00:01:58.700 And the Beatitudes are at the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew. 00:01:58.920 --> 00:02:01.260 In the Gospel of Matthew, if you're not familiar with it, 00:02:01.260 --> 00:02:05.860 it's basically a biography about Jesus, God with us, the King. 00:02:07.400 --> 00:02:10.040 And so we learn early, like in chapter 3, 00:02:11.860 --> 00:02:16.500 Jesus is baptized by J.T.B., John the Baptist. 00:02:16.500 --> 00:02:21.039 And then in chapter 4, Jesus is tempted by the devil. 00:02:21.439 --> 00:02:25.379 And he responds every time by quoting God's word. 00:02:26.340 --> 00:02:27.560 He starts his public ministry. 00:02:27.719 --> 00:02:29.460 He starts gathering his disciples. 00:02:30.900 --> 00:02:34.180 And here he sits on a mountainside 00:02:34.180 --> 00:02:41.379 and preaches what is likely the greatest sermon ever preached. 00:02:41.379 --> 00:02:48.659 It is his inaugural address as Emmanuel, the King. 00:02:49.840 --> 00:02:53.240 It is his kingdom manifesto. 00:02:54.400 --> 00:02:58.759 And in this sermon, he moves from the character of his citizens 00:02:58.759 --> 00:03:01.560 to the conduct of his citizens. 00:03:01.719 --> 00:03:05.099 And we're going to be focusing for the next two months 00:03:05.099 --> 00:03:10.000 on the character of his citizens right out of the Beatitudes. 00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:17.620 He's very 00:03:48.819 --> 00:03:55.359 We're going to be in the middle of a contentious presidential election. 00:03:57.000 --> 00:04:04.120 And the likelihood of you being influenced by that election is high. 00:04:04.120 --> 00:04:11.840 That you would form your identity functionally from what you're hearing day in and day out 00:04:11.840 --> 00:04:12.500 through the election. 00:04:13.500 --> 00:04:18.800 That you will be affected emotionally, internally by what you're seeing and hearing. 00:04:20.160 --> 00:04:24.180 So, I want to love you through this election cycle. 00:04:24.180 --> 00:04:30.480 And I want to not just remind you that you are a citizen of the kingdom, brother, sister. 00:04:32.060 --> 00:04:36.540 But citizens of the kingdom have a particular posture of heart. 00:04:37.579 --> 00:04:44.280 A character that is spelt out by Jesus, our King, here in the Beatitudes. 00:04:44.279 --> 00:04:55.299 Now, when you read, blessed are the poor in spirit, I'm guessing you're thinking something. 00:04:55.500 --> 00:04:57.219 You're like, well, that sounds interesting. 00:04:59.739 --> 00:05:03.939 I'm not wanting to really sign up for poor or poverty, though. 00:05:06.759 --> 00:05:09.759 What I want to help you to see is this poverty of spirit. 00:05:09.759 --> 00:05:13.579 It's not something so much you do. 00:05:14.719 --> 00:05:16.420 It's something you are. 00:05:18.079 --> 00:05:26.000 It's a spiritual bankruptcy that we all need to declare on a daily basis. 00:05:27.459 --> 00:05:29.519 And there is great blessing in that. 00:05:31.779 --> 00:05:37.879 And so this morning, we're going to tackle the first of these eight Beatitudes. 00:05:37.879 --> 00:05:41.040 And there's a reason why this is the first one. 00:05:41.500 --> 00:05:46.159 Jesus is brilliant in leading off with this. 00:05:47.100 --> 00:05:51.759 We're going to get into not just blessed are the poor, but we're going to look next week. 00:05:52.159 --> 00:05:55.579 Blessed are those who mourn, who are meek, hunger, and thirst after righteousness, 00:05:56.259 --> 00:05:58.300 who are merciful, pure in heart. 00:05:58.439 --> 00:05:59.420 They're peacemakers. 00:06:11.080 --> 00:06:17.980 These are eight distinct character traits of every citizen of the kingdom. 00:06:18.660 --> 00:06:21.420 So here's how we're going to proceed this morning with this first one. 00:06:21.760 --> 00:06:24.020 I'm going to ask four questions and answer them. 00:06:24.220 --> 00:06:28.760 Question number one is, hey, what's the biblical landscape that we're in right now? 00:06:38.300 Who are the poor in spirit? 00:06:39.120 --> 00:06:40.320 What does that mean? 00:06:41.140 --> 00:06:46.180 The third question is going to be, why is being poor in spirit first? 00:06:47.840 --> 00:06:51.740 And then fourth, how do we do the poor in spirit thing? 00:06:52.440 --> 00:06:54.980 What does that look like on a daily basis? 00:06:54.980 --> 00:06:56.640 How do we do that? 00:07:00.280 --> 00:07:04.759 So in light of that, let's turn to this first question. 00:07:06.960 --> 00:07:11.240 What is this biblical landscape of the Sermon on the Mount? 00:07:12.680 --> 00:07:16.360 If you're showing up to a city for the first time, you want to get your bearings, right? 00:07:17.240 --> 00:07:18.400 You want to know where you are. 00:07:18.399 --> 00:07:23.799 And so when we turn to the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5, 6, and 7, 00:07:24.060 --> 00:07:27.779 I just want to give you an overall flow of the sermon. 00:07:29.299 --> 00:07:31.819 Jesus isn't preaching an enumerated sermon. 00:07:32.399 --> 00:07:36.079 In other words, he's not making four points, and we don't see him saying, 00:07:36.479 --> 00:07:39.699 point one, and then moving on to point two, point three, point four. 00:07:40.659 --> 00:07:43.719 But there is this definitive movement in the sermon. 00:07:44.099 --> 00:07:44.899 Let me help you see it. 00:07:44.899 --> 00:07:53.959 In chapter 5, 3 through 16, Jesus talks about character through the Beatitudes. 00:07:54.959 --> 00:07:57.419 This is who we are as citizens of the kingdom. 00:07:57.879 --> 00:08:00.079 This is what marks us. 00:08:01.739 --> 00:08:05.679 And then in chapter 5, verses 17 through chapter 7, verse 27, 00:08:06.679 --> 00:08:11.639 he focuses on the conduct of citizens of his kingdom. 00:08:11.639 --> 00:08:16.639 And he spells that out through obeying particular commands he issues. 00:08:17.939 --> 00:08:23.159 And so the movement on the Sermon on the Mount starts with character and moves to conduct. 00:08:24.120 --> 00:08:27.860 And what I want to help you to see, it's all about God's grace. 00:08:28.879 --> 00:08:33.059 All of these blessings, blessed be, blessed, blessed, 00:08:33.279 --> 00:08:40.340 that is declarations of God's grace on this particular citizen of the kingdom. 00:08:40.340 --> 00:08:44.040 God's grace changing character. 00:08:44.560 --> 00:08:48.660 And as a result, God's grace changing conduct. 00:08:52.399 --> 00:08:58.040 So first and foremost, I want to help you to see this feature of this landscape, this sermon. 00:08:59.120 --> 00:09:00.680 00:09:19.659 --> 00:09:21.159 First, there's an order. 00:09:21.739 --> 00:09:25.119 There's a reason why he starts in pouring the Spirit and ends in, 00:09:25.959 --> 00:09:27.019 blessed are the persecuted. 00:09:28.239 --> 00:09:29.959 But there's some other things I want you to notice. 00:09:29.960 --> 00:09:36.519 All eight of these Beatitudes, all eight are to characterize each of us. 00:09:37.120 --> 00:09:42.000 It's like the fruit of the Spirit, where all nine fruit of the Spirit are to characterize each Christian. 00:09:42.440 --> 00:09:46.480 All eight of these character traits in the Beatitudes are to mark every one of us. 00:09:47.780 --> 00:09:52.080 Furthermore, there is this already not yet aspect to the Beatitudes. 00:09:52.180 --> 00:09:52.780 You can see it. look down at verse 10, it says, 00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:06.699 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 00:10:07.299 --> 00:10:11.720 That same phrase, that same promise is used at the beginning and the end of the Beatitudes, 00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:13.159 and it bookends it. 00:10:13.199 --> 00:10:14.179 It's an inclusio. 00:10:14.299 --> 00:10:16.860 It helps you to think it's being framed by that. 00:10:16.860 --> 00:10:23.340 So, all of these Beatitudes are, there's this like now component to it. 00:10:23.399 --> 00:10:24.240 It's now. 00:10:24.580 --> 00:10:26.220 The kingdom is ours now. 00:10:27.340 --> 00:10:30.580 But as you look at the six Beatitudes inside those, 00:10:31.320 --> 00:10:32.700 all the promises are future. 00:10:33.919 --> 00:10:36.379 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 00:10:36.759 --> 00:10:39.259 Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. 00:10:39.259 --> 00:10:41.940 And so there is this future orientation. 00:10:43.080 --> 00:10:45.899 There's this already and not yet, which means this. 00:10:45.899 --> 00:10:50.139 Yes, we're going to experience 00:11:19.579 --> 00:11:20.500 This is Emmanuel. 00:11:22.059 --> 00:11:26.059 This God-man would die and be raised from the dead. 00:11:26.139 --> 00:11:27.559 He's reigning on high right now. 00:11:28.019 --> 00:11:31.559 He's the Psalm 2 son on the throne. 00:11:31.559 --> 00:11:35.979 And here he sat down. 00:11:36.919 --> 00:11:38.619 It's the posture of a rabbi. 00:11:39.439 --> 00:11:41.479 And his disciples come around him. 00:11:41.979 --> 00:11:44.339 Here's how I want you to think about the next two months. 00:11:45.239 --> 00:11:47.000 Think about Jesus sitting down. 00:11:48.199 --> 00:11:54.479 And we, his disciples, Sunday after Sunday, are coming around him to hear what he says. 00:11:54.480 --> 00:11:59.500 And not just hear it so we can hear it, but we hear it so we can live it. 00:12:01.840 --> 00:12:10.960 So there's some biblical landscape for you to get your bearings as we now head into the first Beatitude. 00:12:11.779 --> 00:12:13.580 So let's ask 00:13:04.240 --> 00:13:07.120 nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers, 00:13:07.259 --> 00:13:09.180 but his delight is in the law of the Lord, 00:13:09.240 --> 00:13:11.879 and on his law he meditates day and night. 00:13:11.879 --> 00:13:17.240 We just heard Les read it in Psalm 2. 00:13:17.419 --> 00:13:18.939 The first one was Psalm 1-1, by the way. 00:13:19.720 --> 00:13:22.139 Kiss the son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, 00:13:22.480 --> 00:13:24.759 for his wrath is quickly kindled. 00:13:25.179 --> 00:13:27.659 Blessed are all who take refuge in whose trust is the Lord. 00:13:58.480 --> 00:14:01.399 The word blessed gets used in your Bible in a variety of ways. 00:14:01.720 --> 00:14:05.159 People bless God, but God blesses people. 00:14:05.399 --> 00:14:06.740 It's a way of talking about approval. 00:14:06.740 --> 00:14:12.980 So when we hear Jesus say blessed repeatedly, 00:14:13.299 --> 00:14:16.500 he's talking about people in whom God has blessed. 00:14:17.440 --> 00:14:19.139 God has graced. 00:14:20.299 --> 00:14:24.560 God has approved, not by any merit on their own, 00:14:24.940 --> 00:14:28.899 but by a sheer act of grace. 00:14:28.899 --> 00:14:32.659 All this blessedness, all this blessedness, 00:14:33.240 --> 00:14:36.379 at the heart of it is God's grace. 00:14:38.379 --> 00:14:43.459 Undeserved, unmerited grace. 00:14:43.460 --> 00:14:51.720 These kingdom citizens are citizens who've been delivered out of the domain of darkness 00:14:51.720 --> 00:14:55.240 and transferred into the kingdom of the 00:15:06.919 --> 00:15:10.419 This is not some blessing that happens as a result of our obedience. 00:15:13.159 --> 00:15:15.460 It's by God's grace and God's grace alone. 00:15:17.659 --> 00:15:21.220 And so when we read blessed are the poor in spirit, 00:15:21.419 --> 00:15:22.419 do you know what's being said? 00:15:22.419 --> 00:15:29.000 Graced are those who've declared spiritual bankruptcy. 00:15:30.759 --> 00:15:32.039 Graced of God. 00:15:34.439 --> 00:15:39.459 Happy are those who've experienced the undeserved approval of God 00:15:39.459 --> 00:15:43.279 in their spiritual bankruptcy. 00:15:45.179 --> 00:15:47.819 So let's talk about what this poor in spirit means. 00:15:48.519 --> 00:15:50.980 The poverty here is not a material poverty. 00:15:50.980 --> what does it mean to be poor in spirit? 00:19:02.480 --> 00:19:04.460 It means to be humble towards God. 00:19:05.460 --> 00:19:11.059 To be able to say at any given time, oh God, have mercy on me, a
