--> 00:07:52.699 What does Jesus do in the face of suffering and death? 00:07:53.040 --> 00:07:56.840 This is the question which these stories address, and we will look at them together. 00:07:57.639 --> 00:08:03.540 Now, for a little bit of background, we're getting back into the Gospel of Mark after a bit of an Advent hiatus. 00:08:03.540 --> 00:08:10.100 Going back to Mark chapter 4, verse 35, there are three stories expressing Jesus' power. 00:08:10.460 --> 00:08:17.680 At the end of chapter 4, Jesus shows his power over the sea and calming the storm on the Sea of Galilee. 00:08:17.920 --> 00:08:20.920 The beginning of chapter 5 that Pastor Nick preached on last week, 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:25.560 Jesus frees a man from demon possession in the country of the Gerasenes. 00:08:25.560 --> 00:08:32.840 And then today we see Jesus in the face of sickness and death, demonstrating his power again. 00:08:33.360 --> 00:08:39.019 And as you read the story, you probably noticed that this is what commentators call a narrative sandwich. 00:08:39.639 --> 00:08:39.799 Right? 00:08:39.879 --> 00:08:43.379 There are two slices of bread about the ruler of the synagogue, Jairus. 00:08:43.679 --> 00:08:46.480 And then there's the meat in the middle, which is a story about a woman. 00:08:46.779 --> 00:08:49.000 And they reinforce one another. 00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:55.139 And in fact, by making it a sandwich of two stories around the same theme, 00:08:55.220 --> 00:09:00.100 we see a fuller vision of Jesus' character and work than we would have on their own. 00:09:00.159 --> 00:09:04.559 And that's why he does that, and that's why we're dealing with these stories together. 00:09:05.200 --> 00:09:11.419 And what we're going to see as we look at this passage this morning is two very simple, very profound things. 00:09:11.980 --> 00:09:17.360 First, we will see that Jesus meets us in our fear of sickness and death. 00:09:17.360 --> 00:09:23.300 And then that Jesus restores us from the power of sickness and death. 00:09:23.560 --> 00:09:25.580 So if you're taking notes, that's our outline. 00:09:25.700 --> 00:09:26.879 We've got two points this morning. 00:09:27.340 --> 00:09:32.340 First, Jesus meets us in our fear of sickness and death. 00:09:32.740 --> 00:09:40.480 Now, Jesus has been over across the Sea of Galilee in a region called the Decapolis, the Gentile Virgin. 00:09:40.639 --> 00:09:42.379 He's now gotten back in a boat. 00:09:42.379 --> 00:09:44.879 He's come back across into the Jewish section. 00:09:46.580 --> 00:09:52.139 And as has been the practice, he's surrounded by crowds as soon as he arrives. 00:09:52.840 --> 00:09:57.700 And the story begins because a man, a ruler of the synagogue, Jairus shows up, 00:09:57.740 --> 00:10:00.480 a ruler of the synagogue wouldn't have been a rabbi or a teacher, 00:10:00.639 --> 00:10:06.820 but someone who had actually the practical organizational role of making sure the synagogue worked, 00:10:06.940 --> 00:10:09.700 that people were there to do their things, that the supplies were made. 00:10:09.759 --> 00:10:10.700 That's what his role was. 00:10:10.700 --> 00:10:13.860 It was a significant one and an important one. 00:10:14.200 --> 00:10:17.720 He would have been used to being able to be in control of his life. 00:10:18.720 --> 00:10:21.879 And yet he faced a situation in which he was not in control. 00:10:22.580 --> 00:10:24.080 For his daughter was sick. 00:10:25.940 --> 00:10:27.640 And he didn't know what to do. 00:10:27.639 --> 00:10:34.199 Now, in the middle of the story, we'll see this woman come in. 00:10:34.279 --> 00:10:41.399 And what I want to do is actually draw some parallels and also distinctions between these two characters as they come to Jesus. 00:10:41.899 --> 00:10:48.720 He comes with this need to, this desire, feeling out of control, looking for help. 00:10:48.720 --> 00:11:00.000 He comes in fear because he can't do anything to save his daughter. 00:11:01.279 --> 00:11:02.440 Then there's a woman. 00:11:02.660 --> 00:11:06.519 A woman comes seeking him as well. 00:11:06.519 --> 00:11:12.360 But she has been coming with a different kind of fear because she's been ostracized by her illness. 00:11:12.899 --> 00:11:20.220 In the Jewish world, if you had the kind of disease that she had, you would have been declared richly unclean. 00:11:20.360 --> 00:11:22.720 That would have prevented her from going to the temple. 00:11:23.019 --> 00:11:27.919 Would have prevented her from normal interaction because she would have made others who interacted with her 00:11:27.919 --> 00:11:31.879 Richly unclean and unable to participate in temple life. 00:11:32.240 --> 00:11:35.519 So she was ostracized by her chronic illness. 00:11:36.339 --> 00:11:40.000 An untouchable outside of the community of faith. 00:11:41.219 --> 00:11:43.059 And they both come in fear. 00:11:44.259 --> 00:11:46.299 Hoping that Jesus might help them. 00:11:47.139 --> 00:11:48.599 They both come in faith. 00:11:49.419 --> 00:11:50.179 It's remarkable. 00:11:50.399 --> 00:11:51.919 They both express this. 00:11:53.539 --> 00:11:57.539 Jairus says, if you come, you can heal her and give her life. 00:11:57.919 --> 00:12:06.539 The woman says to herself, if I only touch his garment, he can heal me and free me. 00:12:08.399 --> 00:12:11.959 But they come with some distinctions between them as well. 00:12:12.479 --> 00:12:15.199 Jairus is an important person in the community. 00:12:15.919 --> 00:12:17.379 Jairus is a powerful person. 00:12:17.559 --> 00:12:18.240 And you see this. 00:12:18.379 --> 00:12:18.979 It's remarkable. 00:12:19.120 --> 00:12:20.559 He gets a name in the story. 00:12:20.899 --> 00:12:26.039 Which is actually, it stands out because often people don't get names in Mark's story. 00:12:26.039 --> 00:12:27.939 And the woman doesn't have a name. 00:12:28.019 --> 00:12:28.959 But he gets a name. 00:12:29.079 --> 00:12:29.480 Jairus. 00:12:30.059 --> 00:12:30.959 And he comes. 00:12:31.079 --> 00:12:33.419 And when he comes, he comes face to face to Jesus. 00:12:33.519 --> 00:12:35.559 He does fall on his knees before him. 00:12:35.799 --> 00:12:36.939 But he calls Jesus. 00:12:37.099 --> 00:12:37.980 Come to my house. 00:12:38.480 --> 00:12:40.599 Come and be the solution to my problem. 00:12:40.600 --> 00:12:51.100 She, however, as an outcast, as a woman, doesn't even dare to approach him from the front. 00:12:51.480 --> 00:12:53.279 She comes to him from behind. 00:12:54.320 --> 00:12:56.060 Says, if I can only touch him. 00:12:58.500 --> 00:13:02.000 She comes as an untouchable, poor, and alone. 00:13:02.980 --> 00:13:04.500 He had all these resources. 00:13:04.980 --> 00:13:05.899 She had nothing. 00:13:05.899 --> 00:13:09.679 She had wasted or used up all of her resources. 00:13:10.199 --> 00:13:12.319 And had nothing to show for it. 00:13:14.340 --> 00:13:18.299 And yet, for both of these, Jesus meets them. 00:13:20.199 --> 00:13:24.799 Jesus looks at Jairus in his desperation and says, I will come with you. 00:13:26.179 --> 00:13:28.699 And remember that Jesus didn't always do this. 00:13:29.019 --> 00:13:32.319 Remember we saw back in chapter 1, verse 38, 00:13:32.320 --> 00:13:36.260 that there were many people thronging at Jesus' door. 00:13:36.600 --> 00:13:40.080 Many more people to be healed and for their demons to be cast out. 00:13:40.160 --> 00:13:44.820 And Jesus said, no, I've got to keep going because I'm here for a greater purpose 00:13:44.820 --> 00:13:47.540 than simply healing everybody. 00:13:47.920 --> 00:13:51.240 So Jesus didn't always heal, but he did. 00:13:51.340 --> 00:13:56.280 He responded to Jairus in compassion and began to go with him. 00:13:56.279 --> 00:14:02.259 He also met the woman in a remarkable way. 00:14:02.779 --> 00:14:07.240 Because she tried to sneak up and be healed without having to actually interact. 00:14:07.480 --> 00:14:13.399 She wanted his power, but didn't dare believe that he would want a relationship with her. 00:14:14.120 --> 00:14:17.919 But when it happens, Jesus knows something has happened.
