And then he married her. 00:05:39.500 --> 00:05:44.060 And chapter 11 ends, if you look at the top of that page, with those ominous words. 00:05:44.900 --> 00:05:48.980 But the thing David had done displeased the Lord. 00:05:48.980 --> 00:05:52.620 And now chapter 12 starts with these words. 00:05:52.740 --> 00:05:56.920 The Lord sent Nathan, Nathan the prophet, to David. 00:05:57.300 --> 00:06:01.020 Now, I don't know whether you can imagine what it might be like to be Nathan. 00:06:01.480 --> 00:06:05.379 And the Lord sent Nathan to David. 00:06:06.100 --> 00:06:11.680 This has to However, Nathan has a plan. 00:06:37.920 --> 00:06:47.240 And he has very cleverly, instead of tackling the issue head on with David, disarms David with this story of a rich man, a poor man, and a Now, despite David's tenderhearted response, so notice in verse 13 that he openly confesses, still David is not sheltered from the consequences of his sin. 00:07:11.479 --> 00:07:19.060 Instead, we're told that the sword will never depart from his house, which becomes a sort of ominous heading for the rest of the chapters of 2 Samuel. 00:07:19.799 --> 00:07:24.459 And the more immediate consequence is that the baby born to David and Bathsheba dies. 00:07:24.459 --> 00:07:32.680 Apparently, it seems in verse 18, within a week of him being born, Nathan turns up when the baby is born. 00:07:33.399 00:07:51.319 And that child does live and is given a name or more accurately, two names. 00:07:51.480 --> 00:07:55.700 One, Solomon, meaning peace, and the other, Jedidiah, meaning beloved of the Lord. 00:07:56.520 --> 00:08:08.540 And then at the end of the story, you have this surprising kind of twist at the end as David defeats Rabbah and takes the crown on his head of their king and places it on his own head before defeating more of the Ammonite cities. 00:08:08.540 --> 00:08:12.840 Now, that's like a really super quick run through chapter 12 to get your bearings. 00:08:12.960 --> 00:08:17.620 Let me point out three themes in 2 Samuel chapter 12 for us this morning. 00:08:18.379 --> 00:08:24.100 The first one is this, the horrible selfishness of sin. 00:08:25.439 --> 00:08:28.439 I hope you saw when we did the family Bible slot as well. 00:08:28.520 --> 00:08:32.940 This is clearly the point of Nathan's story of the rich man and the poor man in the opening four verses. 00:08:33.680 --> 00:08:36.899 Let's just notice the detail together because it's really important. 00:08:36.899 --> 00:08:40.679 Notice that the rich man is dealt with very, very quickly in verse 2. 00:08:41.019 --> 00:08:42.439 He had many flocks and herds. 00:08:42.500 --> 00:08:43.199 That's all we find out. 00:08:43.500 --> 00:08:45.459 We just find out very briefly about him. 00:08:46.139 --> 00:08:51.079 But then when we come to the poor man, the narrative slows right down just to kind of emphasize. 00:08:51.259 --> 00:08:53.019 This is like an ancient highlighter pen. 00:08:53.299 --> 00:08:55.139 Let me tell you how poor this man was. 00:08:55.220 --> 00:08:57.740 Let me tell you how attached he was. 00:08:58.980 --> 00:09:01.559 So notice that he had nothing but one. 00:09:02.059 --> 00:09:03.600 Just one, not many, just one. 00:09:03.600 --> 00:09:06.899 One single, little, not big, not significant, not large. 00:09:07.460 --> 00:09:11.180 Ewe, not a stud ram, just a female lamb. 00:09:12.139 --> 00:09:13.200 Young, not old. 00:09:13.700 --> 00:09:17.860 And he bought it, presumably at significant personal cost, given the poverty of the man. to him, we're told. 00:09:55.100 --> 00:09:56.320 It's laid on really thick. 00:09:57.159 --> 00:10:00.100 And David seemingly has no idea at this stage that the story is fictional. 00:10:00.620 --> 00:10:06.040 So here is a man, a poor man with a single precious possession, a solitary treasure in the shape of a ewe lamb. 00:10:06.279 --> 00:10:12.540 And the rich man, with very many flocks and herds, he has a visitor, verse 4, a traveler who has come from him. 00:10:12.539 --> 00:10:17.699 And the rich man, we're told, refrained from taking one of his own sheep. 00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:20.459 Literally, the word there is to show compassion. 00:10:21.539 --> 00:10:28.120 The literal sense of it here is that the rich man shows compassion to his own many sheep, 00:10:28.339 --> 00:10:35.480 whilst at the same time having no compassion either on the poor man or on his single solitary young ewe lamb. 00:10:35.480 --> 00:10:43.200 In other words, the point of the story is that the rich man is more concerned for his own sheep than he is even for his poor friend, 00:10:43.800 --> 00:10:48.060 taking this precious lamb and killing it to serve up as a meal for the visitor. 00:10:49.039 --> 00:10:50.960 Now, David is outraged, isn't he? 00:10:51.320 --> 00:10:52.860 And he's really quick to pass judgment. 00:10:53.240 --> 00:10:54.320 He's the king of Israel. 00:10:54.659 --> 00:10:57.200 His job is to judge situations like that. 00:10:57.659 --> 00:11:03.480 He is the one who they bring in justices to when he declares what judgment will be given. 00:11:03.480 --> 00:11:08.080 And he is enraged by this story, enraged by the injustice of it. 00:11:08.139 --> 00:11:10.820 So he pronounces the full Old Testament judgment. 00:11:11.560 --> 00:11:14.100 A stolen lamb should be replaced fourfold. 00:11:15.019 --> 00:11:20.200 And the rich man himself, we're told, deserves to die, presumably because in stealing the lamb, 00:11:20.279 --> 00:11:23.800 he was guilty of, in effect, kind of kidnapping a child. 00:11:23.799 --> 00:11:31.379 And then having let David speak himself into a corner, Nathan delivers the sucker punch in verse seven. 00:11:31.620 --> 00:11:34.500 You are the man. 00:11:34.859 --> 00:11:36.139 What a brilliant story. 00:11:37.179 --> 00:11:39.059 But I want you to see with me what's really going on here. 00:11:39.159 --> 00:11:40.279 You see, think about it. 00:11:40.339 --> 00:11:42.079 How can David be the rich man? 00:11:43.240 --> 00:11:48.179 You know, if anything, David's crimes, which remember, are taking another man's wife, 00:11:48.179 --> 00:11:53.099 murdering her husband, and then taking her to be his own wife. 00:11:53.219 --> 00:11:54.599 Okay, those were his crimes. 00:11:54.959 --> 00:11:58.759 If anything, they are a lot worse than the crimes in this story, aren't they? 00:11:59.319 --> 00:12:01.079 The rich man in the story doesn't murder. 00:12:01.259 --> 00:12:03.539 I mean, the rich man in the story is despicable, isn't he? 00:12:03.539 --> 00:12:04.500 He's a terrible guy. 00:12:05.019 --> 00:12:06.339 But he doesn't murder anybody. 00:12:06.620 --> 00:12:08.159 He doesn't take anybody else's wife. 00:12:08.559 --> 00:12:09.719 He's inconsiderate. 00:12:09.799 --> 00:12:11.000 He's brutal and abusive. 00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:13.080 But he just takes a sheep. 00:12:14.419 --> 00:12:20.799 And yet David, in chapter 11, kills, commits adultery, and steals another man's wife. 00:12:21.659 --> 00:12:24.519 So what's going on in the story that means David is the rich man? 00:12:25.220 --> 00:12:33.399 Well, notice that what follows from being told that he is the man is this underlining of David's richness and of his wealth. 00:12:34.320 --> 00:12:36.899 You know, think about all that's yours, David, we're told. 00:12:37.000 --> 00:12:38.120 Think about where it comes from. 00:12:38.240 --> 00:12:40.759 You know, I anointed you as king, says God to David. 00:12:40.759 --> 00:12:42.179 I delivered you from Saul. 00:12:42.519 --> 00:12:44.580 Verse 8, I gave you your master's house. 00:12:44.860 --> 00:12:46.639 I even gave you his wives. 00:12:47.759 --> 00:12:49.799 And I would have added much more had you asked. 00:12:50.639 --> 00:12:58.159 Yet David, you have despised the word of God by killing Uriah and by means of the Ammonites, and you took his wife to be your own. 00:12:58.340 --> 00:12:59.139 You see, here's the point. 00:12:59.259 --> 00:13:07.639 David is the rich man, not because his crime is identical, but because his reasoning is exactly the same. 00:13:07.639 --> 00:13:17.360 So despite David having all that he could wish for, despite him having everything that God had given to him, still it was not enough. 00:13:17.360 --> 00:13:37.360 Now, when you understand that about this chapter, then what you see is a crucial fact about sin in the Bible, which is that whether it's stealing sheep or committing adultery or breaking and entering or disobedience to your parents or getting angry or lying or whatever else it is, behind those sins lies a heart of selfishness. 00:13:37.360 --> 00:13:37.879 Selfishness. 00:13:39.159 --> 00:13:39.600 Selfishness. 00:13:40.159 --> 00:13:44.639 The heart of the rich man was a selfish heart, and that's the heart of David. 00:13:45.840 --> 00:13:47.720 I think that's the center of this story. 00:13:47.840 --> 00:13:53.000 The main actor in the world is the selfishness of the human heart. 00:13:53.720 --> 00:13:58.500 A heart that thinks it can take whatever it wants, even if that means abusing whatever power it has. 00:13:58.500 --> 00:14:03.379 You know, to put it bluntly, David's sin is the action of a horrible selfish desire. 00:14:04.639 --> 00:14:14.759 But here's the twist, and that is that David finds it pretty easy to see that selfish desire in other people and finds it impossible to see it in himself. 00:14:15.940 --> 00:14:17.200 And that's what we're all like. 00:14:18.019 --> 00:14:23.860 You and I are really good at seeing other people's selfishness and really poor at seeing our own. 00:14:23.860 --> 00:14:28.480 And this story is meant to expose our own selfish hearts. 00:14:29.940 --> 00:14:32.800 Now, in a really important sense, David is a unique person in the Bible. 00:14:33.180 --> 00:14:34.840 He's the king of God's covenant people. 00:14:34.960 --> 00:14:36.279 He's a precursor of Christ. 00:14:36.399 --> 00:14:37.120 You are not him. 00:14:37.259 --> 00:14:38.180 He is not me. 00:14:38.779 --> 00:14:43.519 Yet still the Bible is consistent that this selfish heart of David is something that we all have. 00:14:43.519 --> 00:14:49.899 And whilst all sinful actions are not the same, murdering is morally worse than taking a lamb and feeding your guests with it. 00:14:50.220 --> 00:14:57.579 Yet still the point is here that the same horror of selfishness, this me first at your cost, lies behind all sin. 00:14:58.240 --> 00:15:00.720 And so if we're absolutely honest, we are all like that. 00:15:00.819 --> 00:15:04.059 The heart of the rich man is the same as my heart. 00:15:05.360 --> 00:15:07.279 But there's one last detail to notice here. 00:15:07.279 --> 00:15:12.919 So look at verse 9 and verse 10 and notice that David despises God in both those verses. 00:15:13.519 --> 00:15:18.159 So in verse 9, he despises the word of God, the word of the Lord. 00:15:18.439 --> 00:15:21.759 And in verse 10, he said to have despised the Lord himself. 00:15:23.199 --> 00:15:28.019 If you look over at verse 14, Nathan says that he has shown utter contempt for the Lord. 00:15:29.259 --> 00:15:32.259 Now, I want you to notice that that is a surprising thing as well. 00:15:33.360 --> 00:15:36.699 You know, David has despised Uriah by taking his wife. 00:15:36.699 --> 00:15:38.360 For sure, he had sex with his wife. 00:15:38.419 --> 00:15:39.179 He shouldn't have done that. show yourself to be that kind of brother, Cain, and you will face the consequences. 00:21:04.859 --> 00:21:08.059 Abraham has to send Hagar and Ishmael away because Sarah is jealous. 00:21:08.559 --> 00:21:11.240 Samson ends up being captured by the woman he shouldn't have been with. 00:21:11.680 --> 00:21:16.139 Hezekiah ends up losing the temple treasures to the Babylonian empire he showed off 00:25:45.380 --> 00:25:46.799 it can rip churches apart, 00:25:46.799 --> 00:25:48.879 it can ruin the witness of a lifetime, 00:25:49.259 --> 00:25:52.700 it can tarnish gospel ministry for years and years to come. 00:25:54.019 --> 00:25:56.460 That's not because sex itself is naughty or dirty 00:25:56.460 --> 00:25:58.460 or even because sexual sin is unforgivable. 00:25:58.919 --> 00:25:59.819 That's not true. 00:26:00.259 --> 00:26:02.460 God can and does forgive sexual sin, 00:26:02.619 --> 00:26:04.700 which is good because we're all sinners in that way. 00:26:05.879 --> 00:26:08.299 But despite living in a culture that doesn't think 00:26:08.299 --> 00:26:09.940 what we do with our bodies is very important, 00:26:09.940 --> 00:26:12.000 still the witness of the Bible in our own eyes we don't fight this kind of selfishness, 00:26:23.460 --> 00:26:26.299 it carries a particular destructive force. 00:26:26.779 --> 00:26:28.220 So we must be careful. 00:26:28.779 --> 00:26:29.900 We the Lord has set his love on Solomon. 00:27:24.700 --> 00:27:27.900 So much so that he was to be known for that love, 00:27:28.080 --> 00:27:29.860 named after that love even. 00:27:29.859 --> 00:27:33.339 So after all the chaos that marks the end of David's life, 00:27:33.539 --> 00:27:36.959 Solomon goes on to reign for a period of remarkable peace 00:27:36.959 --> 00:27:37.919 in the life of Solomon, 00:27:38.399 --> 00:27:41.159 when the nation of Israel enjoys the high point 00:27:41.159 --> 00:27:43.159 of their national life under Solomon's reign. 00:27:44.240 --> 00:27:45.019 who lays down his life on a cross, 00:29:56.579 --> 00:29:59.379 selflessly given into the hands of sinful men and women 00:29:59.379 --> 00:30:00.960 who called out for his death, 00:30:01.379 --> 00:30:05.019 that through him and his selfless sacrifice, 00:30:05.519 --> 00:30:07.419 we might receive eternal salvation 00:30:07.419 --> 00:30:09.819 and the final death of selfish desire. 00:30:10.740 --> 00:30:12.779 The parallels are all over this account, aren't they? 00:30:12.779 --> 00:30:14.839 You see, in 2 Samuel chapter 12, 00:30:15.039 --> 00:30:19.619 David's selfish sin leads to the death of his unnamed son, 00:30:19.839 --> 00:30:24.160 who is replaced by a son who becomes the great King Solomon. 00:30:25.119 --> 00:30:30.079 And in the gospel, it is the selfless love of God, 00:30:30.119 --> 00:30:33.639 which leads to the death of his only son named Jesus 00:30:33.639 --> 00:30:35.899 in the place of selfish sinners, 00:30:36.619 --> 00:30:38.299 who is then not replaced, 00:30:38.299 --> 00:30:40.319 but raised up to new life, 00:30:40.419 --> 00:30:41.980 to endless human life, 00:30:42.019 --> 00:30:43.279 as the King of God's people, 00:30:43.680 --> 00:30:46.680 the King of peace and prosperity forever and ever, 00:30:47.099 --> 00:30:49.359 wearing not the giant golden crown of Rabba, 00:30:49.419 --> 00:30:50.759 but the crown of God himself 00:30:50.759 --> 00:30:53.619 as King of kings and Lord of lords. 00:30:55.299 --> 00:30:56.759 Let me finish here this morning. 00:30:56.899 --> 00:30:59.079 The truth is that the story of David and
