You know, that little 00:00:28.079 --> 00:00:36.679 bit of editing that generated days and days of media interest and speculation and chatter. 00:00:37.619 --> 00:00:48.039 In the absence of the princess, so much misinformation and misunderstanding was used to fill the vacuum. 00:00:49.719 --> 00:00:57.439 Thinking about that story this week perhaps helps us, in a sense, to appreciate some of the royal 00:00:57.439 --> 00:01:06.759 expectation there was as the crowds were heading to the festival in Jerusalem in that scene that we 00:01:06.759 --> 00:01:18.200 just read in Luke chapter 19. We have been following a crowd at fever pitch, waiting for the Messiah King. 00:01:18.200 --> 00:01:31.680 Is Jesus the one? And we have seen so much misunderstanding about the kind of King Jesus is and the timing of His kingdom. 00:01:33.040 --> 00:01:41.560 Now, we may or may not have paid any attention or be particularly bothered about royal stories in the press, 00:01:41.560 --> 00:01:48.799 but I would suggest that we all need to listen as King Jesus tells the story of God's King. 00:01:49.359 --> 00:01:56.480 Because in this little story, we have an explanation for history and how history will end, 00:01:57.280 --> 00:02:04.400 and we have revealed from Jesus our purpose as people until that point. 00:02:04.400 --> 00:02:14.020 This story, if we hear it well, will encourage us to live well as we mind the gap. 00:02:14.780 --> 00:02:19.240 You know, if you visit London and you're on the tube, and as the tube is drawing into the station, 00:02:19.360 --> 00:02:22.379 you hear that voice announce, please mind the gap. 00:02:23.200 --> 00:02:28.759 Now, watch your step as you continue on your journey as you leave the train. 00:02:28.759 --> 00:02:33.340 Well, the story Jesus tells strikes a similar note. 00:02:34.639 --> 00:02:40.340 He encourages the crowds and He encourages us to mind the gap between Jesus' first coming 00:02:40.340 --> 00:02:43.299 and His second coming. 00:02:43.939 --> 00:02:48.299 And again, what we see is that the timing of Jesus' return is unclear, 00:02:48.819 --> 00:02:52.560 but the reality that He will return is certain. 00:02:52.560 --> 00:03:00.939 And we are to mind the gap in the sense of being careful how we live, how we journey through this life. 00:03:02.060 --> 00:03:10.900 We have to be careful about our response to King Jesus and His summons for us to be servants. 00:03:12.300 --> 00:03:17.980 The story tells us that God's King has come, that His kingdom will come, 00:03:17.979 --> 00:03:20.799 and that His kingdom must grow. 00:03:22.759 --> 00:03:28.259 It's a story we all need a healthy interest in, a story that reminds us to mind the gap. 00:03:30.679 --> 00:03:34.939 Let's think, first of all, about the king's story, the story about a king. 00:03:36.780 --> 00:03:39.539 Perhaps you are familiar with the famous quote, 00:03:40.199 --> 00:03:45.599 those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat its mistakes. 00:03:45.599 --> 00:03:49.060 Well, did you know, I discovered this this week, 00:03:49.180 --> 00:03:53.759 Jesus bases this parable on a famous event in history. 00:03:54.939 --> 00:04:00.719 This was living memory for the people in Judea, Israel, Jerusalem at the time. 00:04:00.819 --> 00:04:06.699 So in 4 BC, and this is history, Herod the Great died. 00:04:07.539 --> 00:04:12.680 And when he died, he divided his kingdom between three of his sons. 00:04:12.680 --> 00:04:19.019 And to his son called Archelaus, he was given the title King of Judea. 00:04:20.220 --> 00:04:28.400 And so Archelaus, when the will was read, then made the procession to Rome to claim that title, 00:04:28.980 --> 00:04:30.680 to claim kingship. 00:04:31.480 --> 00:04:39.399 But as he traveled, a delegation of 50 people from Judea followed him 00:04:39.399 --> 00:04:41.519 to go to the Roman emperor to say, 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:43.519 we don't want this guy as king. 00:04:43.719 --> 00:04:45.939 He is unfit for service. 00:04:46.759 --> 00:04:50.519 And so what they expected to be routine actually took a really long time. 00:04:51.019 --> 00:04:52.399 But the upshot was, 00:04:53.120 --> 00:04:55.079 Archelaus was crowned king. 00:04:55.319 --> 00:04:58.199 And he did return to Judea as king. 00:04:58.359 --> 00:05:03.959 And he came and he dealt very severely with those who opposed his claims. 00:05:03.959 --> 00:05:07.399 Do we hear the parallel? 00:05:07.839 --> 00:05:08.599 Hear what Jesus is doing? 00:05:08.819 --> 00:05:10.399 Now Jesus is not saying, 00:05:10.959 --> 00:05:13.000 my character is the same as Archelaus. 00:05:13.099 --> 00:05:13.779 Absolutely not. 00:05:13.819 --> 00:05:15.839 Because Archelaus was a terrible king, an awful king. 00:05:15.939 --> 00:05:16.899 And Jesus is a wonderful king. 00:05:17.339 --> 00:05:17.959 But he is saying, 00:05:18.459 --> 00:05:21.599 my circumstances follow that pattern. 00:05:22.079 --> 00:05:23.439 Follow that story and history. 00:05:24.399 --> 00:05:25.539 Now before we get to the story, 00:05:25.620 --> 00:05:27.379 why does Jesus tell it? 00:05:27.620 --> 00:05:29.839 So sometimes Jesus tells stories 00:05:29.839 --> 00:05:32.060 and we're not always invited to know what was the context. 00:05:32.060 --> 00:05:33.180 Why did he choose to say it? 00:05:33.199 --> 00:05:35.639 But here we are led to understand why. 00:05:36.300 --> 00:05:37.040 Verse 11, 00:05:37.920 --> 00:05:39.879 Jesus went on to tell them a parable 00:05:39.879 --> 00:05:42.259 because, two things, 00:05:42.620 --> 00:05:43.639 he was near Jerusalem 00:05:43.639 --> 00:05:46.420 and the people thought that the kingdom of God 00:05:46.420 --> 00:05:47.840 was going to appear at once. 00:05:47.920 --> 00:05:50.819 So he's coming to the climax of his journey to Jerusalem 00:05:50.819 --> 00:05:52.379 and the crowds are hoping, 00:05:52.840 --> 00:05:54.360 well, if Jesus is the Messiah King, 00:05:54.420 --> 00:05:56.120 then he's going to be crowned in glory. 00:05:56.439 --> 00:05:58.000 His kingdom is going to come now. 00:05:58.259 --> 00:05:59.860 Our enemies are going to be defeated. 00:05:59.860 --> 00:06:02.699 We're going to live in a renewed promised land 00:06:02.699 --> 00:06:03.699 and it's going to be peaceful. 00:06:04.060 --> 00:06:08.180 And Jesus comes to say the reality is different. 00:06:09.879 --> 00:06:13.819 Now he has said to them that his kingdom is now. 00:06:13.980 --> 00:06:15.160 We've heard that on the journey. 00:06:15.280 --> 00:06:19.960 For example, in chapter 17 and verse 21, 00:06:20.199 --> 00:06:21.639 nor will people say of the kingdom, 00:06:21.840 --> 00:06:22.980 here it is or there it is 00:06:22.980 --> 00:06:26.020 because the kingdom of God is in your midst. 00:06:26.019 --> 00:06:28.279 So he's quite happy to say, yes, the kingdom is now. 00:06:28.639 --> 00:06:31.139 But he also invites us to recognize 00:06:31.139 --> 00:06:33.399 the kingdom has not fully yet come. 00:06:33.879 --> 00:06:36.939 It will not be final glory right away. 00:06:38.039 --> 00:06:41.359 So just like every king, Jesus will ascend, 00:06:42.599 --> 00:06:43.819 though in the first instance, 00:06:43.979 --> 00:06:46.799 Jesus will ascend across 00:06:46.799 --> 00:06:51.519 before ascending to the throne of glory. 00:06:51.519 --> 00:06:54.399 When Jesus arrives in Jerusalem, 00:06:54.699 --> 00:06:56.439 he will be crowned, 00:06:57.519 --> 00:06:59.240 but it will be a crown of thorns, 00:06:59.560 --> 00:07:02.379 not a crown of gold that he will wear. 00:07:03.139 --> 00:07:06.240 He will be greeted by great crowds, 00:07:06.439 --> 00:07:08.399 but those crowds will turn and cry, 00:07:08.579 --> 00:07:09.719 crucify him. 00:07:10.500 --> 00:07:12.539 We have no king but Caesar. 00:07:12.540 --> 00:07:16.600 He will win a victory, 00:07:16.920 --> 00:07:19.220 but that will be a spiritual victory 00:07:19.220 --> 00:07:21.319 over Satan and sin and death 00:07:21.319 --> 00:07:25.140 by his sacrificial death on the cross. 00:07:26.840 --> 00:07:28.200 So he needs them to know 00:07:28.200 --> 00:07:29.680 that the reality is different. 00:07:30.460 --> 00:07:31.840 So let's follow the king's story. 00:07:31.960 --> 00:07:34.820 Verse 12, we have a king who departs. 00:07:34.860 --> 00:07:37.820 A man of noble birth went to a distant country 00:07:37.820 --> 00:07:40.620 to have himself appointed king and then to return. 00:07:40.620 --> 00:07:42.720 And so the idea of going to a distant country 00:07:42.720 --> 00:07:45.480 implies this is going to take a while. 00:07:45.620 --> 00:07:47.540 There's going to be delay. 00:07:48.220 --> 00:07:49.300 Jesus teaches that. 00:07:49.379 --> 00:07:50.519 His kingdom is not coming. 00:07:50.819 --> 00:07:52.519 His return is not immediate. 00:07:54.420 --> 00:07:56.019 His authority is clear, though. 00:07:56.379 --> 00:07:58.060 The end of the story is never in doubt. 00:07:58.160 --> 00:07:59.160 He is going to be crowned 00:07:59.160 --> 00:08:00.420 and he is going to return. 00:08:02.100 --> 00:08:05.540 Jesus has been preparing his followers 00:08:05.540 --> 00:08:09.300 and us as we've listened for his departure. 00:08:09.300 --> 00:08:11.980 So ever since Jesus went up a mountain 00:08:11.980 --> 00:08:13.420 with James and Peter and John 00:08:13.420 --> 00:08:15.699 and shone with the glory of God, 00:08:16.020 --> 00:08:18.879 he spoke to them of his departure. 00:08:20.040 --> 00:08:21.020 He was going to leave. 00:08:21.300 --> 00:08:24.500 His departure involved his suffering and his death. 00:08:25.400 --> 00:08:27.420 And it involved his resurrection. 00:08:27.680 --> 00:08:29.939 And it involved his ascension 00:08:29.939 --> 00:08:32.220 to the throne of heaven. 00:08:33.419 --> 00:08:35.100 Now Jesus knows the response 00:08:35.100 --> 00:08:36.860 of many to him as king. 00:08:36.860 --> 00:08:38.580 Verse 14, 00:08:38.680 --> 00:08:39.919 his subjects hated him 00:08:39.919 --> 00:08:41.180 and sent a delegation to say, 00:08:41.279 --> 00:08:43.120 we don't want this man to be our king. 00:08:43.940 --> 00:08:45.320 And so we've seen on the journey 00:08:45.320 --> 00:08:46.480 and we'll see at the cross 00:08:46.480 --> 00:08:48.200 that he is the perfect king 00:08:48.200 --> 00:08:49.159 of perfect love, 00:08:49.220 --> 00:08:50.960 of absolute authority, 00:08:52.019 --> 00:08:53.300 of the kingdom and the glory of God 00:08:53.300 --> 00:08:54.180 that he brings. 00:08:54.860 --> 00:08:56.560 And yet he was rejected 00:08:56.560 --> 00:08:59.200 and he is rejected 00:08:59.200 --> 00:09:01.340 and he will be rejected 00:09:01.340 --> 00:09:03.000 by many throughout history. 00:09:05.400 --> 00:09:06.420 Sad reality. 00:09:07.460 --> 00:09:08.940 So the king departs. 00:09:09.860 --> 00:09:10.980 As the king departs, 00:09:11.020 --> 00:09:12.460 we also discover in verse 13 00:09:12.460 --> 00:09:13.800 that the king commands, 00:09:14.700 --> 00:09:15.780 he called ten of his servants 00:09:15.780 --> 00:09:16.879 and gave them ten minas. 00:09:16.980 --> 00:09:18.140 Put this money to work 00:09:18.140 --> 00:09:19.060 until I come back. 00:09:19.140 --> 00:09:20.860 Again, there's those two elements, 00:09:20.980 --> 00:09:22.100 ten servants, ten minas. 00:09:22.180 --> 00:09:22.440 They're told, 00:09:22.820 --> 00:09:24.240 put my money to work 00:09:24.240 --> 00:09:27.680 and do that until I come back. 00:09:28.840 --> 00:09:30.580 So they are going to be working. 00:09:30.799 --> 00:09:38.980 who are going to be working for him 00:09:38.980 --> 00:09:41.320 while there will be others around them 00:09:41.320 --> 00:09:41.539 who say, 00:09:41.659 --> 00:09:43.060 we don't want him as king 00:09:43.060 --> 00:09:45.740 and we don't want to receive him 00:09:45.740 --> 00:09:46.539 or his message. 00:09:46.539 --> 00:09:48.279 So the kingdom will be opposed 00:09:48.279 --> 00:09:49.980 and the kingdom will grow. 00:09:51.139 --> 00:09:52.299 Do we recognize that? 00:09:52.299 --> 00:09:55.479 As true in our day as it was back then. 00:09:56.579 --> 00:09:57.899 So we have the same call. 00:09:58.019 --> 00:10:00.819 The church is to be doing the work of the king 00:10:00.819 --> 00:10:03.199 until the king's return. 00:10:03.259 --> 00:10:04.179 That's our is spiritual battle. 00:10:16.599 --> 00:10:17.819 Jesus prepares us for it, 00:10:18.219 --> 00:10:19.699 for us at that in the parable. 00:10:19.700 --> 00:10:21.980 So the king departs, 00:10:22.020 --> 00:10:22.540 the king commands. 00:10:22.900 --> 00:10:24.680 Then notice the king returns, 00:10:25.080 --> 00:10:25.600 verse 15. 00:10:26.280 --> 00:10:27.740 He was made king, 00:11:20.720 --> 00:11:22.059 and ultimate victory 00:11:22.059 --> 00:11:23.860 over all the forces of evil, 00:11:24.019 --> 00:11:25.360 and God will dwell 00:11:25.360 --> 00:11:26.679 with his
