lesson. 00:02:39.680 --> 00:02:41.759 The difference between a parable and a fable 00:02:41.759 --> 00:02:45.979 is a fable usually uses, like, animals as its main characters, 00:02:46.519 --> 00:02:50.659 but a parable usually uses people as their main characters. 00:02:51.659 --> 00:02:56.359 And Jesus was the parable speaker extraordinaire. 00:02:56.579 --> 00:02:58.919 He is well known for his parables. 00:02:59.019 --> 00:02:59.899 Maybe you remember this one. 00:03:00.180 --> 00:03:02.439 The parable of the treasure hidden in the field. 00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:03.719 It's Matthew 13, 44. 00:03:03.939 --> 00:03:05.500 There's a guy that goes out in the field, 00:03:05.659 --> 00:03:07.219 and he's digging in the field, 00:03:07.219 --> 00:03:09.079 and ding, ding, ding, he hits something, 00:03:09.219 --> 00:03:10.479 and he finds treasure. 00:03:10.479 --> 00:03:12.579 And then Jesus is very clear. 00:03:13.280 --> 00:03:16.299 In his joy, he goes and sells all that he has 00:03:16.299 --> 00:03:20.500 in order to make that parcel of land and treasure his own. 00:03:21.459 --> 00:03:24.679 It's a parable of the kingdom of God about finding salvation. 00:03:25.639 --> 00:03:27.159 Maybe you're familiar with Luke 10, 00:03:27.259 --> 00:03:28.699 the parable of the Good Samaritan. 00:03:29.479 --> 00:03:31.919 It teaches us what a neighbor is, really. 00:03:31.919 --> 00:03:35.859 Maybe you've heard Luke 15, 00:03:36.219 --> 00:03:37.839 the parable of the prodigal son. 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:39.919 There's a reference to it in one of the songs we sang. 00:03:40.339 --> 00:03:42.159 I mean, we're all prodigals, right? 00:03:43.019 --> 00:03:45.679 And our great God is a father who's waiting 00:03:45.679 --> 00:03:47.359 and then runs to us. 00:03:48.959 --> 00:03:51.699 The parable of the soils in Mark chapter 4, 00:03:52.239 --> 00:03:55.799 where this sower sows the seed, 00:03:55.800 --> 00:03:58.020 and it's the word of the kingdom. humanity and salvation, 00:04:21.040 --> 00:04:21.879 the kingdom of God. 00:04:21.879 --> 00:04:24.839 So the parable of the tenants 00:04:24.839 --> 00:04:27.719 is a parable made up by Jesus 00:04:27.719 --> 00:04:30.139 to teach a lesson. 00:04:32.719 --> 00:04:34.980 One of the things about reading our Bibles 00:04:34.980 --> 00:04:39.199 is that sometimes we get bored reading our Bibles. 00:04:40.899 --> 00:04:43.459 And one of the solutions to Bible reading boredom 00:04:43.459 --> 00:04:46.899 is asking a lot of questions, to be curious. 00:04:48.180 --> 00:04:50.000 So let's ask some questions this morning 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:51.100 of the parable of the tenants. 00:04:51.879 --> 00:04:53.079 We're going to ask, 00:04:53.680 --> 00:04:55.399 when did Jesus speak Well, true. 00:06:11.199 --> 00:06:12.879 But the question I'm asking is more, 00:06:13.120 --> 00:06:14.899 when in the gospel of Mark 00:06:14.899 --> 00:06:17.479 did Jesus speak this parable? 00:06:17.480 --> 00:06:20.600 Well, it is towards the end. 00:06:22.140 --> 00:06:22.660 True. 00:06:23.840 --> 00:06:26.660 There's a word in the gospel of Mark 00:06:26.660 --> 00:06:29.920 that gets repeated 41 times. 00:06:29.920 --> 00:06:32.439 It's the word immediately. 00:06:34.060 --> 00:06:35.960 In terms of the New Testament, 00:06:37.600 --> 00:06:40.860 immediately shows up 51 times, 00:06:40.960 --> 00:06:41.560 including Mark. 00:06:41.640 --> 00:06:43.680 So this is the 80% use 00:06:43.680 --> 00:06:45.759 of the word immediately 00:06:45.759 --> 00:06:47.040 is in the gospel of Mark. 00:06:49.980 --> 00:06:51.759 And it's not distributed evenly 00:06:51.759 --> 00:06:53.400 in the gospel of Mark. 00:06:54.580 --> 00:06:57.200 The first half of the gospel of Mark, 00:06:57.340 --> 00:06:59.900 the word immediately shows up 30 times. 00:07:00.460 --> 00:07:01.000 Do you know what that means? 00:07:02.120 --> 00:07:03.100 When you're reading through 00:07:03.100 thing to the next. 00:07:09.580 --> 00:07:10.939 And then in chapter 8, 00:07:11.720 --> 00:07:15.060 immediately stops showing up 00:07:15.060 --> 00:07:15.680 as frequently. 00:07:17.060 --> 00:07:19.740 In fact, in chapters 8 through 11, 00:07:19.840 --> 00:07:20.939 it shows up five times. 00:07:21.120 --> 00:07:23.139 In chapters 12 through 16, 00:07:23.259 --> 00:07:24.560 it shows up is designed to 00:07:56.279 --> 00:07:58.060 start to emphasize 00:07:58.060 --> 00:07:59.139 what you're reading. 00:08:01.759 --> 00:08:04.419 And that's where this parable falls. 00:08:05.379 --> 00:08:06.000 Chapter 12. 00:08:07.539 --> 00:08:10.699 This is a climactic parable. 00:08:12.139 --> 00:08:14.259 It's accumulative, 00:08:14.759 --> 00:08:15.539 cumulating. 00:08:15.540 --> 00:08:18.140 This is going to be 00:08:18.140 --> 00:08:19.400 a confrontational parable. 00:08:21.100 --> 00:08:22.319 So when did Jesus speak 00:08:22.319 --> 00:08:22.879 this parable? 00:08:23.280 --> 00:08:24.700 Well, towards the end of his life, 00:08:24.800 --> 00:08:25.819 he will see where 00:08:25.819 --> 00:08:26.540 in just a second. 00:08:27.939 --> 00:08:28.960 But it's significant. taking place. 00:08:52.500 --> 00:08:53.539 And if you look up 00:08:53.539 --> 00:08:55.519 into chapter 11, verse 27, 00:08:56.339 --> 00:08:57.439 you're given a huge clue 00:08:57.439 --> 00:08:58.279 of where this is happening. 00:08:59.240 --> 00:08:59.939 First is this, 00:09:00.039 --> 00:09:00.819 and they came again 00:09:00.819 --> 00:09:01.539 into Jerusalem. 00:09:02.079 --> 00:09:03.139 It's they as Jesus 00:09:03.139 --> 00:09:03.919 and his disciples. 00:09:04.120 --> 00:09:04.980 They're going in and out 00:09:04.980 --> 00:09:05.559 of Jerusalem. 00:09:06.419 --> 00:09:07.939 And they've come back in. 00:09:08.059 --> 00:09:09.019 And then we read, 00:09:09.019 --> 00:09:10.199 and as he was walking 00:09:10.199 --> 00:09:10.860 in the temple, 00:09:12.419 --> 00:09:13.759 the chief priests, 00:09:14.799 --> 00:09:15.480 scribes, and elders 00:09:15.480 --> 00:09:16.799 come up and say something to him. 00:09:17.059 --> 00:09:18.600 So not only in Jerusalem, 00:09:18.799 --> 00:09:21.539 which is kind of the center 00:09:21.539 --> 00:09:22.539 of Israel, 00:09:23.659 --> 00:09:25.919 he's in the temple. 00:09:26.740 --> 00:09:27.960 So he's going to speak 00:09:27.960 --> 00:09:30.319 this parable in the temple 00:09:30.319 --> 00:09:31.840 in Jerusalem. 00:09:32.259 --> 00:09:33.120 Now here's what you need 00:09:33.120 --> 00:09:33.500 --> 00:10:18.240 he goes right into the temple. 00:10:18.419 --> 00:10:19.220 He's there late. 00:10:19.480 --> 00:10:20.299 He looks around 00:10:20.299 --> 00:10:21.639 and he leaves without a word. 00:10:21.799 --> 00:10:22.299 Do you know why 00:10:22.299 --> 00:10:23.340 he leaves without a word? 00:10:23.899 --> 00:10:24.740 Because he sees 00:10:24.740 --> 00:10:25.419 what's going on
