ground for King David, the author of this psalm, is God. 00:03:41.520 --> 00:03:48.340 King David was one of the most powerful men in the region of the ancient Near East at the time that he wrote this psalm. 00:03:48.719 --> 00:03:51.420 Yet he faced internal and external conflict. 00:03:51.760 --> 00:03:54.360 And he knew that there was only one person that could guide him through. 00:03:54.439 --> 00:03:58.100 Despite all his power, he relied on the Lord as his shepherd. 00:03:58.939 --> 00:04:01.200 And he opens the psalm with those words. 00:04:01.379 --> 00:04:02.100 In verse 1, Lord. 00:04:59.399 --> 00:05:00.779 David's point. 00:05:02.199 --> 00:05:04.839 There is only one God. 00:05:06.039 --> 00:05:09.859 So every other God is an imposter. 00:05:11.919 --> 00:05:18.419 And this one God, says David, deserves your wholehearted devotion. 00:05:19.379 --> 00:05:20.539 Everything that you are. 00:05:20.540 --> 00:05:25.220 Now I say this knowing that some of us here aren't Christians. 00:05:25.600 --> 00:05:27.920 And that's probably going to sound pretty arrogant to you. 00:05:28.920 --> 00:05:33.120 In fact, probably going to sound pretty arrogant to some of us who are Christians. 00:05:34.680 --> 00:05:37.000 So let's just have a little bit of a talk about this for a moment. 00:05:37.180 --> 00:05:39.320 Because this is the very starting point of David's psalm. 00:05:39.680 --> 00:05:40.680 We need to get this right. 00:05:40.680 --> 00:05:49.840 We struggle with David's claim that there is one God, the Lord. 00:05:49.939 --> 00:05:53.540 This is the only person that can actually make sense of life and everything in it. 00:05:53.540 --> 00:05:57.280 We struggle with that because it's an absolute. 00:05:58.439 --> 00:06:02.980 It means that every other option that you can come up with is wrong. 00:06:04.400 --> 00:06:09.180 And we don't like that because we've bought into the idea that you respect each other's beliefs, as I said earlier. 00:06:09.180 --> 00:06:13.759 Now let me just get this straight. 00:06:14.139 --> 00:06:19.720 David didn't say this because he was an ignorant man born, you know, 3,000 years ago. 00:06:19.840 --> 00:06:20.759 So he knew no better. 00:06:21.579 --> 00:06:28.420 David was actually living in a context where the tolerance that we think we've just come up with was already in existence. 00:06:28.560 gods. 00:06:35.180 --> 00:06:39.000 But certainly every community of people, every ethnic group did. 00:06:39.180 --> 00:06:44.560 David wasn't ignorant of this issue when he wrote the psalm. 00:06:58.060 Well, you could say that he was being faithful to who God claims to be. 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:06.500 You could say that he said these things because he believed that he was right. 00:07:06.500 --> 00:07:13.360 And that this decision wasn't just a possible decision amongst many, but this was a life or death decision. 00:07:14.399 --> 00:07:15.819 It was that important. 00:07:17.879 --> 00:07:23.500 Let me try and explain this to you in terms of mine and Joe's life at the moment. 00:07:23.500 --> 00:07:29.120 Our sister-in-law has been diagnosed with cancer. 00:07:30.660 --> 00:07:32.199 She knows the diagnosis. 00:07:34.199 --> 00:07:37.680 The treatment options are really effective if they begin treatment now. 00:07:37.680 --> 00:07:41.660 But she's denied them all. 00:07:43.500 --> 00:07:47.639 Not because she wants to die, but because she's a Buddhist. 00:07:48.459 --> 00:07:53.620 And she believes that with the power of positive thinking, she can cleanse herself of this cancer. 00:07:53.620 --> 00:07:59.920 She believes that she can heal her own body with the power of her mind. 00:08:00.579 --> 00:08:03.720 It's a sincere belief. 00:08:05.240 --> 00:08:06.720 But it's not working. 00:08:07.980 --> 00:08:09.840 She's been given two years to live. 00:08:12.220 --> 00:08:13.540 So what do I do? 00:08:14.340 --> 00:08:15.540 What does Joe do? 00:08:15.540 --> 00:08:18.620 I respect her. 00:08:19.340 --> 00:08:21.540 I respect that she has her views. 00:08:23.319 --> 00:08:26.379 But I'm going to want to tell her what I believe to be the truth. 00:08:27.640 --> 00:08:31.920 I tell her that she's wrong and that she's dying and that there is hope. 00:08:34.120 --> 00:08:37.139 Friends, that's what King David is doing here as he writes this psalm. 00:08:37.139 --> 00:08:48.340 The king of Israel, during its golden age, knew that nothing else was enough except to turn independence to the one true God. 00:08:50.419 --> 00:08:56.259 And this mighty one true God over everything is knowable. 00:08:57.799 --> 00:09:02.220 We know this because this God is known to David by name. 00:09:02.319 --> 00:09:05.720 The word he uses here is Yahweh, the covenant name of God. 00:09:05.720 --> 00:09:09.000 The personal name that God revealed to Moses at the burning bush. 00:09:09.320 --> 00:09:11.480 It means I am who I am. 00:09:12.060 --> 00:09:13.600 I will be who I will be. 00:09:13.980 --> 00:09:15.940 He's the ultimate reference point. 00:09:17.680 --> 00:09:20.720 It means the God who promised to bless his people. 00:09:21.100 --> 00:09:23.100 It means the faithful and true one. 00:09:25.399 --> 00:09:31.879 When all around us is unstable and changing and falling apart, this God is stable. 00:09:32.720 --> 00:09:33.759 Rock steady. 00:09:35.100 --> 00:09:35.660 Faithful. 00:09:35.720 --> 00:09:43.320 And the metaphor that David uses to try and convey this to us is one that's very familiar to him. 00:09:43.379 --> 00:09:45.680 He was a shepherd before he became a king. 00:09:47.000 --> 00:09:50.360 And so he takes up this term, shepherd. 00:09:51.879 --> 00:09:55.639 And he says the words, the Lord is my shepherd. 00:09:55.639 --> 00:10:01.580 Again, there are two aspects to what David says here. 00:10:02.740 --> 00:10:04.439 First, he says he's my shepherd. 00:10:06.000 --> 00:10:08.439 And now a shepherd in David's time was a lifetime calling. 00:10:08.600 --> 00:10:09.720 It's all in. 00:10:10.139 --> 00:10:12.659 The shepherd lived with his flock 24-7. 00:10:14.019 --> our guide, our protector, our physician. 00:10:54.540 --> 00:10:58.180 And you see there that it's more than simply him being a shepherd. 00:10:59.259 --> 00:11:01.320 But it's that he's my shepherd. amazing how much effort and thought she'd put into caring for this horse. 00:11:36.659 --> 00:11:44.379 We were so thankful to our friends for offering to house this horse for us that we bought her a here? 00:14:26.399 --> 00:14:31.840 It's important to remember that this verse 1 is actually the heading for the psalm. 00:14:32.139 --> 00:14:33.340 It's the main point. 00:14:34.399 --> 00:14:39.319 So to get to the meaning of the main point, we actually need to read how David actually explains that point in the rest of the psalm. 00:14:39.480 --> 00:14:41.919 And that's where we start to get into verses 2 and 3 of it. 00:14:41.919 --> 00:14:48.620 We need this rest of the psalm to understand the breadth of who David is declaring God to be to us. 00:14:51.399 --> 00:14:56.079 And so as we read into the psalmist, we get to this point where we discover that he gives us rest. 00:14:58.199 --> 00:15:00.959 See, first David actually speaks from within that shepherding metaphor. 00:15:00.960 --> 00:15:07.540 And he says in verse 2, he makes me lie down in green pastures and he leads me beside still waters. 00:15:11.220 --> 00:15:15.560 Gareth read that better than I just did, but he's Welsh and, you know, Welsh and sheep. 00:15:15.860 --> 00:15:19.879 They have a close relationship, so he probably gets that better than I do. 00:15:20.379 --> 00:15:25.139 But what it is, is it's a poetic expression of God's care for us as his sheep, isn't it? 00:15:25.720 --> 00:15:29.160 It's a poetic way of saying that the Lord guides me and provides for me. 00:15:30.960 --> 00:15:35.740 And yet digging a little deeper, we can see how David drew on his knowledge of God's faithful provision. 00:15:35.879 --> 00:15:41.139 You see, the phrase still waters could be translated waters of rest. imagery that David is using here. 00:16:04.600 --> 00:16:10.680 He picks it up in Ezekiel 34 to actually project it into the future, to prophesy the future of an exiled Israel. 00:16:12.379 -->
