you look at the book of Judges and as we look at this together this evening, 00:01:54.659 --> 00:02:01.019 what we see is a people here who have the offer of free delivery given to them. 00:02:01.019 --> 00:02:06.099 And they almost have it again and again and again. 00:02:06.959 --> 00:02:09.699 But they keep making a mess of it. 00:02:10.680 --> 00:02:18.840 There's a free delivery offered here and yet it's costly in some ways, not to them, but to the Lord. 00:02:18.840 --> 00:02:25.620 And as you look at the book of Judges, the period that we're looking at here is many, many years ago, 00:02:25.719 --> 00:02:29.800 many, many generations ago as we're going back into the Old Testament. 00:02:29.980 --> 00:02:36.759 But it's a period defined by disobedience towards God as we've read in these verses. 00:02:36.900 --> 00:02:40.259 That's why we took up our reading early in chapter 2. 00:02:40.800 --> 00:02:47.140 You see that the people of God were just becoming more and more unfaithful towards God. 00:02:47.139 --> 00:02:49.000 They weren't listening to him. 00:02:49.099 --> 00:02:50.000 There was rebellion. 00:02:50.519 --> 00:02:53.779 There was moral failure among the people. 00:02:54.619 --> 00:03:02.819 But interspersed in the book of Judges, you find periods of peace and periods of revival. 00:03:03.619 --> 00:03:06.819 But yet if you were to sum up the book of Judges as a whole, 00:03:07.279 --> 00:03:10.279 it's probably in a repeated verse that you find. 00:03:10.280 --> 00:03:19.539 In chapter 17, verse 6, and then in the very last verse of the book of Judges, chapter 21, verse 25, 00:03:19.840 --> 00:03:22.780 the same phrase is said. 00:03:23.800 --> 00:03:24.659 And it says, 00:03:24.659 --> 00:03:34.780 In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did what was right in his own eyes. 00:03:34.780 --> 00:03:41.379 This was the kind of attitude that prevails throughout the book of Judges, throughout this period. 00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:44.759 And indeed you can see it again and again in the scriptures. 00:03:45.520 --> 00:03:49.659 The people did what was right in their own eyes. 00:03:50.640 --> 00:03:55.139 And it's a pretty good description for our world today as well. 00:03:55.840 --> 00:04:00.960 The people we do right as we see it according to our own eyes. 00:04:00.960 --> 00:04:06.840 But what we find in this book of Judges is that God was gracious. 00:04:07.840 --> 00:04:13.060 He was right to judge the people because that is what he had said would come upon them. 00:04:13.860 --> 00:04:19.720 But when he sees a people who cry out to him, he relents and has mercy. 00:04:20.600 --> 00:04:23.939 And that's the story of our delivery as well. 00:04:23.939 --> 00:04:29.100 When you look at the history of God's people throughout the Old Testament, 00:04:29.100 --> 00:04:34.700 you see that before this period of the Judges, they had been held captive in Egypt. 00:04:34.980 --> 00:04:38.460 And God had redeemed them, delivered them from that captivity. 00:04:39.120 --> 00:04:41.820 And he'd led them 40 years through the wilderness. 00:04:42.080 --> 00:04:44.740 He'd used Joshua to lead them. 00:04:45.420 --> 00:04:47.879 He brought them safely into the land of Canaan. 00:04:48.600 --> 00:04:51.939 And he gave them promises that if they were obedient to him, 00:04:52.580 --> 00:04:55.320 that then he would be a blessing to them. 00:04:55.320 --> 00:04:57.620 If they would walk in his ways. 00:04:57.620 --> 00:05:02.660 But what we find is, again and again, the very opposite happens. 00:05:03.459 --> 00:05:10.459 In verse 7 of chapter 3, the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. 00:05:10.620 --> 00:05:15.500 They forgot the Lord their God and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth. 00:05:16.160 --> 00:05:17.879 So they turned to idolatry. 00:05:17.980 --> 00:05:20.740 They turned away from God. 00:05:21.340 --> 00:05:23.560 And how had this come to be? 00:05:23.560 --> 00:05:31.600 Well, a generation who had loved the Lord and seen his amazing works was now passing on. 00:05:31.720 --> 00:05:34.199 You see it as Joshua passed. 00:05:34.899 --> 00:05:39.120 And in verse 10 of chapter 2, it tells us there, 00:05:39.120 --> 00:05:54.500 There was this forgetfulness. 00:05:54.500 --> 00:05:56.980 There was this turning away from God. 00:05:57.100 --> 00:05:58.180 They didn't know God. 00:05:58.180 --> 00:06:02.500 And they'd forgotten all that God had done for them. 00:06:03.139 --> 00:06:05.480 And this is an ongoing problem. 00:06:06.240 --> 00:06:08.199 Ongoing to this very day. 00:06:08.540 --> 00:06:10.280 Where we forget about God. 00:06:10.780 --> 00:06:12.000 Turn away from him. 00:06:12.420 --> 00:06:15.379 And we forget what the Lord has done for us. 00:06:15.420 --> 00:06:19.060 And we think that we can just do what is right in our own eyes. 00:06:19.100 --> 00:06:20.600 And there'll be no consequences. 00:06:20.600 --> 00:06:29.280 But God is reminding them here and reminding us this evening that what we need is to see our need of deliverance. 00:06:30.040 --> 00:06:33.200 We need this deliverance for ourselves. 00:06:33.920 --> 00:06:37.379 And that's where we're going to focus on verse 7 to 11. 00:06:37.379 --> 00:06:40.780 Where we see this judge that God has raised. 00:06:41.020 --> 00:06:41.660 Othniel. 00:06:42.520 --> 00:06:47.320 Who comes to serve the Lord in the midst of the people. 00:06:47.319 --> 00:06:51.560 And there's lessons that we can take from this for ourselves. 00:06:52.180 --> 00:06:56.060 In particular, there's three lessons I want to think of this evening. 00:06:56.879 --> 00:06:59.800 And the first is disobedience. 00:06:59.800 --> 00:07:01.740 As we see it throughout this section. 00:07:02.120 --> 00:07:05.459 Disobedience leads to defeat. 00:07:06.680 --> 00:07:07.719 There's no alternative. 00:07:07.959 --> 00:07:11.240 Disobedience to God leads to defeat. 00:07:11.839 --> 00:07:16.860 But what we see here is that this defeat leads to a cry. 00:07:17.319 --> 00:07:20.000 They cry out to the Lord. 00:07:20.759 --> 00:07:22.719 And that is what we are to learn as well. 00:07:22.980 --> 00:07:26.339 That when we see the disarray and the defeat in our own lives. 00:07:26.639 --> 00:07:28.920 When we recognize the sin in our own heart. 00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:31.560 That we can cry out to the Lord. 00:07:32.240 --> 00:07:35.379 So defeat can lead to a cry. 00:07:36.259 --> 00:07:38.360 And when we cry out to God. 00:07:38.500 --> 00:07:42.639 Thirdly what we see is a cry leads to an answer. 00:07:42.639 --> 00:07:47.079 God gives a gracious answer to them. 00:07:47.319 --> 00:07:53.219 So the first thing we want to see here is that disobedience leads to defeat. 00:07:54.980 --> 00:07:59.719 How is the book of Judges profitable for us today? 00:08:00.159 --> 00:08:03.139 What's to be gained in looking at this passage? 00:08:03.259 --> 00:08:04.539 Or looking at the book of Judges? 00:08:04.620 --> 00:08:08.159 When people will say, but it's just the word from long ago. 00:08:08.259 --> 00:08:11.300 It's things that happened many, many years ago. 00:08:11.339 --> 00:08:13.740 It's not relevant to us today. 00:08:13.740 --> 00:08:16.840 Well as you read through the book of Judges. 00:08:16.960 --> 00:08:22.699 You see the people of God face the same problems that we face up to today as well. 00:08:23.259 --> 00:08:26.699 And we've seen the reality of it even in these last few days. 00:08:27.579 --> 00:08:29.800 You see the people of God here. 00:08:29.939 --> 00:08:32.100 They faced physical enemies. 00:08:32.440 --> 00:08:34.659 They were surrounded by enemies. 00:08:35.779 --> 00:08:36.759 So are we. 00:08:36.759 --> 00:08:41.200 We see that with conflicts going on around the world. 00:08:42.200 --> 00:08:48.000 The people of God here, they faced problems from the world, the flesh and the devil. 00:08:48.919 --> 00:08:49.960 And so do we. 00:08:51.080 --> 00:08:54.059 We face all of these things today as well. 00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:59.419 And they faced here, the people of God, a challenge to their faith. 00:08:59.419 --> 00:09:02.339 You see that quite clearly in verse 7. 00:09:03.099 --> 00:09:05.860 The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. 00:09:05.919 --> 00:09:07.419 They forgot the Lord their God. 00:09:07.479 --> 00:09:09.479 There was a challenge to their faith. 00:09:09.539 --> 00:09:11.620 And in that challenge, they forgot God. 00:09:11.979 --> 00:09:15.799 And that's the challenge that we face today as well. 00:09:16.500 --> 00:09:19.419 So we have all of these things to face up to. 00:09:19.899 --> 00:09:24.719 And it all boils down to our obedience or our disobedience. 00:09:24.720 --> 00:09:31.440 And the reality of disobedience leading to defeat is through for ourselves today as well. 00:09:31.960 --> 00:09:35.120 Because when we're disobedience, as you see there in verse 7, 00:09:35.200 --> 00:09:39.320 they forgot the Lord, served the Baals and the Asheroth. 00:09:39.399 --> 00:09:44.139 These were idols and worshipping false gods. 00:09:44.220 --> 00:09:45.620 That's what they turned to. 00:09:46.360 --> 00:09:47.060 And then in verse 8, 00:09:47.059 --> 00:10:11.259 But what's happening here then is too that God is still in the midst of them. 00:10:11.259 --> 00:10:18.100 And God comes in a gracious way to bring the judges to them. 00:10:19.039 --> 00:10:20.919 Now why judges? 00:10:21.879 --> 00:10:26.840 Why this phrase, the judges, or Othniel, as a judge? 00:10:27.379 --> 00:10:32.659 Well, as a reminder to us that disobedience faces judgment. 00:10:34.080 --> 00:10:37.019 And our judgment is before us as well. 00:10:37.019 --> 00:10:39.220 So when we are disobedient to God, 00:10:39.279 --> 00:10:41.179 and we do not listen to him, 00:10:41.240 --> 00:10:44.340 and we turn away from him and forget about him, 00:10:44.799 --> 00:10:48.639 it leads to a judgment upon ourselves as well. 00:10:49.279 --> 00:10:52.079 So God used judges to come. 00:10:52.799 --> 00:10:55.980 Because of their wickedness and their disobedience, 00:10:56.019 --> 00:10:57.100 that's what he used. 00:10:58.000 --> 00:11:00.559 You see, the people have been given clear guidance 00:11:00.559 --> 00:11:03.259 before going into the promised land 00:11:03.259 --> 00:11:05.039 of how they were to live, 00:11:05.639 --> 00:11:08.159 of how they were to be obedient to God. 00:11:08.279 --> 00:11:09.740 And in the book of Deuteronomy, 00:11:09.860 --> 00:11:13.039 one of the phrases that comes up a number of times is, 00:11:13.319 --> 00:11:15.100 Do not forget the Lord. 00:11:15.759 --> 00:11:19.620 When you go into this land that's flowing with milk and honey, 00:11:19.700 --> 00:11:22.639 it's got everything that they need in this promised land. 00:11:22.740 --> 00:11:24.240 And the gods sing again and again, 00:11:24.679 --> 00:11:26.620 Do not forget the Lord. 00:11:27.659 --> 00:11:30.259 And yet what happens in verse 7? 00:11:30.259 --> 00:11:33.039 They forgot the Lord their God. 00:11:33.879 --> 00:11:36.419 Exactly what he had said to them not to do, 00:11:36.819 --> 00:11:37.399 they did. 00:11:37.500 --> 00:11:40.399 They forgot the Lord their God. 00:11:41.220 --> 00:11:42.439 And over time, 00:11:42.600 --> 00:11:45.120 this disobedience against God, 00:11:45.159 --> 00:11:48.100 it just leads to a downward spiral. 00:11:49.100 --> 00:11:50.819 And it says in verse 8 there, 00:11:51.460 --> 00:11:56.840 The people of Israel served Cush and Rissathim eight years. 00:11:56.840 --> 00:11:59.639 Instead of serving God, 00:11:59.780 --> 00:12:02.080 they were in this disobedient way 00:12:02.080 --> 00:12:05.899 of serving a foreign god for eight years. 00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:09.460 It was torture for them 00:12:09.460 --> 00:12:12.080 because of their disobedience. 00:12:12.460 --> 00:12:14.120 And where did this lead them? 00:12:14.660 --> 00:12:18.720 It led them to worshipping the false gods of this king. 00:12:19.920 --> 00:12:22.080 The Ashtaroth and the Baals, 00:12:22.220 --> 00:12:23.800 all of these false gods, 00:12:23.799 --> 00:12:26.839 that's the direction that they went. 00:12:28.399 --> 00:12:30.419 So disobedience leads to defeat. 00:12:30.500 --> 00:12:32.579 But what's the lessons there for ourselves? 00:12:32.839 --> 00:12:36.019 Well, surely it's obvious as we look at this passage. 00:12:37.319 --> 00:12:41.979 What they did stands in stark warning to ourselves today. 00:12:43.059 --> 00:12:44.359 They forgot God, 00:12:44.959 --> 00:12:48.359 and it led them on a downward trajectory. 00:12:49.139 --> 00:12:52.599 And that's exactly what happens to ourselves today. 00:12:52.600 --> 00:12:54.680 If we forget God, 00:12:54.759 --> 00:12:56.259 if we turn away from God, 00:12:56.399 --> 00:12:59.960 it leads us down the wrong path completely. 00:13:00.940 --> 00:13:02.300 So what is God saying? 00:13:03.259 --> 00:13:03.980 God is saying, 00:13:04.279 --> 00:13:06.659 Don't compromise on my word. would we expect 00:13:26.240 --> 00:13:29.460 but days of judgment upon us? 00:13:30.120 --> 00:13:32.319 If we don't put his word first, 00:13:32.720 --> 00:13:35.860 if we don't put God first in our 00:13:48.399 --> 00:13:49.659 a generation comes 00:13:49.659 --> 00:13:52.639 who has forgot the work the Lord had done. 00:13:52.939 --> 00:13:55.279 It begins with that forgetting what God had done. 00:13:55.719 --> 00:13:57.579 Then it comes to forgetting God. 00:13:57.919 --> 00:14:01.159 And then it comes to worshiping false gods. 00:14:02.159 --> 00:14:04.379 And the Bible describes that as sin, 00:14:04.759 --> 00:14:06.779 sin that crouches at the door. 00:14:07.659 --> 00:14:09.459 It's waiting to attack. 00:14:09.599 --> 00:14:10.479 It's waiting to come in. 00:14:10.480 --> 00:14:12.659 And all we have to do is give it an inch 00:14:12.659 --> 00:14:16.659 and it'll keep taking more and more. 00:14:16.759 --> 00:14:18.639 A small compromise here 00:14:18.639 --> 00:14:20.620 leads to another that's bigger 00:14:20.620 --> 00:14:23.519 and it leads to this downward spiral. 00:14:24.320 --> 00:14:27.840 So we don't let God's commands slip. 00:14:29.060 --> 00:14:33.100 You see, disobedience leads to defeat. 00:14:33.100 --> 00:14:36.159 And if we continue in that pathway, 00:14:36.240 --> 00:14:37.759 if we continue in that way, 00:14:37.960 --> 00:14:40.899 we're only going in a downward spiral. 00:14:41.899 --> 00:14:43.320 So that's the first lesson. 00:14:43.379 --> 00:14:45.519 But there's a second lesson for us here. 00:14:46.000 --> 00:14:47.440 And we see it in verse 9. 00:14:48.620 --> 00:14:52.700 But when the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, 00:14:53.399 --> 00:14:55.460 the Lord raised up a deliverer 00:14:55.460 --> 00:14:58.240 for the people of Israel who saved them. 00:14:58.379 --> 00:15:01.500 Defeat can lead to a cry. 00:15:01.500 --> 00:15:05.220 Although they felt defeated. 00:15:05.399 --> 00:15:09.500 And here they are eight years serving this foreign king. 00:15:09.799 --> 00:15:11.799 Wondering probably how they've ended back 00:15:11.799 --> 00:15:14.840 in such a similar situation as they had in Egypt 00:15:14.840 --> 00:15:18.519 when they were serving the foreign gods there. 00:15:18.840 --> 00:15:22.039 Here they are again serving in a foreign king 00:15:22.039 --> 00:15:24.299 in a foreign land with foreign gods. 00:15:25.059 --> 00:15:28.000 But it's like the people come to themselves. 00:15:28.620 --> 00:15:30.519 They come to their senses. 00:15:31.500 --> 00:15:33.600 And when they come to that, 00:15:33.720 --> 00:15:36.440 they cry out to the Lord. 00:15:37.399 --> 00:15:39.639 And if we know that there is sin in our lives 00:15:39.639 --> 00:15:42.299 that's leading us on a downward path, 00:15:42.759 --> 00:15:45.259 that we have failed God by rejecting him, 00:15:45.379 --> 00:15:47.559 forgetting him, and rejecting his word, 00:15:47.899 --> 00:15:51.379 and the salvation offered through his son, Jesus Christ, 00:15:51.440 --> 00:15:52.559 what can we do? 00:15:53.019 --> 00:15:54.320 Where can we turn? 00:15:54.759 --> 00:15:56.320 Well, there is the lesson for us. 00:15:56.440 --> 00:15:58.500 Defeat can lead to a cry. 00:15:58.500 --> 00:16:02.500 And the people, they cried out to God. 00:16:03.379 --> 00:16:06.419 And we can cry out to God for help. 00:16:07.240 --> 00:16:09.639 In Psalm 107, it's a wonderful psalm 00:16:09.639 --> 00:16:12.840 that speaks so clearly of people in trouble. 00:16:13.720 --> 00:16:15.120 And as you read through it, 00:16:15.480 --> 00:16:18.519 you find four times different situations 00:16:18.519 --> 00:16:21.679 that people find themselves in various trouble 00:16:21.679 --> 00:16:23.580 is outlined for us. 00:16:23.580 --> 00:16:25.840 But in each situation, 00:16:25.840 --> 00:16:29.080 it's the same words that you hear repeated. 00:16:30.040 --> 00:16:33.180 They cried out to the Lord in their trouble. 00:16:33.860 --> 00:16:36.940 And the Lord heard them and delivered them. 00:16:37.420 --> 00:16:40.360 There's that wonderful repetition in that psalm 00:16:40.360 --> 00:16:42.420 that they come to that point 00:16:42.420 --> 00:16:43.660 where they see their trouble 00:16:43.660 --> 00:16:45.320 and they cry out in their trouble 00:16:45.320 --> 00:16:49.760 and the Lord delivers them out of their trouble. 00:16:50.520 --> 00:16:53.820 And that's the great promise that we have here as well. 00:16:54.420 --> 00:16:55.420 When the people of God, 00:16:55.480 --> 00:16:56.560 when they come to themselves, 00:16:56.660 --> 00:16:57.980 when the people of Israel, it says, 00:16:58.520 --> 00:17:00.140 cried out to the Lord, 00:17:00.260 --> 00:17:02.240 the Lord raised up a deliverer 00:17:02.240 --> 00:17:05.700 for the people of Israel who saved them. 00:17:05.700 --> 00:17:09.600 Was this a cry of repentance? 00:17:10.640 --> 00:17:12.319 A cry of regret? 00:17:13.279 --> 00:17:14.779 A cry of despair? 00:17:16.160 --> 00:17:18.160 It's maybe not clear for us, 00:17:18.220 --> 00:17:20.360 but what we need to do is recognize 00:17:20.360 -->
