idolatry, 00:07:53.459 --> 00:07:54.040 sorcery, 00:07:54.379 --> 00:07:54.800 enmity, 00:07:55.379 --> 00:07:55.959 strife, 00:07:56.519 --> 00:07:56.959 jealousy, 00:07:56.959 --> 00:07:58.759 fits of anger, 00:07:59.779 --> 00:08:00.459 rivalries, 00:08:00.899 --> 00:08:01.519 dissensions, 00:08:02.060 --> 00:08:02.579 divisions, 00:08:03.319 --> 00:08:03.659 envy, 00:08:04.699 --> 00:08:05.419 quantity. 00:08:20.759 --> 00:08:22.979 It's that evil deeds by wicked men 00:08:22.979 --> 00:08:25.859 had multiplied to the point that the whole earth 00:08:25.860 --> 00:08:28.000 was filled with nothing but that. 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:30.000 The Bible says it was violent. 00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:30.519 violent. 00:08:33.580 --> 00:08:35.059 And there is the Lord, 00:08:35.139 --> 00:08:37.360 the covenant Lord over all his creation. 00:08:37.559 --> 00:08:38.200 Verse five, 00:08:39.159 --> 00:08:48.259 he saw that every imagination of the thoughts of man's heart was only evil. 00:08:48.259 --> 00:08:49.759 continually. 00:08:51.399 --> 00:08:54.919 God saw man's slavery to sin. 00:08:55.720 --> 00:09:01.100 He saw what's inside man and described it as only evil. corruption of our nature that is diffused into all parts of your being. 00:09:31.539 --> 00:09:32.980 I had to look up in the dictionary, 00:09:33.120 --> 00:09:34.639 what does diffused really mean? so were you. 00:10:41.039 --> 00:10:48.719 And so natural sinners cannot inherit the kingdom of God. 00:10:48.860 --> 00:10:51.539 It's impossible to have peace with God. 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:56.899 What that means is that as God is Lord over the whole creation, 00:10:57.759 --> 00:11:00.839 and his new kingdom of heaven and earth is coming, 00:11:01.980 --> 00:11:03.919 there will be no place close to Christ. 00:11:45.439 --> 00:11:47.500 Here's our second covenantal observation. 00:11:48.779 --> 00:11:53.419 The Lord's wrath burns against sin because he is good, 00:11:53.419 --> 00:11:57.360 and because he is just, he must punish evil. 00:11:59.459 --> 00:12:03.979 The Lord's wrath, his holy righteous anger, 00:12:04.219 --> 00:12:06.979 burns against sin because he is good. 00:12:07.979 --> 00:12:08.759 How could it not? 00:12:09.899 --> 00:12:12.139 And because God is just and powerful, 00:12:12.139 --> 00:12:14.319 he must punish evil. 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:18.159 The language to describe this to us, 00:12:18.799 --> 00:12:21.419 it's using something we can relate to. 00:12:21.519 --> 00:12:22.339 Look at verse 6. 00:12:23.419 --> 00:12:27.279 God saw the world that way, and God repented. 00:12:28.059 --> 00:12:29.179 The King James says, 00:12:29.879 --> 00:12:31.740 what he saw repented the Lord, 00:12:32.179 --> 00:12:34.559 that he had made man on the earth. 00:12:35.240 --> 00:12:36.000 Verse 6 says, 00:12:36.399 --> 00:12:40.000 it grieved him, God, at his heart. 00:12:41.419 --> 00:12:44.599 Well, we know from all of Scripture that God is spirit. 00:12:44.919 --> 00:12:45.860 God is not man. 00:12:45.860 --> 00:12:48.940 So God does not have physical eyes, 00:12:49.120 --> 00:12:51.620 but the language is that God saw. 00:12:52.460 --> 00:12:55.700 God does not have a heart like a man does, 00:12:55.899 --> 00:12:57.980 but yet God was grieved at his heart. 00:12:58.180 --> 00:13:00.899 That's our prophetic idiom from Moses' pen. 00:13:01.800 --> 00:13:04.340 We know that the eternal decree of God is immutable. 00:13:04.500 --> 00:13:05.440 It does not change. 00:13:05.440 --> 00:13:09.600 But yet, God's wrath against sin is so strong, 00:13:10.500 --> 00:13:14.740 the Scripture describes it as God repenting of what he had made. 00:13:15.360 --> 00:13:16.500 It's like God says, 00:13:17.200 --> 00:13:19.100 O creation, I am holy, 00:13:19.500 --> 00:13:23.260 and I made all my creation very good for my glory. 00:13:23.259 --> 00:13:28.480 But man's slavery to sin and Satan has ruined my world. 00:13:30.899 --> 00:13:34.500 And because he sits on the throne as Lord over his creation, 00:13:34.639 --> 00:13:38.919 the holy God cannot tolerate evil without responding. 00:13:39.819 --> 00:13:41.000 He is not distant. 00:13:41.659 --> 00:13:43.240 Our God is active in this world. 00:13:43.980 --> 00:13:48.039 And the just God cannot leave sin unpunished, 00:13:48.299 --> 00:13:50.139 or he would no longer be just. 00:13:50.139 --> 00:13:54.620 The God who created order, peace, and beauty 00:13:54.620 --> 00:13:58.460 won't leave his creation in chaos forever. 00:13:59.379 --> 00:14:00.340 He rules over it. 00:14:00.919 --> 00:14:01.519 It's his. 00:14:02.500 --> 00:14:04.519 He won't leave us to ruin ourselves. 00:14:05.340 --> 00:14:09.960 He won't leave his image bearers to self-destroy through 00:14:22.120 both man and the beast and the creeping thing and the fowl of the air. 00:14:23.120 --> 00:14:25.720 See, the animals were not God's image bearers, 00:14:25.860 --> 00:14:28.420 but they are being affected by man's sin. 00:14:29.840 --> 00:14:32.600 Because the second commandment is a prohibition 00:14:32.600 --> 00:14:34.720 against turning creaturely things into gods 00:14:34.720 --> 00:14:36.600 or worshiping something creaturely, 00:14:37.240 --> 00:14:40.340 we can infer that before the flood, people had done just that. 00:14:40.759 --> 00:14:43.560 That's what Paul roars about in Romans 1 and 2 as well. 00:14:43.559 --> 00:14:50.159 So the Lord will destroy both man and beast. 00:14:50.639 --> 00:14:53.299 You can almost imagine the type of idols they came up with, 00:14:53.419 --> 00:14:55.079 creeping things, the fowls of the air, 00:14:55.699 --> 00:14:59.179 because it grieves me that I have made them. 00:15:01.239 --> 00:15:04.879 God is all-powerful, and God is good. 00:15:04.879 --> 00:15:11.039 And so God must unleash his wrath to punish evil. 00:15:12.259 --> 00:15:15.740 We read in verse 11 that the earth was corrupt before God. 00:15:16.100 --> 00:15:17.700 The earth was filled with violence, 00:15:18.100 --> 00:15:19.799 and God looked upon the earth, and behold, 00:15:20.039 --> 00:15:21.659 he saw that it was all corrupt, 00:15:22.179 --> 00:15:25.960 for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. 00:15:25.960 --> 00:15:34.100 It's a real horror to think of what we deserve 00:15:34.100 --> 00:15:35.740 if we were left to
