00:03:54.939 --> 00:03:57.620 How very different these sisters are. 00:03:57.800 --> 00:04:02.419 You know, no sooner has Jesus walked through the door, but Mary and Martha go in opposite directions. 00:04:03.099 --> 00:04:07.759 Read verse 39 that Mary sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 00:04:08.539 --> 00:04:11.340 But Martha was distracted with much serving. 00:04:11.900 --> 00:04:13.340 You can just picture it, can't you? 00:04:13.400 --> 00:04:20.279 Martha run off her feet in the kitchen, five things cooking away on the hob, dashing out to set the table. 00:04:20.720 --> 00:04:22.560 She's being pulled in every direction. 00:04:22.560 --> 00:04:30.459 And meanwhile, Mary has settled herself down right next to Jesus and is just caught up in what he is saying. 00:04:31.280 --> 00:04:34.980 You know, you can feel the tension just building in the house, can't you? 00:04:35.040 --> 00:04:37.120 It's all too much for Martha. 00:04:37.759 --> 00:04:44.480 Why am I here doing all the work for Jesus when she's there just spending time with Jesus? 00:04:44.980 --> 00:04:46.139 It's so unfair. 00:04:46.139 --> 00:04:53.719 If you've got siblings yourself, you know how easy it is for brothers and sisters to get under each other's skin. 00:04:54.759 --> 00:04:58.300 But I think there's more here than plain sibling rivalry. 00:04:58.759 --> 00:05:01.800 Because notice who Martha's problem is really with. 00:05:02.240 --> 00:05:03.060 In verse 40, 00:05:03.060 --> 00:05:16.759 Martha is angry with Jesus. 00:05:17.420 --> 00:05:21.500 You know, Martha's head, she was doing and giving so much for Jesus. 00:05:22.300 --> 00:05:24.959 And from the outside, it would have looked like that to you. 00:05:24.959 --> 00:05:33.859 But at heart, everything that Martha was trying to do for Jesus was actually taking her further from Jesus. 00:05:34.819 --> 00:05:38.459 But surely, you know, we think serving Jesus, that must be a good thing. 00:05:39.079 --> 00:05:39.759 And it is. 00:05:40.620 --> 00:05:43.339 But who was Martha really serving? 00:07:13.500 --> 00:07:19.779 Well, firstly, when we're not actually taking time to spend with him, taking his good news to heart. 00:07:20.339 --> 00:07:25.879 You, like Martha, we might be serving and helping and working and doing all kinds of good things. 00:07:25.879 --> 00:07:29.339 We might even think we're doing those things for Jesus. 00:07:30.060 --> 00:07:38.939 But if the rest of life is squeezing out that relationship, pushing out those times that we spend with Jesus. 00:07:39.060 --> 00:07:41.300 Opening his word, coming to him in prayer. 00:07:41.839 --> 00:07:45.920 Just taking in who he is and his rescue of us. 00:07:45.920 --> 00:07:53.100 And in our hearts, we are distracted and drifting away from the very one that we need. 00:07:54.300 --> 00:08:04.620 But secondly, and maybe more subtly, we can tell we're distracted from him when our lives, including our service, basically becomes all about us. 00:08:05.379 --> 00:08:10.439 You, Martha was outwardly serving, but her words tell a different story, don't they? 00:08:10.439 --> 00:08:13.439 Inside, she was self-pitying and defensive. 00:08:14.339 --> 00:08:20.339 Because her gaze wasn't fixed on Jesus, her work was turning her gaze in on herself. 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:24.639 And that happens to us all when we think we can get by without Jesus. 00:08:25.319 --> 00:08:27.139 We kind of carve in on ourselves. 00:08:27.740 --> 00:08:32.440 That's what the reformer Martin Luther, that's how he describes our sin. 00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:39.980 That instinct to make it all about us, instead of coming to Jesus and drinking in his grace. 00:08:40.440 --> 00:08:46.520 When we're distracted from Jesus, even our serving becomes self-serving. 00:08:47.680 --> 00:08:52.240 So here's maybe a question to ask at home or online this week. 00:08:53.240 --> 00:08:58.280 What in your life currently threatens to distract you from Jesus?
