There's no doubt he wants us to feel drama here in this story. 00:00:32.920 --> 00:00:36.120 Absolutely. 00:00:36.120 --> 00:00:42.200 If you've ever watched, and I doubt unless you've watched some because Mark is split into episodes. 00:01:52.319 --> 00:01:58.079 And Jesus is the central character, obviously, throughout the gospel of Mark. 00:01:58.079 --> 00:02:00.000 And he's been revealing who he is. 00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:01.679 Mark's been revealing who he is. 00:02:01.679 --> 00:02:06.519 And in this section, as we've seen over the last number of weeks, it's been talking about 00:02:06.519 --> 00:02:09.199 discipleship, what it means to follow Jesus. 00:02:09.199 --> 00:02:14.280 And Jesus all the time has been dripping in three very significant times, dripping in 00:02:14.280 --> 00:02:19.599 the prophecy of the crucifixion and the resurrection each time and the suffering of Jesus. 00:02:19.599 --> 00:02:23.199 And he's been bringing that into this episode very powerfully. 00:02:23.199 --> 00:02:27.280 And it's critical to see that. 00:02:27.280 --> 00:02:29.799 And it's critical to recognize that. 00:02:29.799 --> 00:02:36.599 And it's critical that we see the gospel in every single section of this great gospel 00:02:36.599 --> 00:02:42.719 that is given to us by Mark because whether you're just maybe investigating Christianity, 00:02:42.719 --> 00:02:45.479 if you are, it's brilliant to see you today. 00:02:45.479 --> 00:02:48.120 But if not, and you've been a Christian for a long time. 00:02:48.120 --> 00:02:51.719 The gospel message remains absolutely critical and central. 00:02:51.719 --> 00:02:56.080 And the gospel story needs to be the heart of our lives, not just, as we've said very 00:02:56.080 --> 00:02:58.840 often, not just at the beginning of our lives. 00:02:58.840 --> 00:03:04.039 And so what is being said here is hugely significant because this is no Netflix show. 00:03:04.039 --> 00:03:05.960 This is no wee But there's tension in the air. 00:03:52.159 --> 00:03:56.959 He's moving towards Jerusalem where His enemies are and He's spoken about His crucifixion 00:03:56.959 --> 00:04:00.680 and His suffering and His death, but He's on the way towards them. 00:04:00.680 --> 00:04:02.319 But there's tension. 00:04:02.319 --> 00:04:03.879 The disciples are gathered around Him. 00:04:03.879 --> 00:04:06.479 They're walking with Him and He's gathered a great crowd. 00:04:06.479 --> 00:04:09.560 The crowd are interested in Him. 00:04:09.560 --> 00:04:13.800 Maybe not because He's going to the cross for sure, but they have some kind of idea 00:04:13.800 --> 00:04:18.959 that He's a special person and that He's possibly a Messiah and they're interested 00:04:18.959 --> 00:04:25.000 in Him that He's going to Rome potentially to claim a Roman scalp and to claim the crown 00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:29.000 that will set the people of Israel free. 00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:32.519 And so there's this crowd, but like what's outside today? 00:04:32.519 --> 00:04:37.000 A crowd gathering outside, but there's maybe not a focus of anyone today. 00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:43.279 Maybe if Usain Bolt came along, then there would be a big crowd around Him as the athletes 00:04:43.279 --> 00:04:44.959 are going out for their run. 00:04:44.959 --> 00:04:47.879 But there was this crowd around Jesus and they were moving forward together. 00:04:47.879 --> 00:04:51.199 You know what it's like when a great crowd moved together. 00:04:51.199 --> 00:04:58.000 And then above the noise, above the hubbub of noise of this crowd moving towards Jerusalem, 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:06.879 the blind beggar shouts, the Son of Timmyus, Son of David, have mercy on me. 00:05:06.879 --> 00:05:09.600 He shouts above the crowd. 00:05:09.600 --> 00:05:16.000 Now, doubtless, He didn't really understand exactly who Jesus is, but He knew enough to 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:18.040 cry out for mercy, didn't He? 00:05:18.040 --> 00:05:20.399 He knew enough to cry out for mercy. 00:05:20.399 --> 00:05:21.399 It's chaotic. 00:05:21.399 --> 00:05:23.399 Ah, shut up, you old clown. 00:05:23.399 --> 00:05:26.279 I don't know if he 00:13:59.879 But I think the deep spiritual reality is there. 00:13:59.879 --> 00:14:01.120 He saw the healer. 00:14:01.120 --> 00:14:02.120 He saw the Lord. 00:14:02.120 --> 00:14:07.599 And his life was turned around and he left the old one behind, symbolized by throwing 00:14:07.599 --> 00:14:09.120 his cloak aside. 00:14:09.120 --> 00:14:12.919 That cloak was the old cloak that I used to beg on. 00:14:12.919 --> 00:14:15.519 But I'm not going to need that anymore. 00:14:15.519 --> 00:14:17.679 Now that's the story that we got here. 00:14:17.679 --> 00:14:24.480 This dramatic story is historically real, undoubtedly, without any shadow of a doubt. 00:14:24.480 --> 00:14:31.720 However, it also has a deeper spiritual message that Mark intended it to have because of where 00:14:31.720 --> 00:14:35.200 it's placed in the gospel. 00:14:35.200 --> 00:14:40.200 Without doubt, the section that Mark has written here, this episode of Mark's gospel is carefully 00:14:40.200 --> 00:14:41.200 crafted. 00:14:41.200 --> 00:14:44.560 It's not just thrown together haphazardly. 00:14:44.560 --> 00:14:46.160 It's carefully crafted. 00:14:46.160 --> 00:14:52.680 It begins, interestingly, in chapter 8 verse 22, this section, with this healing of a blind 00:14:52.680 --> 00:14:55.480 man. 00:14:55.480 --> 00:15:00.480 And it finishes this section with the healing of a blind man. 00:15:00.480 --> 00:15:08.200 Because, and the contrast particularly between the disciples and Bartimaeus is powerful in 00:15:08.200 --> 00:15:14.560 that you've got Bartimaeus who is a poor nobody in the eyes of the crowd and the people around 00:15:14.560 --> 00:15:15.800 him, he's a beggar. 00:15:15.800 --> 00:15:21.440 And yet he sees, and the disciples who follow Jesus for all these years, they were blind. 00:15:21.440 --> 00:15:22.440 He couldn't see. 00:15:22.440 --> 00:15:23.840 Can you see the contrast? 00:15:23.840 --> 00:15:29.200 You see, and Corey was talking about that last week, the incredible counterintuitive nature 00:15:29.200 --> 00:15:30.200 of the gospel. 00:15:30.200 --> 00:15:33.040 It always turns our understanding upside down. 00:15:33.040 -->
