mission. 00:01:42.019 --> 00:01:47.579 And that was to reach the South Pole for the first time. 00:01:49.019 --> 00:01:51.340 And there were two groups that I mentioned. 00:01:51.459 --> 00:01:55.060 The first group was led by the Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen. 00:01:55.699 --> 00:02:02.340 And that group was spectacularly successful, mainly due to the leadership of the Norwegian explorer. 00:02:02.340 --> 00:02:06.799 And he had planned meticulously for the trip. 00:02:06.980 --> 00:02:17.980 So he researched the habits of Eskimos and learned that they use dogs for pulling the sleds in the cold climate. 00:02:17.980 --> 00:02:21.159 Because the dogs don't have sweat glands and they're very resilient in the cold. 00:02:21.159 --> 00:02:28.819 So they used dogs to, and so using, looking at that idea, he said, okay, we're going to have sleds that are going to be pulled by dogs. 00:02:29.439 --> 00:02:38.599 And we're going to have these foods and supplies deployed at appropriate junctures throughout the journey so that they don't have to carry everything themselves. 00:02:38.599 --> 00:02:41.819 And so all of that, you know, went flawlessly. 00:02:42.299 --> that's exactly why, after talking last week, Peter telling us that we are now in the judgment of God. 00:04:17.759 --> 00:04:21.240 God's people are being, in the, experiencing the judgment of God. reason, it's going to be difficult for Christians to make it to the end of their journey. 00:04:32.639 --> 00:04:35.439 It's going to be difficult for Christians to persevere to the end. 00:04:35.959 --> 00:04:41.379 It's with difficulty, it says, scarcely believers will be saved, it said in that passage in 1 Peter. 00:04:42.419 --> 00:04:46.099 But that's why Peter continues with so, in verse 1 here. 00:04:46.100 --> 00:05:08.180 In order to ensure that the church perseveres to the end, Peter's giving here specific instructions on the way the church is going to get there. 00:05:08.280 --> 00:05:09.580 How the church is going to persevere. 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:14.600 And the relationship between the elders and the church members is an essential part of that. 00:05:14.600 --> 00:05:24.360 Namely, I think he teaches us this, that the elders humbly shepherd and the people humbly follow the members together under the lordship of Christ. 00:05:25.560 --> 00:05:27.480 I think that's what he's trying to teach us. 00:05:27.580 --> 00:05:32.720 And I'm going to first highlight the role of the shepherds and then the role of the sheep and then the chief shepherd. 00:05:32.840 --> 00:05:35.939 So that's the outline that I'm going to follow as I preach to you from this passage. 00:05:36.720 --> 00:05:38.760 So 1 Peter addresses the shepherds. 00:05:38.879 --> 00:05:40.740 Turn with me to verses 1 to 2. 00:05:40.740 --> 00:05:48.980 So in the context of suffering, the shepherds have an even more imperative charge to shepherd God's people, the elders. 00:05:49.439 --> 00:05:53.180 So verses 1 to 2, it begins with the exhortation to elders. 00:05:54.120 --> 00:05:58.740 And you see here the three terms that are used generally to refer to the leaders of the church. 00:05:59.060 --> 00:06:01.180 First, it says elders, right? 00:06:01.259 --> 00:06:04.100 And then second, it tells the elders to shepherd the flock of God. 00:06:04.319 --> 00:06:06.879 So that's another word for pastor, a shepherd, pastor. 00:06:06.879 --> 00:06:10.680 And then third, it says exercise oversight, right, in verse 2. 00:06:11.060 --> 00:06:14.759 And oversight is the word that sometimes gets translated as bishop, right? 00:06:15.259 --> 00:06:18.620 So you see here pastor, bishop, elder, right? 00:06:18.800 --> 00:06:19.540 The three terms. 00:06:19.620 --> 00:06:21.839 And they're used interchangeably throughout the New Testament. 00:06:22.439 --> 00:06:25.899 So you see that, for example, in Acts 20, 28, where Paul says, 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:30.879 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock in which the Holy Spirit made you overseers. 00:06:31.480 --> 00:06:35.519 Now he's talking to the elders to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. 00:06:35.519 --> 00:06:43.339 So we see here and in 1 Peter, our passage, that the elders are the pastors, the shepherds, and they are the bishops. 00:06:43.939 --> 00:06:51.719 And that's why in our church and in our denomination, we don't have separate offices of pastors and then elders and then bishops like some churches and denominations do. 00:06:52.299 --> 00:06:59.000 We believe that they're all interchangeable titles that highlight different aspects of a single office, of the same office. 00:06:59.000 --> 00:07:04.660 There is significant conceptual overlap because it's all referring to the same office. 00:07:05.160 --> 00:07:10.060 But the term elder specifically highlights mature and wise teaching, right? 00:07:10.279 --> 00:07:19.279 So if you look at the history of the Jews as God's people, they had men who were heads of households that gathered at the gates of the city 00:07:19.279 --> 00:07:24.100 and made decisions and leadership decisions for the community, right? 00:07:24.100 --> 00:07:30.620 And the church, when it came up in the New Testament, took over this pattern. 00:07:31.140 --> 00:07:35.820 And so that they also had elders who were mature and to become leaders of the church. 00:07:36.240 --> 00:07:41.900 Now, it's very easy to confuse this to think that, oh, maybe then elders are just older people in the church, right? 00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:44.379 Because the word can also mean that. 00:07:45.740 --> 00:07:50.500 But I don't think that that's what Peter is intending to say to us here for several reasons. 00:07:50.500 --> 00:07:58.720 And first is if it's simply a matter of how old the people are, right, then it immediately raises the question of how old do you have to be, right? 00:07:59.300 --> 00:08:05.699 And Peter doesn't anywhere answer that question, nor does anybody else in the Bible, right? 00:08:05.740 --> 00:08:10.660 If that were indeed the case, if being elder just means being older, they should tell you how old they're supposed to be. 00:08:10.680 --> 00:08:11.180 But they don't. 00:08:11.420 --> 00:08:12.220 They don't deal with that. 00:08:12.220 --> 00:08:16.880 And the second issue is that the apostles tell people to appoint elders. 00:08:17.120 --> 00:08:21.740 So Paul tells Titus in chapter 1, verse 5, to appoint elders in every town. 00:08:22.620 --> 00:08:29.160 And then if you're supposed to appoint elders, I mean, if you become an elder simply by virtue of being old, 00:08:29.540 --> 00:08:31.980 then you don't need to appoint them because they're already elders. 00:08:32.200 --> 00:08:33.080 They're already old, right? 00:08:33.300 --> 00:08:37.700 So it's the fact that you need to be appointed points to a specific office. 00:08:37.960 --> 00:08:40.300 It's a recognized official office, right? 00:08:40.299 --> 00:08:45.240 And then lastly, Paul and others give qualifications for elders, right? 00:08:45.500 --> 00:08:51.719 Once again, if being an elder means being an older person in the church, then there doesn't need to be qualifications, right? 00:08:51.979 --> 00:08:54.799 Age itself is the sole qualification, right? 00:08:54.859 --> 00:09:01.459 So all of these, I think, point to the fact that Peter is here referring to people who were generally older in age, 00:09:01.639 --> 00:09:05.479 but those who more specifically were mature and wise in their faith. 00:09:05.819 --> 00:09:09.479 And because of that, were recognized and appointed to serve in the church as leaders. 00:09:09.480 --> 00:09:11.159 So those are the elders. 00:09:12.139 --> 00:09:18.279 And I grew up in a Korean church, and my dad is also a pastor of a Korean church. 00:09:18.519 --> 00:09:21.800 So I kind of saw some of the abuses of this. 00:09:22.060 --> 00:09:26.700 And the reason why is this is because when Christianity first went into Korea, 00:09:26.860 --> 00:09:29.440 they didn't contextualize this idea of elders very well. 00:09:29.440 --> 00:09:37.020 So instead of following the biblical qualifications for elders, they simply followed their confusion practice of just respecting elders 00:09:37.020 --> 00:09:39.520 and letting them make decisions and rule the community. 00:09:40.400 --> 00:09:43.980 So simply by being older, they became elders of the church. 00:09:44.580 --> 00:09:49.980 And because of that, a lot of Korean churches, you find a lot of posturing and bickering, power grabbing, 00:09:50.540 --> 00:09:54.080 because not all the elders are actually mature and wise believers, right? 00:09:54.080 --> 00:09:57.460 And so that's the importance of this. 00:09:57.560 --> 00:10:00.540 And this is not to deny that, generally speaking, maturity comes with age. 00:10:00.560 --> 00:10:01.879 It does, right? 00:10:02.180 --> 00:10:03.080 Generally speaking. 00:10:03.300 --> 00:10:07.600 But the truth is there are foolish old people as there are wise young people. 00:10:08.080 --> 00:10:12.720 And that's why I think God gives qualifications and tells people and appoints elders in this way. 00:10:12.720 --> 00:10:19.600 So it's notable, I think, in verse 1 that Peter identifies himself also as a fellow elder, right? 00:10:19.639 --> 00:10:20.700 If you look at verse 1 again. 00:10:21.080 --> 00:10:28.180 A fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed. 00:10:29.680 --> 00:10:32.899 Now this is significant, especially if you think about the history of the church 00:10:32.899 --> 00:10:39.000 and some people who teach that Peter is the first, really, leader of the whole church 00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:43.879 and that there was a succession of apostolic succession where there's one, supposed to be one leader over the whole church. 00:10:44.240 --> 00:10:49.460 Now if that's the case, then Peter certainly doesn't give any clue or hint of that in this passage. 00:10:49.899 --> 00:10:54.379 Rather than emphasizing his superiority or his special place in the household of God, 00:10:54.659 --> 00:10:57.279 he emphasized rather the shared responsibility. 00:10:57.480 --> 00:10:59.559 He says, I'm a fellow elder, right? 00:10:59.980 --> 00:11:05.340 In fact, in the Greek itself, the two nouns, the elder and the witness, are governed by the same article 00:11:05.340 --> 00:11:12.360 and they're joined by a conjunction that really puts the idea of fellow to govern not just the elder but also the witness. 00:11:12.940 --> 00:11:16.980 So he's saying, I'm a fellow elder, I'm a fellow witness along with you, 00:11:17.060 --> 00:11:21.700 and I'm a partaker along with you in the glory that is going to be revealed, right? 00:11:22.060 --> 00:11:24.060 So Peter's highlighting, no, we're in this together. 00:11:24.220 --> 00:11:25.540 I'm an elder with you. 00:11:25.740 --> 00:11:27.040 I'm serving with you. 00:11:27.040 --> 00:11:31.600 I'm a believer along with you and I'm going to partake in the glory that will be revealed when Christ returns. 00:11:31.600 --> 00:11:39.040 So he's not speaking from a place of superior authority, but rather from shared authority, responsibility that they share. 00:11:39.320 --> 00:11:42.220 And that highlights another important aspect of eldership, right? 00:11:42.340 --> 00:11:49.200 And that's that elders, when used in the Bible to refer to the office in the church, it always appears in the plural, right? 00:11:50.019 --> 00:11:51.680 There's always more than one elder. 00:11:51.940 --> 00:11:56.300 And that's for the sake of accountability and mutuality and partnership. 00:11:56.299 --> 00:12:01.539 And that's why in our church as well, we're working hard toward plurality of elders. 00:12:01.859 --> we're working toward that as a church. 00:12:32.060 --> 00:12:39.620 And so in verse 2, Peter tells these elders of the church to shepherd the flock of God that is among you. 00:12:39.660 --> 00:12:40.700 So now that's the second term. 00:12:40.779 --> 00:12:42.940 So the elder refers to mature and wise teaching. 00:12:42.940 --> 00:12:45.460 And secondly, the elders are supposed to shepherd, right? 00:12:45.480 --> 00:12:47.100 They're supposed to be shepherds or pastors. 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:57.120 And shepherding, the idea of pastoring the flock, highlights specifically provision, provident care, and protection, right? 00:12:57.160 --> 00:13:02.340 So you provide for and you probably care for and you protect the sheep, right? 00:13:02.620 --> 00:13:06.480 So to put it another way, the shepherds are supposed to graze the flock. 00:13:06.660 --> 00:13:08.340 They feed the flock with God's word. 00:13:08.760 --> 00:13:12.880 They're supposed to guide the sheep, also guard the sheep from predators, from those who would seek to attack and harm the flock, right? 00:13:22.000 --> 00:13:26.039 And it's not surprising that Peter himself is drawn to this metaphor of a shepherd 00:13:26.039 --> 00:13:31.700 because after he betrayed Christ, after he denied Christ three times at his crucifixion, 00:13:31.700 --> 00:13:36.240 later when Christ rises from the dead and comes to Peter to reinstate him, 00:13:36.680 --> 00:13:38.920 he uses the metaphor of the shepherd. 00:13:39.020 --> 00:13:43.200 He tells him to feed his lambs, tend his sheep, and feed his sheep. 00:13:43.259 --> 00:13:45.700 So I'm sure this was a very poignant metaphor for him. 00:13:46.060 --> 00:13:48.240 So he turns to this metaphor. 00:13:49.500 --> 00:13:53.860 There was a Atlas of the Historical Geography of the Holy Land, 00:14:01.980 --> 00:14:05.480 which is still used to this day in some places as a standard reference book. 00:14:05.879 --> 00:14:10.120 And in it he writes about the shepherd because it's such a prominent image 00:14:10.120 --> 00:14:12.700 throughout the Bible and throughout the history of Palestine and Israel. 00:14:13.020 --> 00:14:13.980 And this is what he says. 00:14:13.980 --> 00:14:19.680 On some high moor, across which at night the hyannis howl, 00:14:20.159 --> 00:14:24.539 when you meet him, sleepless, farsighted, you understand why the shepherd of Judea sprang to the front in his people's history, 00:14:36.360 --> 00:14:40.980 why they gave his name to their king and made him the symbol of providence, 00:14:40.980 --> 00:14:44.600 why Christ took him as a type of self-sacrifice. 00:14:45.259 --> 00:14:47.539 That's what this image of a shepherd conveys. 00:14:47.779 --> 00:14:49.399 The elder, the mature and wise citizen, 00:14:49.500 --> 00:14:51.000 the shepherd provides for, 00:14:51.139 --> 00:14:53.080 privately cares for and protects the sheep 00:14:53.080 --> 00:14:54.840 even at the 00:15:07.820 --> 00:15:10.940 have oversight and responsibility ultimately for the church. 00:15:11.899 --> 00:15:14.639 And Peter gives three specific directions in verses 2 to 3 00:15:14.639 --> 00:15:17.560 about how exactly the elders have to exercise oversight. 00:15:17.720 --> 00:15:18.019 He says, 00:15:18.700 --> 00:15:18.720 first, 00:15:19.240 --> 00:15:20.600 not under compulsion, 00:15:20.899 --> 00:15:23.120 but willingly as God would have you. 00:15:24.399 --> 00:15:25.399 See, the elders are, 00:15:26.220 --> 00:15:29.700 the reason why they might sometimes be served under compulsion 00:15:29.700 --> 00:15:32.200 is because they're not volunteers necessarily. 00:15:32.580 --> 00:15:34.379 They're called and they're appointed, right? 00:15:34.659 --> 00:15:36.000 So not the grain, 00:16:42.779 --> 00:16:45.240 and the laborer deserves his wages, right? 00:16:45.399 --> 00:16:48.219 So already there's practice of compensating the elders 00:16:48.219 --> 00:16:51.899 through the money the people gave and pulled in together. 00:16:52.559 --> 00:16:53.399 And consequently, 00:16:54.039 --> 00:16:56.779 there were some people who abused that privilege, right? 00:16:56.819 --> 00:16:58.299 Some elders who abused that privilege 00:16:58.299 --> 00:17:00.699 used the gospel for shameful gain, right? 00:17:01.139 --> 00:17:04.419 And that's why in chapter 2, verse 3 of his second epistle, 00:17:04.599 --> 00:17:07.519 Peter, he warns about those who in their greed 00:17:07.519 --> 00:17:10.019 exploit you with false words, right? 00:17:10.440 --> 00:17:12.200 Paul also warns of people who, 00:17:12.359 --> 00:17:13.480 in 1 Timothy 6, 00:17:13.720 --> 00:17:16.980 those who imagine that godliness is a means of gain, right? 00:17:17.599 --> 00:17:20.159 And then he stipulates in the qualifications for elders 00:17:20.159 --> 00:17:22.319 that an elder must not be a lover of money. 00:17:22.319 --> 00:17:24.139 And this might,
