00:03:47.039 --> 00:03:52.879 But he that keepeth the law happy is he. 00:03:52.879 --> 00:03:58.840 And to rightly understand Proverbs 29.18 is to see 00:03:58.840 --> 00:04:01.060 that the Hebrew word for vision, 00:04:01.799 --> 00:04:05.680 more closely got at with the ESV translation, 00:04:05.859 --> 00:04:07.019 prophetic vision, 00:04:07.599 --> 00:04:11.199 means a word from God. 00:04:11.199 --> 00:04:15.560 So without a word from God, 00:04:15.759 --> 00:04:18.879 the people cast off restraint. 00:04:19.759 --> 00:04:22.879 Without a word from God to give guidance to the people of God, 00:04:22.939 --> 00:04:25.240 the people of God throw off restraint. 00:04:25.339 --> 00:04:26.139 They don't know where to go. 00:04:26.219 --> 00:04:27.019 They don't know what to do. 00:04:27.319 --> 00:04:29.019 And we know that's what it means 00:04:29.019 --> 00:04:31.000 because the rest of the verse says, 00:04:31.240 --> 00:04:34.439 But blessed, happy is he who keeps the 00:06:08.440 --> 00:06:09.960 So again, our text is Acts 13. 00:06:10.960 --> 00:06:13.080 Verses 13-43. 00:06:13.079 --> 00:06:19.439 Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos 00:06:19.439 --> 00:06:22.159 and came to Perga in Pamphylia. 00:06:22.819 --> 00:06:25.939 And John left them and returned to Jerusalem. 00:06:26.659 --> 00:06:29.799 But they went on from Perga and came to Antioch in Pisidia. 00:06:30.519 --> 00:06:34.000 And on the Sabbath day, they went into the synagogue and sat down. 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:37.459 After the reading from the law and the prophets, 00:06:37.639 then down to Salamis. 00:11:22.100 --> 00:11:23.659 They traveled all about the island of Cyprus 00:11:23.659 --> 00:11:24.820 preaching the gospel of God. 00:11:25.060 --> 00:11:26.220 They went to Paphos, 00:11:26.279 --> 00:11:28.139 where they were able to speak the gospel 00:11:28.139 --> 00:11:30.139 to the governor and he believed. 00:11:30.840 --> 00:11:32.700 They've now left from there. are eventually heading. 00:11:58.299 --> 00:12:01.740 So you can see that John Mark leaves them. 00:12:02.100 --> 00:12:04.659 Luke does not tell us ever exactly why, 00:12:05.059 --> 00:12:06.899 although we get some evidence later on 00:12:06.899 --> 00:12:09.220 as there's a dispute between Barnabas and Paul 00:12:09.220 --> 00:12:11.259 about whether or not John Mark should go with them. 00:12:11.259 --> 00:12:14.200 If you recall this, Paul really doesn't want them to go 00:12:14.200 --> 00:12:16.600 because he had left them. 00:12:17.220 --> 00:12:19.679 And the assumption that's made is that he left 00:12:19.679 --> 00:12:22.319 because the journey that they're about to take 00:12:22.319 --> 00:12:24.340 is an extremely dangerous one. 00:12:24.840 --> 00:12:28.539 So you're going to make this journey from Perga to Antioch, 00:12:28.659 --> 00:12:30.120 which was about 100 miles, 00:12:30.539 --> 00:12:34.259 had two really, really hard river crossings, 00:12:34.419 --> 00:12:35.620 rivers that often flooded, 00:12:35.899 --> 00:12:37.419 had lots of rapids in them. 00:12:37.419 --> 00:12:40.019 They weren't taking boats across. 00:12:40.979 --> 00:12:43.899 They also had to travel across the Taurus Mountains. 00:12:44.179 --> 00:12:46.819 The path actually went up on the cliff sides, 00:12:47.120 --> 00:12:48.019 very treacherous. 00:12:48.379 --> 00:12:51.039 And this area was known for bandits 00:12:51.039 --> 00:12:53.419 that lived in the area and would ransack people. 00:12:53.860 --> 00:12:56.319 In fact, a bunch of the Roman conquerors 00:12:56.319 --> 00:12:59.039 had a great deal of problem with these bandits in this area. 00:12:59.139 --> 00:13:00.819 It was kind of a stronghold still, 00:13:01.159 --> 00:13:02.240 even against Rome, 00:13:02.360 --> 00:13:05.500 and they liked to ransack Roman travelers. 00:13:05.500 --> 00:13:08.100 I don't think that they were honorable men at all, 00:13:08.179 --> 00:13:10.259 but in my mind, I think of Robin Hood a little. 00:13:10.600 --> 00:13:11.679 When I think of these men, 00:13:12.340 --> 00:13:16.000 it was a dangerous, dangerous place for them to travel. 00:13:16.340 --> 00:13:18.480 And so likely, that's why. 00:13:18.620 --> 00:13:22.840 Likely, that's why John Mark turned around, 00:13:23.039 --> 00:13:25.379 said, I'm not for the danger that's about to happen, 00:13:25.480 --> 00:13:26.980 and went back to Jerusalem. 00:13:27.240 --> 00:13:31.419 But Paul and Barnabas, they press on. 00:13:31.419 --> 00:13:34.379 Paul's comments in 2 Corinthians 11, 00:13:34.699 --> 00:13:35.879 the first part of 26, 00:13:36.259 --> 00:13:38.019 are likely concerning this route. 00:13:38.159 --> 00:13:38.539 He says, 00:13:39.059 --> 00:13:40.019 On frequent journeys, 00:13:40.519 --> 00:13:41.939 in danger from rivers, 00:13:42.379 --> 00:13:43.819 danger from robbers, 00:13:43.899 --> 00:13:45.719 he goes on in verse 26, 00:13:45.839 --> 00:13:47.759 but likely, this crossing, 00:13:47.899 --> 00:13:49.919 which he did a multitude of times, 00:13:50.219 --> 00:13:51.439 is what he's referring to, 00:13:51.620 --> 00:13:54.559 the rivers and the danger from the robbers. 00:13:55.039 --> 00:13:58.099 They arrive in Antioch of Pisidia, 00:13:58.399 --> 00:13:59.599 and on the Sabbath day, 00:13:59.939 --> 00:14:01.139 they go into the synagogue, 00:14:01.579 --> 00:14:02.719 and they sit down. 00:14:02.779 --> 00:14:05.139 They go and join the worship in the synagogue 00:14:05.139 --> 00:14:06.639 on the Sabbath day. 00:14:06.859 --> 00:14:09.939 And we're going to see this as Paul's persistent habit. 00:14:10.279 --> 00:14:11.599 When he goes to a new place, 00:14:11.659 --> 00:14:12.339 to a new city, 00:14:12.479 --> 00:14:23.560 he started with the people 00:14:23.560 --> 00:14:24.640 who had a knowledge 00:14:24.640 --> 00:14:26.100 of the God he was talking about. 00:14:26.360 --> 00:14:27.640 They had the Old Testament Scriptures. 00:14:28.020 --> 00:14:29.360 They believed in God Creator. 00:14:29.540 --> 00:14:31.780 They believed they were the people of God. 00:14:31.840 --> 00:14:33.180 And it gave them a starting point 00:14:33.180 --> 00:14:35.420 to continue to tell that Gospel story to them. 00:14:35.540 --> 00:14:36.500 To see the fulfillment 00:14:36.500 --> 00:14:38.100 of all of those
