And after foregoing the ritual washing, to the surprise and scorn of the Pharisees, Jesus began to rebuke the Pharisees and to call them out for their hypocrisy. 00:00:27.600 --> 00:00:40.420 And we saw Jesus respond to them with very passionate and strong words. 00:00:44.439 --> 00:00:47.700 Then we heard a little bit about what happened after this. 00:00:48.500 --> 00:00:56.640 When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to beseech him with questions. 00:00:57.600 --> 00:00:59.899 Waiting to catch him in something he might say. 00:01:01.820 --> 00:01:07.219 So after saying those things, Jesus exits the house and out come the hornets. 00:01:07.780 --> 00:01:09.299 And they are mad. 00:01:10.299 --> 00:01:13.560 Can you maybe left off of Jesus so that he could go in and have dinner with the Pharisees begin to return. 00:02:01.500 --> 00:02:04.780 And the number of people, Luke tells us, grows into the thousands. 00:02:04.780 --> 00:02:08.939 Luke 12 verse 1. 00:02:09.060 --> 00:02:15.719 Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered, so that they were trampling on one another, 00:02:16.460 --> 00:02:20.219 Jesus began to speak first to his disciples. 00:02:21.340 --> 00:02:22.420 So can you imagine this? 00:02:22.479 --> 00:02:23.139 Can you picture it? 00:02:23.500 --> 00:02:28.780 Everybody wants to get closer to see and hear what's going on. 00:02:28.780 --> 00:02:32.000 So much so that they're stepping on each other. 00:02:32.120 --> 00:02:37.759 They're knocking each other over as they push in towards Jesus. 00:02:40.060 --> 00:02:44.379 According to Luke, Jesus begins in this moment to speak to his disciples. 00:02:45.500 --> 00:02:48.939 I guess the conversation with the Pharisees was going nowhere. 00:02:50.099 --> 00:02:53.580 They aren't really there to listen or to learn. 00:02:53.580 --> 00:02:58.260 And so Jesus now turns to his disciples and begins to speak to them. 00:02:59.120 --> 00:03:01.939 And the first thing that he says is this. 00:03:03.180 --> 00:03:11.540 Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 00:03:11.539 --> 00:03:19.400 So Jesus has already been rebuking them privately about this in the house. 00:03:19.659 --> 00:03:21.459 Now he's doing it publicly. 00:03:22.159 --> 00:03:24.819 It's not behind their backs because they're there. 00:03:27.519 --> 00:03:33.419 And now he is warning his disciples not to follow or become like the Pharisees. 00:03:34.219 --> 00:03:40.859 Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. 00:03:41.539 --> 00:03:46.620 Now why the metaphor of yeast or leaven? 00:03:47.439 --> 00:03:53.759 And I think there's two characteristics of yeast that factor into Jesus' meaning. 00:03:54.979 --> 00:03:57.219 First, yeast spreads. 00:03:58.219 --> 00:03:59.599 It multiplies. 00:04:00.379 --> 00:04:04.139 As the Apostle Paul says in Galatians and in his letter to the Corinthians, 00:04:04.719 --> 00:04:07.919 a little yeast leavens the whole lump. 00:04:07.919 --> 00:04:12.399 And if you've ever made bread, it's quite something, isn't it? 00:04:12.839 --> 00:04:15.039 It doesn't take much of those little yeast pellets. 00:04:16.039 --> 00:04:21.019 But that whole loaf, that whole batch of dough is soon affected by it. 00:04:21.539 --> 00:04:26.779 It begins to rise as the organisms multiply and give off gas. 00:04:28.060 --> 00:04:29.959 So yeast is potent stuff. 00:04:29.959 --> 00:04:31.500 It spreads. 00:04:33.000 --> they polish that. 00:05:33.819 --> 00:05:37.319 But inside, what's hiding in there? 00:05:39.000 --> 00:05:43.379 They're full of greed and wickedness, said Jesus. 00:05:44.099 --> 00:05:46.759 So hypocrisy can be insidious. 00:05:47.920 --> 00:05:53.159 It's kind of like the solid oak bed frame that I bought one time off of Kijiji. 00:05:54.360 --> 00:05:57.519 The pictures weren't all that 00:09:38.680 don't be like the Pharisees in their hypocrisy, 00:09:38.779 --> 00:09:40.759 because anything you try 00:09:40.759 --> 00:09:44.519 to hide or keep secret 00:09:44.519 --> 00:09:47.639
