00:05:07.199 --> 00:05:09.959 So, I'm going to set the scene by starting in verse 1. 00:05:10.759 --> 00:05:15.500 In those days, John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 00:05:15.740 --> 00:05:18.500 Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 00:05:18.939 --> 00:05:23.159 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, 00:05:23.539 --> 00:05:25.699 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, 00:05:25.920 --> 00:05:28.139 Prepare the way of the Lord. 00:05:28.319 --> 00:05:30.199 Make his paths straight. 00:05:30.199 --> 00:05:37.180 Now, John wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, 00:05:37.339 --> 00:05:40.459 and his food was locusts and wild honey. 00:05:40.599 --> 00:05:43.959 If you have young boys in the house like I do, this is one of their favorite characters in the Bible. 00:05:45.060 --> 00:05:51.099 Then, Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, 00:05:51.279 --> 00:05:52.079 to John the Baptist, 00:05:52.300 --> 00:05:54.699 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, 00:05:55.419 --> 00:05:56.379 confessing their sins. 00:05:56.379 --> 00:06:05.579 So, Matthew chapter 3, this is the point at which Jesus is going to go public with His ministry 00:06:05.579 --> 00:06:07.259 for the first time. 00:06:07.319 --> 00:06:12.719 And it starts with John the Baptist preparing the way of the Lord in two ways. 00:06:12.740 --> 00:06:15.779 By preaching a message of repentance, right? 00:06:15.860 --> 00:06:17.439 Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 00:06:18.019 --> 00:06:24.100 And then number two, by baptizing those who repent and confess their sins. 00:06:24.100 --> 00:06:27.439 Which means that even before the baptism of Jesus, 00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:36.160 John's ministry of baptism gives us some understanding of what the purpose of baptism is. 00:06:36.760 --> 00:06:40.040 That John is baptizing those who are believing a message of repentance, 00:06:40.439 --> 00:06:45.700 and their baptism is accompanied by a confession of their sins. 00:06:46.300 --> 00:06:48.020 So, even though Jesus hasn't been revealed yet, 00:06:48.019 --> 00:06:53.899 that in John's baptism, there is a call towards a heart posture that recognizes, 00:06:54.180 --> 00:06:58.099 I have done wrong in God's sight, and I am a sinner. 00:06:58.899 --> 00:06:59.139 Okay? 00:06:59.219 --> 00:07:00.620 So, that's there right away. 00:07:01.719 --> 00:07:07.180 But, John's baptism is not a sufficient baptism. 00:07:07.180 --> 00:07:13.980 Because John the Baptist is not a sufficient baptizer. 00:07:14.939 --> 00:07:16.120 And he's aware of that. 00:07:16.199 --> 00:07:18.959 If you look down at verse 11, John says, 00:07:19.340 --> 00:07:21.259 I baptize you with water for repentance, 00:07:21.780 --> 00:07:25.120 but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, 00:07:25.680 --> 00:07:27.439 whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. 00:07:28.160 --> 00:07:32.360 He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 00:07:32.360 --> 00:07:36.199 So, John the Baptist, he's an incredible man. 00:07:36.300 --> 00:07:37.340 He's a faithful man. 00:07:37.980 --> 00:07:40.120 Jesus himself, in Matthew 11, 11, 00:07:40.259 --> 00:07:45.720 he says that among women, there is no one greater who's been born than John the Baptist, 00:07:45.840 --> 00:07:49.860 which is quite a statement coming from the second person of the Trinity. 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:53.160 But John is there merely to point the way. 00:07:53.560 --> 00:07:56.080 He's there merely to point the way to Jesus. 00:07:56.080 --> 00:08:01.980 There is a baptizing of the soul that man is not capable of. 00:08:01.980 --> 00:08:07.540 There is a work of the heart that can only be done by the Holy Spirit. 00:08:07.680 --> 00:08:15.420 And only one man, the God-man, Jesus Christ, can baptize like that. 00:08:16.520 --> 00:08:19.240 And that becomes even clearer in the next verses. 00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:23.879 So, let's go to verses 13 through 17, still in chapter 3. 00:08:24.879 --> 00:08:30.520 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him. 00:08:30.519 --> 00:08:33.759 John would have prevented him, saying, 00:08:34.079 --> 00:08:37.480 I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? 00:08:38.879 --> 00:08:40.120 But Jesus answered him, 00:08:40.519 --> 00:08:45.960 Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. 00:08:47.039 --> 00:08:48.299 Then he consented. 00:08:48.419 --> 00:08:49.419 John the Baptist consented. 00:08:49.419 --> 00:08:54.439 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water. 00:08:54.659 --> 00:08:57.779 And behold, the heavens were opened to him. 00:08:58.740 --> 00:09:05.699 And he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him. 00:09:06.199 --> 00:09:08.379 And behold, a voice from heaven said, 00:09:08.579 --> 00:09:13.579 This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. 00:09:13.580 --> 00:09:23.900 Jesus Christ, in his baptism, he's anointed by the Holy Spirit with the joyful approval of the Heavenly Father. 00:09:24.080 --> 00:09:28.840 This is one of the coolest moments of the Trinity showing up in the New Testament. 00:09:28.840 --> 00:09:35.720 And just as we see the Trinity present in Christ's example for us in his baptism, 00:09:36.360 --> 00:09:42.540 so the Trinity is present in Christ's command to baptize at the end of Matthew, 00:09:42.600 --> 00:09:48.080 like we just read, where he calls us to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 00:09:48.180 --> 00:09:53.560 This is this awesome full circle moment from the start of Jesus' ministry to his last words to us 00:09:53.560 --> 00:09:55.360 before he goes up into the clouds. 00:09:55.360 --> 00:10:02.779 Now, if you know your Bible and your theology, you might have a question at this point, 00:10:03.139 --> 00:10:09.740 which is if our baptism is connected to this idea of repentance and turning away from sin, 00:10:09.840 --> 00:10:16.360 and Jesus had no sin, then why is he being baptized right now? 00:10:17.019 --> 00:10:19.960 Which, to be fair, is basically John the Baptist's reaction, right? 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:21.759 He's like, what is going on here? 00:10:21.840 --> 00:10:23.080 Like, you need to be baptizing me. 00:10:23.139 --> 00:10:24.460 I should not be baptizing you. 00:10:24.460 --> 00:10:25.080 What's happening? 00:10:26.360 --> 00:10:29.120 Douglas O'Donnell, he's really helpful here, he writes this. 00:10:30.019 --> 00:10:30.480 He says, 00:10:31.139 --> 00:10:38.700 Put plainly, Jesus was baptized not for his sake, but ours. 00:10:39.440 --> 00:10:46.580 When we go down into the waters of baptism, it is a symbol of the cleansing of our sins. 00:10:47.120 --> 00:10:50.840 As the water pours over our heads, we are made clean in the sight of God. 00:10:50.840 --> 00:10:57.780 When Jesus went down into the water of the Jordan River, the opposite happened. 00:10:57.780 --> 00:11:02.680 He began to take on our sin, our dirt, all the scum of the baptized. 00:11:02.679 --> 00:11:11.599 Whatever drop of water might have entered into his mouth was his first taste of the cup of God's wrath, 00:11:11.599 --> 00:11:15.799 which he would drink in full measure on the cross. 00:11:15.799 --> 00:11:26.859 Jesus, the son of God's plan of sin substitution. 00:11:26.860 --> 00:11:35.800 So, before Jesus goes into the waters, he does not confess any sin because he does not have any sin to confess. 00:11:36.300 --> 00:11:41.879 He does not repent because there is nothing for him to repent of. 00:11:41.879 --> 00:11:48.720 By being baptized, Jesus is beginning the work of fulfilling God's beautiful story. 00:11:49.460 --> 00:11:53.419 He's showing us where all this is headed right from the beginning of his ministry. 00:11:53.419 --> 00:12:05.279 And where that is headed is towards him dying, taking our sin upon himself, and then being raised again to a newness of life so that we might be washed clean. 00:12:05.360 --> 00:12:10.679 It's a story headed towards his death and his resurrection. 00:12:12.679 --> 00:12:20.219 So, if that's what's happening in Jesus' baptism, what's happening in our baptism? 00:14:41.759 --> 00:14:48.319 It's where a church affirms and proclaims a believer's union to Christ. 00:14:48.699 --> 00:14:51.319 So, I mentioned the church in that definition, right? 00:14:52.039 --> 00:14:58.699 If you go out to Lake Michigan today and you say, you go into the water and you say, 00:14:59.559 --> 00:15:04.079 I baptize myself in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 00:15:04.079 --> 00:15:08.720 and you drop under the water and then you come back up, that was not a baptism. 00:15:08.720 --> 00:15:15.139 Because a baptism always involves a believer and a church. 00:15:16.399 --> 00:15:21.279 Jesus' words to us in the Great Commission are really important for understanding this. 00:15:21.340 --> 00:15:22.820 So, we've already spent some time in Matthew. 00:15:23.180 --> 00:15:30.200 Let's go back to where we started in Matthew, Matthew 28, at the end of the Gospel of Matthew. 00:15:30.200 --> 00:15:33.379 Matthew 28, the Great Commission, Jesus says this, 00:15:33.379 --> 00:15:44.820 All authority, that's an important word, all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 00:15:45.879 --> 00:15:50.159 Go, therefore, make disciples and baptize them. 00:15:50.159 --> 00:15:55.480 So, Jesus, who has all the authority in heaven and on earth, he tells the apostles, 00:15:56.000 --> 00:16:01.179 that's who he's talking to in this verse, he tells them to go and to baptize. 00:16:01.240 --> 00:16:04.639 So, it's this kind of extension of his authority. 00:16:04.860 --> 00:16:13.719 He basically installs them as judges with the authority to recognize who is a disciple of Jesus Christ. 00:16:13.720 --> 00:16:17.920 They are authorized by Jesus to baptize. 00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:25.000 But, here's the plot twist for us today, is that all of the apostles died nearly 2,000 years ago. 00:16:25.899 --> 00:16:30.080 So, who has the authority to do baptisms now?
