Jesus in this prayer. 00:00:33.939 --> 00:00:41.320 He expressed his longing to be restored to the glory that he had with God the Father before the world began. 00:00:42.460 --> 00:00:47.760 He told the Father that he had completed the work that the Father had given him to do up until this point. 00:00:49.219 --> 00:00:52.299 Jesus has more to say in this prayer to the Father. 00:00:52.299 --> 00:00:56.380 This morning, we're going to hear more about the work that Jesus has finished. 00:00:56.380 --> 00:00:59.219 We'll hear what else is on Jesus' heart. 00:00:59.960 --> 00:01:04.980 And 00:01:21.580 So we're at John chapter 17, verse 6. 00:01:22.080 --> 00:01:27.300 And as I was studying this earlier this week, I felt like I was trying to come up with a metaphor for this. so much in here that's wonderful. 00:01:36.180 --> 00:01:42.520 And then the more I got into it and was looking at the different themes and the things that come up in here, 00:01:42.580 --> verse 9 once more. 00:02:15.240 --> 00:02:18.199 I pray for them, for those you have given me. 00:02:18.199 --> 00:02:25.479 And I mentioned this idea last week, but here again, there's quite a lot of emphasis on this reality. 00:02:25.619 --> 00:02:30.019 This thing that was probably unperceived by Jesus' disciples. 00:02:30.439 --> 00:02:34.259 About how each one of them has been given to the Father. 00:02:35.039 --> 00:02:36.979 Given by the Father to Jesus. 00:02:38.439 --> 00:02:43.699 And as we see here in verse 6, there's even a sense in which they belonged to God before they were see in this part of 00:05:16.339 --> 00:05:17.399 Jesus' prayer. 00:05:17.500 --> 00:05:19.399 The first one is in verses 6 to 8. 00:05:19.519 --> 00:05:23.879 Jesus talks to the Father about the work that he has finished. 00:05:24.279 --> 00:05:26.119 And the result of that work. 00:05:26.959 --> 00:05:28.519 Then in verses 9 to 11. 00:05:28.659 --> 00:05:31.939 Jesus prepares to make his request 00:07:07.619 This is one of the primary purposes and missions of Jesus. 00:07:08.459 --> 00:07:11.759 To make the Father known to us. 00:07:13.019 --> 00:07:16.739 If we look all the way back to John's introduction to the gospel. 00:07:17.419 --> 00:07:19.059 Chapter 1, verse 18. 00:07:19.179 --> 00:07:21.479 What did John say at the beginning of this account? 00:07:21.719 --> 00:07:22.500 He said, 00:07:22.759 --> 00:07:24.459 No one has ever seen God, 00:07:24.719 --> 00:07:26.579 but the one and only Son, 00:07:26.839 --> 00:07:28.579 who is himself God, 00:07:28.579 --> 00:07:31.419 and is in closest relationship with the Father. 00:07:31.579 --> 00:07:34.439 He has made him known. 00:07:36.199 --> 00:07:37.959 That's what Jesus came to do. 00:07:38.800 --> 00:07:42.860 It's not as though we knew nothing about God before Jesus came. 00:07:42.860 --> 00:07:46.100 I find the author of Hebrews very helpful here. 00:07:46.160 --> 00:07:48.300 This is what he says in his writing. 00:07:49.199 --> 00:07:50.379 The letter to the Hebrews, 00:07:50.620 --> 00:07:52.620 chapter 1, verse 1 to 3. 00:07:53.360 --> 00:07:53.860 He writes, 00:07:53.960 --> 00:07:54.580 In the past, 00:07:54.720 --> 00:07:57.480 God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets. 00:07:57.480 --> 00:08:09.200 The Son, he says, 00:08:09.200 --> 00:08:12.460 is the radiance of God's glory. 00:08:13.040 --> 00:08:17.439 And the exact representation of his being. 00:08:17.439 --> 00:08:20.540 So, Jesus brings a much fuller, 00:08:20.600 --> 00:08:24.319 a much greater revelation of the Father to us. 00:08:24.920 --> 00:08:27.120 He represents the Father exactly 00:08:27.120 --> 00:08:30.300 beyond what the prophets of old could do. 00:08:31.180 --> 00:08:33.039 They were spokesmen for God in the past, 00:08:33.159 --> 00:08:37.279 but Jesus is the exact representation of God's being 00:08:37.279 --> 00:08:40.559 here among us in human flesh and blood. 00:08:40.559 --> 00:08:42.739 So, Jesus says, 00:08:42.959 --> 00:08:44.519 I have done what you gave me to do. 00:08:44.599 --> 00:08:47.399 I have revealed your name to them. 00:08:47.579 --> 00:08:49.659 I have revealed you to them. 00:08:50.639 --> 00:08:54.319 Well, there's a second work that Jesus has just finished doing, 00:08:54.679 --> 00:08:55.799 and it's related. 00:08:57.139 --> 00:08:57.739 Verse 8, 00:08:58.239 --> 00:08:58.939 Jesus says, 00:08:59.199 --> 00:09:02.559 I gave them the words you gave me. 00:09:02.559 --> 00:09:06.319 I gave them the words you gave me. 00:09:06.399 --> 00:09:08.599 This has also been one of the primary purposes 00:09:08.599 --> 00:09:10.059 or missions of Jesus, 00:09:10.439 --> 00:09:11.919 to give words, 00:09:12.659 --> 00:09:14.939 to speak to his disciples. 00:09:16.119 --> 00:09:17.899 And notice the source of these words. 00:09:19.019 --> 00:09:21.319 Jesus has been speaking to his disciples 00:09:21.319 --> 00:09:24.619 the very words that God has given him to say. 00:09:25.359 --> 00:09:26.839 We've talked about this before, 00:09:26.959 --> 00:09:28.079 but it's worth saying again. 00:09:28.579 --> 00:09:31.199 Jesus doesn't teach his own material. 00:09:31.200 --> 00:09:33.320 In everything he says, 00:09:33.800 --> 00:09:35.240 he functions like a prophet, 00:09:36.120 --> 00:09:40.420 relaying the very words that God has to say to people. 00:09:40.840 --> 00:09:43.560 We saw this back in John 7, verse 16, 00:09:43.660 --> 00:09:44.620 when Jesus answered, 00:09:45.140 --> 00:09:46.840 My teaching is not my own. 00:09:47.379 --> 00:09:49.620 It comes from the one who sent me. 00:09:50.120 --> 00:09:52.640 We heard it again in John 8, verse 28. 00:09:53.540 --> 00:09:54.900 Jesus said, 00:09:56.340 --> 00:09:58.560 There, when you have lifted up the Son of Man, 00:09:58.559 --> 00:10:01.179 then you will know that I am he, 00:10:01.279 --> 00:10:03.219 and that I do nothing on my own, 00:10:03.559 --> 00:10:06.739 but speak just what the Father has taught me. 00:10:07.479 --> 00:10:09.379 And we heard it again in John 14, 00:10:09.779 --> 00:10:11.159 earlier this same evening, 00:10:11.659 --> 00:10:12.500 verse 24. 00:10:13.559 --> 00:10:14.059 He said, 00:10:14.199 --> 00:10:15.619 Anyone who does not love me 00:10:15.619 --> 00:10:16.879 will not obey my teaching. 00:10:17.279 --> 00:10:19.339 These words you hear are not my own. 00:10:20.119 --> 00:10:22.679 They belong to the Father who sent me. 00:10:22.679 --> 00:10:25.399 So Jesus now in this prayer 00:10:25.399 --> 00:10:27.799 is kind of reporting to the Father. 00:10:28.319 --> 00:10:31.259 I've finished the work that you gave me to do. 00:10:31.359 --> 00:10:32.899 I've given them your words, 00:10:33.539 --> 00:10:35.419 the words that you gave me to say to them. 00:10:36.359 --> 00:10:38.679 So we see two types of work 00:10:38.679 --> 00:10:41.059 that Jesus has finished doing. 00:10:41.159 --> 00:10:44.279 The work of revealing the Father to his disciples, 00:10:44.739 --> 00:10:48.419 and the work of giving them the Father's words. 00:10:48.419 --> 00:10:52.019 And then we notice throughout this first section 00:10:52.019 --> 00:10:54.319 that Jesus kind of reports to the Father 00:10:54.319 --> 00:10:58.439 about how the disciples have responded to all this. 00:10:59.279 --> 00:12:03.319 This is what the Father and the Son 00:12:03.319 --> 00:12:04.479 have been longing for. 00:12:05.879 --> 00:12:08.179 Jesus was sent by the Father into the world 00:12:08.179 --> 00:12:10.740 to teach and speak on the Father's behalf, 00:12:10.799 --> 00:12:11.599 as we just said, 00:12:11.600 --> 00:12:12.960 and the report is good. 00:12:12.960 --> 00:12:15.019 These men have been holding fast 00:12:15.019 --> 00:12:18.420 to the things that they have been hearing from Jesus. 00:12:18.980 --> 00:12:20.540 And let's remember, 00:12:20.659 --> 00:12:23.740 it hasn't been easy to hold fast to the words of Jesus. 00:12:23.860 --> 00:12:26.000 It's been getting harder and harder and harder 00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:28.040 as the story has gone on. 00:12:28.740 -->
