the first chunk of it. 00:06:14.199 --> 00:06:17.879 It's namely almost like the introduction to Peter's sermon. 00:06:18.899 --> 00:06:22.339 So with three questions, we're going to just walk through this. 00:06:22.339 --> 00:06:27.060 Number one, what activity is Peter engaged in? 00:06:27.859 --> 00:06:29.679 What activity is Peter engaged in? 00:06:30.899 --> 00:06:35.039 And namely, he's preaching a sermon. 00:06:35.159 --> 00:06:37.459 He is preaching a sermon. 00:06:38.559 --> 00:06:42.779 The Spirit of God leads Peter to preach the Word of God to this gathered crowd. 00:06:43.479 --> 00:06:46.239 So the main focus was not just the languages coming, 00:06:46.319 --> 00:06:49.479 it was to gather people to actually hear the Word of God. 00:06:49.480 --> 00:06:52.680 And so he preaches at Pentecost, 00:06:52.780 --> 00:06:55.200 the first in a whole series of sermons that go throughout Acts. 00:06:55.800 --> 00:06:58.360 So it's important for us just to examine, 00:06:58.500 --> 00:07:03.879 like, what is true, godly, Christ-centered, biblical preaching? 00:07:05.060 --> 00:07:08.939 And I just kind of want to clear up a lot of misunderstandings, hopefully, for you. 00:07:09.500 --> 00:07:13.680 But the art of preaching is not an invention by modern-day preaching personalities. 00:07:14.560 --> 00:07:16.780 It's not something that was invented by the Puritans. 00:07:16.780 --> 00:07:19.020 It's not something that was invented by the Reformers. 00:07:19.480 --> 00:07:24.520 It's something that has existed since this started, from the beginning. 00:07:25.540 --> 00:07:31.460 And it is founded, defined, and demonstrated in the pages of Scripture. 00:07:33.100 --> 00:07:35.540 So Peter's sermon has three parts to it. 00:07:36.259 --> 00:07:39.400 If you look at just the whole thing, starting in verse 14, 00:07:39.939 --> 00:07:42.700 and going down towards verse 36. 00:07:42.699 --> 00:07:45.800 But at first, there's an introduction. 00:07:46.019 --> 00:07:48.560 This is what we're doing today, 12 through 21. 00:07:48.759 --> 00:07:50.879 This is where Peter is explaining Pentecost. 00:07:51.819 --> 00:07:52.819 What just happened? 00:07:52.959 --> 00:07:54.259 This is what just happened. 00:07:54.980 --> 00:07:57.579 So this is an introduction, 12 through 21. 00:07:58.560 --> 00:08:03.680 The theme of this sermon is seen in verses 22 through 36. 00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:07.819 And namely, like, he's lifting up and he's exalting Jesus Christ. 00:08:07.980 --> 00:08:09.780 That's like the goal of all of this. 00:08:10.280 --> 00:08:13.840 That's the main theme, is to present Jesus as the true Messiah. 00:08:14.660 --> 00:08:17.019 That goes from 22 to 36. 00:08:17.759 --> 00:08:21.360 And then lastly, there's like an appeal at the end of it. 00:08:22.139 --> 00:08:23.840 That's in verses 37 through 40. 00:08:23.920 --> 00:08:27.139 He calls people to turn to Christ and be saved. 00:08:27.139 --> 00:08:30.000 So that's namely what he's doing. 00:08:32.259 --> 00:08:33.819 I'll get more into this in just a minute. 00:08:34.419 --> 00:08:40.179 But I also want you to know that, like, as believers, we are all to be preachers of the gospel. 00:08:41.220 --> 00:08:41.439 Okay? 00:08:41.840 --> 00:08:47.159 Now, especially what we do here on Sunday morning, what I'm doing now, and Nathan does, 00:08:47.199 --> 00:08:49.799 and others that come up here, that is preaching. 00:08:49.879 --> 00:08:52.620 And there are men who are gifted at this. 00:08:52.620 --> 00:08:58.320 But that doesn't negate the fact that preaching is also used in a broad sense of what all believers are supposed to be doing. 00:08:59.080 --> 00:09:00.600 And so we're going to unpack that. 00:09:00.700 --> 00:09:03.639 But I want you not just to turn me out and say, or tune me out and say, 00:09:04.279 --> 00:09:08.299 this is for pastors, this is for, you know, the elite in the church to hear. 00:09:23.000 But sadly, in our culture, many have used preaching as like a negative secular term for someone annoying, 00:09:23.159 --> 00:09:24.539 telling you something you don't want to hear. 00:09:24.699 --> 00:09:26.539 Stop preaching at me. 00:09:27.219 --> 00:09:28.319 Stop saying this. 00:09:29.939 --> 00:09:34.479 And it's not, but it's not loud, annoying people cramming things down your throat. 00:09:34.719 --> 00:09:36.659 It's not really what it is. 00:09:36.659 --> 00:09:43.480 And so, unfortunately, though, in our evangelism, in our sharing the gospel with people, 00:09:44.419 --> 00:09:47.779 we don't really do what the Bible calls us to do. 00:09:47.899 --> 00:09:53.299 Much of what you see in the church today is what you can sum up as like emotional manipulation. 00:09:54.039 --> 00:09:59.139 They try to trick people with theatrics and fancy speech just to believe in Jesus. 00:09:59.139 --> 00:10:03.019 But it's not empowered by the Word of God or the Spirit of God. 00:10:03.620 --> 00:10:04.639 It's manipulation. 00:10:04.639 --> 00:10:14.039 And so, the truth is that many people, many churches produce false converts as a result of this. 00:10:14.080 --> 00:10:16.059 The people that never really heard the gospel. 00:10:16.319 --> 00:10:21.379 They were just emotionally manipulated into praying a prayer or something. 00:10:21.699 --> 00:10:23.399 So, it's not what it is. 00:10:24.580 --> 00:10:30.700 So, others consider it outdated and they replace it just with music, with drama, with theatrics or liturgy. 00:10:30.700 --> 00:10:38.480 But you should know that preaching will stand forever because it's God's method. 00:10:38.560 --> 00:10:40.500 It's God's method to reach people. 00:10:41.460 --> 00:10:42.680 And that's 00:10:48.100 It's something that's real. 00:10:49.180 --> 00:10:50.140 So, what is preaching? 00:10:51.220 --> 00:10:53.080 I can unpack that just for a minute. 00:10:53.080 --> 00:10:59.020 But in the church, a lot of people make preaching synonymous with teaching. 00:11:00.440 --> 00:11:03.120 And so, let me just explain the difference between those two things. 00:11:03.180 --> 00:11:03.860 They are related. 00:11:04.020 --> 00:11:05.680 They're not totally separated. 00:11:06.639 --> 00:11:13.620 But teaching is instructing, clarifying, explaining the Word of God to people. 00:11:13.620 So, certainly, like an important part of preaching is teaching and explaining. 00:11:25.019 --> 00:11:30.560 But preaching also carries another element that goes a little beyond just teaching. 00:11:31.960 --> 00:11:39.720 Preaching carries the element of calling people to respond in accordance to what they just heard in the Word of God. 00:11:39.720 --> 00:11:45.660 And it's to herald something, like as if you were representing a king. 00:11:46.960 --> 00:11:50.740 It carries a suggestion of formality and gravity and authority. 00:11:50.879 --> 00:11:53.560 Like, you have to listen to this and you have to respond to this. 00:11:54.700 --> 00:11:58.700 So, rather than just, again, emotionally manipulating people, 00:11:58.840 --> 00:12:03.940 the Scripture says we are to persuade people to follow Christ. 00:12:03.940 --> 00:12:12.940 Throughout Acts, we see men preaching and people were persuaded to come to Christ, persuaded to believe. 00:12:13.620 --> 00:12:18.720 So, preaching is for the sake of persuasion, to convince someone, to change someone's thinking, 00:12:19.320 --> 00:12:25.060 to change someone's disposition of where they were, not to walk away different than when they first came. 00:12:26.020 --> 00:12:27.060 So, one text. 00:12:27.180 --> 00:12:29.580 I only have two places for you to turn to, but hold your hand in Acts. 00:12:29.580 --> 00:12:31.440 But look at Acts 17. 00:12:31.620 --> 00:12:33.840 Just go over a few chapters. 00:12:33.980 --> 00:12:34.740 Acts 17. 00:12:35.940 --> 00:12:37.280 I just want to show you this. 00:12:41.020 --> 00:12:41.900 Acts 17. 00:12:42.040 --> 00:12:44.879 This is when Paul is in Thessalonica. 00:12:45.980 --> 00:12:47.400 And just go to verse 4. 00:12:48.120 --> 00:12:49.160 Or, excuse me, verse 1. 00:12:49.259 --> 00:12:50.200 We'll read through verse 4. 00:12:51.440 --> 00:12:52.200 It says, 00:12:52.200 --> 00:12:58.060 Now, when they had passed through Amapholis and Apollonia, 00:12:58.320 --> 00:12:59.580 they came to Thessalonica, 00:13:00.540 --> 00:13:02.700 where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 00:13:03.560 --> 00:13:05.780 And Paul went in, and as was his custom, 00:13:06.500 --> 00:13:10.280 and on three Sabbath days, he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 00:13:11.360 --> 00:13:18.040 explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, 00:13:18.039 --> 00:13:18.679 and saying, 00:13:19.500 --> 00:13:22.539 This Jesus whom I proclaim to you is the Christ. 00:13:23.579 --> 00:13:24.240 And listen to this. 00:13:24.299 --> 00:13:28.240 And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, 00:13:28.899 --> 00:13:30.759 as did a great many of devout Greeks, 00:13:31.559 --> 00:13:33.159 and not few of the leading women. 00:13:34.039 --> 00:13:35.339 So, look at these words. 00:13:35.899 --> 00:13:36.299 Reasoned. 00:13:37.599 --> 00:13:38.039 Explained. 00:13:39.159 --> 00:13:39.639 Proved. 00:13:40.620 --> 00:13:41.059 Persuaded. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:42.319 Okay? 00:13:42.860 --> 00:13:46.500 Those are words that are all there for us to get a glimpse of. 00:14:40.980 Everything is by the book, step by step. 00:14:41.620 --> 00:14:44.399 Do this, then do this, then do this. 00:14:44.440 --> 00:14:47.440 So, we learn a way to share the gospel with somebody, 00:14:47.680 --> 00:14:50.100 and we try to apply it to every single person we meet. 00:14:51.220 --> 00:14:53.100 And that's just not what we see in the Scripture. 00:14:54.159 --> 00:14:57.379 Have you ever noticed that Jesus never talked to one person the same way? 00:14:58.320 --> 00:14:59.040 You ever notice that? 00:14:59.200 --> 00:15:02.259 He never, like, applies the same method to people. 00:15:02.259 --> 00:15:07.019 He preaches the gospel, and he points to himself, but he doesn't use the same method. 00:15:07.980 --> 00:15:13.000 Which means that learning to talk about the gospel, have a discourse about the gospel, 00:15:13.580 --> 00:15:18.019 it's an art that you learn, like fishing or cooking. 00:15:18.179 --> 00:15:19.980 Like, you can't just read a book, and then you're good at it. 00:15:20.019 --> 00:15:21.279 You have to practice it. 00:15:22.159 --> 00:15:25.519 You have to learn the art of Christian persuasion. 00:15:25.519 --> 00:15:28.139 And so, this is God's method. 00:15:28.379 --> 00:15:30.379 It's not just one of many means. 00:15:31.039 --> 00:15:36.259 It's the means that God has chosen to build up His church and to reach the --> 00:15:47.899 he wrote in Romans 10, very familiar. 00:15:48.939 --> 00:15:49.259 He says, 00:15:49.259 --> 00:15:52.019 And how are they to believe in Him who they never have heard? 00:15:52.740 --> 00:15:55.439 And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 00:15:56.519 --> 00:15:59.199 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? 00:16:00.019 --> 00:16:03.240 So, faith comes by hearing and hearing in the Word of Christ. 00:16:03.319 --> 00:16:05.419 So, we have to tell people the Word of God. 00:16:05.539 --> 00:16:09.960 So, the Spirit of God then uses that to work in their 00:16:36.340 The gifts are real, but at the same time, 00:16:37.000 --> 00:16:39.360 this word is used in a broad sense of the church. 00:16:39.460 --> 00:16:42.299 It's not just used for a few, few men. 00:16:42.299 --> 00:16:45.479 All believers are to preach the Gospel. 00:16:46.819 --> 00:16:53.079 Every person that belongs to Christ and is dwelt by the Spirit of God is a bearer of the good news. 00:16:53.080 --> 00:16:59.440 So, I kind of hope, just to say some things that might change your thinking on this, 00:16:59.580 --> 00:17:05.940 but in Acts 8, verse 2, it says that when the believers are persecuted, they scattered, 00:17:06.100 --> 00:17:10.079 and they all went about preaching the Word, preaching the good news. 00:17:10.079 --> 00:17:11.859 All right? 00:17:12.099 --> 00:17:18.559 So, just to kind of throw some ideas out there to you that you might not be familiar with, 00:17:18.659 --> 00:17:23.460 but I hope to show you in a little while that even Paul was not that great of a preacher, 00:17:24.299 --> 00:17:25.759 meaning that he was not that eloquent. 00:17:26.000 --> 00:17:29.799 We just have Paul as this ultimate Christian guy, 00:17:29.919 --> 00:17:32.659 and it's like he was a man just like me, 00:17:33.339 --> 00:17:35.339 and he was used of God in a powerful way, 00:17:35.339 --> 00:17:40.399 but there's a lot of things in the Scripture
