And if you don't know who the Pharisees were, they were a religious group 00:00:14.419 --> 00:00:20.559 ! of Jews in Jesus' day. They were concerned with being personally devoted to God and 00:00:20.559 --> 00:00:26.859 with meticulously following the law of God. But they were off on some things. They had many 00:00:26.859 --> 00:00:32.060 of their own laws and traditions that they had collected over time. They had all kinds of rituals 00:00:32.060 --> 00:00:37.039 and ceremonial purity things that they practiced. And they kind of got to this place where they saw 00:00:37.039 --> 00:00:45.000 themselves as the authority on true religion amongst the Jews. And of course, as we've seen 00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:52.420 through the Gospel of Luke, there's been conflict between Jesus and the Pharisees. The Pharisees have 00:00:52.420 --> 00:00:59.640 been going after Jesus about all kinds of things. They're firmly opposed to Him. And Jesus has been 00:00:59.640 --> 00:01:08.060 rebuking the Pharisees for their hypocrisy and their greed and for leading people astray. 00:01:09.140 --> 00:01:15.520 Well, this morning we get to see another very brief encounter with the Pharisees. And it brings out 00:01:15.519 --> 00:01:22.140 some things about Jesus that are precious. So let's look at it here in Luke chapter 13. 00:01:24.579 --> 00:01:27.319 And we're starting in verse 31. 00:01:29.319 --> 00:01:33.239 At that time, some Pharisees came to Jesus and said to Him, 00:01:33.739 --> 00:01:36.239 Leave this place and go somewhere else. 00:01:37.340 --> 00:01:38.579 Herod wants to kill you. 00:01:38.579 --> 00:01:41.579 Jesus replied, 00:01:41.579 --> 00:01:44.219 Go tell that fox, 00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:50.679 I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow. 00:01:51.239 --> 00:01:54.459 And on the third day, I will reach my goal. 00:01:56.039 --> 00:02:01.299 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day. 00:02:02.099 --> 00:02:03.219 For surely, 00:02:04.079 --> 00:02:05.560 no prophet can die 00:02:05.560 --> 00:02:07.359 outside Jerusalem. 00:02:08.580 --> 00:02:15.940 We heard last week that Jesus is right now on His way to the city of Jerusalem. 00:02:16.440 --> 00:02:19.300 And He's not traveling in the most direct way, 00:02:19.439 --> 00:02:23.900 but He's kind of meandering through all the villages and towns on His way there. 00:02:25.860 --> 00:02:30.480 And we listened last week to Jesus answer that question of how many will be saved. 00:02:32.220 --> 00:02:35.560 He talked about the door of salvation being very narrow. 00:02:35.560 --> 00:02:42.420 He encouraged the people to make every effort to enter through that door. 00:02:43.420 --> 00:02:49.300 And He spoke about how many would find themselves cast out of the kingdom of God at the end. 00:02:49.300 --> 00:02:53.180 Well, at that time, 00:02:53.540 --> 00:02:56.719 same moment or conversation, 00:02:57.100 --> 00:02:57.780 Luke tells us, 00:02:57.840 --> 00:02:59.880 some Pharisees come to Jesus 00:02:59.880 --> 00:03:02.800 and they say this to Him. 00:03:03.960 --> 00:03:05.200 Leave this place. 00:03:07.060 --> 00:03:08.420 Go somewhere else. 00:03:08.419 --> 00:03:11.579 Herod wants to kill you. 00:03:14.639 --> 00:03:15.919 It's no surprise, of course, 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:18.959 that the Pharisees want Jesus to get out of town 00:03:18.959 --> 00:03:21.179 because they hate Him. 00:03:21.939 --> 00:03:24.319 And the Pharisees will play a big part 00:03:24.319 --> 00:03:26.639 in Jesus' death 00:03:26.639 --> 00:03:27.659 in the days ahead. 00:03:27.659 --> 00:03:31.159 But let's not miss the significance of this moment. 00:03:32.379 --> 00:03:33.740 God has sent Jesus 00:03:33.740 --> 00:03:35.520 to speak to the people. 00:03:37.180 --> 00:03:38.639 And as we heard last Sunday, 00:03:38.759 --> 00:03:40.680 Jesus has come to teach in their streets 00:03:40.680 --> 00:03:43.199 and to call the people to repent 00:03:43.199 --> 00:03:45.500 so that they can enter into 00:03:45.500 --> 00:03:47.379 the kingdom of God and be saved. 00:03:49.460 --> 00:03:51.680 And what's the response of the Pharisees 00:03:51.680 --> 00:03:52.359 to Jesus? 00:03:55.159 --> 00:03:56.099 Get out of here. 00:03:56.099 --> 00:03:56.099 00:03:57.659 --> 00:03:59.479 We don't want to see you anymore. 00:04:00.439 --> 00:04:01.780 We don't want you here. 00:04:02.699 --> 00:04:03.680 Go somewhere else. 00:04:05.479 --> 00:04:06.900 They reject Jesus. 00:04:08.900 --> 00:04:11.240 They reject God's messenger. 00:04:14.060 --> 00:04:16.639 And the Pharisees sort of add in this little detail. 00:04:16.779 --> 00:04:18.379 They say, Herod wants to kill you. 00:04:19.500 --> 00:04:21.680 Herod was the ruler of the region of Galilee 00:04:21.680 --> 00:04:23.500 up in the north of Israel. 00:04:23.500 --> 00:04:29.660 Jesus did a lot of ministry in Galilee. 00:04:31.180 --> 00:04:36.240 And as we hear sort of this little piece of information 00:04:36.240 --> 00:04:37.259 from the Pharisees, 00:04:37.379 --> 00:04:39.060 it gets us wondering and thinking, 00:04:39.459 --> 00:04:39.720 you know, 00:04:39.779 --> 00:04:41.699 did Herod really want to kill Jesus? 00:04:42.579 --> 00:04:43.819 Not too long from now, 00:04:43.879 --> 00:04:45.660 he's going to hope to see Jesus 00:04:45.660 --> 00:04:46.980 so that he'll do a miracle. 00:04:46.980 --> 00:04:50.140 Or is he just sort of telling the Pharisees 00:04:50.140 --> 00:04:51.500 to say this to Jesus, 00:04:51.660 --> 00:04:55.460 hoping that Jesus will just stay out of his area? 00:04:56.100 --> 00:04:58.259 Or are the Pharisees just making this up 00:04:58.259 --> 00:05:01.080 because they just want Jesus to get away from them? 00:05:02.860 --> 00:05:05.180 And if Herod did want to kill Jesus, 00:05:05.600 --> 00:05:06.680 what's the reason? 00:05:06.680 --> 00:05:09.980 Is it just because of the tension 00:05:09.980 --> 00:05:12.500 that's happening between Jesus 00:05:12.500 --> 00:05:14.100 and the leaders of the Jews? 00:05:15.220 --> 00:05:17.939 Well, there's no clear answer to these questions, 00:05:18.259 --> 00:05:20.519 but we do get Jesus' reply. 00:05:22.579 --> 00:05:23.259 Jesus says, 00:05:23.819 --> 00:05:25.100 Go tell that fox, 00:05:25.980 --> 00:05:27.759 I will keep on driving out demons 00:05:27.759 --> 00:05:30.800 and healing people today and tomorrow, 00:05:31.160 --> 00:05:32.439 and on the third day, 00:05:33.000 --> 00:05:34.079 I will reach my goal. 00:05:34.079 --> 00:05:38.199 Now, I don't know about you, 00:05:38.300 --> 00:05:40.199 what the first thing that pops out to you 00:05:40.199 --> 00:05:41.579 in that statement is, 00:05:41.740 --> 00:05:42.419 but for me, 00:05:42.500 --> 00:05:43.539 it's that word fox. 00:05:44.579 --> 00:05:46.560 And it's kind of a chuckle 00:05:46.560 --> 00:05:48.979 that Jesus calls Herod a fox, 00:05:49.300 --> 00:05:51.759 but we should use discernment here too. 00:05:52.979 --> 00:05:55.680 Jesus is not just doing that sort of, 00:05:55.680 --> 00:05:55.939 you know, 00:05:56.039 --> 00:05:57.139 sinful name calling 00:05:57.139 --> 00:05:59.500 that we sometimes have done, 00:06:00.319 --> 00:06:02.180 and neither is he insulting Herod. 00:06:02.180 --> 00:06:04.420 He's not trying to dehumanize him. 00:06:05.860 --> 00:06:07.600 And this isn't the only time 00:06:07.600 --> 00:06:10.360 that Jesus will call someone 00:06:10.360 --> 00:06:12.600 sort of an animal name. 00:06:12.740 --> 00:06:14.800 He will later call the Pharisees 00:06:14.800 --> 00:06:15.840 a brood of vipers. 00:06:16.560 --> 00:06:19.399 And there's truth in the metaphor 00:06:19.399 --> 00:06:21.399 that Jesus chooses. 00:06:22.660 --> 00:06:24.399 Now, there's some debate 00:06:24.399 --> 00:06:25.579 over what is that truth. 00:06:26.160 --> 00:06:28.879 When we refer to someone as a fox today, 00:06:28.879 --> 00:06:31.040 we often are talking about somebody 00:06:31.040 --> 00:06:34.519 being clever or sly or sneaky, 00:06:34.839 --> 00:06:36.459 but usually in a bad way. 00:06:37.439 --> 00:06:38.639 Back in Jesus' day, 00:06:38.719 --> 00:06:39.839 to call someone a fox 00:06:39.839 --> 00:06:41.879 could either have meant deceptive 00:06:41.879 --> 00:06:43.659 or destructive 00:06:43.659 --> 00:06:46.500 or pathetic. 00:06:47.300 --> 00:06:48.980 Kind of like a nipping fox 00:06:48.980 --> 00:06:50.740 rather than a fierce 00:06:50.740 --> 00:06:52.939 and majestic lion of a ruler. 00:06:52.939 --> 00:06:55.219 Now, of course, 00:06:55.579 --> 00:06:57.660 the commentators will go back and forth 00:06:57.660 --> 00:06:59.079 over which one Jesus meant. 00:06:59.740 --> 00:07:00.860 Whatever the case, 00:07:01.579 --> 00:07:02.939 Jesus is highlighting 00:07:02.939 --> 00:07:05.220 something true and real about Herod. 00:07:05.920 --> 00:07:07.439 He was a wicked man. 00:07:08.240 --> 00:07:09.279 He was corrupt. 00:07:10.639 --> 00:07:11.759 He was ungodly. 00:07:12.220 --> 00:07:14.079 He wasn't particularly powerful 00:07:14.079 --> 00:07:14.920 or majestic. 00:07:15.740 --> 00:07:17.699 He was only a tetrarch 00:07:17.699 --> 00:07:19.959 under the rule of the Roman Empire. 00:07:19.959 --> 00:07:22.479 But probably the thing 00:07:22.479 --> 00:07:24.560 that comes to mind most 00:07:24.560 --> 00:07:26.399 that relates to this, 00:07:26.699 --> 00:07:29.039 we remember the evil thing 00:07:29.039 --> 00:07:29.799 that Herod did 00:07:29.799 --> 00:07:31.519 when he beheaded 00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:33.240 John the baptizer. 00:07:35.240 --> 00:07:37.039 That was both Jesus' relative 00:07:37.039 --> 00:07:39.560 and a prophet that God had sent. 00:07:41.060 --> 00:07:41.459 And so, 00:07:41.979 --> 00:07:44.279 the Pharisees are poisonous vipers 00:07:44.279 --> 00:07:45.959 and Herod truly was a fox. 00:07:46.399 --> 00:07:47.779 He had already made a kill. 00:07:47.779 --> 00:07:52.259 And Jesus has a message 00:07:52.259 --> 00:07:53.799 for the Pharisees 00:07:53.799 --> 00:07:55.639 to give back to Herod. 00:07:57.279 --> 00:07:58.159 He says, 00:07:58.319 --> 00:07:58.479 go, 00:07:59.199 --> 00:08:00.779 tell that fox, 00:08:01.779 --> 00:08:05.179 I will keep on driving out demons 00:08:05.179 --> 00:08:06.579 and healing people 00:08:06.579 --> 00:08:07.819 today and tomorrow. 00:08:08.679 --> 00:08:09.899 And on the third day, 00:08:10.259 --> 00:08:11.759 I will reach my goal. 00:08:13.239 --> 00:08:15.000 So Herod wants to kill me 00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:16.699 that I will keep on doing these things 00:08:39.779 --> 00:08:41.379 until I'm finished. 00:08:41.379 --> 00:08:45.439 Jesus kind of just dismisses 00:08:45.439 --> 00:08:46.460 Herod's threat. 00:08:47.879 --> 00:08:50.179 Maybe even reminds Herod a little bit 00:08:50.179 --> 00:08:51.620 that he's doing these things 00:08:51.620 --> 00:08:52.700 by a higher authority. 00:08:55.620 --> 00:08:57.200 But it's a reminder again 00:08:57.200 --> 00:08:58.899 that Jesus is being opposed. 00:08:59.059 --> 00:08:59.820 He's being hated 00:08:59.820 --> 00:09:01.059 for no good reason. 00:09:01.059 --> 00:09:05.459 Look at all the good 00:09:05.459 --> 00:09:06.719 that Jesus has been doing 00:09:06.719 --> 00:09:07.339 for people. 00:09:09.099 --> 00:09:10.619 Healings of all kinds. 00:09:12.519 --> 00:09:12.959 Illnesses, 00:09:13.119 --> 00:09:13.579 diseases, 00:09:13.859 --> 00:09:14.539 disabilities. 00:09:15.979 --> 00:09:17.299 People being set free 00:09:17.299 --> 00:09:18.439 from evil spirits 00:09:18.439 --> 00:09:20.459 and yet they want 00:09:20.459 --> 00:09:21.439 to be rid of Jesus. 00:09:21.440 --> 00:09:29.180 Jesus gives a sort of schedule here. 00:09:31.260 --> 00:09:32.640 The today, tomorrow, 00:09:32.800 --> 00:09:33.660 and on the third day 00:09:33.660 --> 00:09:34.820 or on the next day 00:09:34.820 --> 00:09:37.740 part of the verse. 00:09:38.100 --> 00:09:40.700 And most Bible students 00:09:40.700 --> 00:09:43.280 looking at this 00:09:43.280 --> 00:09:44.480 take this to be figurative 00:09:44.480 --> 00:09:45.600 rather than 00:09:59.139 that he's speaking figuratively 00:09:59.139 --> 00:10:00.659 like I will keep on doing 00:10:00.659 --> 00:10:01.960 what I've been doing 00:10:01.960 --> 00:10:03.340 for the time being 00:10:03.340 --> 00:10:05.519 for the next little while 00:10:05.519 --> 00:10:08.120 but it won't be too long 00:10:08.120 --> 00:10:10.060 before I am finally killed 00:10:10.060 --> 00:10:11.860 in
