I've always had an interest in it and a bunch of 00:00:12.679 --> 00:00:21.780 little facts, such as this one. It is known as the shortest war in history. In fact, it's one of the 00:00:21.780 --> 00:00:30.240 greatest mismatches of power of all time. It occurred on the 27th of August, 1896. It's known 00:00:30.240 --> 00:00:39.579 as the Anglo-Zanzibar War. It turns out a usurper had taken the throne in Zanzibar, which is now part 00:00:39.579 --> 00:00:46.180 of Tanzania in Africa. It was an area that was kind of controlled by the British at the time. 00:00:46.920 --> 00:00:51.579 The British didn't like the fact that this person had sidestepped the process and taken 00:00:51.579 --> 00:00:58.879 the throne. They hit him with an ultimatum for this pretend ruler to step down, for him to stand 00:00:58.879 --> 00:01:07.719 down his troops and to evacuate the palace, to vacate the palace. In the meantime, while that 00:01:07.719 --> 00:01:14.200 ultimatum was out there, the British forces brought their navy in, their marines, their sailors, and they 00:01:14.200 --> 00:01:21.459 managed to get about 900 locals on side. As it turns out, the ultimatum was ignored. 00:01:21.579 --> 00:01:26.539 I think the deadline was something like nine o'clock on a Monday morning or something like that. It was 00:01:26.539 --> 00:01:37.179 ignored. At 9.01, the bombardment started. The pretender to the throne lost 500 soldiers, 00:01:37.900 --> 00:01:44.120 and the British lost one. When they say lost one, they had one soldier wounded. I think a self-inflicted 00:01:44.120 --> 00:01:50.719 wound, but that was all. It was a massive mismatch of power. In 38 minutes, it was all done. 00:01:50.719 --> 00:01:57.079 38 minutes, and the white flag went up above the palace. One of the biggest mismatches of power in 00:01:57.079 --> 00:02:04.400 history. But it's not as big as the mismatch we've seen in the last couple of chapters in Exodus and 00:02:04.400 --> 00:02:12.860 what John took us to last week. God's chosen people, Israel, are in slavery in Egypt, and through Moses, 00:02:12.860 --> 00:02:21.580 the God of all creation calls Pharaoh to release his people that they might worship him and serve him. 00:02:21.660 --> 00:02:29.200 Release them from slavery here that they might serve me over here. And Pharaoh, as we saw last week, 00:02:29.340 --> 00:02:37.400 defiantly declares, who is this Lord that I should obey him? In other words, I will not submit to him. 00:02:37.400 --> 00:02:44.740 I will not obey that ultimatum. And I'm going to continue on enslaving God's people. And so God 00:02:44.740 --> 00:02:52.319 shows him, and in fact, as it says in the early chapters of Exodus, that all the world might see 00:02:52.319 --> 00:03:04.219 that he is on the throne alone. And so what he does is, one by one, he defeats the pretend gods of Egypt. 00:03:04.219 --> 00:03:12.719 And today, we come to the final one, the final plague. We've had nine. This is the last plague. 00:03:12.819 --> 00:03:22.800 This final plague, in fact, gets us to the heart and to the uniqueness of the God of the Bible and 00:03:22.800 --> 00:03:28.639 of the Christian faith. So what I want us to see today, three things. If you've got the St. Paul's 00:03:28.639 --> 00:03:34.639 app, it'd be great if you open it up, because you can see the outline there. I've got three main points 00:03:34.639 --> 00:03:40.059 and a couple of other sub points in there. What I want us to see is what this passage says about the 00:03:40.059 --> 00:03:47.339 sacrificial lamb. I want to then trace through the Bible the drama of the lamb, and finally, 00:03:47.879 --> 00:03:54.000 to issue a call to look to the lamb. So first of all, the sacrificial lamb. Nine times, 00:03:54.000 --> 00:04:07.500 God has called Pharaoh to release his people, or there will be a plague. Nine times, they have ignored it. 00:04:08.020 --> 00:04:16.720 And every time, as John said last week, every single plague is a taking down of one of the deities of 00:04:16.720 --> 00:04:25.040 Egypt. Nine times, he's called it. Nine times, he said there will be punishment. Nine times, 00:04:25.080 --> 00:04:29.880 there have been a plague. Every single time, they've ignored it, and there is a consequence. 00:04:30.520 --> 00:04:35.440 And the final straw is in chapter 12, verse 12. This is the final one. 00:04:36.300 --> 00:04:42.600 On that same night, I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and 00:04:42.600 --> 00:04:51.760 animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. And so the final plague 00:04:51.760 --> 00:05:04.120 is the final defeat of Egypt's deities. And the Pharaoh was regarded as the incarnation 00:05:04.120 --> 00:05:14.740 of one of one of those deities, the sun god. The Egyptian deity, who in fact was defeated in the 00:05:14.740 --> 00:05:22.879 previous plague, the plague of darkness. And so this final plague, number 10, the final plague 00:05:22.879 --> 00:05:32.939 is to kill the firstborn, is to destroy the incarnation. This is the final defeat. 00:05:34.120 --> 00:05:43.360 Of the gods of Egypt. And in verse 23, Moses is speaking to the Israelites about what God has 00:05:43.360 --> 00:05:53.360 said. And he says this to them, he, that's God, will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses 00:05:53.360 --> 00:06:06.600 and strike you down. One of the themes that runs through the whole Bible is that when you violate 00:06:06.600 --> 00:06:13.819 God's design for creation, when you violate his design for our bodies and for relationships, in fact, 00:06:13.860 --> 00:06:22.139 he's designed for everything in life, what gets unleashed at that point are forces of decay and chaos. 00:06:22.139 --> 00:06:31.360 And all this decay and chaos has a trajectory towards a final accounting, final reckoning, 00:06:31.759 --> 00:06:40.279 a final judgment for living life as if the God of this universe does not exist, and going about daily 00:06:40.279 --> 00:06:49.399 life, violating all of his good purposes for life. And this is what this account here in Exodus 11 and 12 00:06:49.399 --> 00:07:00.560 is pointing us towards. When God says the destroyer will come, he is saying that the time of reckoning is upon you. 00:07:00.560 --> 00:07:11.300 And he's bringing it. He's the one who's bringing the reckoning. And on this one night in Egypt, 00:07:11.720 --> 00:07:20.420 the destroyer will come and they will bring, he will bring judgment. Justice will be upheld for the 00:07:20.420 --> 00:07:30.360 oppression of Israel. God will hold them accountable for violating his will, his design, and his purposes 00:07:30.360 --> 00:07:37.480 for life. And in fact, the Bible, the thing of the Bible is that every single human being will be held 00:07:37.480 --> 00:07:43.160 accountable for violating his will, design, and purpose for life. 00:07:43.160 --> 00:07:54.240 But in Exodus 11 and 12, alongside this news of devastating, irreversible judgment to come upon 00:07:54.240 --> 00:08:03.100 the most powerful nation on earth, there is good news in here. God also reveals at the same time 00:08:03.100 --> 00:08:14.200 that there is only one way to stand against the destroyer. There is only one way to be protected. 00:08:14.320 --> 00:08:21.439 There is only one way to find refuge when the destroyer comes. And the answer is a lamb. 00:08:21.439 --> 00:08:40.860 A lamb. That's it. Our little sheep. How on earth can Israel be protected from the most devastating 00:08:40.860 --> 00:08:50.340 power in the universe by Curly and Sean? I mean, how's that possible? 00:08:50.340 --> 00:09:01.660 It doesn't make any sense. This is, however, what God instructs here. He instructs his people to kill 00:09:01.660 --> 00:09:10.180 a perfect lamb. Put the blood of the lamb on your doorposts and eat the lamb in haste. And when the 00:09:10.180 --> 00:09:17.940 destroyer comes, the destroyer will notice that your house is covered in the lamb, the lamb's blood, 00:09:17.940 --> 00:09:24.080 blood, and it will pass over you. And then you'll be liberated from slavery. 00:09:26.220 --> 00:09:29.440 That's the essence of Exodus 11 and 12. 00:09:29.440 --> 00:09:40.440 Now, that is confusing at best. But it's also offensive to the modern person. 00:09:41.720 --> 00:09:51.400 This passage here that was just read out to us makes no sense at all unless it's put in the context 00:09:51.399 --> 00:10:00.779 context of the whole Bible in its historical context. We need to understand the drama of the lamb 00:10:00.779 --> 00:10:05.240 to get the meaning of what's happening here in Exodus 11 and 12. 00:10:07.639 --> 00:10:09.860 So let's look at the drama of the lamb. 00:10:09.860 --> 00:10:21.440 The first scene of the drama of the lamb in the Bible is Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22. 00:10:22.139 --> 00:10:25.980 So if you've got your Bibles, you can flick over to Genesis 22. We'll be there for a little bit. 00:10:27.320 --> 00:10:33.379 God instructs Abraham to offer up his only son, Isaac, as a sacrifice to him. 00:10:33.379 --> 00:10:41.820 Now, when I read that as a modern person, my instinct is to think how really inappropriate 00:10:41.820 --> 00:10:50.580 thing for God to say to Abraham to go and offer up his son, Isaac, as a sacrifice. It's insane to 00:10:50.580 --> 00:10:57.899 the modern mind and especially the modern Western sensibilities. Surely Abraham would have thought 00:10:57.899 --> 00:11:03.500 exactly the same as I do. Surely Abraham has the same mind on this that I do. 00:11:06.259 --> 00:11:14.279 No. No, he wouldn't have. He exists in a different cultural context than we do. 00:11:15.659 --> 00:11:20.620 We tend to think, and especially those of us who are marinating in a Western culture, 00:11:20.620 --> 00:11:27.340 we think in terms of individualism. Ancient people didn't have individual aspirations. 00:11:27.899 --> 00:11:33.659 Aspirations were for the prominence and for the success and for the prosperity of their family. 00:11:33.919 --> 00:11:39.819 It was deeply connected to their family and tribe. If a family member acted shamefully, 00:11:40.120 --> 00:11:44.980 then the whole family was responsible for that member acting shamefully. 00:11:46.379 --> 00:11:52.659 We don't think like that in Western culture and certainly not in Australian Western culture. 00:11:52.659 --> 00:11:57.439 We are our own people. We are radically individualistic. 00:11:58.879 --> 00:12:03.360 And so if I've got a delinquent brother or sister, that's their problem, not mine. 00:12:03.620 --> 00:12:09.919 If they're shameful, that's no shame on me. That's not how it worked in Abraham's culture. 00:12:11.059 --> 00:12:18.339 We are radically individualistic. And yet the reality is for us is that we are so much the product 00:12:18.340 --> 00:12:27.540 of our family for both good and bad. Abraham also existed in a time and a culture when the firstborn son 00:12:27.540 --> 00:12:32.899 got everything. They inherited the entire estate. 00:12:35.180 --> 00:12:42.540 And so God's message to Abraham in Genesis 22 was absolutely crystal clear to him, 00:12:42.539 --> 00:12:48.360 even if it's confusing or monstrous to us. 00:12:49.699 --> 00:12:56.679 In fact, Exodus 22 verse 29 helps us understand what is happening here in Genesis 22. 00:12:57.819 --> 00:13:01.399 You must give me the firstborn of your sons. 00:13:01.980 --> 00:13:04.319 Do the same with your cattle and your sheep. 00:13:04.320 --> 00:13:15.540 The life of every firstborn was God's unless the life of that firstborn was redeemed. 00:13:16.840 --> 00:13:22.400 Every year they had to pay the price of redemption for the firstborn. 00:13:22.840 --> 00:13:28.920 Otherwise, the life of the firstborn would be forfeited for the sake of the family. 00:13:28.919 --> 00:13:37.659 And the clear message to ancient Israel was that there is a debt that hangs over every family. 00:13:38.439 --> 00:13:39.219 There's a debt. 00:13:40.099 --> 00:13:44.039 The firstborn was liable for the life of that family. 00:13:45.479 --> 00:13:48.059 And the way of life of that family. 00:13:50.079 --> 00:13:52.019 The family goes stray. 00:13:52.539 --> 00:13:54.059 The firstborn's responsible. 00:13:54.059 --> 00:14:00.939 That makes no sense to the modern individualistic mind, 00:14:01.039 --> 00:14:04.500 but it's absolutely crystal clear to Abraham what's happening here. 00:14:06.259 --> 00:14:08.539 And that's why Abraham doesn't balk at it. 00:14:11.939 --> 00:14:14.219 But if God... 00:14:14.219 --> Father, yes, my son, Abraham replied, 00:15:15.959 --> 00:15:18.059 the fire and the wood are here, 00:15:19.059 --> 00:15:20.939 but where is the lamb? 00:15:21.939 --> 00:15:24.839 Where's the lamb for the burnt offering? 00:15:24.840 --> 00:15:28.320 Abraham answered, 00:15:28.320 --> 00:15:32.139 God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son. 00:15:33.120 --> 00:15:35.899 Abraham would have been hoping with all of his being 00:15:35.899 --> 00:15:38.759 that that would actually be true. 00:15:39.060 --> 00:15:42.600 He's not just distracting Isaac from the truth of 00:16:18.519 --> 00:16:20.240 Don't like that concept at all. 00:16:21.459 --> 00:16:23.659 Most of us have been marinating in 00:16:23.659 --> 00:16:25.620 and therefore bought into the notion 00:16:25.620 --> 00:16:27.899 that we live by our own standards, 00:16:28.019 --> 00:16:30.740 we determine what is right and wrong for us, 00:16:31.299 --> 00:16:34.539 and we do that either as an individual, 00:16:35.179 --> 00:16:36.639 we do that individualistically, 00:16:36.839 --> 00:16:38.259 or we do it as a family group, 00:16:38.799 --> 00:16:39.579 as a tribe. 00:16:40.799 --> 00:16:44.299 Now, if that is you, 00:16:44.479 --> 00:16:46.000 that is you're bought into that notion, 00:16:46.179 --> 00:16:47.939 and if you have bought into that notion, 00:16:48.959 -->
