us to read again the words of verse 32 John chapter 12 and the words of verse 32 where Jesus amongst other things says and I when I am lifted up from the earth will draw all people to myself 00:34:54.420 --> 00:34:56.420 you may 00:34:56.420 --> 00:35:13.420 you may not know that the scientists in China and in America are having a bit of a competition at present to try and develop the world's strongest magnet 00:35:13.420 --> 00:35:25.420 currently China is a magnet that is 800,000 times stronger than the earth's magnetic field 00:35:25.420 --> 00:35:27.420 so the earth's magnetic field compass always points north 00:35:27.420 --> 00:35:29.420 it's a magnetic field that does that 00:35:29.420 --> 00:35:36.420 China has developed a magnet that's 800,000 times stronger than the earth's magnetic field 00:35:36.420 --> 00:35:46.420 we're assured by both the Chinese and American scientists that these developments are going to help with our understanding of chemistry and physics and materials 00:35:46.420 --> 00:35:56.420 but human nature being what human nature is whatever good discoveries we end up having it tends to be used for things that are less than helpful 00:35:56.420 --> 00:36:14.420 but what we find in these words of verse 32 here is actually something that's got an even stronger pulling power than this magnet that the Chinese have been able to develop 00:36:14.420 --> 00:36:19.420 that's 800,000 times stronger than the earth's magnetic field 00:36:19.420 --> 00:36:31.420 because what we find here in verse 32 is that we've got a drawing power that can draw from thousands of miles away 00:36:31.420 --> 00:36:36.420 that can draw from thousands of years ago 00:36:36.420 --> 00:36:45.420 right back to a particular location where a particular event took place 00:36:45.420 --> 00:36:50.420 whereby outside of Jerusalem the Lord Jesus Christ the Lord of glory 00:36:50.420 --> 00:36:55.420 the one present at the very beginning of time calling into existence all that we see 00:36:55.420 --> 00:36:59.420 the giver of life is about to die 00:36:59.420 --> 00:37:02.420 the light of the world is about to be extinguished 00:37:02.420 --> 00:37:08.420 Jesus says that when he is when he is lifted up from the earth 00:37:08.420 --> 00:37:12.420 that he is going to draw all people to himself 00:37:12.420 --> 00:37:14.420 and that's what we see 00:37:14.420 --> 00:37:18.420 we see people of all ages drawn to Jesus 00:37:18.420 --> 00:37:22.420 we see people from all cultures drawn to Jesus 00:37:22.420 --> 00:37:26.420 we see people from all generations drawn to Jesus 00:37:26.420 --> 00:37:34.420 drawn so that they look to the events of this cross at Calvary 00:37:34.420 --> 00:37:40.420 and not just merely with a casual glance at something that's happened and then they move on 00:37:40.420 --> 00:37:48.420 but drawn in such a way that when they look and see what Jesus has done 00:37:48.420 --> 00:37:52.420 then their lives are transformed 00:37:52.420 --> 00:38:00.420 and so the pulling, drawing, captivating appeal of Jesus Christ 00:38:00.420 --> 00:38:04.420 when he is declared in all of his glory 00:38:04.420 --> 00:38:10.420 it will draw to himself all those whom the Father will call 00:38:10.420 --> 00:38:16.420 and tonight we're going to be thinking about this drawing magnetic power 00:38:16.420 --> 00:38:18.420 of Jesus 00:38:18.420 --> 00:38:22.420 that transforms men, women, boys and girls 00:38:22.420 --> 00:38:26.420 that has the power to transform you this evening 00:38:26.420 --> 00:38:30.420 if you entered this building without a living relationship with Jesus 00:38:30.420 --> 00:38:32.420 as we encounter the power of the gospel 00:38:32.420 --> 00:38:36.420 it is that power that can change your life 00:38:36.420 --> 00:38:38.420 that can change anyone of our lives 00:38:38.420 --> 00:38:42.420 and so this evening we're going to be thinking about this drawing power of Jesus 00:38:42.420 --> 00:38:46.420 let's put this into its context 00:38:46.420 --> 00:38:48.420 however we need to always make sure we do so 00:38:48.420 --> 00:38:52.420 and what we saw on Friday evening 00:38:52.420 --> 00:38:56.420 when we looked at the first part of this section of John chapter 12 00:38:56.420 --> 00:39:00.420 we saw that there was a great request 00:39:00.420 --> 00:39:03.420 those folks had come from far away 00:39:03.420 --> 00:39:06.420 and they had come with a particular desire 00:39:06.420 --> 00:39:08.420 we want to see Jesus 00:39:08.420 --> 00:39:11.420 and when Jesus was given this message 00:39:11.420 --> 00:39:19.420 he took their arrival as the sign that the hour that had always been in the future 00:39:19.420 --> 00:39:21.420 throughout John's gospel as a drum beat 00:39:21.420 --> 00:39:23.420 every so often the hour has not yet come 00:39:23.420 --> 00:39:24.420 the hour has not yet come 00:39:24.420 --> 00:39:25.420 the hour has not yet come 00:39:25.420 --> 00:39:27.420 with these Greek visitors 00:39:27.420 --> 00:39:29.420 with their request to see Jesus 00:39:29.420 --> 00:39:34.420 he now says that the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified 00:39:34.420 --> 00:39:35.420 glorified 00:39:35.420 --> 00:39:38.420 the hour has come now for the plan of salvation 00:39:38.420 --> 00:39:40.420 developed in eternity 00:39:40.420 --> 00:39:44.420 enacted in time to move on to its next phase 00:39:44.420 --> 00:39:46.420 and this next phase is going to mean that 00:39:46.420 --> 00:39:48.420 the people from all the nations of the earth 00:39:48.420 --> 00:39:49.420 are going to be 00:39:49.420 --> 00:39:51.420 are going to be welcomed 00:39:51.420 --> 00:39:54.420 and blessed as they look to Jesus 00:39:54.420 --> 00:39:58.420 up until this point Jesus had only been going to the lost sheep of Israel 00:39:58.420 --> 00:40:01.420 but now there's this wider perspective 00:40:01.420 --> 00:40:07.420 because now the plan of salvation has moved on to a new phase 00:40:07.420 --> 00:40:09.420 a critical phase for Jesus 00:40:09.420 --> 00:40:13.420 and so the first thing I want us to point out from this passage this evening 00:40:13.420 --> 00:40:18.420 is the internal impact of this next phase if you like 00:40:18.420 --> 00:40:20.420 of the plan of salvation 00:40:20.420 --> 00:40:22.420 and the impact that that has on Jesus 00:40:22.420 --> 00:40:28.420 and we have that for us described in verse 27 to verse 29 00:40:28.420 --> 00:40:29.420 where it says 00:40:29.420 --> 00:40:31.420 now is my soul troubled 00:40:31.420 --> 00:40:32.420 and what shall I say 00:40:32.420 --> 00:40:34.420 Father save me from this hour 00:40:34.420 --> 00:40:37.420 but for this purpose I've come to this hour 00:40:37.420 --> 00:40:40.420 Father glorify your name 00:40:40.420 --> 00:40:41.420 then a voice came from heaven 00:40:41.420 --> 00:40:43.420 I have glorified it 00:40:43.420 --> 00:40:45.420 and I will glorify it again 00:40:45.420 --> 00:40:49.420 the crowd that stood there and heard it said 00:40:49.420 --> 00:40:51.420 that it had thundered 00:40:51.420 --> 00:40:52.420 others said 00:40:52.420 --> 00:40:55.420 an angel has spoken to him 00:40:55.420 --> 00:41:02.420 the eternal impact of this hour coming upon Jesus 00:41:02.420 --> 00:41:06.420 there was a sequel last year I think it was 00:41:06.420 --> 00:41:08.420 Gladiators 2 movie 00:41:08.420 --> 00:41:11.420 some of you may have seen the original Gladiators film 00:41:11.420 --> 00:41:15.420 in that film the main character played by an actor called Russell Crowe 00:41:15.420 --> 00:41:19.420 in his, in the death scene of the main character 00:41:19.420 --> 00:41:23.420 what stood out in that movie was that over about five minutes 00:41:23.420 --> 00:41:27.420 you saw this main character dying 00:41:27.420 --> 00:41:33.420 and it would go, revert images from him to images of what he's thinking about 00:41:33.420 --> 00:41:36.420 and he's walking through fields and there's all this beautiful sunset 00:41:36.420 --> 00:41:39.420 and it's all so calm and it's so peaceful 00:41:39.420 --> 00:41:44.420 and bit by bit this carries on until eventually death comes 00:41:44.420 --> 00:41:47.420 and you know the movies like to portray what death is going to be like 00:41:47.420 --> 00:41:51.420 and not necessarily particularly accurately 00:41:51.420 --> 00:41:52.420 but that's them 00:41:52.420 --> 00:41:54.420 so there you have the main character 00:41:54.420 --> 00:41:57.420 in that great, that action adventure as it were 00:41:57.420 --> 00:42:00.420 and his death was so calm and so peaceful 00:42:00.420 --> 00:42:03.420 and so pleasant and filled with wonderful images 00:42:03.420 --> 00:42:06.420 and you think what a contrast to the Lord of Glory 00:42:06.420 --> 00:42:10.420 because as the main character of all scripture 00:42:10.420 --> 00:42:14.420 we have recorded for us in all four Gospels 00:42:14.420 --> 00:42:18.420 that when Jesus was approaching his death 00:42:18.420 --> 00:42:22.420 it wasn't nice, calm, relaxing images 00:42:22.420 --> 00:42:27.420 there wasn't warm, soothing music in the background 00:42:27.420 --> 00:42:29.420 to create just the right atmosphere 00:42:29.420 --> 00:42:32.420 there was in the sense of our Saviour 00:42:32.420 --> 00:42:35.420 the horror of what was about to unfold 00:42:35.420 --> 00:42:38.420 that for our Saviour, when he says here 00:42:38.420 --> 00:42:40.420 now is my soul troubled 00:42:40.420 --> 00:42:42.420 he's not exaggerating 00:42:42.420 --> 00:42:45.420 he is communicating the agitation 00:42:45.420 --> 00:42:47.420 that he now experiences 00:42:47.420 --> 00:42:50.420 conscious that the hour has now come 00:42:50.420 --> 00:42:54.420 this is the same terminology that's used in different occasions 00:42:54.420 --> 00:42:57.420 it's used as Jesus saw the impact of death 00:42:57.420 --> 00:43:01.420 and what it's done in the household of Lazarus 00:43:01.420 --> 00:43:04.420 he's going to use similar words 00:43:04.420 --> 00:43:07.420 agitation, trauma as he thinks of the betrayal 00:43:07.420 --> 00:43:08.420 in chapter 13 00:43:08.420 --> 00:43:10.420 the words are going to be used there as well 00:43:10.420 --> 00:43:14.420 but for Jesus, he is now deeply troubled 00:43:14.420 --> 00:43:18.420 words that are associated in the original with trauma 00:43:18.420 --> 00:43:21.420 why is he so troubled? 00:43:21.420 --> 00:43:24.420 because with the hour coming 00:43:24.420 --> 00:43:30.420 the time where he is going to become a curse for sin 00:43:30.420 --> 00:43:37.420 and be before the holy justice of a sin hating God 00:43:37.420 --> 00:43:42.420 well that, instead of being an event well in the future 00:43:42.420 --> 00:43:47.420 is now an event that's right up close 00:43:47.420 --> 00:43:52.420 and the prospect of standing before a sin hating God 00:43:52.420 --> 00:43:55.420 carrying this sin of the world on him 00:43:55.420 --> 00:44:00.420 is something that shook him right to his very core 00:44:00.420 --> 00:44:06.420 this is a different perspective to what we see of Jesus, isn't it? 00:44:06.420 --> 00:44:11.420 because we think of Jesus and the impact of his teaching 00:44:11.420 --> 00:44:13.420 and we think of the impact of his ministry 00:44:13.420 --> 00:44:14.420 people being made whole again 00:44:14.420 --> 00:44:16.420 we think of the control that he's had 00:44:16.420 --> 00:44:20.420 and yet now as he comes to a point 00:44:20.420 --> 00:44:23.420 where this hour is arriving 00:44:23.420 --> 00:44:30.420 for him the full weight of what's about to be unleashed upon him 00:44:31.420 --> 00:44:32.420 is coming into focus 00:44:32.420 --> 00:44:35.420 and it's not something he's shrugging off 00:44:35.420 --> 00:44:39.420 it's something that's leaving him really, really troubled 00:44:39.420 --> 00:44:42.420 because he knows he's going to be in a position 00:44:42.420 --> 00:44:45.420 where he's never been in before 00:44:45.420 --> 00:44:48.420 because not simply the one who had no sin 00:44:48.420 --> 00:44:51.420 is now going to become sin as we thought about 00:44:51.420 --> 00:44:56.420 but the one who has lived that life of intimate connection with his father 00:44:56.420 --> 00:44:58.420 even through his ministry 00:44:58.420 --> 00:45:00.420 reflecting the father's words and will 00:45:00.420 --> 00:45:02.420 and telling people the father's always with him 00:45:02.420 --> 00:45:04.420 he's going to experience 00:45:04.420 --> 00:45:07.420 as he stands before this sin hating God 00:45:07.420 --> 00:45:09.420 bearing your sin and bearing my sin 00:45:09.420 --> 00:45:12.420 he's going to experience a break in that connection 00:45:12.420 --> 00:45:14.420 a break in that communion 00:45:14.420 --> 00:45:17.420 he's going to sense as if that's no longer there 00:45:17.420 --> 00:45:18.420 he's going to cry out 00:45:18.420 --> 00:45:19.420 and he's going to say 00:45:19.420 --> 00:45:22.420 well my God why have you forsaken me? 00:45:22.420 --> 00:45:24.420 he's not even going to have that sense 00:45:24.420 --> 00:45:25.420 as we thought of earlier on today 00:45:25.420 --> 00:45:27.420 of that fatherly presence 00:45:27.420 --> 00:45:29.420 that accompanied him all the way through 00:45:29.420 --> 00:45:31.420 so for Jesus here 00:45:31.420 --> 00:45:33.420 he's conscious of the time 00:45:33.420 --> 00:45:35.420 that he is going to be in a situation 00:45:35.420 --> 00:45:37.420 that he's never been in before 00:45:37.420 --> 00:45:41.420 and the reason he's going to be in that position 00:45:41.420 --> 00:45:44.420 is because of the brokenness of your life 00:45:44.420 --> 00:45:46.420 and the brokenness of my life 00:45:46.420 --> 00:45:48.420 brokenness caused by sin 00:45:48.420 --> 00:45:50.420 caused by our own sin 00:45:50.420 --> 00:45:52.420 caused by other people's sin 00:45:52.420 --> 00:45:54.420 but nonetheless the brokenness 00:45:54.420 --> 00:45:56.420 the sinfulness of our life 00:45:56.420 --> 00:45:58.420 he's going to be in that place 00:45:58.420 --> 00:46:01.420 to deal with our sin once and for all 00:46:01.420 --> 00:46:02.420 he's going to be in that place 00:46:02.420 --> 00:46:08.420 so that he can deal with the worst of our secrets 00:46:08.420 --> 00:46:12.420 the things that we hope people never find out about 00:46:12.420 --> 00:46:15.420 he's going to be in that place 00:46:15.420 --> 00:46:17.420 bearing our sin 00:46:17.420 --> 00:46:22.420 conscious of the attitudes that we have shown 00:46:22.420 --> 00:46:24.420 and the selfishness that's been there 00:46:24.420 --> 00:46:27.420 and the way in which we perhaps have used others 00:46:27.420 --> 00:46:31.420 and the way in which we perhaps have manipulated 00:46:31.420 --> 00:46:34.420 or the way in which we've cruelly dealt with other people 00:46:34.420 --> 00:46:38.420 and the way in which we've had excesses in different ways 00:46:38.420 --> 00:46:43.420 and all of these things that have evidenced 00:46:43.420 --> 00:46:45.420 how we were no longer 00:46:45.420 --> 00:46:48.420 or how we were not living in a right relationship with God 00:46:48.420 --> 00:46:52.420 all of that was going to be condensed 00:46:52.420 --> 00:46:54.420 all of it was going to be concentrated 00:46:54.420 --> 00:46:57.420 and all of it was going to be taken by our Saviour 00:46:57.420 --> 00:47:01.420 and so the very prospect of this unfolding 00:47:01.420 --> 00:47:04.420 was leaving him troubled 00:47:04.420 --> 00:47:07.420 little wonder it left him troubled 00:47:07.420 --> 00:47:12.420 and so his trouble as this hour is approaching 00:47:12.420 --> 00:47:16.420 is a trouble that only he as this infinite being 00:47:16.420 --> 00:47:20.420 who could offer this and pay this infinite price 00:47:21.420 --> 00:47:26.420 was a trouble that only he could take 00:47:26.420 --> 00:47:29.420 and he could deal with for us 00:47:29.420 --> 00:47:32.420 and so he makes it clear that his soul is troubled 00:47:32.420 --> 00:47:37.420 and into that context he speaks and says 00:47:37.420 --> 00:47:41.420 well should I ask the Father to somehow save me from this hour 00:47:41.420 --> 00:47:46.420 and of course there is the recognition that he knew 00:47:46.420 --> 00:47:47.420 that it was for this hour 00:47:47.420 --> 00:47:49.420 he's coming from verse 27 00:47:49.420 --> 00:47:51.420 and then he has this prayer 00:47:51.420 --> 00:47:53.420 Father glorify your name 00:47:53.420 --> 00:47:57.420 and just as Jesus had at the very start of his ministry 00:47:57.420 --> 00:47:59.420 this voice from heaven 00:48:00.420 --> 00:48:02.420 to encourage and to 00:48:02.420 --> 00:48:05.420 and to give to him what he needed at that moment 00:48:05.420 --> 00:48:07.420 as he rose from the river Jordan 00:48:07.420 --> 00:48:09.420 having been baptized 00:48:09.420 --> 00:48:11.420 the Holy Spirit descending upon him 00:48:11.420 --> 00:48:12.420 and this voice thundering from heaven 00:48:12.420 --> 00:48:14.420 this is my beloved son 00:48:14.420 --> 00:48:16.420 in whom I am well pleased 00:48:16.420 --> 00:48:18.420 and just as Jesus in 00:48:18.420 --> 00:48:19.420 in John 17 00:48:19.420 --> 00:48:23.420 as he as he set his face towards Jerusalem 00:48:23.420 --> 00:48:25.420 and all that was about to unfold 00:48:25.420 --> 00:48:26.420 it was now coming closer 00:48:26.420 --> 00:48:29.420 and still there is this word from heaven 00:48:29.420 --> 00:48:31.420 and now here 00:48:31.420 --> 00:48:33.420 as the hour has now struck 00:48:33.420 --> 00:48:36.420 we have this third word from heaven 00:48:36.420 --> 00:48:38.420 when the voice from heaven says 00:48:38.420 --> 00:48:40.420 I have glorified your name 00:48:40.420 --> 00:48:43.420 and I will glorify it again 00:48:43.420 --> 00:48:46.420 and so what we're learning here 00:48:46.420 --> 00:48:49.420 is that the Father is being glorified 00:48:49.420 --> 00:48:50.420 through the ministry of the Son 00:48:50.420 --> 00:48:56.420 and so we learned that at the birth of Jesus didn't we? 00:48:56.420 --> 00:49:00.420 the very arrival of the Creator God into his creation 00:49:00.420 --> 00:49:03.420 to be limited in a time and in a space 00:49:03.420 --> 00:49:04.420 for the first time in his existence 00:49:04.420 --> 00:49:07.420 to be helpless, to be dependent 00:49:07.420 --> 00:49:11.420 well what was the anthem that the angels would sing? 00:49:11.420 --> 00:49:13.420 well glory to God in the highest 00:49:13.420 --> 00:49:16.420 so there was glory given to the Father 00:49:16.420 --> 00:49:20.420 through the very arrival of Jesus into this broken world 00:49:21.420 --> 00:49:23.420 and there was glory given to the Father 00:49:23.420 --> 00:49:26.420 through the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ 00:49:26.420 --> 00:49:29.420 as he taught, as he healed, as he showed back 00:49:29.420 --> 00:49:31.420 as he showed by example how to live 00:49:31.420 --> 00:49:34.420 as he protected, as he rescued 00:49:34.420 --> 00:49:37.420 as he stood up for those who were being mistreated 00:49:37.420 --> 00:49:42.420 all of that was bringing glory to the Heavenly Father 00:49:42.420 --> 00:49:44.420 and yet there is a sense in which 00:49:44.420 --> 00:49:46.420 the ultimate glory to the Father 00:49:46.420 --> 00:49:48.420 is going to be the glory that's going to be 00:49:48.420 --> 00:49:51.420 expressed at the cross at Calvary 00:49:52.420 --> 00:49:54.420 because there at the cross at Calvary 00:49:54.420 --> 00:49:56.420 the Father is going to be glorified 00:49:56.420 --> 00:49:58.420 because there at the cross at Calvary 00:49:58.420 --> 00:50:00.420 we're going to see something about 00:50:00.420 --> 00:50:04.420 of the absolute holiness of God 00:50:05.420 --> 00:50:09.420 we're going to see something of the absolute justice of God 00:50:09.420 --> 00:50:13.420 we're going to see something of the absolute faithfulness of God 00:50:13.420 --> 00:50:17.420 we're going to see something of the depth of the very love of God 00:50:17.420 --> 00:50:22.420 all of these are on display at Calvary's cross 00:50:22.420 --> 00:50:26.420 the holy God who cannot just ignore sin 00:50:26.420 --> 00:50:31.420 the just God who has to ensure that justice is done 00:50:32.420 --> 00:50:34.420 the God who is faithful, the God who has promised 00:50:34.420 --> 00:50:37.420 that someday there would be somebody who would come 00:50:37.420 --> 00:50:41.420 who would undo the damage done and brought into this world by Satan 00:50:41.420 --> 00:50:45.420 and undo the damage caused by sin once and for all 00:50:45.420 --> 00:50:48.420 and on display would be the very love of God 00:50:48.420 --> 00:50:51.420 that how God can simultaneously be the one who punishes 00:50:51.420 --> 00:50:53.420 and the one who saves at the same time 00:50:53.420 --> 00:50:59.420 and so the cross is going to be this great glorification of God the Father 00:51:00.420 --> 00:51:03.420 and here we have the Son being very conscious of that 00:51:04.420 --> 00:51:09.420 and so on the cross what is unfolding? 00:51:09.420 --> 00:51:14.420 well the eternal Son is bringing glory to the Father 00:51:15.420 --> 00:51:19.420 and the Father is being glorified through this work 00:51:20.420 --> 00:51:22.420 we tend to think of glory 00:51:23.420 --> 00:51:26.420 when people are given a platform or put on some podium 00:51:26.420 --> 00:51:29.420 or given some spotlight or whatever 00:51:30.420 --> 00:51:34.420 and somehow they are exalted in one way or another 00:51:34.420 --> 00:51:38.420 whereas here the glory is going to be given 00:51:39.420 --> 00:51:41.420 as Jesus is lifted up 00:51:42.420 --> 00:51:44.420 but lifted up in an entirely different way 00:51:45.420 --> 00:51:48.420 as he's lifted up to die the death that we deserve 00:51:49.420 --> 00:51:50.420 and so this hour has come 00:51:51.420 --> 00:51:54.420 the internal impact of this hour upon Jesus 00:51:55.420 --> 00:51:56.420 is that he's troubled by it 00:51:57.420 --> 00:51:59.420 the external impact of this hour 00:51:59.420 --> 00:52:01.420 is what Jesus goes on to speak about next 00:52:01.420 --> 00:52:03.420 from verse 30 to verse 36 00:52:04.420 --> 00:52:07.420 because Jesus speaks that a number of things 00:52:08.420 --> 00:52:09.420 are now going to happen 00:52:10.420 --> 00:52:11.420 because this hour has come 00:52:12.420 --> 00:52:15.420 and a number of things are going to be learned 00:52:16.420 --> 00:52:18.420 that now that this hour has come 00:52:19.420 --> 00:52:21.420 first of all that judgment is coming 00:52:22.420 --> 00:52:23.420 and Jesus sees 00:52:24.420 --> 00:52:26.420 now is the judgment of this world 00:52:26.420 --> 00:52:27.420 verse 31 00:52:28.420 --> 00:52:29.420 now is the judgment of this world 00:52:30.420 --> 00:52:32.420 because what's going to unfold at Calvary 00:52:33.420 --> 00:52:34.420 is going to make people aware 00:52:35.420 --> 00:52:38.420 that actually the biggest problems in humanity 00:52:39.420 --> 00:52:40.420 they're not external 00:52:41.420 --> 00:52:41.420 00:52:42.420 --> 00:52:44.420 and they're not time bound 00:52:45.420 --> 00:52:46.420 but they're actually eternal issues 00:52:47.420 --> 00:52:49.420 that the big problems of humanity 00:52:50.420 --> 00:52:51.420 are not going to be solved by economics 00:52:52.420 --> 00:52:53.420 they're not going to be solved by education 00:52:54.420 --> 00:52:55.420 it's not going to be solved by environmental improvements 00:52:55.420 --> 00:52:58.420 all of which have their place in a particular realm 00:52:59.420 --> 00:53:00.420 but not in this realm 00:53:01.420 --> 00:53:03.420 because the biggest problems that humanity has 00:53:04.420 --> 00:53:05.420 that society has 00:53:06.420 --> 00:53:07.420 that if we take it personally 00:53:07.420 --> 00:53:08.420 the biggest problems that we have by nature 00:53:09.420 --> 00:53:10.420 it's not the problems that are out there 00:53:10.420 --> 00:53:11.420 it's the problems that are in here 00:53:12.420 --> 00:53:14.420 and this is telling us that 00:53:15.420 --> 00:53:16.420 on the cross itself 00:53:17.420 --> 00:53:19.420 judgment for this world is going to be there 00:53:20.420 --> 00:53:21.420 because what's going to happen on this cross 00:53:22.420 --> 00:53:24.420 well the only person who ever walked on this earth 00:53:24.420 --> 00:53:27.420 the only person who perfectly loved God 00:53:27.420 --> 00:53:29.420 with all of his heart, soul, strength and mind 00:53:30.420 --> 00:53:33.420 the only person who perfectly loved his neighbour as himself 00:53:34.420 --> 00:53:35.420 the only one who lived a truly perfect life 00:53:36.420 --> 00:53:37.420 what did we do to him? 00:53:38.420 --> 00:53:39.420 well we killed him didn't we? 00:53:40.420 --> 00:53:42.420 what did we do to the Saviour of the world? 00:53:43.420 --> 00:53:44.420 well we put him to death 00:53:45.420 --> 00:53:46.420 we hung him on a cross 00:53:46.420 --> 00:53:47.420 we nailed him to a cross 00:53:47.420 --> 00:53:48.420 and we left him there to die 00:53:48.420 --> 00:53:51.420 and Jesus is saying that there is no judgment 00:53:52.420 --> 00:53:53.420 judgment is coming 00:53:54.420 --> 00:53:55.420 and judgment is 00:53:56.420 --> 00:53:59.420 it culminates on that work on the cross 00:54:00.420 --> 00:54:01.420 the second thing that Jesus sees 00:54:01.420 --> 00:54:03.420 by way of an external impact of this hour 00:54:04.420 --> 00:54:04.420 00:54:05.420 --> 00:54:06.420 now verse 31 00:54:07.420 --> 00:54:08.420 will the ruler of this world be cast out? 00:54:09.420 --> 00:54:11.420 that what's going to happen on this cross at Calvary 00:54:11.420 --> 00:54:14.420 as the Father is glorified 00:54:14.420 --> 00:54:19.420 is that this work will simultaneously be fatal to Satan 00:54:20.420 --> 00:54:23.420 will be fatal to Satan 00:54:24.420 --> 00:54:27.420 that Satan as he thinks 00:54:28.420 --> 00:54:32.420 he finally has the eternal Son of God 00:54:33.420 --> 00:54:34.420 what he wants him to be 00:54:35.420 --> 00:54:36.420 upon a cross 00:54:36.420 --> 00:54:40.420 with the weapon that he thinks 00:54:41.420 --> 00:54:42.420 is the most suitable weapon 00:54:43.420 --> 00:54:44.420 in his arsenal 00:54:45.420 --> 00:54:47.420 to destroy Jesus Christ once and for all 00:54:48.420 --> 00:54:49.420 is going to find out 00:54:50.420 --> 00:54:53.420 that what he thinks is his greatest moment of triumph 00:54:54.420 --> 00:54:57.420 is actually the moment of his ultimate defeat 00:54:58.420 --> 00:55:00.420 because Jesus has told us 00:55:01.420 --> 00:55:02.420 didn't he in John's Gospel a couple of chapters back 00:55:03.420 --> 00:55:04.420 he said no one is going to take my life from me 00:55:04.420 --> 00:55:06.420 I will lay it down 00:55:07.420 --> 00:55:08.420 and I will take it back up again 00:55:09.420 --> 00:55:10.420 so Satan thinking 00:55:11.420 --> 00:55:12.420 this weapon of death 00:55:13.420 --> 00:55:14.420 that is going to somehow extinguish 00:55:15.420 --> 00:55:16.420 the light of the world 00:55:17.420 --> 00:55:17.420 00:55:18.420 --> 00:55:20.420 he thinks that this is his moment 00:55:21.420 --> 00:55:22.420 that this is where he is ruling 00:55:22.420 --> 00:55:22.420 00:55:23.420 --> 00:55:24.420 and he doesn't seem to appreciate 00:55:25.420 --> 00:55:27.420 that the work that's about to unfold 00:55:28.420 --> 00:55:29.420 will mean that the ruler of this world 00:55:30.420 --> 00:55:30.420 00:55:31.420 --> 00:55:32.420 his power broken 00:55:32.420 --> 00:55:37.420 never to be restored again 00:55:38.420 --> 00:55:39.420 and so the defeat of Satan 00:55:40.420 --> 00:55:41.420 is going to be 00:55:42.420 --> 00:55:44.420 so clearly in view in that sense 00:55:45.420 --> 00:55:47.420 Satan is so foolish 00:55:48.420 --> 00:55:49.420 as he sees Jesus 00:55:50.420 --> 00:55:51.420 as he sees him breathe his last 00:55:52.420 --> 00:55:53.420 he's so foolish 00:55:53.420 --> 00:55:54.420 he thinks he's now got his empire established 00:55:55.420 --> 00:55:57.420 and yet his empire is as strong as a sandcastle 00:55:58.420 --> 00:55:59.420 with the tide coming in 00:55:59.420 --> 00:56:00.420 because you know what it's like 00:56:00.420 --> 00:56:01.420 and the tide's coming in 00:56:02.420 --> 00:56:03.420 and slowly but surely 00:56:03.420 --> 00:56:04.420 you know that sandcastle is going to fall over 00:56:05.420 --> 00:56:06.420 and as he sees 00:56:07.420 --> 00:56:09.420 as he sees the Lord of Glory breathe his last 00:56:10.420 --> 00:56:11.420 no doubt he rejoices 00:56:12.420 --> 00:56:13.420 only to realise 00:56:14.420 --> 00:56:14.420 00:56:15.420 --> 00:56:16.420 three days later 00:56:16.420 --> 00:56:17.420 that the very Lord of Glory is back 00:56:18.420 --> 00:56:19.420 death defeated 00:56:20.420 --> 00:56:20.420 00:56:20.420 --> 00:56:23.420 so the external impact 00:56:23.420 --> 00:56:24.420 of the our coming 00:56:24.420 --> 00:56:26.420 is that there is judgement 00:56:27.420 --> 00:56:27.420 00:56:28.420 --> 00:56:29.420 that Satan's power 00:56:30.420 --> 00:56:30.420 00:56:31.420 --> 00:56:32.420 once and for all 00:56:32.420 --> 00:56:33.420 that there is a new king in town 00:56:34.420 --> 00:56:35.420 that there is a new king 00:56:35.420 --> 00:56:37.420 who has dealt with the old king 00:56:38.420 --> 00:56:38.420 00:56:39.420 --> 00:56:40.420 Revelation tells us 00:56:40.420 --> 00:56:41.420 in chapter 11 00:56:41.420 --> 00:56:42.420 verse 15 00:56:42.420 --> 00:56:43.420 the kingdom of the world 00:56:43.420 --> 00:56:44.420 has become the kingdom 00:56:44.420 --> 00:56:45.420 of our Lord 00:56:46.420 --> 00:56:47.420 and of his Christ 00:56:48.420 --> 00:56:49.420 and he shall reign 00:56:50.420 --> 00:56:50.420 00:56:51.420 --> 00:56:51.420 00:56:52.420 --> 00:56:53.420 the third 00:56:54.420 --> 00:56:55.420 external impact 00:56:55.420 --> 00:56:56.420 is that Jesus 00:56:57.420 --> 00:56:58.420 will draw all people 00:56:58.420 --> 00:56:58.420 00:56:59.420 --> 00:57:00.420 and so now we get back 00:57:01.420 --> 00:57:02.420 to where we started 00:57:02.420 --> 00:57:03.420 this is where Jesus 00:57:03.420 --> 00:57:04.420 will draw all people 00:57:05.420 --> 00:57:06.420 to himself 00:57:07.420 --> 00:57:08.420 this is what he said here 00:57:08.420 --> 00:57:09.420 verse 32 00:57:09.420 --> 00:57:11.420 when I am lifted up 00:57:11.420 --> 00:57:13.420 I will draw all people 00:57:13.420 --> 00:57:14.420 and so we are thinking now 00:57:15.420 --> 00:57:16.420 of outstretched arms 00:57:18.420 --> 00:57:19.420 entreating 00:57:20.420 --> 00:57:20.420 00:57:21.420 --> 00:57:22.420 may see 00:57:23.420 --> 00:57:23.420 00:57:24.420 --> 00:57:24.420 00:57:25.420 --> 00:57:26.420 of this Jesus 00:57:26.420 --> 00:57:27.420 of his identity 00:57:28.420 --> 00:57:29.420 and of his willingness 00:57:29.420 --> 00:57:30.420 to be found 00:57:30.420 --> 00:57:31.420 in such a position 00:57:31.420 --> 00:57:32.420 upon a cross 00:57:33.420 --> 00:57:34.420 to secure our freedom 00:57:34.420 --> 00:57:35.420 that all who will 00:57:35.420 --> 00:57:36.420 who will hear 00:57:36.420 --> 00:57:37.420 and all who will see 00:57:37.420 --> 00:57:38.420 will be welcomed 00:57:38.420 --> 00:57:40.420 that they will be 00:57:40.420 --> 00:57:41.420 that they will be 00:57:41.420 --> 00:57:42.420 that they will be 00:57:42.420 --> 00:57:43.420 that they will be 00:57:43.420 --> 00:57:44.420 that they will be 00:57:44.420 --> 00:57:45.420 something about Jesus 00:57:45.420 --> 00:57:46.420 that will draw them 00:57:46.420 --> 00:57:47.420 to him 00:57:47.420 --> 00:57:49.420 it's not that they are 00:57:49.420 --> 00:57:50.420 that they are driven 00:57:50.420 --> 00:57:51.420 to Jesus 00:57:51.420 --> 00:57:52.420 it's that they will be 00:57:52.420 --> 00:57:53.420 drawn to Jesus 00:57:53.420 --> 00:57:54.420 because as we 00:57:54.420 --> 00:57:55.420 as we think of 00:57:55.420 --> 00:57:56.420 what we are like 00:57:56.420 --> 00:57:57.420 and the gap 00:57:57.420 --> 00:57:58.420 that exists in our lives 00:57:58.420 --> 00:57:59.420 between the people 00:57:59.420 --> 00:58:00.420 that we want to be 00:58:00.420 --> 00:58:00.420 00:58:00.420 --> 00:58:01.420 that we really are 00:58:01.420 --> 00:58:02.420 we realize that we are 00:58:02.420 --> 00:58:03.420 not the way we should be 00:58:03.420 --> 00:58:05.420 and that deep down
