Amen. 00:01:08.400 --> 00:01:16.700 As we come to Psalm 25, before we read Psalm 25, I want to do a little preface work. 00:01:16.700 --> 00:01:21.500 And the preface work is going to come from a verse in John chapter 14. 00:01:22.140 --> 00:01:26.980 And this is a verse that repeats an idea that is found in other parts of Scripture. 00:01:28.100 --> 00:01:33.719 It's the idea that Jesus conveys that if we ask anything in his name, he will do it. 00:01:34.340 --> 00:01:40.939 And this is an example of one of those instances where Jesus says, all you need to do is ask, and I will do it. 00:01:41.100 --> 00:01:42.020 Let me read that verse for us. 00:01:42.019 --> 00:01:46.439 This is going to come from John 14, verses 13 and 14. 00:01:47.399 --> 00:01:52.259 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 00:01:52.539 --> 00:01:56.420 If you ask anything in my name, I will do it. 00:01:58.120 --> 00:02:00.079 So, we come to a verse like this. 00:02:01.019 --> 00:02:02.699 Does that mean we can really ask anything? 00:02:03.379 --> 00:02:05.799 And that God will do it for us? 00:02:05.799 --> 00:02:14.800 And I consider to remember coming to this verse at a season of life and thinking, they don't really mean that, right? 00:02:15.460 --> 00:02:17.840 Like, it's not like a wish list, is it? 00:02:17.939 --> 00:02:24.539 Like, I don't think that's worked that way, you know, as I had gone through my walk of faith up to that point. 00:02:24.639 --> 00:02:28.539 I felt like, you know, there were some times I asked for things that God didn't seem to come through it. 00:02:28.539 --> 00:02:34.199 But one of the things I want us to think about is what are the kind of things that we do ask from God? 00:02:34.840 --> 00:02:38.739 That's going to be an important thing for us this evening as we look. 00:02:39.979 --> 00:02:42.319 What are the things that we are asking from God? 00:02:42.359 --> 00:02:44.539 And who is the benefit of those things of which we ask? 00:02:45.680 --> 00:02:49.139 And certainly one of the things I want us to see this evening, we know this as we start. 00:02:49.519 --> 00:02:53.899 This is something I think that we know, is that God's not a genie in a bottle, right? 00:02:53.900 --> 00:02:57.099 We don't rub the lamp and out pops God to fulfill whatever you want. 00:02:58.219 --> 00:03:02.840 But what Jesus does say, though, he says, hey, if you ask anything in my name, I will do it. 00:03:03.480 --> 00:03:10.099 And as we go into Psalm 25, I want us to have that idea in our mind. 00:03:10.420 --> 00:03:13.200 What is it that Jesus will do for us? 00:03:13.340 --> 00:03:20.159 Like, what does this mean when Jesus says, if you ask for anything, that I will do. 00:03:20.159 --> 00:03:32.400 As we come and also preface this psalm for us this evening, one of the things that I do want us to think about, too, 00:03:32.659 --> 00:03:39.800 is that God didn't send his son into the world and send his son to a cross on our behalf, right? 00:10:07.240 --> 00:10:09.779 If we come before God saying. 00:10:10.199 --> 00:10:12.659 God, I need to submit to you better. 00:10:13.799 --> 00:10:16.480 I recognize the failure of my own will. 00:10:16.579 --> 00:10:20.519 I recognize my tendency to find my own path. 00:10:21.100 --> 00:10:24.079 I recognize the tendency to turn away from your truth. 00:10:24.080 --> 00:10:27.440 I recognize the tendency to try to teach myself. 00:10:29.860 --> 00:10:33.560 So why don't we come and pray those prayers before God? 00:10:33.559 --> 00:10:36.359 I would say this. 00:10:36.359 --> 00:10:39.500 It's because we don't want them answered. 00:10:41.199 --> 00:10:46.299 There's part of us that still struggles with that sin that wants to rule our life. 00:10:46.299 --> 00:10:48.939 And when we come and pray. 00:10:48.939 --> 00:10:50.139 God, teach me. 00:10:52.379 --> 00:10:53.819 Let me submit to you. 00:10:54.379 --> 00:10:55.879 God's going to be like, I got you. 00:10:56.719 --> 00:10:57.740 Let's make that happen. 00:10:57.740 --> 00:10:57.820 God. 00:10:58.860 --> 00:11:01.299 But there's part of us that doesn't want that to happen. 00:11:02.360 --> 00:11:05.299 So my challenge for you this evening as you come and think of prayers. 00:11:05.700 --> 00:11:07.159 Is to pray of submission. 00:11:07.980 --> 00:11:10.539 True, indeed, full submission before the Lord. 00:11:10.539 --> 00:11:13.639 And I put it out there with a word of warning. 00:11:14.939 --> 00:11:19.219 That if you pray such prayers, God will go to work on your life. 00:11:20.099 --> 00:11:22.419 And it may not be a pleasant experience. 00:11:22.659 --> 00:11:26.019 But it will be an experience that is better for you. 00:11:27.480 --> 00:11:28.799 Second thing I want us to see. 00:11:29.759 --> 00:11:33.679 Is that there are prayer for forgiveness of sins. 00:11:34.000 --> 00:11:38.159 So as we look at the prayer for the forgiveness of sins. 00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:46.939 One of the things I want you to think about is why do you, why do I, why do we seek the forgiveness of sins? 00:11:47.719 --> 00:11:56.059 Each Sunday when we come to our service, part of our service is the confession of sin. 00:11:56.559 --> 00:11:57.939 The corporate confession of sin. 00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:01.319 Then we have a time of individual confession of sin. 00:12:02.279 --> 00:12:07.000 So why do we come and seek the forgiveness of our sins? 00:12:08.159 --> 00:12:14.699 As you think about that, I'm going to just point out a philosophical perspective. 00:12:14.860 --> 00:12:15.980 It's called egoism. 00:12:17.159 --> 00:12:24.079 Egoism is rooted in the idea that everything that we do comes from self-interest. 00:12:25.639 --> 00:12:30.980 And obviously that's not compatible with what we think of as the scripture and what God desires for us. 00:12:30.980 --> 00:12:35.960 But that is a perspective that some people hold to. 00:12:36.039 --> 00:12:39.300 That everything that we do comes from self-interest. 00:12:39.420 --> 00:12:41.180 And it's this idea of egoism. 00:12:42.539 --> 00:12:46.320 So with egoism, why do you stay late to help a co-worker? 00:12:47.820 --> 00:12:51.860 Well, when you're working on that project next week, you're going to want that co-worker to stay with you. 00:12:51.860 --> 00:12:56.279 And by helping a co-worker this week, you know they'll be more likely to help you next week. 00:12:57.700 --> 00:13:01.120 With egoism, why do you help your neighbor move some heavy furniture? 00:14:10.060 --> 00:14:14.240 With this thought in mind, I want us to look back at this psalm. 00:14:14.860 --> 00:14:16.379 I want us to see verse 11. 00:14:16.379 --> 00:14:21.240 And there the psalmist declares in verse 11, 00:14:21.720 --> 00:14:25.240 Pardon my guilt, for it is great. 00:14:27.620 --> 00:14:28.539 Pardon my guilt. 00:14:28.759 --> 00:14:30.659 He seeks forgiveness, for it is great. 00:14:32.019 --> 00:14:35.860 As we look and see what comes immediately before it, 00:14:36.240 --> 00:14:38.580 I want to point you to verse 8. 00:14:39.419 --> 00:14:43.139 And we see there that the psalmist acknowledges the great character of God. 00:14:43.539 --> 00:14:43.759 He said, 00:14:43.759 --> 00:14:51.720 And then the psalmist goes on into verse 9. 00:14:52.620 --> 00:14:54.899 And begins to talk about being humble. 00:14:55.620 --> 00:14:57.659 He leads the humble in what is right. 00:14:57.659 --> 00:15:00.799 He teaches the humble his way. 00:15:00.799 --> 00:15:08.979 As we think of this idea of God working upon the humble. 00:15:09.659 --> 00:15:12.459 If there was anything I might put as the opposite of egoism, 00:15:12.959 --> 00:15:14.259 it would be humility. 00:15:14.259 --> 00:15:18.039 And indeed, that is to what God calls us, is humility. 00:15:19.100 --> 00:15:23.899 So what does it come when we are humble and we seek the forgiveness of sins?
