But I don't know if perhaps some mornings you wake up and you're a little bit groggy. 00:00:18.320 --> 00:00:22.519 Maybe this is a common occurrence for you, like it is for people like myself. 00:00:23.059 --> 00:00:25.780 Perhaps some of you, this is a rare occurrence. 00:00:25.780 --> 00:00:33.520 But you wake up groggy, and it's dark, and you don't quite manage to open your eyes before you stumble into the bathroom. 00:00:34.160 --> 00:00:37.100 And then you do the most foolish thing you could possibly do. 00:00:37.579 --> 00:00:47.299 You pull on the light cord, and suddenly you are utterly astounded by what happens next. 00:00:47.840 --> 00:00:54.920 The light comes on, and it is the most disorienting thing that you can possibly imagine. 00:00:54.920 --> 00:01:03.300 And this has happened to me far too many times for me to say, and perhaps that just shows you what sort of character I am. 00:01:04.040 --> 00:01:09.420 But as we're in Psalm 22, it's a psalm of two very different halves. 00:01:09.939 --> 00:01:14.540 And we've been in an incredibly dark place for the last couple of weeks. 00:01:14.540 --> 00:01:22.860 The psalmist has written about forsakenness, about mockery, about being completely surrounded by enemies, 00:01:23.500 --> 00:01:26.520 about being weak and at the very door of death. 00:01:27.200 --> 00:01:32.740 And as we step into this second half, we could almost become very disoriented. 00:01:33.520 --> 00:01:37.480 Because there is a massive change, an astounding change. 00:01:37.480 --> 00:01:41.359 You see, David has been saved from his distress. 00:01:41.880 --> 00:01:44.219 It happens there at the end of verse 21. 00:01:44.840 --> 00:01:48.460 You've rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen. 00:01:49.159 --> 00:01:55.500 David has been saved from his distress, and now there's a rousing anthem of praise and celebration. 00:01:55.500 --> 00:02:07.120 From the intense darkness of verses 1 through 21, we come into the incredible light of verses 22 to 31. 00:02:08.020 --> 00:02:11.960 Like the first half of the psalm, this half falls into two sections. 00:02:12.560 --> 00:02:15.960 This week we're dealing with verses 22 through 26. 00:02:16.560 --> 00:02:19.460 And next week we'll deal with the remainder of the psalm. 00:02:19.460 --> 00:02:28.360 So just as we begin, let's pray, then let's read what this psalm has to say to us, and then we'll see. 00:02:28.819 --> 00:02:31.719 So let's pray as we come together this morning. 00:02:35.400 --> 00:02:38.840 Father, you are the God of our salvation. 00:02:38.840 --> 00:02:52.400 You are the one who has saved us from all of the distress, all of the affliction that we righteously deserve for our sin. 00:02:53.960 --> 00:02:57.379 And yet this morning we still live in this sin-stained world. 00:02:58.060 --> 00:03:04.000 We still struggle with hard news and with sadness and with grief. 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:09.219 And so, Father, as we read your word, would you minister to us? 00:03:09.919 --> 00:03:12.259 Would you bind up our broken hearts? 00:03:13.080 --> 00:03:16.819 And would you release from us a song of praise? 00:03:17.840 --> 00:03:26.979 Because we see your incredible nature, your wonderful work, and who you really are. 00:03:26.979 --> 00:03:30.739 Father, help us to see your Son this morning. 00:03:31.299 --> 00:03:34.000 And by your Spirit, open our hearts, we pray. 00:03:34.159 --> 00:03:36.239 In Jesus' name. his tongue is free to proclaim the goodness of God. 00:05:43.900 --> 00:05:49.980 And he isn't content just to sing or to cry aloud himself. 00:05:49.980 --> 00:05:55.580 He incites all around him to desperation. 00:06:15.220 --> 00:06:17.759 And I'm sure many of you are like me in that regard. 00:06:17.759 --> 00:06:22.659 We will readily pray when we have no other recourse. 00:06:22.939 --> 00:06:26.199 When something cannot be solved any other way, 00:06:26.360 --> 00:06:27.779 we'll turn to God. 00:06:29.019 --> 00:06:34.039 But how often do we take time to praise God when he answers us? 00:06:36.180 --> 00:06:39.599 So often we cry out to God in our distress, 00:06:40.259 --> 00:06:44.599 but we forget to praise him when he comes through for us. 00:06:44.600 --> 00:06:50.560 We're creatures with short memories for God's mercies. 00:06:50.820 --> 00:06:55.780 And we need to be often reminded of all that he has done for us. 00:06:56.740 --> 00:07:00.340 A phrase that has Jesus has done for us 00:07:18.540 --> 00:07:22.040 and to praise God for his salvation that he has given us. 00:07:22.899 --> 00:07:26.439 That's why some Christians advocate keeping a prayer journal. 00:07:26.899 --> 00:07:30.500 It's a thing that I am hopeless at keeping up with. 00:07:30.959 --> 00:07:33.439 But it's a record of all your prayers. 00:07:33.439 --> 00:07:36.920 And then when God answers, you make a note of it. 00:07:37.560 --> 00:07:42.120 So that you have these little books filled with God's answers 00:07:42.120 --> 00:07:45.680 that you can praise him for at a opportunity. 00:08:18.139 --> 00:08:21.259 It leaves me no opportunity to tell others 00:08:21.259 --> 00:08:23.639 the great ways that God has worked in my life. 00:08:23.639 --> 00:08:29.959 Because encouraging other people to praise only works 00:08:29.959 --> 00:08:33.480 if I am in real relationships with you, 00:08:33.860 --> 00:08:35.779 my brothers and sisters in Christ. 00:08:37.179 --> 00:08:40.879 So much so that when the trial comes my way 00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:43.080 and when God steps in, 00:08:43.460 --> 00:08:46.340 then I can encourage you to praise God. 00:08:47.059 --> 00:08:49.200 And when the trials come to you 00:08:49.200 --> 00:08:53.080 and when God steps miraculously into your situations, 00:08:53.080 --> 00:08:55.759 then I will be overjoyed 00:08:55.759 --> --> 00:09:42.040 what has happened through this psalm already. 00:09:42.880 --> 00:09:44.780 Remember back to verse 1. 00:09:44.779 --> 00:09:47.819 To these heart-wrenching words. 00:09:48.259 --> 00:09:49.839 My God, my God, 00:09:50.039 --> 00:09:52.879 why have you forsaken me? 00:09:53.959 --> 00:09:57.439 Remember that terrible cry of verse 2. 00:09:58.439 --> 00:10:02.799 O God, I cry day by day, 00:10:02.980 --> 00:10:05.740 but you will not answer. 00:10:06.939 --> 00:10:09.939 But now the forsakenness of those first verses 00:10:09.939 --> 00:10:12.759 are replaced with something so very different. 00:10:12.759 --> 00:10:16.879 God has drawn near. 00:10:17.759 --> 00:10:19.639 See what's said in verse 24. 00:10:20.360 --> 00:10:21.860 God has not turned away. 00:10:22.860 --> 00:10:24.559 He hasn't turned tail 00:10:24.559 --> 00:10:27.960 to flee the horrors of this evil world. 00:10:29.539 --> 00:10:30.879 God has heard. 00:10:33.000 --> 00:10:34.559 God has shown up. 00:10:35.360 --> 00:10:36.559 And He's saved. 00:10:36.559 --> 00:10:42.479 And there's been a progression going through this psalm. 00:10:43.659 --> 00:10:47.019 In verse 1, God begins as a distant deity. 00:10:48.359 --> 00:10:50.879 But here He is now identified 00:10:50.879 --> 00:10:54.299 as the present Yahweh. 00:10:54.299 --> 00:10:58.240 It's like you're looking at a person 00:10:58.240 --> 00:11:00.399 coming from a far distance. 00:11:01.639 --> 00:11:02.899 And to begin with, 00:11:02.979 --> 00:11:04.740 you can't really see who it is. 00:11:05.179 --> 00:11:07.799 You can't really recognize who they are. 00:11:08.500 --> 00:11:10.079 But as they come closer, 00:11:10.899 --> 00:11:14.399 very quickly you recognize the friendly face. 00:11:15.179 --> 00:11:17.779 Very quickly you see who it is. 00:11:17.779 --> 00:11:22.139 The first people in this psalm 00:11:22.139 --> 00:11:23.959 to mention God by name 00:11:23.959 --> 00:11:25.319 were the mockers. 00:11:27.039 --> 00:11:28.039 Isn't that odd? 00:11:29.279 --> 00:11:31.000 It turns out that these mockers 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:33.319 weren't unthinking or unknowing people. 00:11:34.059 --> 00:11:35.860 They had their theology right. 00:11:37.000 --> 00:11:40.740 But they considered the psalmist's real trust in God 00:11:40.740 --> 00:11:42.379 to be a foolish thing. 00:11:42.379 --> 00:11:45.120 They knew about God, 00:11:45.220 --> 00:11:47.539 but they weren't trusting in Him. 00:11:49.019 --> 00:11:50.519 And they're shown to be fools 00:11:50.519 --> 00:11:53.379 when their jeers and their mockery 00:11:53.379 --> 00:11:55.019 turns on their heads. 00:11:56.059 --> 00:11:57.659 See, because by verse 19, 00:11:58.080 --> 00:12:00.580 David calls out to this God of ours, Yahweh. 00:12:01.379 --> 00:12:02.899 And here in verse 23, 00:12:03.580 --> 00:12:06.399 we now see that it is Yahweh who has rescued. 00:12:07.759 --> 00:12:09.340 It probably reads in your Bible, 00:12:09.480 --> 00:12:11.039 the Lord in small capitals. 00:12:11.039 --> 00:12:15.179 That's how many Bibles translate the name of God. 00:12:15.659 --> 00:12:18.379 But given how our text began this morning, 00:12:18.599 --> 00:12:21.159 we need to make so much of this name of God. 00:12:22.019 --> 00:12:25.159 You see, this is not one of the fickle gods 00:12:25.159 --> 00:12:26.719 of the Greek pantheon. 00:12:27.639 --> 00:12:31.480 This isn't the deist cosmic creator 00:12:31.480 --> 00:12:34.899 who has walked away to leave us to our own devices. 00:12:35.779 --> 00:12:38.500 This isn't Allah who will leave you to fate 00:12:38.500 --> 00:12:42.200 or Brahma who requires karma of you 00:12:42.200 --> 00:12:45.299 or any of the other false gods of this world. 00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:49.559 This God is identified as Yahweh, 00:12:49.700 --> 00:12:51.799 the one true God. 00:12:52.759 --> 00:12:55.620 He is a covenant-keeping God. 00:12:56.620 --> 00:12:57.840 He's true to His Word. 00:12:59.399 --> 00:13:02.159 He's a merciful and a gracious God. 00:13:02.159 --> 00:13:04.519 He cares for us, 00:13:04.659 --> 00:13:07.219 for people beyond what we deserve. 00:13:08.299 --> 00:13:09.799 He's a holy God. 00:13:10.039 --> 00:13:12.120 He's pure and without fault. 00:13:12.639 --> 00:13:13.719 He's a loving God, 00:13:13.860 --> 00:13:17.740 caring for us more than we can even dare to hope. 00:13:18.860 --> 00:13:21.559 And this is the God who is worthy of our worship. 00:13:21.559 --> 00:13:28.759 Don't think that we come to a vague shadowy figure 00:13:28.759 --> --> 00:13:51.240 And I wonder, 00:13:51.399 --> 00:13:54.879 have you come to know and to trust this God? 00:13:57.659 --> 00:14:01.279 Perhaps you need some proof of all that I've just said about terrible separation 00:14:41.960 --> 00:14:46.280 of all our wrongdoing and our wrong thinking that we deserved. 00:14:47.320 --> 00:14:49.480 Because of our need to be saved, 00:14:49.960 --> 00:14:52.840 Jesus took on Himself all of our sin. 00:14:53.420 --> 00:14:57.519 And God gave to Him all of the punishment that we deserved. 00:14:58.960 --> 00:15:01.240 Because of our helplessness, 00:15:02.060 --> 00:15:05.660 Jesus stepped uninvited into this world. 00:15:05.659 --> 00:15:11.120 And He worked out this incredible salvation plan. 00:15:12.799 --> 00:15:16.299 And all that we have to do is to trust in Him. 00:15:18.519 --> 00:15:21.039 And now we can join in this celebration. 00:15:22.559 --> 00:15:26.919 Because Jesus has gone through that incredible pain in our place. 00:15:40.579 we see proved reliable in Jesus. 00:15:42.860 --> 00:15:46.879 And we have seen this incredible celebration 00:15:46.879 --> 00:15:48.339 after this salvation. 00:15:48.340 --> 00:15:53.759 Let's see again what David has to say 00:15:53.759 --> 00:15:56.200 about the reason for the celebration. 00:15:57.879 --> 00:16:01.660 Look with me at verse 24 again. 00:16:03.620 -->
