It lies at the heart of the whole story. Christmas is all about the extraordinary 00:02:00.259 --> 00:02:06.739 breaking into the ordinary. That's certainly the point that Luke is making in the passage that we're 00:02:06.739 --> 00:02:12.819 looking at this morning. So our first point this morning is this. Christmas comes to the ordinary. 00:02:13.960 --> 00:02:19.759 Christmas comes to the ordinary. In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of 00:02:19.759 --> 00:02:25.019 Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph of the house of David, 00:02:25.500 --> 00:02:32.500 and the virgin's name was Mary. So where's it all taking place? Nazareth. It's the Nazareth in 00:02:32.500 --> 00:02:38.419 Galilee in case there was any misunderstanding or confusion. And that Nazareth is an ordinary place 00:02:38.419 --> 00:02:43.719 if ever there was one. It says city here in the ESV translation because the Greek word, there is no 00:02:43.719 --> 00:02:51.120 Greek word for village in this sense. This is a rural backwater on a road between two seaports. 00:02:51.120 --> 00:02:59.500 It's a place so insignificant that when people discovered it was going to be the promised birth 00:02:59.500 --> 00:03:07.620 place of God's Messiah, it was said with surprise, can anything good come out of Nazareth? Nazareth? 00:03:08.219 --> 00:03:13.980 The backwater of backwaters? Surely if God was going to do something significant in the world, 00:03:14.060 --> 00:03:18.920 he would do it in a significant place like Jerusalem, the great city at the center of his purposes. 00:03:18.919 --> 00:03:27.459 No, no, he chose Galilee. Galilee was a place held in the highest content by Jews, and not just 00:03:27.459 --> 00:03:35.179 Galilee, but the unremarkable little backwater called Nazareth. Well, that's the place. Then we 00:03:35.179 --> 00:03:43.159 have Mary. Do you see initially she's just referred to as a virgin, verse 27. A point Luke repeats in 00:03:43.159 --> 00:03:48.899 verse 28 and verse 34. Now this will be a big deal, but initially all that tells us is that she 00:03:48.919 --> 00:03:55.579 is an insignificant woman. She's probably in her teens. She's got no husband. She's got no children, 00:03:55.579 --> 00:04:03.179 and in that culture that meant that she had no status. She is betrothed. That is, she is legally 00:04:03.179 --> 00:04:09.139 pledged to be married, but in case we think that this will elevate her status in some way, her fiancé, 00:04:09.219 --> 00:04:15.919 we're told, is hardly royalty. She's not Meghan Markle. He's just ordinary old Joe Davidson. 00:04:15.919 --> 00:04:22.819 Do you see that? That's what verse 27 tells us. Joseph from the family line of David. He's Joe 00:04:22.819 --> 00:04:31.879 Davidson. It's an ordinary place. It's an ordinary girl, and he's an ordinary man. There is nothing, 00:04:32.079 --> 00:04:39.120 nothing remarkable about this situation at all, and yet it is the starting point for some of the 00:04:39.120 --> 00:04:46.060 most extraordinary events in the history of the world. Here's the thing. Christmas tells us that 00:04:46.060 --> 00:04:55.579 God meets us in the ordinary. By calling Mary, God shows interest in, he shows his care for, his grace 00:04:55.579 --> 00:05:04.899 to the ordinary, the unimpressive, the weak, and the poor. This is very important. So much of what drives 00:05:04.899 --> 00:05:09.739 our world comes from our quest, the quest for significance that agitates in the human heart, 00:05:10.359 --> 00:05:14.479 the desire that we would be somebody, that we would be great, that people would look at us and think, 00:05:14.579 --> 00:05:21.019 there is a great person. There is an impressive person. We seek to look impressive and sound 00:05:21.019 --> 00:05:27.379 impressive. We just want to be impressive, because by being impressive, we earn favor in the world. 00:05:27.919 --> 00:05:34.379 How do we get ahead in the world? We do so by being impressive. We're drawn to impressive people. 00:05:34.899 --> 00:05:39.399 We talk about the fact that we know impressive people. We talk about how wealthy they are, 00:05:39.479 --> 00:05:44.459 how well-known they are, or how many jolly followers they have on social media. 00:05:46.339 --> 00:05:51.319 And we seek to appear that way. Is that not what one of the great things of social media is? 00:05:51.399 --> 00:05:56.859 About presenting yourself in such a way that you look impressive, that people will be drawn to you. 00:05:57.959 --> 00:06:02.620 Now, what invariably happens is we think, well, if that's the way we are, and if that is the way the 00:06:02.620 --> 00:06:10.579 world that we live in is, well, surely God probably feels the same. So God must be on the lookout for 00:06:10.579 --> 00:06:20.300 impressive people as well. That's not the case. God meets ordinary people in their ordinary lives 00:06:20.300 --> 00:06:25.139 doing ordinary things. This is one of the very important messages that we mustn't skip over about 00:06:25.139 --> 00:06:33.519 that first Christmas. You do not need to be anything more than ordinary to receive the favor of God. 00:06:35.099 --> 00:06:39.759 Our culture has created a kind of rat race where in order to be accepted, you have to speak and act 00:06:39.759 --> 00:06:44.219 in certain ways. It's the same with every in-group. There are all kinds of different in-groups in the 00:06:44.219 --> 00:06:48.979 culture, but every single one of them has a way that we have to behave, a way that we have to perform 00:06:48.980 --> 00:06:54.460 in order to be accepted. The language we use, the clothes we wear, the people that we mix with. 00:06:56.340 --> 00:07:00.300 God doesn't require you to be anything other than ordinary. 00:07:02.879 --> 00:07:06.580 Perhaps you need to hear this this morning. You need to be reminded of this for your own sake, 00:07:07.140 --> 00:07:13.840 because you feel that pressure to be impressive. You feel that driving you on, and you're trying 00:07:13.839 --> 00:07:19.719 desperately hard to be the kind of person that the in-crowd would choose to accept. You've set your 00:07:19.719 --> 00:07:25.139 sights on belonging to that group, and you desperately want to be there, and it is a punishing treadmill 00:07:25.139 --> 00:07:29.099 of achievement that you feel that you need to make in order to be accepted. 00:07:32.419 --> 00:07:38.259 You also recognize that perhaps there is a degree of acceptance in the crowd that you're happy in, 00:07:38.259 --> 00:07:43.579 but you know that you're faking it. You know that you're putting it on to some degree, 00:07:44.139 --> 00:07:49.319 because you know underneath it all you're really pretty ordinary. Here's the thing you need to know. 00:07:49.379 --> 00:07:56.920 It's not that way with God. bit of you that looks down on them. 00:08:49.379 --> 00:08:53.160 Well, whoever they are, you need to be reminded of this fact that whoever they are, 00:08:53.159 --> 00:08:59.139 they don't need to for those that society ignores and looks down on. 00:09:43.899 --> 00:09:53.699 But he does come into the ordinary in an extraordinary way. 00:09:54.439 --> 00:09:55.439 That's our second point. involves the extraordinary. 00:10:07.299 --> 00:10:11.339 First off, God sends Gabriel as his spokesman. 00:10:11.459 --> 00:10:13.479 Imagine what that must have been like for Mary. 00:10:14.539 --> 00:10:18.079 There she is in all her ordinariness, in her ordinary place, doing ordinary things, 00:10:18.199 --> 00:10:24.439 and the radiant glory of the angelic being comes to her and then speaks to her. 00:10:24.859 --> 00:10:27.179 This isn't your average afternoon in backwatersville, 00:10:27.559 --> 00:10:31.159 but there are two particular bits of the story that I want to highlight. 00:10:31.279 --> 00:10:34.439 The first is this, God's extraordinary promise. 00:10:35.439 --> 00:10:36.539 The extraordinary promise. 00:10:36.539 --> 00:10:40.699 See, Gabriel speaks into Mary's day to announce that God has chosen her. 00:10:41.279 --> 00:10:42.659 She will receive his grace. 00:10:43.419 --> 00:10:46.699 And to be clear, just to be clear, she is the object of his grace. 00:10:46.819 --> 00:10:48.000 She is not the source of it. 00:10:48.860 --> 00:10:53.899 Mary has no grace in herself, only the grace that she receives from God. 00:10:54.240 --> 00:10:57.120 But understandably, Mary is unsure of what is going on. 00:10:57.179 --> 00:10:59.539 29, she was greatly troubled at the saying 00:10:59.539 --> 00:11:03.240 and tried to discern what sort of greeting behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, 00:11:11.299 --> 00:11:13.000 and you shall call his name Jesus. 00:11:13.799 --> 00:11:17.399 He will be great and will be called the Son of the --> 00:11:25.980 and of his kingdom there will be no end. 00:11:25.980 --> 00:11:32.100 God promises Mary a son, a son who will be called Jesus. 00:11:32.580 --> 00:11:34.420 Jesus means the Lord is salvation, 00:11:34.600 --> 00:11:36.779 which actually wasn't an unusual name at the time. 00:11:36.860 --> 00:11:38.879 The thunderbolt really comes in verse 32. 00:11:39.019 --> 00:11:39.420 Can you see? 00:11:39.779 --> 00:11:43.820 This child will be great and son of the Most High. 00:11:44.740 --> 00:11:48.680 This is an extraordinary promise about an extraordinary child. 00:11:48.820 --> 00:11:50.460 Great, when it's used like this, 00:11:50.519 --> 00:11:52.039 when it's used through the Old Testament, 00:11:52.039 --> 00:11:55.279 it usually always refers to God himself. 00:11:57.219 --> 00:11:59.579 And Son of the Most High is a kingly title, 00:12:00.539 --> 00:12:02.419 rather like his royal highness. 00:12:04.599 --> 00:12:08.159 And then when Mary is told that her son will be given the throne of his father David 00:12:08.159 --> 00:12:10.199 and reign over the house of Jacob forever, 00:12:10.579 --> 00:12:13.139 it is clear that she was going to bear the king 00:12:13.139 --> 00:12:15.379 that the people of God have been anticipating. 00:12:15.379 --> 00:12:19.259 The king that we talked about, 00:12:19.740 --> 00:12:21.860 that was promised right back in Genesis 3, 00:12:21.960 --> 00:12:26.340 that we got more of a profile of in Isaiah 11, 00:12:27.120 --> 00:12:29.179 the one who was coming and would be such a threat 00:12:29.179 --> 00:12:32.840 to the prevailing culture of the day. 00:12:33.399 --> 00:12:34.519 We saw that last time. 00:12:36.279 --> 00:12:37.179 Here is the king, 00:12:37.519 --> 00:12:39.539 descended of David through Joseph. 00:12:39.539 --> 00:12:42.459 He will be the divine son, 00:12:42.559 --> 00:12:46.639 an extraordinary promise about an extraordinary child. 00:12:46.740 --> 00:12:47.779 The son of the Most High, 00:12:47.879 --> 00:12:50.039 his royal highest of highnesses. 00:12:50.480 --> 00:12:51.899 These are the titles bestowed on him. 00:12:51.919 --> 00:12:55.339 He is the one who rules and reigns with matchless power. 00:12:55.500 --> 00:12:58.740 When we see people with significant power around us, 00:12:58.819 --> 00:12:59.740 it frightens us. 00:13:01.459 --> 00:13:02.899 When
