00:03:31.300 --> 00:03:32.460 He's an odds-on favourite. 00:03:33.100 --> 00:03:37.000 I don't know if you've heard that phrase before or used that phrase before. 00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:38.740 We often use it in our culture, don't we? 00:03:38.780 --> 00:03:46.060 When we talk about people who we think are most likely to win something. 00:03:46.259 --> 00:03:55.360 So, I don't know whether it's the best film director at the Oscars or best in show at Crufts or top goal scorer in the Premier League. 00:03:55.360 --> 00:03:58.740 All these things have an odds-on favourite. 00:04:00.160 --> 00:04:01.560 And Nicodemus is another one of those. 00:04:01.660 --> 00:04:03.280 He's an odds-on favourite. 00:04:03.500 --> 00:04:06.660 And so the question then becomes, he's the favourite for what? 00:04:06.720 --> 00:04:08.120 I mean, is he up for a Grammy or something? 00:04:08.240 --> 00:04:08.460 No. 00:04:09.400 --> 00:04:16.220 This conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, if you've got the text there, it centres around verse 15. 00:04:16.220 --> 00:04:21.520 This thing that Jesus calls eternal life. 00:04:22.520 --> 00:04:22.860 Right? 00:04:22.900 --> 00:04:35.300 And we find Jesus all the way through Joan's Gospel using this repeated phrase and making this repeated claim that he has come that we may have eternal life. 00:04:36.960 --> 00:04:38.180 And now what does that mean? Lewis once said too, often we are like children who are content, we're happy making mud pies in the dirt. 00:06:16.439 --> 00:06:21.779 To stop and contemplate what's on offer of a holiday at the 00:06:27.860 --> 00:06:32.860 Why is this man, Nicodemus, the odds-on favourite to get it? 00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:42.800 And I guess the answer is because this man in this day, Nicodemus, owns, quite frankly, a spiritual CV to die for. 00:06:42.899 --> 00:06:46.100 I mean, his credentials here are simply outstanding. 00:06:47.379 --> 00:06:48.899 Look with me at verse 1. 00:06:49.060 --> 00:06:51.279 This guy is an Orthodox Jew. 00:06:51.480 --> 00:06:51.600 Right? 00:06:51.659 --> 00:06:52.980 Great start in this day. 00:06:52.980 --> 00:07:07.680 And he's part of this devout group called the Pharisees who are deeply committed to external purity, legal observance and scripture knowledge which is unmatched. 00:07:09.060 --> 00:07:13.720 And Nicodemus is part of the religious ruling council of the day as well called the Sanhedrin. 00:07:13.900 --> 00:07:22.379 So, you bring that all together, this man holds in his hands what I guess we would call today the equivalent of a religious royal flush. 00:07:22.379 --> 00:07:22.659 Right? 00:07:22.699 --> 00:07:27.680 You are just not touching this guy when it comes to his religious CV. 00:07:27.819 --> 00:07:28.879 We're not beating him. 00:07:30.079 --> 00:07:31.019 And here's the point. 00:07:31.120 --> 00:07:39.379 The point is that if you'd asked anyone who was around at the time, who is the odds-on favourite to get eternal life? 00:07:39.600 --> 00:07:42.860 Every single person is pointing squarely at this guy. 00:07:43.659 --> 00:07:44.319 It's him. 00:07:44.319 --> 00:07:49.879 And the odds-on favourite goes the crowd. 00:08:37.299 --> 00:08:38.419 And maybe he's thinking to himself. 00:08:38.500 --> 00:08:40.159 Maybe it's time that I met this guy. 00:08:40.279 --> 00:08:41.460 And you know, I sussed him It's a very polite play. 00:09:49.059 --> 00:09:49.419 Rabbi. 00:09:51.120 --> 00:09:52.080 Nicodemus makes his play. 00:09:52.199 --> 00:09:54.840 And in turn, Jesus responds. 00:09:54.840 --> 00:09:56.340 And he challenges. 00:09:56.340 --> 00:10:02.200 And he flips the entire way that Nicodemus understands himself. 00:10:02.540 --> 00:10:06.980 And understands life completely on its head. 00:10:08.120 --> 00:10:11.639 Because Jesus says two things to Nicodemus about eternal life. 00:10:11.639 --> 00:10:18.399 Firstly, Nicodemus, there's nothing you can do to earn it. 00:10:19.899 --> 00:10:24.860 You must be born again, says Jesus. 00:10:24.860 --> 00:10:28.740 And that is a bizarre metaphor, is it not? 00:10:29.039 --> 00:10:32.919 Really confusing one if you think about it. 00:10:32.940 --> 00:10:35.840 And you can see this guy Nicodemus stopping and thinking, how does that work? 00:10:35.879 --> 00:10:37.800 He's thinking back to the biology lesson at school. 00:10:37.899 --> 00:10:41.019 He's thinking, how does that work? 00:10:41.019 --> 00:10:46.240 Especially if you consider that Nicodemus is most likely an older man at this point in his life. 00:10:48.100 --> 00:10:49.399 It's a bizarre metaphor. 00:10:50.779 --> 00:10:55.860 But it's a metaphor that precisely makes the point. 00:10:56.179 --> 00:10:59.779 Jesus says you must be born 00:11:24.360 You know, the kind you would get on motivational posters that you would buy at a student fair. 00:11:24.360 --> 00:11:29.840 The truth is that I did next to nothing. 00:11:30.539 --> you are demonstrating that you are on the right side of God and in the kingdom. 00:12:29.639 --> 00:12:30.759 That's what he's thinking. 00:12:31.720 --> 00:12:35.299 But here's noticing what Jesus 00:12:48.259 Remember when you were at school and you went with your homework to your teacher and she said, go back and look at your sums. 00:12:48.599 --> 00:12:50.159 And you went back and you looked over again. 00:12:50.240 --> 00:12:51.519 You thought, oh, that's how that works. 00:12:51.559 --> 00:12:53.439 And then you went back to your teacher and she went, well done. 00:12:53.519 --> 00:13:11.159 --> 00:13:26.559 This is about God by his grace and his mercy and by the power of his Holy Spirit giving Nicodemus a brand new heart. 00:13:27.839 --> 00:13:37.459 Working in him to bring a complete inner cleansing and transformation of his entire being. 00:13:37.460 --> 00:13:43.639 Only possible by the grace of God through the power of the Spirit of God. 00:13:44.960 --> 00:13:47.639 just coming straight back at me. 00:14:32.320 --> 00:14:36.660 That's the point that Jesus is making, isn't it? 00:14:36.660 --> 00:14:41.860 You can't see the wind, but you can feel it and see its time reading the Bible with people. 00:15:05.460 --> 00:15:13.899 And one of the most incredible privileges is reading the Bible with people and seeing them not understand it. 00:15:14.720 --> 00:15:18.940 And in one day, by the grace of God, all of a sudden they see it. 00:15:18.940 --> 00:15:31.540 I know not how the Spirit moves, convincing men of sin, revealing Jesus through the words, creating faith in him. 00:15:32.400 --> 00:15:35.800 And so here's what this means, if you're watching this today, whoever you are. 00:15:35.860 --> 00:15:37.960 If you're watching this and your faith
