00:02:04.520 --> 00:02:07.600 Probably Paul is speaking in Timothy's writing, 00:02:07.659 --> 00:02:08.860 or something along those lines, 00:02:08.860 --> 00:02:10.340 but they're the authors. 00:02:11.020 --> 00:02:15.180 And then they're writing to a people in a city called Colossae, 00:02:15.260 --> 00:02:16.320 a church in Colossae, 00:02:17.220 --> 00:02:19.980 that they became this church, God's people, 00:02:20.340 --> 00:02:21.480 by the will of God, 00:02:21.760 --> 00:02:24.900 as a man named Epaphras came and proclaimed the gospel. 00:02:25.220 --> 00:02:26.220 They heard the gospel, 00:02:26.660 --> 00:02:27.900 they believed the gospel, 00:02:28.220 --> 00:02:29.840 and by grace, through faith, 00:02:30.140 --> 00:02:31.620 they became God's people, 00:02:32.060 --> 00:02:34.620 and yet are still in this city of Colossae. 00:02:35.480 --> 00:02:37.680 In short, Paul has identified, 00:02:37.680 --> 00:02:39.800 essentially who he's writing to, 00:02:40.280 --> 00:02:41.840 and who they are in Christ. 00:02:41.939 --> 00:02:43.760 We heard two beautiful stories this morning, 00:02:43.860 --> 00:02:45.939 of someone becoming a new creation, 00:02:46.060 --> 00:02:51.159 --> 00:02:53.280 gathered together as Christ's body, 00:02:53.379 --> 00:02:53.980 the church, 00:02:54.340 --> 00:02:55.659 in the city of Colossae. 00:02:56.360 --> 00:02:57.700 Okay, now in today's passage, 00:02:57.780 --> 00:02:58.540 what Paul's going to do, 00:02:58.600 --> 00:02:59.939 he's going to point out, 00:02:59.939 --> 00:03:02.020 that since they are now in Christ, 00:03:02.859 --> 00:03:04.039 they are a new people, 00:03:04.039 --> 00:03:05.900 who live under a new Lord, 00:03:06.460 --> 00:03:07.740 namely Lord Jesus. 00:03:08.539 --> 00:03:10.359 And that life under Lord Jesus, 00:03:10.359 --> 00:03:11.340 is different, 00:03:11.719 --> 00:03:13.300 than life under any other Lord. 00:03:13.900 --> 00:03:15.280 So today's main idea, 00:03:15.379 --> century. 00:04:53.680 --> 00:04:55.759 This is very specific language, 00:04:55.879 --> 00:04:56.759 Paul just used. 00:04:58.019 --> 00:04:58.219 Okay, 00:04:58.339 --> 00:04:59.399 in Colossae, 00:04:59.959 --> 00:05:01.120 in the first century, 00:05:01.879 --> 00:05:03.439 the ideas of life, 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:04.379 land, 00:05:04.459 --> 00:05:05.339 and lordship, 00:05:05.459 --> 00:05:07.000 are completely bound together. 00:05:07.459 --> 00:05:08.279 They're inseparable. 00:05:09.279 --> 00:05:10.639 You lived life, 00:05:11.019 --> 00:05:12.000 on a land, 00:05:12.719 --> 00:05:13.800 under a Lord, 00:05:14.480 --> 00:05:15.159 you could call Him, 00:05:15.219 --> 00:05:15.659 Master, 00:05:16.219 --> 00:05:16.939 Landowner, 00:05:17.500 --> 00:05:17.819 King, 00:05:17.819 --> 00:05:19.219 whatever the term might be, 00:05:19.300 --> 00:05:19.920 in your area, 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:20.480 in the world, 00:05:20.800 --> 00:05:21.920 but that it was the Lord, 00:05:21.959 --> 00:05:22.680 of the land. 00:05:23.180 --> 00:05:24.860 And so I think we have a map, 00:05:24.959 --> 00:05:25.620 so Colossae, 00:05:25.980 --> 00:05:27.379 there's a couple 00:05:51.759 And how do they get people's money? 00:05:51.860 --> 00:05:52.019 Well, 00:05:52.120 --> 00:05:54.420 you provide some sort of good. 00:05:55.500 --> 00:05:56.579 And in Colossae, 00:05:56.660 --> 00:05:58.100 the goods are food, 00:05:58.819 --> 00:05:59.519 and wool, 00:05:59.519 --> 00:06:00.180 from the sheep. 00:06:00.280 --> 00:06:00.920 So they're farmers, 00:06:01.100 --> 00:06:01.800 and they're shepherds. 00:06:02.579 --> 00:06:03.139 They then, 00:06:03.139 --> 00:06:04.639 send their goods, 00:06:05.280 --> 00:06:06.259 200 kilometers, 00:06:06.439 --> 00:06:07.420 to the Mediterranean Sea, 00:06:07.560 --> 00:06:08.780 probably at the city of Ephesus. 00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:10.280 And that's the maximum, 00:06:10.480 --> 00:06:11.980 Rome's willing to really accept, 00:06:12.060 --> 00:06:13.240 any goods over land. 00:06:13.600 --> 00:06:14.460 200 kilometers. 00:06:14.660 --> 00:06:15.180 After that, 00:06:15.439 --> 00:06:16.220 they're not ton of letters, 00:08:32.379 --> 00:08:33.299 and in a lot of those letters, 00:08:33.680 --> 00:08:36.320 he's writing to someone who works lands that he owns. 00:08:36.379 --> 00:08:36.659 And he says, 00:08:36.940 --> 00:08:38.279 make sure you grow these things, 00:08:38.419 --> 00:08:40.080 make sure you sell them for these prices, 00:08:40.480 --> 00:08:41.060 make sure this, 00:08:41.159 --> 00:08:41.740 make sure that. 00:08:42.080 --> 00:08:43.659 He's nowhere near those lands, 00:08:43.759 --> 00:08:44.960 but he's giving the instructions, 00:08:45.419 --> 00:08:46.139 giving the orders, 00:08:46.340 --> 00:08:48.080 and they're expected to do what he says, 00:08:48.159 --> 00:08:49.519 because he's the Lord of the land. 00:08:49.519 --> 00:08:52.439 So with that in mind, 00:08:52.819 --> 00:08:54.220 let's look at Colossians 1, 00:08:54.419 --> 00:08:56.439 verses 9 and the first part of 10 again, 00:08:56.620 --> 00:08:59.360 so that we can hear it the way the Colossian again, 00:10:04.319 --> 00:10:04.959 how would you know? 00:10:05.819 --> 00:10:07.659 How would you know how to please the Lord? 00:10:08.899 --> 00:10:10.219 You'd have kind of two options. 00:10:10.319 --> 00:10:11.019 You could guess, 00:10:12.219 --> 00:10:13.759 and then you're just hit or miss, right? 00:10:13.759 --> 00:10:14.899 You could say, 00:10:14.980 -->
