stop and you see the surprise of it. 00:00:49.519 --> 00:00:52.060 So in Luke's Gospel, it's also familiar, isn't it? 00:00:52.420 --> 00:00:55.659 At Christmas time with the nativity scene, you have the shepherds. 00:00:55.659 --> 00:00:58.479 But it is surprising, isn't it? 00:00:59.019 --> 00:01:03.279 That the lowly, uneducated, poor, irreligious shepherds, 00:01:03.479 --> 00:01:10.899 they are the ones that are chosen to be the kind of first tellers of God made man, the incarnation. 00:01:12.259 --> 00:01:13.400 It's surprising, isn't it? 00:01:14.079 --> 00:01:21.319 At the beginning of Jesus' mind, he isn't worshipped by the scripture-saturated, church-flowing scribes. 00:01:21.319 --> 00:01:23.819 The people who know their Bible. 00:01:24.739 --> 00:01:27.000 Or any of the Who came from hundreds of miles to see him. 00:01:38.259 --> 00:01:39.759 Both of those things are surprising. 00:01:39.919 --> 00:01:41.000 They're not what you'd expect. 00:01:42.259 --> this man in charge of a hundred soldiers. 00:02:06.679 --> 00:02:08.900 And I want to show you what is so thrilling about it. 00:02:09.139 --> 00:02:10.759 If you can look at verse 9. 00:02:11.180 --> 00:02:12.519 First line is the little letters. 00:02:12.900 --> 00:02:15.459 The chapters are the big numbers. 00:02:15.460 --> 00:02:20.980 So verse 9, when Jesus heard these things, on page 863, he marveled at him. 00:02:22.260 --> 00:02:23.659 He marveled at him. 00:02:24.500 --> 00:02:25.640 He was amazed. 00:02:27.300 --> 00:02:29.659 To put it another way, Jesus was taken aback. 00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:33.120 Jesus was filled with astonishment. 00:02:33.260 --> 00:02:34.060 Jesus was shocked. 00:02:35.260 --> 00:02:37.120 Or even quite simply, Jesus was surprised. 00:02:37.240 --> that? 00:02:45.620 --> 00:02:46.880 What surprises Jesus? 00:02:47.280 --> 00:02:51.320 It's one of the only places in the Gospels where Jesus is taken aback. 00:02:51.380 --> 00:02:53.219 Where he is surprised by what happens. 00:02:53.939 --> 00:02:55.180 And the answer is faith. 00:02:56.460 --> 00:02:59.700 Faith like this faith surprises him. 00:03:00.580 --> 00:03:01.960 But in verse 9 again. 00:03:19.620 What is so surprising to Jesus about this man's faith? 00:03:20.840 --> 00:03:22.199 Well, there's a few things that could be surprising. 00:03:22.479 --> 00:03:24.319 First of all, was it that he was a Roman soldier? 00:03:25.599 --> 00:03:26.840 To put it differently. 00:03:27.699 --> 00:03:29.219 This man is a Gentile. 00:03:29.319 --> 00:03:30.659 He's somebody who's not a Jew. 00:03:31.859 --> 00:03:34.680 And worse than that, from a Jewish perspective, he's a Roman. 00:03:34.680 --> 00:03:41.460 Much worse, from a Jewish zealous perspective, he's a Roman centurion. 00:03:42.260 --> 00:03:44.560 He symbolises all of Rome's authority. 00:03:46.319 --> 00:03:48.520 He has a hundred soldiers in his charge. 00:03:48.520 --> 00:03:52.560 And this man in the ancient world is a powerful man. 00:03:53.480 --> 00:03:56.380 He's wearing the wrong uniform for the Jews. 00:03:56.520 --> 00:03:59.640 He's on the wrong eye of the religious schemeer. 00:04:00.640 --> 00:04:03.100 He was a Roman enemy officer. 00:04:03.099 --> 00:04:06.099 And is that what surprises Jesus? 00:04:06.239 --> 00:04:07.739 That a man like this has faith? 00:04:09.259 --> 00:04:10.240 Well, perhaps. 00:04:10.460 --> 00:04:12.240 But actually, I'm not sure about that. 00:04:13.079 --> 00:04:16.199 I'm not sure Jesus was surprised that this Gentile had faith. 00:04:16.500 --> 00:04:21.600 He'd already encountered Gentiles, non-Jews, who'd believed in him. 00:04:22.379 --> 00:04:24.279 So he mentioned to me the Magi. 00:04:24.819 --> 00:04:29.379 Those wizards that had come from hundreds of miles away to worship him. 00:04:29.379 --> 00:04:32.120 Surely somebody would have told him that story when he was a boy. 00:04:33.500 --> 00:04:34.219 I said, perhaps. 00:04:34.339 --> 00:04:39.000 Because it wouldn't have surprised him that Gentiles, people who were non-Jews, had come to faith. 00:04:39.300 --> 00:04:43.680 Because in his Bible, in the Old Testament, it's spoken about that all the time. 00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:49.079 Hosea said, those who are not my people, I will call my people. 00:04:49.959 --> 00:04:52.500 Those who are not my beloved, I will call beloved. 00:04:53.019 --> 00:04:54.920 Isaiah, of course, he had his voice. 00:04:54.920 --> 00:05:00.120 God spoke through Isaiah and said that Gentiles would bind themselves to the Lord. 00:05:00.199 --> 00:05:01.920 And they would serve him and they would love him. 00:05:02.600 --> 00:05:04.240 They would love the name of the Lord. 00:05:05.300 --> 00:05:11.060 Isaiah spoke that God's house would be a house of prayer for all the nations. 00:05:12.720 --> 00:05:13.720 Do you remember Simeon? 00:05:14.460 --> 00:05:16.200 When Jesus was a little boy at the temple. 00:05:16.560 --> 00:05:20.600 He said, now let your servant depart in peace according to your word. 00:05:20.819 --> 00:05:23.259 For my eyes have seen your salvation. 00:05:23.259 --> 00:05:26.279 My eyes have seen your salvation. 00:05:26.459 --> 00:05:29.599 You've prepared in the sight of all the peoples. 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:34.319 A light of revelation to the Gentiles. 00:05:35.399 --> 00:05:36.560 And glory to your people Israel. 00:05:37.620 --> 00:05:43.639 In Jesus, non-Jews like you and me would find their salvation, their rescue. 00:05:43.719 --> 00:05:44.699 And I think Jesus knew that. 00:05:44.699 --> 00:05:50.139 So I don't think he was any more surprised that this centurion has come to faith. 00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:53.680 Than the centurion we found in Acts chapter 10, certainly. 00:05:54.920 --> 00:05:59.759 Because the Holy Spirit was opening the eyes of the Gentiles. 00:05:59.899 --> 00:06:01.560 Even mighty military men. 00:06:02.779 --> 00:06:03.980 Okay then, what surprised Jesus? 00:06:03.980 --> 00:06:12.939 Was it that this Roman soldier worked with the Jews to ask for Jesus for help? 00:06:14.319 --> 00:06:15.220 Or perhaps? 00:06:15.900 --> 00:06:16.520 Possibly isn't it? 00:06:16.560 --> 00:06:17.319 It's surprising to me. 00:06:17.360 --> 00:06:18.939 At least when I read verses 3 to 5. 00:06:19.340 --> 00:06:21.720 The centurion adhered with Jesus. 00:06:21.960 --> 00:06:25.100 And so he sent some of the elders of the Jews to him. 00:06:25.439 --> 00:06:27.280 To ask Jesus to come and help his servants. 00:06:27.279 --> 00:06:31.259 And when they come to Jesus, they plead earnestly with him. 00:06:31.500 --> 00:06:36.239 They say, this man, this centurion, deserves you to have you do this. 00:06:37.000 --> 00:06:39.139 Because this man loves our nation. 00:06:39.439 --> 00:06:40.359 He's Roman, yes. 00:06:40.419 --> 00:06:41.419 But he loves our nation. 00:06:41.619 --> 00:06:43.259 And he helped us build the synagogue. 00:06:45.119 --> 00:06:49.619 Now as you read the Gospels, you find that the Jews and the Romans working together 00:06:49.619 --> 00:06:51.379 was unheard of for something good. 00:06:53.500 --> 00:06:55.459 For something in favour of Jesus. 00:06:55.459 --> 00:06:59.899 So as we read that, it should take us a back. 00:07:01.139 --> 00:07:05.560 Are you telling me that the Roman centurion, that he called on the Jews, 00:07:05.939 --> 00:07:08.639 those prominent social and religious leaders, 00:07:08.759 --> 00:07:10.819 to see if they would go and see Jesus? 00:07:11.779 --> 00:07:13.539 And see if he would come back and be his servant? 00:07:15.259 --> 00:07:16.240 Are they friends? 00:07:17.819 --> 00:07:19.199 So if you can go through the Gospels and all that, 00:07:19.279 --> 00:07:20.399 they're not normally friends, are they? 00:07:21.419 --> 00:07:22.979 Jews do not normally like Romans, 00:07:22.979 --> 00:07:25.060 and Romans do not normally like Jews. 00:07:26.319 --> 00:07:27.979 Well, it seems like they're friends here, isn't it? 00:07:28.819 --> 00:07:31.339 And the reason they're friends is given to us in the passage. 00:07:31.459 --> 00:07:32.839 Can you look at the end of verse 5? 00:07:33.099 --> 00:07:35.859 This thing to me, he loves our nation, 00:07:36.979 --> 00:07:38.719 and he's the one who built us our synagogue. 00:07:39.379 --> 00:07:40.399 Or he helped build it. 00:07:41.339 --> 00:07:43.099 He either funded it, 00:07:43.740 --> 00:07:45.359 or he supplied people to help build it. 00:07:45.360 --> 00:07:49.020 So either he's a God-fearing, 00:07:49.340 --> 00:07:51.420 a God-fearing Gentile, 00:07:51.680 --> 00:07:53.280 that is a convert to Judaism, 00:07:54.340 --> 00:07:56.780 or at least he's somebody who's sympathetic, 00:07:58.259 --> 00:07:59.699 of those he oversees, 00:07:59.819 --> 00:08:00.819 of those whom he polices, 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:01.680 those he guards. 00:08:01.800 --> 00:08:02.360 Well, maybe. 00:08:03.319 --> 00:08:04.040 Maybe he's both. 00:08:05.580 --> 00:08:08.199 Whatever it is, Jesus actually doesn't seem very surprised 00:08:08.199 --> 00:08:10.280 by the Jews and the Gentiles working together. 00:08:10.279 --> 00:08:12.059 So that's our question. 00:08:12.859 --> 00:08:14.439 What takes Jesus aback? 00:08:15.919 --> 00:08:17.319 Why is Jesus surprised? 00:08:19.139 --> 00:08:21.419 Was it that the Roman soldier, 00:08:21.559 --> 00:08:22.979 the Roman centurion, 00:08:23.419 --> 00:08:26.159 wanted Jesus' help on behalf of his servant? 00:08:27.859 --> 00:08:29.159 Look at verses 1 and 2. 00:08:29.160 --> 00:08:32.300 After he'd finished all his sayings, 00:08:33.040 --> 00:08:34.340 and that is the Sermon on the Plain, 00:08:34.399 --> 00:08:35.300 the little sayings of Jesus, 00:08:35.399 --> 00:08:36.440 like I love your enemies, 00:08:37.519 --> 00:08:38.480 he entered Capernaum. 00:08:38.700 --> 00:08:40.840 And now a centurion had a servant who was sick, 00:08:40.920 --> 00:08:42.180 and at the point of death, 00:08:42.500 --> 00:08:45.480 who was highly valued by him. 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:47.120 Isn't that an interesting phrase? 00:08:47.639 --> 00:08:48.360 Highly valued. 00:08:50.139 --> 00:08:51.279 How was he highly valued? 00:08:51.540 --> 00:08:52.180 Ask that question. 00:08:53.660 --> 00:08:54.460 In which sense? 00:08:55.620 --> 00:08:58.940 The servant might have been highly valued, 00:08:59.159 --> 00:09:00.539 in that he was useful. 00:09:01.459 --> 00:09:03.299 A good servant is hard to was more like a son to him. 00:09:19.779 --> 00:09:21.459 Now what is potentially surprising, 00:09:21.459 --> 00:09:23.459 is if we lived in the Greco-Roman world, 00:09:23.519 --> 00:09:25.519 if we lived in the world that Jesus lived, 00:09:25.519 --> 00:09:30.360 the average slave owner had very little time in regard for slaves. 00:09:31.259 --> 00:09:32.539 He treated them like animals. 00:09:33.980 --> 00:09:35.059 So in his book Ethics, 00:09:35.159 --> 00:09:36.539 the philosopher Aristotle said, 00:09:36.759 --> 00:09:39.120 there should be no friendship between inanimate things, 00:09:44.560 --> 00:09:47.139 said the only difference between a slave and a beast, 00:09:47.539 --> 00:09:48.379 and a cart, 00:09:48.460 --> 00:09:49.659 was that the slave talked. 00:09:51.539 --> 00:09:52.519 Do you see the surprise? 00:09:52.960 --> 00:09:55.100 Once he put it in his historical setting, 00:09:57.560 --> 00:09:58.740 it is surprising, isn't it? 00:09:59.480 --> 00:10:01.620 But this high-powered soldier, 00:10:01.759 --> 00:10:03.659 this mighty soldier of the establishment, 00:10:04.039 --> 00:10:05.259 cared about a lonely slave. 00:10:05.259 --> 00:10:07.480 Let the slave die, acquire another one. 00:10:08.340 --> 00:10:09.100 Or at the very least, 00:10:09.159 --> 00:10:11.159 don't humiliate yourself in front of everyone, 00:10:11.159 --> 00:10:13.579 by begging to this Jesus, 00:10:13.719 --> 00:10:16.059 a man of little social consequence. 00:10:18.279 --> 00:10:20.339 But even though the centurion 00:10:20.339 --> 00:10:22.879 is asking for his servant to be healed, 00:10:23.019 --> 00:10:24.519 I don't think that surprises Jesus at all. 00:10:26.159 --> 00:10:27.339 If anyone 00:10:27.339 --> 00:10:30.179 was a high-ranking person, 00:10:30.419 --> 00:10:31.860 well, it is Jesus, isn't it? 00:10:31.860 --> 00:10:33.959 God incarnate is as high as he can, 00:10:34.039 --> 00:10:34.899 I'd argue. 00:10:36.279 --> 00:10:37.879 And
