even years afterwards 00:28:57.460 --> 00:28:58.460 Maybe it's a meeting you've had 00:28:59.460 --> 00:29:00.460 Some point in the past 00:29:00.460 --> 00:29:01.460 Maybe you can even look back 00:29:01.460 --> 00:29:03.460 In your more recent experience 00:29:03.460 --> 00:29:04.460 Maybe even this last week 00:29:05.460 --> 00:29:07.460 You've met someone out and about 00:29:07.460 --> 00:29:09.460 Or maybe someone's popped in to visit 00:29:10.460 --> 00:29:12.460 And you've had a conversation with them 00:29:12.460 --> 00:29:15.460 And you've come away from it thinking 00:29:16.460 --> 00:29:17.460 That did me good 00:29:18.460 --> 00:29:21.460 That was a good experience for me 00:29:21.460 --> 00:29:24.460 Because there are times in the hustle and bustle of life 00:29:24.460 --> 00:29:27.460 When just a wee conversation with someone 00:29:27.460 --> 00:29:31.460 And especially a conversation from a believer 00:29:31.460 --> 00:29:32.460 A Christian 00:29:33.460 --> 00:29:34.460 Who has a word 00:29:34.460 --> 00:29:36.460 Just to refresh our souls 00:29:36.460 --> 00:29:39.460 Just makes us ever so thankful 00:29:39.460 --> 00:29:41.460 For all that the Lord has done 00:29:42.460 --> 00:29:44.460 Have you ever had an experience though 00:29:44.460 --> 00:29:46.460 Like this woman of Samaria has 00:29:47.460 --> 00:29:49.460 In this passage that we've read together 00:29:50.460 --> 00:29:51.460 Perhaps you have 00:29:52.460 --> 00:29:53.460 Perhaps you know what it is 00:29:54.460 --> 00:29:55.460 To have met with the one 00:29:56.460 --> 00:29:57.460 Who is able to give you waters 00:29:58.460 --> 00:30:00.460 From a well that will never run dry 00:30:01.460 --> 00:30:03.460 To satisfy a thirst that you've had for a long time 00:30:04.460 --> 00:30:06.460 And to know that you will thirst no more 00:30:07.460 --> 00:30:09.460 Because you are believing and trusting in him 00:30:09.460 --> 00:30:13.460 Or perhaps you haven't had this meeting yet 00:30:14.460 --> 00:30:16.460 Perhaps you are longing for this meeting 00:30:16.460 --> 00:30:18.460 To encounter with this one 00:30:19.460 --> 00:30:21.460 Who is able to satisfy your thirst 00:30:22.460 --> 00:30:25.460 Perhaps you are looking in life to find something 00:30:26.460 --> 00:30:28.460 That will just give you that satisfaction 00:30:28.460 --> 00:30:29.460 That joy 00:30:29.460 --> 00:30:31.460 And yet all the time you are just feeling tired 00:30:31.460 --> 00:30:33.460 And jaded with it all 00:30:34.460 --> 00:30:36.460 While our text this evening 00:30:37.460 --> 00:30:38.460 Reading this evening shows us 00:30:39.460 --> 00:30:41.460 This woman of Samaria 00:30:42.460 --> 00:30:43.460 Whose life is very much 00:30:44.460 --> 00:30:46.460 In that category of being just tired 00:30:46.460 --> 00:30:47.460 And jaded 00:30:48.460 --> 00:30:49.460 And weary 00:30:49.460 --> 00:30:50.460 A life that has perhaps been going 00:30:50.460 --> 00:30:52.460 Round and round in circles 00:30:53.460 --> 00:30:54.460 For a very long time 00:30:55.460 --> 00:30:57.460 And she's just worn out 00:30:58.460 --> 00:30:59.460 By it all 00:31:00.460 --> 00:31:01.460 And she's tried 00:31:01.460 --> 00:31:03.460 Drinking from every well that there is around her 00:31:04.460 --> 00:31:05.460 And every place she's gone 00:31:06.460 --> 00:31:07.460 Every time she's come away 00:31:08.460 --> 00:31:10.460 Feeling even more thirsty than she was 00:31:10.460 --> 00:31:11.460 When she first came 00:31:12.460 --> 00:31:14.460 But then something happened 00:31:14.460 --> 00:31:15.460 A meeting happened 00:31:15.460 --> 00:31:16.460 A meeting happened 00:31:17.460 --> 00:31:20.460 That completely changed her life 00:31:21.460 --> 00:31:24.460 The Lord Jesus came to her town 00:31:25.460 --> 00:31:27.460 And outside that town 00:31:28.460 --> 00:31:29.460 In the middle of the day 00:31:30.460 --> 00:31:31.460 In the heat of the day 00:31:32.460 --> 00:31:33.460 In the weariness of life 00:31:34.460 --> 00:31:36.460 She finds one who is able 00:31:37.460 --> 00:31:40.460 And who does indeed transform her life 00:31:40.460 --> 00:31:42.460 He opens her eyes 00:31:43.460 --> 00:31:44.460 To see what she needs 00:31:45.460 --> 00:31:46.460 And not just that 00:31:47.460 --> 00:31:48.460 He opens her eyes to see 00:31:49.460 --> 00:31:50.460 Where that need can be found 00:31:51.460 --> 00:31:52.460 And this woman 00:31:53.460 --> 00:31:54.460 Who was tired and weary 00:31:55.460 --> 00:31:56.460 Coming to the well 00:31:57.460 --> 00:31:58.460 Returns to her town 00:31:59.460 --> 00:32:00.460 To a people that perhaps 00:32:01.460 --> 00:32:02.460 Had shunned her and turned away from her 00:32:03.460 --> 00:32:05.460 As we'll see as we go through this passage 00:32:06.460 --> 00:32:07.460 They turn to hear 00:32:08.460 --> 00:32:09.460 What she has to say 00:32:09.460 --> 00:32:10.460 And in listening to her 00:32:10.460 --> 00:32:12.460 They begin to realise 00:32:12.460 --> 00:32:14.460 That something as incredible 00:32:14.460 --> 00:32:15.460 Has happened in her life 00:32:16.460 --> 00:32:17.460 That she has met with someone 00:32:18.460 --> 00:32:19.460 Who has made all the difference 00:32:20.460 --> 00:32:22.460 And as she says to them 00:32:23.460 --> 00:32:24.460 Could this be the Christ 00:32:25.460 --> 00:32:26.460 The Messiah 00:32:27.460 --> 00:32:28.460 The promised one 00:32:29.460 --> 00:32:31.460 Well, Jesus we see here 00:32:32.460 --> 00:32:33.460 Takes this jaded 00:32:34.460 --> 00:32:35.460 This hardened woman 00:32:36.460 --> 00:32:38.460 And he leads her to a place of trust 00:32:39.460 --> 00:32:40.460 And a place to 00:32:40.460 --> 00:32:43.460 Coming to quench her thirst 00:32:43.460 --> 00:32:44.460 And drink 00:32:45.460 --> 00:32:46.460 From the living water 00:32:47.460 --> 00:32:49.460 Of the well of faith 00:32:50.460 --> 00:32:52.460 And the well of salvation 00:32:53.460 --> 00:32:54.460 And she realises 00:32:55.460 --> 00:32:56.460 There is much more in this well 00:32:57.460 --> 00:33:00.460 Than just the water that quenches her natural thirst 00:33:01.460 --> 00:33:03.460 Here her very soul 00:33:04.460 --> 00:33:05.460 Her very being 00:33:05.460 --> 00:33:06.460 The very thirst in life 00:33:06.460 --> 00:33:07.460 Is quenched 00:33:08.460 --> 00:33:09.460 And satisfied 00:33:10.460 --> 00:33:11.460 And these 00:33:12.460 --> 00:33:13.460 This meeting, these verses 00:33:13.460 --> 00:33:14.460 They remind us 00:33:14.460 --> 00:33:15.460 Of two things 00:33:16.460 --> 00:33:17.460 First of all 00:33:17.460 --> 00:33:18.460 They remind us that 00:33:18.460 --> 00:33:19.460 If you are saved 00:33:20.460 --> 00:33:22.460 If you have encountered with this Jesus 00:33:22.460 --> 00:33:23.460 Who offers you living water 00:33:24.460 --> 00:33:26.460 We are reminded how good 00:33:27.460 --> 00:33:28.460 He has been 00:33:28.460 --> 00:33:29.460 How gracious 00:33:29.460 --> 00:33:30.460 He has been to us 00:33:30.460 --> 00:33:31.460 In redeeming our soul 00:33:32.460 --> 00:33:34.460 What He has done for us 00:33:34.460 --> 00:33:35.460 Goes beyond 00:33:36.460 --> 00:33:37.460 Any way we can give thanks to Him 00:33:38.460 --> 00:33:39.460 And yet we come 00:33:40.460 --> 00:33:41.460 Praising His name 00:33:42.460 --> 00:33:43.460 Thankful 00:33:44.460 --> 00:33:45.460 That He is the one 00:33:45.460 --> 00:33:46.460 Who continues to refresh our soul 00:33:47.460 --> 00:33:49.460 And to refresh us through His words 00:33:50.460 --> 00:33:53.460 That even as we feel weary and jaded in this world 00:33:53.460 --> 00:33:55.460 Through all that is going on around us 00:33:56.460 --> 00:33:58.460 As we come to the living water of His word 00:33:59.460 --> 00:34:01.460 We find ourselves refreshed 00:34:02.460 --> 00:34:03.460 And encouraged 00:34:04.460 --> 00:34:06.460 But it also reminds us too 00:34:07.460 --> 00:34:09.460 Secondly, if you are lost 00:34:10.460 --> 00:34:12.460 If you are like this woman was 00:34:13.460 --> 00:34:14.460 As she made her way to the well 00:34:15.460 --> 00:34:16.460 Just jaded and weary 00:34:17.460 --> 00:34:20.460 Trying to find a way to find joy and happiness 00:34:20.460 --> 00:34:22.460 And hope in this world 00:34:23.460 --> 00:34:25.460 It reminds us that the answer is found 00:34:26.460 --> 00:34:28.460 Not in the wells of this world 00:34:28.460 --> 00:34:30.460 And the things that this world will say 00:34:30.460 --> 00:34:48.460 To find with Him 00:34:48.460 --> 00:34:49.460 Through His word 00:34:49.460 --> 00:34:50.460 Through His word 00:34:50.460 --> 00:34:51.460 The Spirit 00:34:52.460 --> 00:34:53.460 Convicting us and convincing us 00:34:54.460 --> 00:34:55.460 And giving us that hope 00:34:56.460 --> 00:34:57.460 That hope of eternal life 00:34:58.460 --> 00:34:59.460 Through Him 00:35:00.460 --> 00:35:01.460 I want us to see 00:35:02.460 --> 00:35:04.460 Three things as we look at this passage 00:35:05.460 --> 00:35:06.460 Three things of the ones 00:35:07.460 --> 00:35:09.460 Who we see in this passage 00:35:10.460 --> 00:35:11.460 And the first thing we are going to look at is 00:35:12.460 --> 00:35:13.460 The woman in the sense of 00:35:14.460 --> 00:35:16.460 The lonely woman 00:35:16.460 --> 00:35:19.460 We read here that 00:35:20.460 --> 00:35:21.460 Jesus had left Judea 00:35:22.460 --> 00:35:23.460 At the beginning of the chapter 00:35:24.460 --> 00:35:25.460 To go to Galilee 00:35:26.460 --> 00:35:27.460 And that journey 00:35:28.460 --> 00:35:29.460 Took Him through Samaria 00:35:30.460 --> 00:35:32.460 And on this journey 00:35:33.460 --> 00:35:34.460 He enters into a region 00:35:35.460 --> 00:35:36.460 That the Jews would be very hesitant 00:35:37.460 --> 00:35:38.460 Of going into normally 00:35:39.460 --> 00:35:40.460 Normally the Jews would avoid 00:35:41.460 --> 00:35:42.460 Going through Samaria 00:35:42.460 --> 00:35:43.460 We read here 00:35:43.460 --> 00:35:44.460 That the Jews 00:35:44.460 --> 00:35:45.460 And the Samaritans 00:35:45.460 --> 00:35:46.460 They didn't get on 00:35:47.460 --> 00:35:48.460 They didn't see eye to eye 00:35:48.460 --> 00:35:49.460 In fact there was a real 00:35:50.460 --> 00:35:51.460 Hatred and a real bitterness 00:35:51.460 --> 00:35:52.460 Between them 00:35:53.460 --> 00:35:54.460 But on this journey 00:35:54.460 --> 00:35:55.460 He and his disciples 00:35:55.460 --> 00:35:57.460 Making their way through Samaria 00:35:57.460 --> 00:35:58.460 They stop in this town 00:35:59.460 --> 00:36:00.460 Called Sychar 00:36:01.460 --> 00:36:02.460 A small town 00:36:03.460 --> 00:36:04.460 And here they stop for a time 00:36:05.460 --> 00:36:08.460 It tells us there in verse 4 00:36:08.460 --> 00:36:10.460 That he had to pass through Samaria 00:36:10.460 --> 00:36:11.460 And he came to the town 00:36:11.460 --> 00:36:12.460 Of Samaria called Sychar 00:36:13.460 --> 00:36:14.460 Near the field that 00:36:14.460 --> 00:36:15.460 Jacob had given to his son 00:36:16.460 --> 00:36:17.460 Joseph 00:36:17.460 --> 00:36:18.460 And Jacob's well was there 00:36:19.460 --> 00:36:20.460 So Jesus 00:36:20.460 --> 00:36:21.460 Weed as he was from his journey 00:36:22.460 --> 00:36:23.460 Was sitting beside the well 00:36:24.460 --> 00:36:25.460 And it was about 00:36:26.460 --> 00:36:27.460 The sixth hour 00:36:28.460 --> 00:36:29.460 His disciples 00:36:29.460 --> 00:36:30.460 Had gone ahead of him 00:36:30.460 --> 00:36:31.460 Into the town 00:36:31.460 --> 00:36:32.460 To get some food for them 00:36:32.460 --> 00:36:33.460 To share together 00:36:34.460 --> 00:36:35.460 And it was while 00:36:35.460 --> 00:36:36.460 Jesus was left alone 00:36:36.460 --> 00:36:37.460 At this well 00:36:38.460 --> 00:36:39.460 That this amazing encounter 00:36:40.460 --> 00:36:41.460 Happens 00:36:41.460 --> 00:36:42.460 Where this woman 00:36:42.460 --> 00:36:43.460 Of Samaria 00:36:43.460 --> 00:36:44.460 Comes along 00:36:45.460 --> 00:36:46.460 Just by chance 00:36:47.460 --> 00:36:48.460 She happens to come along 00:36:48.460 --> 00:36:49.460 When Jesus is sitting there 00:36:50.460 --> 00:36:51.460 That's the way many people 00:36:52.460 --> 00:36:53.460 Would look at it 00:36:53.460 --> 00:36:54.460 Isn't it? 00:36:54.460 --> 00:36:55.460 Just this chance encounter 00:36:56.460 --> 00:36:57.460 Perhaps you've had some 00:36:58.460 --> 00:36:59.460 Chance encounters 00:36:59.460 --> 00:37:00.460 As you see it in your own eyes 00:37:00.460 --> 00:37:02.460 When maybe you meet with someone 00:37:02.460 --> 00:37:03.460 Who has a word to give you 00:37:03.460 --> 00:37:06.460 But they're not chance encounters 00:37:07.460 --> 00:37:08.460 They're appointments 00:37:09.460 --> 00:37:10.460 From God himself 00:37:11.460 --> 00:37:13.460 They are there in God's providence 00:37:14.460 --> 00:37:16.460 And here we see in God's providence 00:37:17.460 --> 00:37:18.460 Jesus meets with this woman 00:37:19.460 --> 00:37:20.460 Of Samaria 00:37:21.460 --> 00:37:22.460 And I've called her 00:37:23.460 --> 00:37:24.460 The lonely woman 00:37:24.460 --> 00:37:25.460 First of all 00:37:25.460 --> 00:37:26.460 Because that's what you see of her 00:37:27.460 --> 00:37:28.460 At the start of this 00:37:29.460 --> 00:37:30.460 This encounter 00:37:30.460 --> 00:37:32.460 She's a lonely woman 00:37:32.460 --> 00:37:33.460 In the sense of 00:37:33.460 --> 00:37:34.460 The kind of life 00:37:34.460 --> 00:37:35.460 That she is now living 00:37:36.460 --> 00:37:37.460 And there are little things 00:37:38.460 --> 00:37:39.460 That give us a hint 00:37:39.460 --> 00:37:40.460 To that in this passage 00:37:41.460 --> 00:37:43.460 The information we are told about 00:37:43.460 --> 00:37:44.460 Or would indicate this 00:37:45.460 --> 00:37:46.460 To us 00:37:46.460 --> 00:37:47.460 First of all 00:37:47.460 --> 00:37:48.460 You see there 00:37:48.460 --> 00:37:49.460 When Jesus was sitting at the well 00:37:49.460 --> 00:37:50.460 What time was it? 00:37:51.460 --> 00:37:52.460 It says at the end of verse 6 00:37:52.460 --> 00:37:54.460 It was about the sixth hour 00:37:55.460 --> 00:37:56.460 That's midday 00:37:56.460 --> 00:37:57.460 That's middle of the day 00:37:57.460 --> 00:37:58.460 In the middle of the day 00:37:58.460 --> 00:37:59.460 Noon 00:37:59.460 --> 00:38:00.460 And here he is 00:38:00.460 --> 00:38:01.460 Out at the well 00:38:01.460 --> 00:38:02.460 At midday 00:38:02.460 --> 00:38:03.460 And this woman 00:38:04.460 --> 00:38:05.460 Comes to the well 00:38:06.460 --> 00:38:07.460 And this is unusual 00:38:08.460 --> 00:38:09.460 Because normally 00:38:10.460 --> 00:38:11.460 In those days 00:38:11.460 --> 00:38:12.460 The woman would come out 00:38:12.460 --> 00:38:13.460 To the well 00:38:13.460 --> 00:38:14.460 Either early in the morning 00:38:15.460 --> 00:38:16.460 Or late into the evening 00:38:17.460 --> 00:38:18.460 In the cool of the day 00:38:19.460 --> 00:38:20.460 Not in the middle of the day 00:38:20.460 --> 00:38:21.460 When the scorching sun 00:38:22.460 --> 00:38:23.460 Is beating down on them 00:38:23.460 --> 00:38:24.460 And they have to carry 00:38:24.460 --> 00:38:25.460 These heavy water jars 00:38:25.460 --> 00:38:27.460 They wouldn't make the journey then 00:38:28.460 --> 00:38:29.460 Because it would just 00:38:29.460 --> 00:38:30.460 Tire them out 00:38:30.460 --> 00:38:31.460 And burn them out 00:38:31.460 --> 00:38:32.460 Even quicker 00:38:33.460 --> 00:38:34.460 So a work that was 00:38:34.460 --> 00:38:35.460 Already difficult enough 00:38:35.460 --> 00:38:36.460 Would be even more difficult 00:38:37.460 --> 00:38:38.460 Here coming 00:38:38.460 --> 00:38:40.460 At the sixth hour 00:38:42.460 --> 00:38:43.460 And the other thing you notice 00:38:43.460 --> 00:38:44.460 About when she came is 00:38:45.460 --> 00:38:46.460 She was by herself 00:38:47.460 --> 00:38:49.460 There was nobody else 00:38:50.460 --> 00:38:51.460 With her 00:38:51.460 --> 00:38:52.460 And again 00:38:52.460 --> 00:38:53.460 This is a telling insight 00:38:53.460 --> 00:38:54.460 Into her life 00:38:54.460 --> 00:38:55.460 Because normally 00:38:55.460 --> 00:38:56.460 They would come 00:38:56.460 --> 00:38:57.460 As a crowd 00:38:57.460 --> 00:38:59.460 They would come together 00:39:00.460 --> 00:39:01.460 To do this work 00:39:01.460 --> 00:39:02.460 So they would be speaking 00:39:02.460 --> 00:39:03.460 With one another 00:39:03.460 --> 00:39:04.460 Talking with one another 00:39:04.460 --> 00:39:05.460 Helping one another 00:39:05.460 --> 00:39:06.460 If the need arose 00:39:07.460 --> 00:39:08.460 So this woman 00:39:09.460 --> 00:39:11.460 Was different to the others 00:39:12.460 --> 00:39:13.460 In the middle of the day 00:39:14.460 --> 00:39:15.460 And by herself 00:39:16.460 --> 00:39:17.460 This was unusual 00:39:18.460 --> 00:39:19.460 And it's telling 00:39:20.460 --> 00:39:22.460 It's telling that she was doing this 00:39:22.460 --> 00:39:23.460 And then it goes on 00:39:23.460 --> 00:39:24.460 To explain perhaps 00:39:24.460 --> 00:39:25.460 The reason why 00:39:25.460 --> 00:39:26.460 It was 00:39:27.460 --> 00:39:28.460 That she was alone 00:39:28.460 --> 00:39:29.460 And coming in the middle 00:39:29.460 --> 00:39:30.460 Of the day 00:39:31.460 --> 00:39:32.460 She had a lifestyle 00:39:33.460 --> 00:39:34.460 That would seem to indicate 00:39:35.460 --> 00:39:36.460 That grief and sorrow 00:39:36.460 --> 00:39:37.460 Was never far from her 00:39:38.460 --> 00:39:39.460 She had had five husbands 00:39:40.460 --> 00:39:41.460 We are told 00:39:41.460 --> 00:39:42.460 And now she's with a man 00:39:43.460 --> 00:39:44.460 Who's not her husband 00:39:45.460 --> 00:39:46.460 And again 00:39:46.460 --> 00:39:48.460 This insight just shows us 00:39:48.460 --> 00:39:49.460 The kind of life 00:39:49.460 --> 00:39:50.460 That she had 00:39:50.460 --> 00:39:51.460 It was one 00:39:51.460 --> 00:39:52.460 That was lonely 00:39:53.460 --> 00:39:54.460 Weerisome 00:39:55.460 --> 00:39:56.460 No friends 00:39:57.460 --> 00:39:58.460 Around her 00:39:58.460 --> 00:39:59.460 Perhaps being shunned 00:39:59.460 --> 00:40:00.460 By many who had once 00:40:00.460 --> 00:40:01.460 Been her friends 00:40:02.460 --> 00:40:04.460 There seems to be little 00:40:04.460 --> 00:40:05.460 In her life 00:40:06.460 --> 00:40:07.460 To fill her with joy 00:40:07.460 --> 00:40:08.460 And happiness 00:40:09.460 --> 00:40:10.460 What we are seeing instead 00:40:11.460 --> 00:40:12.460 Is a lonely woman 00:40:12.460 --> 00:40:13.460 And yet 00:40:15.460 --> 00:40:16.460 It is a woman 00:40:16.460 --> 00:40:17.460 That Jesus 00:40:18.460 --> 00:40:19.460 Meets with 00:40:20.460 --> 00:40:21.460 A woman that comes 00:40:21.460 --> 00:40:22.460 In the middle of the day 00:40:22.460 --> 00:40:23.460 And finds herself 00:40:24.460 --> 00:40:25.460 Talking to one 00:40:26.460 --> 00:40:27.460 Who is the Christ 00:40:28.460 --> 00:40:29.460 And it's a great reminder 00:40:30.460 --> 00:40:31.460 To us all 00:40:32.460 --> 00:40:33.460 That Christ is there 00:40:33.460 --> 00:40:34.460 For anyone 00:40:35.460 --> 00:40:36.460 That Christ is there 00:40:37.460 --> 00:40:38.460 For everyone 00:40:39.460 --> 00:40:40.460 But it's a reminder too 00:40:40.460 --> 00:40:41.460 Of what loneliness 00:40:41.460 --> 00:40:42.460 And isolation 00:40:43.460 --> 00:40:44.460 Can do to us 00:40:45.460 --> 00:40:46.460 It can often leave us 00:40:46.460 --> 00:40:48.460 Feeling a sense of hopelessness 00:40:49.460 --> 00:40:50.460 But it also leaves us 00:40:50.460 --> 00:40:52.460 In a very dangerous situation 00:40:52.460 --> 00:40:53.460 As well 00:40:54.460 --> 00:40:55.460 When we're lonely 00:40:56.460 --> 00:40:57.460 When we're isolated 00:40:57.460 --> 00:40:58.460 When we're feeling weary 00:40:58.460 --> 00:40:59.460 In this world 00:41:00.460 --> 00:41:01.460 It can often lead us 00:41:01.460 --> 00:41:02.460 To turning to look for happiness 00:41:03.460 --> 00:41:04.460 Anywhere and everywhere 00:41:05.460 --> 00:41:07.460 We will try and find something 00:41:08.460 --> 00:41:09.460 That will give us joy 00:41:09.460 --> 00:41:10.460 But we're often looking 00:41:10.460 --> 00:41:12.460 In the wrong place 00:41:13.460 --> 00:41:14.460 And it would seem 00:41:14.460 --> 00:41:15.460 That this woman 00:41:15.460 --> 00:41:16.460 Had craved 00:41:16.460 --> 00:41:17.460 The company of men 00:41:18.460 --> 00:41:19.460 It would seem 00:41:19.460 --> 00:41:20.460 That her whole lifestyle 00:41:20.460 --> 00:41:21.460 Had just left her 00:41:21.460 --> 00:41:22.460 Ended up 00:41:22.460 --> 00:41:23.460 Seeking what would normally be 00:41:24.460 --> 00:41:26.460 A happy and a healthy way of life 00:41:27.460 --> 00:41:28.460 But to her 00:41:28.460 --> 00:41:29.460 It had just led to disappointment 00:41:30.460 --> 00:41:31.460 After disappointment 00:41:32.460 --> 00:41:34.460 And for ourselves 00:41:35.460 --> 00:41:36.460 It may not be 00:41:36.460 --> 00:41:37.460 That's the way we try 00:41:37.460 --> 00:41:38.460 And find our happiness 00:41:38.460 --> 00:41:39.460 But there are other things 00:41:39.460 --> 00:41:40.460 Where we try and find 00:41:40.460 --> 00:41:42.460 Our happiness today 00:41:42.460 --> 00:41:44.460 So where do you look for joy? 00:41:44.460 --> 00:41:47.460 Where do you look to have your thirst quenched today? 00:41:48.460 --> 00:41:49.460 In loneliness 00:41:50.460 --> 00:41:51.460 In isolation 00:41:52.460 --> 00:41:53.460 In our own weariness of life 00:41:53.460 --> 00:41:55.460 We can turn to the wrong place 00:41:56.460 --> 00:41:58.460 Perhaps it leads us 00:41:59.460 --> 00:42:00.460 To turning to drink 00:42:01.460 --> 00:42:03.460 Perhaps it leads us to thinking 00:42:03.460 --> 00:42:04.460 Oh, I'll do the lottery 00:42:04.460 --> 00:42:05.460 Or I'll place a bet 00:42:06.460 --> 00:42:07.460 Or I'll place a bet 00:42:08.460 --> 00:42:09.460 And all of a sudden 00:42:09.460 --> 00:42:10.460 We find ourselves 00:42:10.460 --> 00:42:11.460 Just getting sucked into 00:42:11.460 --> 00:42:12.460 A way of life 00:42:13.460 --> 00:42:14.460 That is wrong 00:42:15.460 --> 00:42:16.460 We try and find and think 00:42:16.460 --> 00:42:17.460 That joy and happiness 00:42:18.460 --> 00:42:20.460 Will be found in all the wrong places 00:42:21.460 --> 00:42:22.460 People so often 00:42:23.460 --> 00:42:24.460 Turn to things like a horoscope 00:42:25.460 --> 00:42:26.460 And they think to themselves 00:42:27.460 --> 00:42:28.460 Well this might have something good 00:42:28.460 --> 00:42:29.460 To say to me 00:42:29.460 --> 00:42:30.460 It'll give me something 00:42:30.460 --> 00:42:31.460 To encourage me 00:42:31.460 --> 00:42:32.460 It'll give me something 00:42:32.460 --> 00:42:33.460 To encourage me 00:42:33.460 --> 00:42:35.460 We're turning to all the wrong places 00:42:36.460 --> 00:42:38.460 We all have a great need 00:42:39.460 --> 00:42:41.460 And a hunger for joy in life 00:42:42.460 --> 00:42:45.460 But so often we miss the mark 00:42:46.460 --> 00:42:48.460 We look in the wrong place 00:42:48.460 --> 00:42:51.460 And now the amazing thing 00:42:51.460 --> 00:42:53.460 We see in this woman's situation 00:42:54.460 --> 00:42:56.460 Is the one who comes to her 00:42:57.460 --> 00:43:00.460 Is the one who can meet her every need 00:43:02.460 --> 00:43:03.460 And that's the great news 00:43:04.460 --> 00:43:06.460 Of the gospel for ourselves today 00:43:07.460 --> 00:43:09.460 We have tried maybe 00:43:10.460 --> 00:43:11.460 Drinking and filling her 00:43:12.460 --> 00:43:13.460 Trying to quench her thirst 00:43:13.460 --> 00:43:14.460 In all kinds of different ways 00:43:14.460 --> 00:43:16.460 And there's no satisfaction 00:43:17.460 --> 00:43:20.460 There's no quenching of that thirst 00:43:21.460 --> 00:43:22.460 We're still feeling 00:43:23.460 --> 00:43:24.460 That emptiness inside us 00:43:25.460 --> 00:43:27.460 It is Pascal who once said 00:43:28.460 --> 00:43:29.460 There's a great God-shaped void 00:43:30.460 --> 00:43:31.460 In the heart of every man 00:43:32.460 --> 00:43:33.460 Which cannot be satisfied 00:43:34.460 --> 00:43:35.460 By any created thing 00:43:36.460 --> 00:43:37.460 But only by God 00:43:38.460 --> 00:43:39.460 The creator made known 00:43:40.460 --> 00:43:41.460 Through Jesus Christ 00:43:41.460 --> 00:43:43.460 You have that void 00:43:44.460 --> 00:43:46.460 And you're trying to fill it 00:43:47.460 --> 00:43:48.460 It's like the child 00:43:49.460 --> 00:43:51.460 That's trying to put the blocks 00:43:52.460 --> 00:43:53.460 Into the bucket 00:43:54.460 --> 00:43:55.460 Where you're trying to put the circle 00:43:55.460 --> 00:43:56.460 Through the square 00:43:57.460 --> 00:43:58.460 It's just not going to go 00:43:58.460 --> 00:43:59.460 You're trying to hammer it in 00:43:59.460 --> 00:44:00.460 But it's just not going to happen 00:44:01.460 --> 00:44:02.460 You have to put it into the right shape 00:44:03.460 --> 00:44:04.460 And for ourselves 00:44:05.460 --> 00:44:07.460 We're constantly just trying to put 00:44:07.460 --> 00:44:09.460 The wrong shape into our life 00:44:09.460 --> 00:44:10.460 It just will not fit 00:44:10.460 --> 00:44:12.460 Because the only thing 00:44:13.460 --> 00:44:14.460 That's going to fit 00:44:15.460 --> 00:44:16.460 The only thing that's going to change 00:44:16.460 --> 00:44:17.460 And fill that void 00:44:17.460 --> 00:44:18.460 Is Christ 00:44:20.460 --> 00:44:21.460 So here 00:44:21.460 --> 00:44:22.460 This lonely woman 00:44:23.460 --> 00:44:24.460 She meets with this Christ 00:44:26.460 --> 00:44:27.460 That's what was missing 00:44:28.460 --> 00:44:29.460 In this woman's life 00:44:30.460 --> 00:44:32.460 Is it missing in yours? 00:44:33.460 --> 00:44:37.460 Is that void in your heart tonight? 00:44:37.460 --> 00:44:40.460 If you want to find answers 00:44:41.460 --> 00:44:42.460 We're not to turn to the wisdom 00:44:43.460 --> 00:44:44.460 Of this world 00:44:45.460 --> 00:44:46.460 And the false temptations 00:44:47.460 --> 00:44:49.460 The false longings of this world 00:44:50.460 --> 00:44:51.460 That will say to us 00:44:52.460 --> 00:44:54.460 This will satisfy you when it won't 00:44:55.460 --> 00:44:58.460 And our only way to find satisfaction 00:44:59.460 --> 00:45:00.460 Is in Christ 00:45:00.460 --> 00:45:05.460 And this is a day that would change this woman's life forever 00:45:06.460 --> 00:45:10.460 And as a Christian tonight 00:45:11.460 --> 00:45:14.460 There's a great reminder to you if you're a Christian here 00:45:15.460 --> 00:45:17.460 Of the importance of making time for people 00:45:18.460 --> 00:45:23.460 The importance of being there when people perhaps have their questions to ask 00:45:23.460 --> 00:45:28.460 The importance of getting alongside those who maybe in your eyes 00:45:29.460 --> 00:45:31.460 Seem so far away from God that there's no hope 00:45:32.460 --> 00:45:34.460 This is a reminder to us 00:45:35.460 --> 00:45:37.460 That there's a void in every heart 00:45:38.460 --> 00:45:40.460 And no matter how far away someone seems 00:45:41.460 --> 00:45:42.460 We are to always have time 00:45:43.460 --> 00:45:47.460 To always have time to come along and to answer 00:45:47.460 --> 00:45:50.460 There's a man called Charles Adam 00:45:51.460 --> 00:45:53.460 An American in the 19th century 00:45:54.460 --> 00:45:56.460 He was a very important political figure 00:45:57.460 --> 00:45:59.460 And he had a busy life 00:46:00.460 --> 00:46:02.460 And again he didn't like things to interrupt his life 00:46:03.460 --> 00:46:06.460 And he saw many things that were a waste of time 00:46:07.460 --> 00:46:08.460 And he kept a diary 00:46:08.460 --> 00:46:13.460 And one day he entered this into his diary 00:46:14.460 --> 00:46:16.460 Went fishing with my son today 00:46:17.460 --> 00:46:19.460 A day wasted 00:46:20.460 --> 00:46:24.460 That was an assessment of that time spent with his son that day 00:46:25.460 --> 00:46:28.460 What was interesting was his son kept a diary 00:46:29.460 --> 00:46:31.460 He was called Brook Adams 00:46:32.460 --> 00:46:34.460 And he 00:46:43.460 --> 00:46:46.460 And you see when you look at the experiences 00:46:47.460 --> 00:46:48.460 That when the encounters we have in life 00:46:49.460 --> 00:46:53.460 Sometimes we feel that was just a waste of time 00:46:54.460 --> 00:46:56.460 But you never know what's going on in someone's heart 00:46:57.460 --> 00:46:58.460 In that person's heart 00:46:59.460 --> 00:47:02.460 It might be the most wonderful experience in their life 00:47:02.460 --> 00:47:05.460 If the disciples as you see them coming back 00:47:06.460 --> 00:47:07.460 They looked on this woman 00:47:08.460 --> 00:47:09.460 Speaking with Jesus 00:47:09.460 --> 00:47:11.460 And they wondered why on earth is he spending time with her 00:47:12.460 --> 00:47:13.460 Why is he wasting his time? 00:47:14.460 --> 00:47:15.460 That's the way we would have seen it 00:47:16.460 --> 00:47:17.460 But not Jesus 00:47:18.460 --> 00:47:20.460 He had time for her 00:47:21.460 --> 00:47:22.460 And she 00:47:23.460 --> 00:47:25.460 Her life was totally transformed 00:47:26.460 --> 00:47:27.460 By this encounter 00:47:27.460 --> 00:47:30.460 Because who did she meet with? 00:47:30.460 --> 00:47:32.460 Well we see 00:47:33.460 --> 00:47:34.460 This lonely 00:47:35.460 --> 00:47:36.460 This lonely woman met with a loving saviour 00:47:37.460 --> 00:47:42.460 We're showing here just the love of Christ 00:47:43.460 --> 00:47:46.460 Jesus had to meet with this woman 00:47:47.460 --> 00:47:52.460 It was the only thing that was going to make a difference in her life 00:47:52.460 --> 00:47:57.460 And the wonderful thing today is that God sent his son 00:47:58.460 --> 00:48:00.460 Into this world for that very reason 00:48:01.460 --> 00:48:03.460 To meet with sinners 00:48:04.460 --> 00:48:06.460 Not just the woman of Samaria 00:48:07.460 --> 00:48:09.460 Not just the ones we read of through the scriptures 00:48:10.460 --> 00:48:12.460 Those who had gone away from God 00:48:13.460 --> 00:48:14.460 The likes of maybe Paul 00:48:15.460 --> 00:48:16.460 You see how Jesus met with him 00:48:17.460 --> 00:48:18.460 And you think well there's a sinner 00:48:18.460 --> 00:48:20.460 He was persecuting 00:48:21.460 --> 00:48:22.460 He was killing Christians 00:48:23.460 --> 00:48:25.460 And you look at the obvious candidates 00:48:26.460 --> 00:48:27.460 And you think well there's someone who Jesus 00:48:28.460 --> 00:48:29.460 Should meet with and needs to meet with 00:48:30.460 --> 00:48:33.460 But the amazing thing is 00:48:34.460 --> 00:48:37.460 That God sent his son to meet with you 00:48:38.460 --> 00:48:40.460 Every one of us 00:48:41.460 --> 00:48:44.460 That we would encounter this loving saviour 00:48:44.460 --> 00:48:47.460 And the question is then 00:48:48.460 --> 00:48:49.460 How do you respond? 00:48:50.460 --> 00:48:53.460 What do you do with this loving saviour? 00:48:54.460 --> 00:48:56.460 This woman as she comes 00:48:57.460 --> 00:48:58.460 She begins to question 00:48:59.460 --> 00:49:00.460 She begins to ask him 00:49:01.460 --> 00:49:02.460 And you see this 00:49:03.460 --> 00:49:05.460 The loving way that Jesus speaks to her 00:49:06.460 --> 00:49:08.460 He opens up her eyes to see 00:49:09.460 --> 00:49:11.460 How much he knows about her 00:49:11.460 --> 00:49:13.460 He says in verse 16 00:49:14.460 --> 00:49:15.460 Go call your husband and come here 00:49:16.460 --> 00:49:17.460 The one answered him 00:49:17.460 --> 00:49:18.460 I have no husband 00:49:19.460 --> 00:49:20.460 Jesus said to her 00:49:20.460 --> 00:49:21.460 You are right in saying 00:49:21.460 --> 00:49:22.460 I have no husband 00:49:23.460 --> 00:49:24.460 For you have had five husbands 00:49:24.460 --> 00:49:25.460 And the one you now have 00:49:48.460 --> 00:49:49.460 As to who he is 00:49:50.460 --> 00:49:51.460 And he does it in this way 00:49:52.460 --> 00:49:53.460 Where he talks about 00:49:54.460 --> 00:49:55.460 This living water 00:49:55.460 --> 00:49:57.460 That he would get a drink from her 00:49:58.460 --> 00:49:59.460 He opens her eyes to see 00:50:00.460 --> 00:50:01.460 What is worship? 00:50:02.460 --> 00:51:49.460 And who was telling 00:51:49.460 --> 00:51:50.460 Of how he was dealing 00:51:50.460 --> 00:51:51.460 With someone who had come 00:51:52.460 --> 00:51:53.460 From a foreign land 00:51:53.460 --> 00:51:55.460 And they had 00:51:55.460 --> 00:51:56.460 He had come into this land 00:51:56.460 --> 00:51:57.460 He had been a shepherd 00:51:57.460 --> 00:51:58.460 Where he had come from 00:51:58.460 --> 00:51:59.460 And he had come 00:51:59.460 --> 00:52:00.460 To Scotland 00:52:00.460 --> 00:52:02.460 He was based in Edinburgh 00:52:02.460 --> 00:52:03.460 And he was living in this city 00:52:03.460 --> 00:52:04.460 And he just hated it 00:52:05.460 --> 00:52:06.460 He was lonely 00:52:06.460 --> 00:52:07.460 He was afraid 00:52:07.460 --> 00:52:08.460 He was isolated could explain to him 00:52:39.460 --> 00:52:41.460 The things of Christ 00:52:42.460 --> 00:52:44.460 And there are many things 00:52:44.460 --> 00:52:45.460 In our lives 00:52:45.460 --> 00:52:46.460 That we cannot understand 00:52:47.460 --> 00:52:48.460 Many paths 00:52:48.460 --> 00:52:49.460 We maybe have to go down 00:52:49.460 --> 00:52:50.460 And things that experiences 00:52:50.460 --> 00:52:51.460 We have in life 00:52:51.460 --> 00:52:53.460 And we cannot understand them 00:52:54.460 --> 00:52:55.460 But as we look back 00:52:55.460 --> 00:52:56.460 We see that God 00:52:56.460 --> 00:52:57.460 Has used them 00:52:57.460 --> 00:52:58.460 For our good 00:52:59.460 --> 00:53:00.460 To bring us to a point 00:53:00.460 --> 00:53:01.460 Where we hear 00:53:01.460 --> 00:53:03.460 Of this wonderful Saviour 00:53:07.460 --> 00:53:08.460 Jesus knew 00:53:08.460 --> 00:53:09.460 Everything about her 00:53:09.460 --> 00:53:12.460 And the scary thing 00:53:12.460 --> 00:53:13.460 For you tonight 00:53:13.460 --> 00:53:14.460 Is he knows everything about you 00:53:15.460 --> 00:53:16.460 He knows everything about me 00:53:16.460 --> 00:53:18.460 But our past 00:53:18.460 --> 00:53:19.460 Our background 00:53:19.460 --> 00:53:20.460 Is no barrier 00:53:20.460 --> 00:53:21.460 To the offer 00:53:21.460 --> 00:53:22.460 Of the gospel 00:53:22.460 --> 00:53:24.460 And that's drink 00:53:39.460 --> 00:53:40.460 And not thirst 00:53:41.460 --> 00:53:42.460 Anymore 00:53:42.460 --> 00:53:43.460 In verse 14 00:53:43.460 --> 00:53:44.460 Whoever drinks of the water 00:56:09.460 --> 00:56:10.460 To be the one 00:56:11.460 --> 00:56:12.460 The means to others 00:56:12.460 --> 00:56:13.460 Coming to know 00:56:13.460 --> 00:56:14.460 Of this Saviour 00:56:15.460 --> 00:56:16.460 And it's a great reminder 00:56:16.460 --> 00:56:17.460 To us all 00:56:18.460 --> 00:56:19.460 This woman 00:56:19.460 --> 00:56:20.460 Who had her life 00:56:20.460 --> 00:56:21.460 Changed 00:56:21.460 --> 00:56:22.460 What does she want 00:56:22.460 --> 00:56:23.460 To do now? 00:56:23.460 --> 00:56:24.460 She wants to tell people 00:56:25.460 --> 00:56:26.460 She has had this encounter 00:56:27.460 --> 00:56:28.460 She has met the Christ 00:56:28.460 --> 00:56:29.460 And she wants to say 00:56:29.460 --> 00:56:30.460 To others 00:56:30.460 --> 00:56:31.460 Come 00:56:31.460 --> 00:56:32.460 Come and see 00:56:32.460 --> 00:56:33.460 This man 00:56:33.460 --> 00:56:34.460 Could this be 00:56:34.460 --> 00:56:35.460 The Christ? 00:56:36.460 --> 00:56:37.460
