tonight. 00:00:31.060 --> 00:00:37.219 And it would be unfair of me to skip ahead to Titus chapter 2 verse 11 or Titus chapter 3 verse 3. 00:00:37.219 --> 00:00:41.280 But when we come to this second half of Titus chapter 1, 00:00:41.859 --> 00:00:49.180 it becomes obvious that the Apostle Paul has not been commissioned by the Crete tourist board. 00:00:49.640 --> 00:00:54.060 He hasn't been commissioned to tell Titus what a wonderful place he is going to, 00:00:54.060 --> 00:01:00.900 the beautiful beaches, the azure blue sky, the wonderful food, the very pleasant temperature and climate. 00:01:01.760 --> 00:01:10.439 Nor has the Apostle Paul been hired to create a congregational profile to attract a prospective minister. 00:01:10.599 --> 00:01:18.620 You know, the profiles that highlight we have a worshiping community of friendly, welcoming people 00:01:18.620 --> 00:01:21.840 who are eager to learn the Bible, eager to grow in faith. 00:01:21.840 --> 00:01:25.200 That is not what Paul is doing here. 00:01:25.460 --> 00:01:28.060 What he is doing is saying to Titus, 00:01:28.240 --> 00:01:34.100 I've got some things that you need to know as you commence your work in 00:02:11.879 This testimony is true. 00:02:11.879 --> 00:02:19.659 Therefore, rebuke them sharply so that they will be sound in the faith and will pay no attention to Jewish myths, 00:02:20.159 --> Titus, are called to minister to. 00:03:06.279 --> 00:03:09.739 And that is who we are called to minister to. 00:03:10.079 --> 00:03:12.259 We're called to minister to real people. 00:03:12.799 --> So the Apostle Paul is giving us an honest assessment. 00:03:26.960 --> 00:03:31.540 He's giving this young man an honest assessment of what lies ahead. 00:03:31.760 --> 00:03:37.379 And as we read 00:03:58.680 --> 00:03:59.879 I said, what does that mean? 00:03:59.939 --> 00:04:00.920 He says, I pump gas. 00:04:01.599 --> 00:04:05.939 You know, we have the capacity with language to describe things in a way that makes them sound good. 00:04:06.039 --> 00:04:07.979 The Apostle Paul does not do that. 00:04:08.379 --> 00:04:10.580 He tells us what we need to know. 00:04:10.780 --> 00:04:12.980 He tells us what we need to know about ourselves. 00:04:13.120 --> 00:04:15.659 He tells us what we need to know about the church. 00:04:15.659 --> 00:04:21.519 And he tells us what we need to know primarily and powerfully about the gospel. 00:04:22.680 --> 00:04:26.180 Imagine that Paul is a consultant, 00:04:26.680 --> 00:04:29.459 that he has been sent or he has been commissioned 00:04:29.459 --> 00:04:35.860 to give an assessment of the prospects of gospel work on the island of Crete 00:04:35.860 --> 00:04:43.939 and to assess the work of the gospel thus far with the church of Jesus Christ on that particular island. 00:04:44.639 --> 00:04:48.439 He begins first here with his diagnosis, 00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:54.860 and then he moves very quickly on to his prescription or his treatment 00:04:54.860 --> 00:04:59.160 to deal with the problem that is before him. 00:04:59.160 --> 00:05:02.180 So let's look together at these verses, 00:05:02.800 --> 00:05:08.860 and we will be referring a bit more broadly to the context here 00:05:08.860 --> 00:05:12.400 to understand how this fits with the rest of the letter 00:05:12.400 --> 00:05:15.260 and with the rest of the pastoral epistles. 00:05:15.879 --> 00:05:19.480 Now, the pastoral epistles are 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, and Titus. 00:05:19.900 --> 00:05:22.480 And these three letters belong together. 00:05:22.620 --> 00:05:24.740 They're not just together in the Bible. 00:05:24.879 --> 00:05:25.900 They are sequential. 00:05:25.899 --> 00:05:29.620 But they have features that hold them together. 00:05:30.459 --> can't say the way they say Van Gogh. 00:05:39.419 --> 00:05:42.179 So as an American, we always call him Vincent Van Gogh. 00:05:42.279 --> 00:05:43.779 So the Van Gogh Museum. 00:05:44.759 --> 00:05:47.899 And as you look at these beautiful pictures, 00:05:48.819 --> 00:05:50.159 as you look at the pictures, 00:05:50.259 --> 00:05:53.519 you can see the signature on the bottom of them that says Vincent. 00:05:53.519 --> 00:05:53.680 Vincent. 00:05:54.139 --> 00:05:56.560 That tells us that he's the artist, Vincent Van Gogh. 00:05:57.219 --> 00:05:58.180 But more than that, 00:05:58.240 --> 00:06:00.019 you don't necessarily need to see the signature 00:06:00.019 --> 00:06:01.419 because you see the style. 00:06:01.959 --> 00:06:05.539 You see the color or the brush strokes or the 00:06:14.259 And as we look at these pastoral epistles 00:06:14.259 --> 00:06:16.379 from which we're drawing our lesson today, 00:06:16.859 --> 00:06:19.680 we'll see that the Apostle Paul has techniques. 00:06:20.259 --> 00:06:21.139 He's the artist. 00:06:21.139 --> 00:06:25.300 He's the author and techniques that draw these three letters together. 00:06:25.599 --> 00:06:31.000 The content, the audience that he's writing to younger men in ministry. 00:06:31.579 --> 00:06:34.060 But also there's a technique that he has 00:06:34.060 --> 00:06:37.399 where in five different places in these three letters, 00:06:37.800 --> 00:06:40.839 he has a phrase that he uses again and again. 00:06:40.979 --> 00:06:42.199 And you only find it here. 00:06:42.199 --> 00:06:47.219 And we see this in Titus chapter 3 at verse 8. 00:06:47.860 --> 00:06:48.420 He says, 00:06:48.779 --> 00:06:51.159 this is a trustworthy saying. 00:06:51.620 --> 00:06:55.519 And this little phrase knits together these three letters 00:06:55.519 --> 00:07:00.240 and he's highlighting for us lessons of life, 00:07:00.779 --> 00:07:02.419 lessons of the Christian life. 00:07:02.879 --> 00:07:06.339 And not wanting to spoil the end of the story, 00:07:06.339 --> 00:07:09.839 but if I read the rest of chapter 3 verse 8, 00:07:09.939 --> 00:07:12.939 that sets the scene for chapter 1 quite nicely. 00:07:13.479 --> 00:07:14.679 Because Paul is saying, 00:07:14.779 --> 00:07:16.060 this is a trustworthy saying, 00:07:16.500 --> 00:07:19.019 and I want you to stress these things 00:07:19.019 --> 00:07:22.419 so that those who have trusted in God 00:07:22.419 --> 00:07:27.639 may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. 00:07:28.299 --> 00:07:32.579 These things are excellent and profitable for everyone. 00:07:32.579 --> 00:07:35.719 So this is a letter about doing good. 00:07:35.859 --> 00:07:38.519 Paul is highlighting this fact. 00:07:38.879 --> 00:07:39.359 And he says, 00:07:39.479 --> 00:07:40.979 if you want to understand, Titus, 00:07:41.039 --> 00:07:45.180 what your message and what your ministry is focused on, 00:07:45.620 --> 00:07:48.459 it's to, by the grace of God, 00:07:48.719 --> 00:07:52.360 is to produce a group of worshiping disciples of Jesus 00:07:52.360 --> 00:07:56.219 who are devoted to doing what is good. 00:07:57.039 --> 00:07:59.039 When we turn to chapter 1, 00:07:59.120 --> 00:08:01.259 we see a very different story. 00:08:01.259 --> 00:08:03.519 We see a very different description. 00:08:04.079 --> 00:08:05.839 We see a people who are described 00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:10.839 as those who are unfit for doing anything good. 00:08:11.139 --> 00:08:15.620 So how can we understand Paul's intention or his goal 00:08:15.620 --> 00:08:18.920 or the goal that he's setting for Titus? 00:08:19.120 --> 00:08:21.019 How can we understand that goal 00:08:21.019 --> 00:08:23.579 in light of what he's saying here in chapter 1? 00:08:24.099 --> 00:08:28.199 How can you end up with people that are eager, 00:08:28.199 --> 00:08:32.139 who are equipped, who are zealous for good works 00:08:32.139 --> 00:08:34.779 when you begin with a group of people 00:08:34.779 --> 00:08:36.519 who are detestable, disobedient, 00:08:36.720 --> 00:08:39.740 and unfit for doing anything good? 00:08:40.799 --> 00:08:44.179 Well, it's been said, I'm not a builder, 00:08:44.679 --> 00:08:47.299 but I've been told that if you want to build high, 00:08:47.519 --> 00:08:49.100 you need to dig deep. 00:08:49.419 --> 00:08:55.159 If you want to establish a well-functioning church of Jesus, 00:08:55.159 --> 00:08:58.659 if you want to establish Christians, disciples of Jesus, 00:08:58.659 --> 00:09:02.059 who are well-established and growing in their faith, 00:09:02.199 --> 00:09:06.199 we need to make sure that the foundation is dug deep. 00:09:06.419 --> 00:09:09.179 We need to establish what the problem is 00:09:09.179 --> 00:09:13.699 and then to understand how the gospel comes to solve 00:09:13.699 --> 00:09:15.860 and to address that problem. 00:09:16.519 --> 00:09:17.980 So what's the problem, Paul? 00:09:17.980 --> 00:09:23.320 Paul, what's your diagnosis of the Crete situation? 00:09:24.220 --> 00:09:26.600 Well, it's all about people. 00:09:26.940 --> 00:09:29.779 That seems to be the crux of the matter here. us thinking, 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:55.159 understanding the right way of believing, 00:09:55.339 --> 00:09:56.199 the right way of living, 00:09:56.319 --> 00:10:00.139 the right way of doing what is right and good. 00:10:01.120 --> 00:10:04.539 Rebellious people, mere talkers, deceivers. 00:10:05.219 --> 00:10:08.399 They belong to the Jewish or the circumcision group. 00:10:08.399 --> 00:10:12.240 But the problem here is that these are the people 00:10:12.240 --> 00:10:13.759 that are in the congregation. 00:10:14.559 --> 00:10:16.699 These are the people that are part of the church. 00:10:17.139 --> 00:10:19.799 And these are the people that are taking a leading role in the church 00:10:19.799 --> 00:10:20.620 and they're speaking. 00:10:21.459 --> 00:10:25.139 They must be silenced because they are ruining whole households 00:10:25.139 --> 00:10:29.419 by teaching things they ought not to teach 00:10:29.419 --> 00:10:33.019 and that for the sake of dishonest gain. disobedient, malicious talkers. 00:11:02.100 --> 00:11:05.800 So you see, what we believe is important. 00:11:06.540 --> 00:11:11.180 If we believe the truth, that is for our own individual benefit. charged with protecting two things. 00:13:21.319 --> 00:13:23.579 The one that we know about more predominantly 00:13:23.579 --> 00:13:25.879 is that these are the people that protect the president, If we're going to reach the city of 00:32:58.460 --> 00:33:06.620 Edinburgh with the gospel of Jesus, mere talk is insufficient. Speaking is inadequate. We need 00:33:06.620 --> 00:33:13.039 to speak and we need to live. There needs to be an integrity of life that demonstrates the reality 00:33:13.039 --> 00:33:21.019 of the gospel in our hearts and in our lives. As you read through this letter to Titus, notice how 00:33:21.019 --> 00:33:29.940 often he focuses on what is good, doing what is good. If we give Martin Luther credit for being the 00:33:29.940 --> 00:33:35.779 great preacher of justification by faith alone, that there's nothing that we can do. It's only about 00:33:35.779 --> 00:33:42.420 Jesus. We can give credit to another reformer who reminds us of the work of the Holy Spirit. 00:33:43.480 --> 00:33:50.759 John Calvin reminds us that when the Holy Spirit dwells in the heart of the believer, something happens. 00:33:51.900 --> 00:33:56.960 When the Holy Spirit takes up residence in your life, one thing is for sure, you will never ever be 00:33:56.960 --> 00:34:03.559 the same again. Your hearts will be changed. Your lives will be changed. Your actions will be changed. 00:34:03.799 --> 00:34:10.119 Not because of you, but because of the Holy Spirit. This is the gospel. This is the power of the gospel. 00:34:35.559 --> 00:34:41.819 This is the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the believers, where you and I know what's right, 00:34:41.820 --> 00:34:49.800 know what's true, and do what's good. And when we have that powerful combination of the truth of the 00:34:49.800 --> 00:34:57.120 gospel and the reality of the gospel in our lives, that people see it, that people hear it, they put two 00:34:57.120 --> 00:35:02.660 and two together, and they conclude that there must be something about these people. There must be 00:35:02.660 --> 00:35:09.640 something about their Jesus. There must be something about his message that changes them from the before 00:35:09.639 --> 00:35:16.900 to the after. Titus chapter 1 verses 10 to 16 is the before. This is what we look like without the 00:35:16.900 --> 00:35:23.639 gospel. Titus chapter 2 and Titus chapter 3 is the after. This is what the gospel does in the lives of 00:35:23.639 --> 00:35:30.480 people. And it's the same people, but they are different because they've come to know and to embrace 00:35:30.480 --> 00:35:34.799 the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us pray. 00:35:34.800 --> 00:35:43.980 Father, we give you thanks for your goodness, your grace, your love, your mercy. We thank you for your 00:35:43.980 --> 00:35:50.660 gospel concerning your son Jesus. We thank you for the power of the Holy Spirit to take that which is 00:35:50.660 --> 00:35:59.440 corrupt and to transform into what is pure, to take what is false and to transform into what is true, 00:35:59.440 --> 00:36:05.860 and to take what is evil and to transform into good. We ask, O Lord, that we would demonstrate the 00:36:05.860 --> 00:36:13.059 reality of the work of the gospel in our lives, that we would be eager, zealous to do what is good, 00:36:13.320 --> 00:36:18.659 that we would be equipped to do what is good, that we would speak and act in a way that we commend our 00:36:18.659 --> 00:36:25.780 Savior Jesus. For any Lord tonight that are not yet committed to Christ, who do not yet have that faith, 00:36:25.780 --> 00:36:32.240 might they see that picture of what sin really looks like, of what evil really looks like, about what 00:36:32.240 --> 00:36:38.019 the corruption of the human heart looks like. And might you convict them of sin, but more importantly, 00:36:38.160 --> 00:36:45.220 might you convert them to Christ, where they see Jesus as all that is pure, all that is good, all that 00:36:45.220 --> 00:36:51.980 is right, all that is lovely. And may they find themselves attracted to Him. For those of us who can 00:36:51.980 --> 00:36:59.000 testify that we know Him, that we've come to meet with Him, may our lives be filled with joy, 00:36:59.460 --> 00:37:06.139 filled with peace, and filled with love, as we give you thanks in the name of our Savior Jesus.
