They've come out of this culture that is probably the most immoral and out-of-control culture that I've ever read about in the known world. 00:05:27.639 --> 00:05:28.720 It was full of idols. 00:05:29.379 --> 00:05:30.780 It was full of bad influences. 00:05:31.340 --> 00:05:32.879 The church had these habits. 00:05:33.899 --> 00:05:35.980 I know none of us have these habits, but the church had these habits. 00:05:35.980 --> 00:05:40.439 And these habits were stuff like pride and self-centeredness and arrogance and selfishness. 00:05:41.060 --> 00:05:46.400 And what happened is as the church was going on this journey, these things just kept coming up and coming up and coming up. 00:05:46.640 --> 00:05:53.300 And when these self-centeredness and selfishness comes up in chapters, we've been reading them in 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 today. 00:05:53.600 --> 00:05:57.660 What you see is a self-centeredness and this pride just starts to fracture the church. 00:05:58.480 --> 00:06:02.620 Instead of being a family, instead of being a community, they're just this group of individuals. 00:06:02.620 --> 00:06:11.100 And it's interesting because in this passage, in chapter 1, verses 5 through 7, Paul begins the book and he praises us. 00:06:11.180 --> 00:06:11.980 He praises them. 00:06:12.500 --> 00:06:14.199 He says, man, you guys have your act together. 00:06:14.639 --> 00:06:15.620 You're full of knowledge. 00:06:15.759 --> 00:06:16.680 You know how to use your gifts. 00:06:16.800 --> 00:06:17.639 You're doing really well. 00:06:17.860 --> 00:06:20.660 But here in this passage, Paul says, no. 00:06:21.699 --> 00:06:22.959 You don't know what you're doing. 00:06:23.079 --> 00:06:24.240 You don't know how to use your gifts. 00:06:24.540 --> 00:06:25.740 There's this lack of knowledge. 00:06:25.840 --> 00:06:26.600 There's this misunderstanding. 00:06:26.600 --> 00:06:33.480 And so if you look at verses 1 through 3, Paul begins to set out his argument for us, for the church. 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:36.660 And what he says to them and what he says to us is this. 00:06:37.520 --> 00:06:41.420 He says there are two types of spirituality in all the world. had come out of this crazy culture that was out of control. 00:07:25.099 --> 00:07:33.079 I mean, it wasn't too long before ago, it wasn't too long ago that all the people in the church were worshiping in pagan temples. 00:07:34.539 --> 00:07:39.779 It wasn't too long ago that all the people were involved in immoral acts as they came into their life. 00:07:39.779 --> 00:07:44.939 It wasn't too long ago that people entered into their temple and they asked questions like this. 00:07:45.439 --> 00:07:46.779 Does this make me feel good? 00:07:48.219 --> 00:07:49.479 Does this make me happy? 00:07:50.619 --> 00:07:53.779 Do I feel like I deserve this? 00:07:54.399 --> 00:07:56.059 Am I experiencing good things? 00:07:57.000 --> 00:07:59.819 It wasn't too long ago that the people in Paul's church in Corinth, 00:08:00.339 --> 00:08:03.719 everything they asked about and everything they talked about centered on themselves. 00:08:04.839 --> 00:08:07.119 They were the center of their focus. 00:08:07.120 --> 00:08:13.639 And listen to me here, guys, because this is, in Paul's day, in an ancient world, 00:08:13.759 --> 00:08:17.500 people would go to temples and they would experience miracles. 00:08:19.560 --> 00:08:23.519 I mean, they would enter into a temple and they would see incredible things. 00:08:24.600 --> 00:08:27.180 They would enter into temples and they would see visions. 00:08:28.519 --> 00:08:31.720 And people would talk about the future and people would talk about prophecy. 00:08:31.720 --> 00:08:36.120 They would enter into the temples where the sacrifices were happening, where the orgies were happening, 00:08:36.379 --> 00:08:37.420 and people would be healed. 00:08:38.779 --> 00:08:42.560 They would enter into the temple and people would see other people speaking in tongues. 00:08:43.279 --> 00:08:44.960 In many different strange languages. 00:08:45.440 --> 00:08:48.080 And they felt like power came upon them. 00:08:49.759 --> 00:08:53.680 And when they came into these temples, this power came upon them and it captivated everybody. 00:08:53.679 --> 00:08:55.939 And they felt great. 00:08:57.239 --> 00:08:58.879 I mean, there's a passage in Acts 8. 00:08:59.399 --> 00:09:02.739 As the disciples are going around and they're sharing the gospel, there's this guy named Simon. 00:09:03.459 --> 00:09:04.120 He's a magician. 00:09:04.899 --> 00:09:09.219 And it says that he actually had power and he was doing all of these miracles. 00:09:09.359 --> 00:09:13.379 And this power was coming from these demonic sources that were invading his life. 00:09:14.019 --> 00:09:17.039 And we're told that all of Samaria was captivated by this guy. 00:09:17.719 --> 00:09:19.839 I mean, this guy was doing all these miracles and it was amazing. 00:09:19.840 --> 00:09:22.840 And he was claiming to be great and everybody was following him. 00:09:24.200 --> 00:09:27.220 And then in Acts 16, we're told again, there's this slave girl. 00:09:28.160 --> 00:09:29.740 And she's possessed by a demon. 00:09:30.660 --> 00:09:32.620 And she's telling everybody his fortune. 00:09:33.600 --> 00:09:35.240 And she's telling everybody what's going to happen. 00:09:35.660 --> 00:09:37.019 And everybody is following her. 00:09:37.220 --> 00:09:39.540 And everybody knows where this power is coming from. 00:09:39.860 --> 00:09:43.200 And what Paul is saying to you and I, and he's saying to the church of Corinthian, 00:09:43.519 --> 00:09:45.019 is that everybody is spiritual. 00:09:45.019 --> 00:09:49.939 Everyone is spiritual. 00:09:51.379 --> 00:09:54.360 The question is, where is your spiritual power coming from? 00:09:55.480 --> 00:09:58.799 Where are you receiving that spirituality from? 00:10:00.100 --> is, if you want to test where your spirituality is coming from, 00:10:18.139 --> 00:10:22.400 you want to test where the power in you is coming from, all you need to do is take an oath. 00:10:23.560 --> 00:10:27.300 And this oath was something that everybody did every day in Corinth. 00:10:27.700 --> 00:10:28.759 And this is what you would do. 00:10:29.200 --> 00:10:33.620 You'd get out of your house, you'd go to work, and as you walk into the marketplace to do your work, 00:10:33.680 --> 00:10:36.900 to do your business, to buy your goods, you would see a statue of Caesar there. 00:10:36.899 --> 00:10:41.259 And you'd take a little incense, and you would burn it in front of Caesar, and you would say, 00:10:41.860 --> 00:10:43.600 Caesar is Lord. 00:10:44.759 --> 00:10:46.959 And if you didn't do that, you couldn't enter into the marketplace. 00:10:47.159 --> 00:10:48.659 If you didn't do that, you couldn't do work. 00:10:49.299 --> 00:10:51.559 If you couldn't do that, you couldn't buy your goods. 00:10:51.840 --> 00:10:52.939 And so everybody did this. 00:10:52.940 --> 00:10:59.040 And Paul says in his passage, you can tell what kind of spirit controls us by what we say about Jesus. 00:11:00.620 --> 00:11:05.260 He says that in the Gospels, that when people came to Christ, and even when the demons came to Christ, 00:11:05.600 --> 00:11:09.080 often the demons would say things like, well, Jesus, he is the Son of God. 00:11:10.440 --> 00:11:14.660 And sometimes the demons would come before the Lord, and they would talk about him to other people, 00:11:14.720 --> 00:11:16.820 and they would say, Jesus, he is the Holy One of God. 00:11:16.820 --> 00:11:23.740 But what you never see in the Gospels is a demon saying, Jesus is Lord. 00:11:25.120 --> 00:11:26.200 It never happens. 00:11:26.920 --> 00:11:28.320 Because they had another Lord. 00:11:28.420 --> 00:11:30.400 They received their power from someplace else. 00:11:31.400 --> 00:11:34.120 say that Jesus is your master? 00:11:59.459 --> 00:12:02.599 Can you say that Jesus is your patron that we talked about last week? 00:12:03.000 --> 00:12:05.139 Can you say that Jesus owns you? and control your life. 00:12:16.240 --> 00:12:18.840 Now, these aren't just words that Paul's talking about here. 00:12:19.379 --> 00:12:22.159 But what he's actually talking about is not just our
