in Corinth, sent to the church in Rome, which was a mixed congregation of Jewish and Gentile Christians. 00:00:26.179 --> 00:00:40.619 And there was a bit of tension between these two groups and Jewish believers treasured their rituals, their Jewish rituals, and incorporated parts of that into their newfound faith. 00:00:41.100 --> 00:00:45.019 The Gentile Christians were questioning, well, why is this necessary? 00:00:45.719 --> 00:00:52.679 And so we come across this in this recurring theme in a lot of the New Testament churches. 00:00:52.679 --> 00:00:57.960 Paul in his letter starts with what you might say is bad news. 00:00:58.719 --> 00:01:11.780 Every one of us has sinned, he says, and whether we're Jew or Gentile, whether we're religious or not, whether we're respectable or not, we all fall short of God's glory. 00:01:11.920 --> 00:01:14.060 And that, says Paul, is a problem. 00:01:14.900 --> 00:01:17.960 But then comes wonderful good news. 00:01:17.959 --> 00:01:24.839 We're not made right with God by trying harder or by being better. 00:01:25.739 --> 00:01:32.199 We're justified by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. 00:01:33.539 --> 00:01:37.739 And then Paul moves beyond forgiveness and onto transformation. 00:01:37.739 --> 00:01:49.519 And the Holy Spirit, he says, transforms us, changes us from the inside out, enabling us to live lives that honour God.
