again and again and again that he is after our full, wholehearted obedience to God's perfect holiness, 00:02:59.459 --> 00:03:02.180 not just our obedience to the surface. 00:03:02.180 --> 00:03:11.040 So now, let's hear in Matthew 6 how Jesus is going to continue to call us into our Father's holy perfection, 00:03:11.240 --> 00:03:13.719 but he's going to do it in a slightly different 00:03:19.580 --> 00:03:49.560 Verse 49. 00:03:49.580 --> 00:04:11.920 As we saw last week and for the past month or two, 00:04:11.919 --> 00:04:19.779 Jesus has been calling us to a full-on imitation of his Father's infinite holiness. 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:23.319 Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. 00:04:23.419 --> 00:04:24.879 But now Jesus is turning a corner. 00:04:26.019 --> 00:04:29.879 He's going to call us to that same imitation of God's perfect holiness, 00:04:30.060 --> 00:04:32.819 but in another area of our lives that might surprise us. 00:04:33.959 --> 00:04:39.719 In our acts of devotion and service to God. 00:04:39.720 --> 00:04:41.340 That's right. 00:04:41.780 --> 00:04:46.640 Our spiritual disciplines, our godly habits, our good deeds of righteous living, 00:04:46.980 --> 00:04:51.920 these are all the right things that Christians are called to do. 00:04:52.780 --> 00:04:57.320 But even these things, and perhaps especially these things, 00:04:57.720 --> 00:05:01.280 are in danger. 00:05:01.279 --> 00:05:05.099 They are in danger of being done for the wrong reason. 00:05:06.179 --> 00:05:09.379 Because of the deceptiveness of our sinful hearts. 00:05:09.479 --> 00:05:13.619 So in this passage, Jesus is telling his kingdom citizens 00:05:13.619 --> 00:05:20.659 to perform their acts of devotion with only one holy aim, all of our acts of godliness, 00:05:30.839 --> 00:05:34.699 whether giving, prayer, fasting, Bible reading, singing, songs of worship, 00:05:34.899 --> 00:05:37.920 all of them with one holy aim, 00:05:38.199 --> 00:05:40.259 and that is to please our heavenly Father, nothing else. 00:05:41.920 --> 00:05:44.779 This is the principle that we see in verse 1. 00:05:45.639 --> 00:05:47.000 I'll expound it in just a second. 00:05:47.000 --> 00:05:50.639 We're also going to see that there's a practice of this principle 00:05:50.639 --> 00:05:51.860 that's being spelled out, 00:05:52.060 --> --> 00:07:28.660 you're the light of the world. 00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:30.100 You're the salt of the earth. 00:07:30.939 --> 00:07:32.620 So because you're the light of the world, 00:07:32.840 --> 00:07:33.720 in the same way, 00:07:33.840 --> 00:07:36.000 let your light shine before others 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:38.100 so that they may see your good works. 00:07:38.100 --> 00:07:39.960 They're the words of one commentator, 00:09:41.680 --> 00:09:43.240 as soon as Jesus gives the command, 00:09:43.400 --> 00:09:44.000 be perfect, 00:09:44.519 --> 00:09:46.200 he turns right around and tells us, 00:09:46.379 --> 00:09:46.860 be careful. 00:09:48.460 --> 00:09:51.500 He knows that as soon as we begin pursuing the perfection 00:09:51.500 --> 00:09:52.860 of our Father's holiness, 00:09:53.300 --> 00:09:56.980 we will be tempted to hijack that pursuit of holiness 00:09:56.980 --> 00:09:59.980 and put it to use in the service of self, 00:10:00.580 --> 00:10:02.240 not in the like to hijack 00:10:25.639 --> 00:10:27.580 the right things of the kingdom of God 00:10:27.580 --> 00:10:29.939 and use them to build the kingdom of self. 00:10:31.740 --> 00:10:33.799 Jesus knows to please your Heavenly Father. 00:11:20.919 --> 00:11:23.439 That's the principle. 00:11:24.439 --> 00:11:25.699 Now, let's look at the practice 00:11:25.699 --> 00:11:26.500 of that principle 00:12:36.159 as a motivation to give generously. 00:12:36.679 --> 00:12:38.039 There was a collection going up 00:12:38.039 --> 00:12:39.279 for the needy brothers and sisters 00:12:39.279 --> 00:12:39.879 in Jerusalem 00:12:39.879 --> 00:12:42.439 and he was appealing 00:12:42.439 --> 00:12:45.860 to the Corinthians' experience 00:12:45.860 --> 00:12:47.519 of God's grace on their behalf,
