we're tired, maybe we're battling sniffles and things like that. 00:06:29.360 --> 00:06:37.920 But it's so easy in our weakness to let our minds and our hearts be filled with anything else than God. this passage pointing to Jesus as the Messiah. 00:07:45.120 --> 00:07:51.699 We see in what God sent David to do how no one else will shield God's Messiah. 00:07:52.500 --> 00:07:55.439 No one will shield God's Messiah. 00:07:58.120 --> 00:08:01.160 Well, here comes the Philistine. 00:08:02.500 --> 00:08:07.959 And notice how in verse 43, he's not only taunting the armies of Israel, 00:08:08.220 --> 00:08:12.319 he's invoking curses upon them by his own gods. 00:08:12.319 --> 00:08:15.360 We know something of the gods of the Philistines. 00:08:15.980 --> 00:08:20.279 Remember when the Ark of the Covenant was taken into the temple of Dagon? 00:08:20.639 --> 00:08:22.019 That was one of their gods. 00:08:22.439 --> 00:08:24.060 And how did that story end? 00:08:25.219 --> 00:08:30.519 With Dagon, the idol, fallen flat on his face and his head crushed. 00:08:30.519 --> 00:08:35.579 We can only imagine what some of these curses might have been. 00:08:36.980 --> 00:08:39.340 I let my war, to give me power to crush you. 00:09:08.700 --> 00:09:12.420 I invoke the name of Baal, God of the storms and fertility, 00:09:12.960 --> 00:09:16.940 to make your wives barren and strike you with lightning. 00:09:16.940 --> 00:09:22.000 It's a spiritual battle now that we have. 00:09:22.140 --> 00:09:23.960 Goliath invoking these demons. 00:09:25.840 --> 00:09:31.200 And then, holding that up in the face of God's armies, the Lord of hosts. 00:09:32.560 --> 00:09:38.740 Bragging to them what it will be like for him to feast on bread from the wheat fields that they had grown 00:09:38.740 --> 00:09:42.000 and to drink wine from the vineyards they had tended. 00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:48.440 In verse 43, Goliath makes it evident that he is a blasphemer. 00:09:49.379 --> 00:09:52.419 He is speaking lies about the one true God. 00:09:52.879 --> 00:10:00.019 And he's worshiping these demons, causing Israel to fear the demons more than the one true God. 00:10:01.620 --> 00:10:04.519 Leviticus 24, 16 gives this law. 00:10:05.279 --> 00:10:11.419 Anyone who blasphemes the name of the Lord must be stoned to death. 00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:19.139 And in Judges chapter 20, verse 16, we're told how Benjamites were experts with the sling. 00:10:21.519 --> 00:10:26.120 John pointed out last week how Saul was from the tribe of Benjamin. 00:10:26.960 --> 00:10:31.620 Saul was given the power of the sword to execute this civil law. 00:10:32.700 --> 00:10:39.120 But here is the tallest man of Israel, Israel's Goliath, passive, hiding. 00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:43.019 It's like he said, here am I, Lord, send someone else. 00:10:44.379 --> 00:10:48.399 So Goliath was ready to make God's army his slaves. 00:10:49.039 --> 00:10:52.679 He had disgraced them now for 40 days, morning and evening. 00:10:53.759 --> 00:10:58.179 The accuser's fear tactics froze the armies of God. 00:10:59.039 --> 00:11:02.120 The accuser's posturing had paralyzed them. 00:11:02.120 --> 00:11:12.779 They had listened to this scale-covered blasphemer till he became a symbol in their minds of Satan, the tormentor himself. 00:11:13.700 --> 00:11:16.539 They became functional non-believers. 00:11:16.539 --> 00:11:22.579 In verse 10, the Philistine had said, 00:11:22.799 --> 00:11:25.299 I defy the ranks of Israel this day. 00:11:25.779 --> 00:11:28.899 Give me a man that we may fight together. 00:11:30.599 --> 00:11:39.039 We're told that this champion went out to fight as the one man, the representative, the federal head of the whole Philistine kingdom. 00:11:39.039 --> 00:11:45.639 And it stood out to me recently, this week, how in verse 41, he didn't go out alone. 00:11:45.740 --> 00:11:46.699 Look at verse 41. 00:11:47.319 --> 00:11:55.319 The Philistine came and he began drawing near to David and the man who bore the shield went before him. 00:11:56.120 --> 00:12:02.279 So from the Philistine side in the south, there was the armies of the Philistines and in front of them was Goliath. 00:12:02.459 --> 00:12:04.819 And in front of Goliath, a shield. 00:12:04.820 --> 00:12:10.340 Well, what about from the side of Judah, the side of Israel? 00:12:15.340 --> 00:12:18.220 We didn't hear of anyone going in front of David. 00:12:18.800 --> 00:12:23.740 If it had been Jonathan going out to battle, we know that Jonathan had an armor bearer. 00:12:23.940 --> 00:12:27.940 And so if the prince had an armor bearer, certainly the king had an armor bearer. 00:12:28.060 --> 00:12:32.660 And if they're following the patterns of the world, that's how you would expect them to match, like for like. 00:12:32.659 --> 00:12:35.740 We send a man out with the shield, you send a man out with the shield. 00:12:36.019 --> 00:12:39.519 We send our champion behind him, you send your champion behind him. 00:12:39.740 --> 00:12:40.860 Now let him go at it. 00:12:45.919 --> 00:12:48.399 King Saul was Israel's Goliath. 00:12:49.600 --> 00:12:55.240 Either King Saul or the crown prince of Jonathan, the only two who had weapons in all of Israel, 00:12:55.959 --> 00:12:58.980 should have been leading the way for Israel. 00:12:58.980 --> 00:13:04.220 But instead we get this little shepherd boy. 00:13:05.340 --> 00:13:07.779 In verse 44, the Philistine said to David, 00:13:07.980 --> 00:13:13.240 Come to me and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field. 00:13:13.920 --> 00:13:15.960 He's saying this is going to be too easy. 00:13:17.100 --> 00:13:19.779 You're going to be eaten up by the wild creatures. 00:13:31.319 --> 00:13:33.599 A shepherd, but anointed. 00:13:34.479 --> 00:13:37.279 A shadow of the ultimate Messiah. 00:13:38.079 --> 00:13:41.259 Remember the name of this valley, the valley of the oak tree? 00:13:41.259 --> 00:13:46.379 So there stood David in the valley of the tree. 00:13:47.460 --> 00:13:54.279 No one to shield him in front, representing the whole nation of Israel behind him. 00:13:57.039 --> 00:14:04.200 Israel could expect when the Messiah comes, there will be no one to shield God's Messiah. 00:14:04.200 --> 00:14:12.660 The second observation, pointing to the Messiah, is that the Messiah will fight to magnify God's glory. 00:14:13.300 --> 00:14:16.940 The Messiah will fight to magnify God's glory. 00:14:17.700 --> 00:14:19.820 The whole nation of Israel is frozen. 00:14:21.580 --> 00:14:27.980 And yet Proverbs 16, 18 says that pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. 00:14:28.980 --> 00:14:30.640 How will God be true to this? 00:14:30.639 --> 00:14:35.519 How will God show that his name and his glory will be vindicated? 00:14:37.620 --> 00:14:41.419 Well, God does not match boasting of the world with more boasting. 00:14:43.019 --> 00:14:46.399 The Messiah will fight to magnify God's glory. 00:14:46.539 --> 00:14:47.679 Look at verse 45. 00:14:48.360 --> 00:14:49.799 Then David said to the Philistine, 00:14:49.980 --> 00:14:53.399 You come at me with a sword, with a spear, with a javelin. 00:14:54.159 --> 00:14:57.439 And now he gives four reasons for why he will fight. 00:14:58.580 --> 00:14:59.659 Reason number one. 00:14:59.659 --> 00:15:00.480 He says, 00:15:00.559 --> 00:15:04.779 But I come for the honor of God's name. 00:15:04.839 --> 00:15:05.159 He says, 00:15:05.319 --> 00:15:12.699 I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defiled. 00:15:13.120 --> 00:15:19.799 You have defiled the name of God, the Lord of the armies of Israel and the armies of heaven, the Lord of hosts. 00:15:20.379 --> 00:15:22.219 I come to you in his name. 00:15:22.959 --> 00:15:27.319 See, the Messiah will fight to magnify the honor of God's name. 00:15:27.320 --> 00:15:30.020 In verse 46, we have a second reason. 00:15:30.019 --> 00:15:32.559 This day, David says, 00:15:32.559 --> 00:15:36.639 His reason is to prove that the deliverance will be God-given. 00:15:37.379 --> 00:15:42.539 The Lord will deliver the armies of Israel, whom you have defiled, into my hand. 00:15:42.739 --> 00:15:45.599 And I will strike you and take your head from you. 00:15:45.919 --> 00:15:55.119 And this day I will give it as a carpus of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth. 00:15:55.120 --> 00:16:02.060 The Messiah will prove that God's deliverance is not something man could do for man's self. 00:16:02.279 --> 00:16:04.679 It's something God would do for his people. 00:16:05.820 --> 00:16:12.980 And in taking the accusation of the enemy to give the body of this one little boy, David, to the wild beasts, 00:16:13.159 --> 00:16:15.360 David multiplies that now. 00:16:15.820 --> 00:16:16.840 Look what David says. 00:16:16.840 --> 00:16:24.899 He says, I'm going to give the bodies of all the army, all the carcasses of the entire army to be devoured, 00:16:25.460 --> 00:16:31.220 to prove that God is mightier and that he is the one who gives deliverance. 00:16:31.820 --> 00:16:35.980 And the third reason is what we could call God-centered evangelism. 00:16:36.620 --> 00:16:38.780 Why will the Messiah fight? 00:16:39.240 --> 00:16:46.620 He says in verse 46 that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 00:16:47.620 --> 00:16:53.879 He will fight as God's anointed one to magnify God's glory in all the earth. 00:16:54.620 --> 00:16:56.720 And the fourth reason in verse 47, 00:16:57.639 --> 00:17:02.420 Then so also God's people will know how God saves. 00:17:02.960 --> 00:17:09.579 All the assembly, the army, the Israelites will know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear, 00:17:09.579 --> 00:17:12.340 for the battle is the Lord's.
