that two of the Marys who had been close followers of Jesus went to look at the tomb. 00:04:58.500 --> 00:05:07.779 There was a violent earthquake for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and going to the tomb, 00:05:07.779 --> 00:05:11.459 rolled back the stone and sat on it. 00:05:12.560 --> 00:05:14.000 Can you imagine this? 00:05:14.660 --> 00:05:21.160 You're on your way to the tomb and the ground begins to tremble violently. 00:05:22.600 --> 00:05:27.240 Matthew tells us that the cause of the quake was the angel. 00:05:27.240 --> 00:05:36.360 He says there was a violent earthquake for or because an angel of the Lord came down from heaven. 00:05:38.040 --> 00:05:40.879 Imagine him streaking down like a bolt of lightning. 00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:49.500 By how it's described, it would seem that almost the impact of his arrival just sent a shockwave through the ground. 00:05:50.920 --> 00:05:52.939 And what did this angel look like? 00:05:52.939 --> 00:06:01.079 Matthew says that his appearance was like lightning and his clothes were white as snow. 00:06:02.339 --> 00:06:05.000 Think back to the last time you saw a flash of lightning. 00:06:05.860 --> 00:06:08.199 It's amazing just how bright it is. 00:06:09.300 --> 00:06:15.079 And so we imagine this angelic being so bright that you can barely stand to look at him. 00:06:15.079 --> 00:06:25.599 Matthew says he went to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 00:06:25.600 --> 00:06:34.520 The whole point of the large stone was to seal the opening to the tomb and to keep people out. 00:06:35.600 --> 00:06:39.439 And so there's little doubt that this would have been a very large and heavy stone. 00:06:39.920 --> 00:06:43.960 We don't know exactly what it looked like or how big it was or how heavy. 00:06:44.100 --> 00:06:48.780 But likely it couldn't be budged by just one person or a few people. 00:06:48.779 --> 00:06:56.819 And so the strength of this angel of God is seen in his ability to single-handedly push it back from the entrance to the tomb. 00:06:58.459 --> 00:07:08.979 The appearance of this angel and the demonstration of his power was enough to make grown men shrivel in the fetal position on the ground. the law, 00:10:06.080 --> 00:10:10.960 and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. 00:10:12.040 --> 00:10:16.200 The sense we get from this is that Jesus has already been saying happened 00:15:24.539 --> 00:15:27.560 that morning when God brought Jesus back to life. 00:15:28.419 --> 00:15:30.220 And it's a precious story. 00:15:31.279 --> 00:15:33.480 One of the things that caught my attention this week 00:15:33.480 --> 00:15:34.960 as I was meditating on this 00:15:34.960 --> 00:15:39.019 is how different Matthew's account is from Luke's. 00:15:39.019 --> 00:15:42.740 Luke tells us about a whole bunch more 00:15:42.740 --> 00:15:44.220 that happened that day. 00:15:45.139 --> 00:15:48.600 Luke tells us about how Jesus appeared to Peter after this 00:15:48.600 --> 00:15:52.019 and then to two men walking on the road to Emmaus 00:15:52.019 --> 00:15:54.659 and then about how Jesus later that evening 00:15:54.659 --> 00:15:56.639 appeared to the disciples themselves 00:15:56.639 --> 00:15:59.779 in Jerusalem behind closed doors. 00:16:00.679 --> 00:16:02.139 And then only after that 00:16:02.139 --> 00:16:03.919 would they all make their way out to Galilee. 00:16:03.919 --> 00:16:06.779 But I got thinking about this. 00:16:07.159 --> 00:16:09.299 Why did Matthew leave all that out? 00:16:10.759 --> 00:16:12.860 What's Matthew's focus here? of a person from the dead, 00:17:47.660 --> 00:17:49.819 somebody that everybody had seen 00:17:49.819 --> 00:17:51.619 publicly killed. 00:17:53.279 --> 00:17:54.419 He just told us 00:17:54.419 --> 00:17:55.259 about how these women 00:17:55.259 --> 00:17:56.139 had an encounter 00:17:56.139 --> 00:17:58.039 with this resurrected man. 00:17:58.740 --> 00:17:59.519 And ordinarily, 00:17:59.659 00:18:18.279 can we really trust 00:18:18.279 --> 00:18:19.199 the word of the women? 00:18:20.500 --> 00:18:21.500 Like an angel? 00:18:23.419 --> 00:18:24.679 Risen from the dead? 00:18:26.639 -->
