interesting. 00:07:21.699 --> 00:07:24.879 These words are just as significant as the major prophets. 00:07:24.879 --> 00:07:34.639 In fact, Zephaniah, as he writes this small prophecy to Israel, to Jerusalem in the time of Isaiah. 00:07:35.920 --> 00:07:40.480 He begins it by saying the word of the Lord. 00:07:40.480 --> 00:07:43.040 And then he ends it. 00:07:43.100 --> 00:07:46.120 His very last words are, says the Lord. 00:07:47.640 --> 00:07:56.560 And he's trying to make us notice that what they're about to hear is not words of some little preacher. 00:07:58.720 --> 00:08:00.420 These are words from God himself. 00:08:00.420 --> 00:08:05.400 So, these are not words that we can just write off. 00:08:06.400 --> 00:08:09.319 We can just, well, if they're interesting, I'll listen and pay attention. 00:08:09.600 --> 00:08:10.240 He says, no. 00:08:12.879 --> 00:08:18.120 These are words from the author of all scripture. 00:08:19.220 --> 00:08:24.639 These are the words from the creator, the redeemer, the holy one. 00:08:24.639 --> 00:08:34.799 And so, for all of us, for them and for us, we need to pay great attention. 00:08:35.980 --> 00:08:43.500 And I appreciated how Derek began this study of Zephaniah last week as he brought out the very two aspects, 00:08:43.679 --> 00:08:51.039 very contrasting, but yet very complementary aspects of the God that we see in here. 00:08:51.039 --> 00:09:03.199 And on one hand, we see, as in so many of the prophecies, a very hard side of God, a harsh side, the just side, 00:09:03.339 --> 00:09:08.439 where he calls out sin, he calls out people to repentance, he calls out their idolatry. 00:09:08.959 --> 00:09:12.279 And he brings his judgment upon it. 00:09:12.279 --> 00:09:24.539 But then there's, at the same time, we don't see this judgment outside of hope for redemption. 00:09:27.039 --> 00:09:30.600 And Zephaniah is such a good example of that. 00:09:31.179 --> 00:09:37.959 We see some very, very harsh words spoken to all of the Jews still in Jerusalem. 00:09:37.960 --> 00:09:50.120 But at the same time, when we get to the end, we see some of the most hopeful, some of the most glorious words that we'll find anywhere in the scriptures. 00:09:51.720 --> 00:09:53.740 And all of these are wedded together. 00:09:54.800 --> 00:09:56.840 Because this is the God that we worship. 00:09:57.879 --> the Lord for God's people. 00:10:28.039 --> 00:10:33.559 And then finally, we're going to see the day of the Lord for God's son. 00:10:35.199 --> 00:10:36.399 Let's look at the first point. 00:10:36.500 --> 00:10:37.799 The day of the Lord for the nations. 00:10:37.959 --> 00:10:40.259 The day of the Lord being that central theme. 00:10:40.639 --> 00:10:42.079 What is the day of the Lord? 00:10:42.959 --> 00:10:54.939 The day of the Lord is this day that Israel was promised and they looked forward to when God would come and make everything right. 00:10:54.940 --> 00:10:59.480 That he would return to his people. 00:11:00.160 --> 00:11:04.840 He would come to them in their midst and he would bring his justice. 00:11:05.160 --> 00:11:09.120 All of their enemies who were oppressing them would be done away with. 00:11:09.680 --> 00:11:13.600 They would be set free from all of those nations around them. 00:11:14.460 --> 00:11:16.360 And they would know shalom. 00:11:16.900 --> 00:11:20.100 That shalom that God had promised them. 00:11:21.140 --> 00:11:23.100 That he would bring. 00:11:23.100 --> 00:11:29.740 And this is the sense of where we begin in chapter 2 verse 4. 00:11:31.019 --> 00:11:34.379 In chapter 2 verse 4 to the end of the chapter. 00:11:35.019 --> 00:11:41.940 We see Zephaniah laying out what God is going to do among the nations. directions of the compass. 00:11:54.519 --> 00:11:56.399 Moab and Ammon to the east. 00:11:57.480 --> 00:11:59.519 You've got Philistia to the west. 00:12:00.579 --> 00:12:03.679 You have Cush to the south. 00:12:04.799 --> 00:12:07.059 And then Assyria to the north. 00:12:07.059 --> 00:12:09.179 And the message is this. 00:12:09.299 --> 00:12:10.739 When God comes. 00:12:11.219 --> 00:12:13.659 When he comes to make things right. 00:12:13.739 --> 00:12:14.979 All of these nations. 00:12:15.159 --> 00:12:16.579 And he only picks out four. 00:12:16.739 --> 00:12:20.119 But he picks them out
