We're in the book of Luke. 00:00:44.340 --> 00:00:49.760 We started actually at the Lessons in Carol service with the nativity passages from the book of Luke. 00:00:49.759 --> 00:00:55.119 And we're continuing through the life of Jesus according to St. Luke. 00:00:55.619 --> 00:01:00.339 And we come to quite the epic passage. 00:01:01.019 --> 00:01:12.219 And before we dive into this passage that depicts the battle, that recounts the battle between Jesus and our great enemy, Satan, in the wilderness, 00:01:12.739 --> 00:01:14.900 I'd like to prepare us in two ways. 00:01:14.900 --> 00:01:18.120 The first thing I'd like to do is to show you an icon. 00:01:19.640 --> 00:01:26.400 This icon is called the Christ Pantocrator, or Christ Almighty. 00:01:26.560 --> 00:01:31.840 It is one of those common religious images in Orthodox Christianity. 00:01:32.520 --> 00:01:33.400 And it's one of the oldest. 00:01:33.660 --> 00:01:37.580 And this particular painting, this particular version of this icon, 00:01:38.620 --> 00:01:42.640 is the oldest surviving example of the Christ Pantocrator. 00:01:42.640 --> 00:01:46.859 It's found at St. Catherine's Monastery in the Sinai Desert. 00:01:48.099 --> 00:01:53.319 You'll notice the Gospels in his left hand, and the sign of teaching made by his right. 00:01:53.420 --> 00:01:59.060 Now, a curious feature of this icon is the face, which we can zoom in to. 00:01:59.740 --> 00:02:01.740 You'll notice the asymmetry there. 00:02:02.439 --> 00:02:09.860 One half representing the divine nature of Jesus, and the other half the human nature. 00:02:09.860 --> 00:02:19.340 Now, icons are meant to teach, to instill virtue, and to remind people looking at them of various things. 00:02:19.580 --> 00:02:23.440 This icon reminds us of Christ's two natures. 00:02:23.860 --> 00:02:26.760 He is both fully God and fully man. 00:02:27.320 --> 00:02:34.900 We must remember this when we read about this epic battle between Satan and Jesus that we heard about in the book of Luke. 00:02:34.900 --> 00:02:40.520 Now, it's easy to write off these temptations as really being temptations. 00:02:41.020 --> 00:02:42.900 I mean, they couldn't have been all that difficult. 00:02:43.060 --> 00:02:44.759 Jesus is fully God, after all. 00:02:44.800 --> 00:02:46.420 There's no way he was going to sin. 00:02:46.980 --> 00:02:52.379 But he's also and completely, fully man. 00:02:52.379 --> 00:03:00.159 The writer of Hebrews states that he had to be made like his brothers in every way. 00:03:01.099 --> 00:03:03.120 He didn't merely resemble humankind. 00:03:03.900 --> 00:03:09.960 He was, in every way, in all things, in all respects, fully human. 00:03:10.340 --> 00:03:16.319 With a fully human mind, and a fully human body, and fully human desires. 00:03:16.900 --> 00:03:18.719 Yet, without sin. 00:03:18.719 --> 00:03:23.819 So, when we read that he was tempted, he really was. 00:03:24.759 --> 00:03:25.240 Truly. 00:03:26.259 --> 00:03:26.780 Tempted. 00:03:28.060 --> 00:03:31.719 The second thing I'd like to do is some imaginative work. 00:03:31.800 --> 00:03:37.020 Not imagine, like, things that aren't, like, fairy tales and fantasies and such. 00:03:37.120 --> 00:03:42.300 But the kind of imagination you use when you try and remember what color is your mother's eyes, right? 00:03:42.960 --> 00:03:44.860 Human beings have the gift of imagination. 00:03:44.860 --> 00:03:48.620 Being able to see things with our mind's eye that we can't with our physical eyes. 00:03:49.180 --> 00:03:50.380 So, let's do that. 00:03:50.840 --> 00:03:59.600 Because Jesus was fully man, the writer to the Hebrews writes that we do not have a high priest who was unable to sympathize with our weaknesses. 00:03:59.920 --> 00:04:05.840 But one who, in every respect, has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 00:04:05.840 --> 00:04:17.300 So, if he can sympathize with us, I'd like to suggest that because he was fully human, we can sympathize with him, too. 00:04:18.060 --> 00:04:25.500 In other words, because he was fully human, he probably stubbed his toe or banged his shin. 00:04:26.439 --> 00:04:27.480 He definitely got hungry. 00:04:28.519 --> 00:04:29.959 We can sympathize with those things. 00:04:30.220 --> 00:04:32.459 We can sympathize with missing a meal, right? 00:05:47.899 --> 00:05:54.000 Now imagine an extreme version of that. 00:05:55.039 --> 00:05:56.539 Jesus fasted 40 days. 00:05:56.659 --> 00:05:59.839 It is rare but possible for a human to survive that long. 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:08.099 He would have literally been dying, crippled by both hunger and the difficulty of saying no to temptation. 00:06:08.100 --> 00:06:15.740 Do you ever remember having difficulty saying no to something while your body was weak? Lewis writes, 00:06:33.959 --> 00:06:40.279 A silly idea is current that good people do not know what temptation means. 00:06:40.879 --> 00:06:42.180 This is an obvious lie. 00:06:42.719 --> 00:06:46.639 Only those who try to resist temptation know how strong it is. 00:06:48.039 --> 00:06:53.699 A man who gives in to temptation after five minutes simply does not know what it would have been like an hour later. 00:06:54.879 --> 00:06:58.919 This is why bad people in one sense know very little about badness. 00:06:59.679 --> 00:07:02.539 They have lived a sheltered life by always giving in. 00:07:02.540 --> 00:07:07.800 We never find out the strength of the evil impulse inside us until we try to fight it. 00:07:07.960 --> 00:07:13.000 And Christ, because he was the only man 00:08:29.319 --> 00:08:31.040 There's a few running threads. 00:08:32.200 --> 00:08:35.639 What is so tempting about temptation? 00:08:35.820 --> 00:08:41.580 The first thing we notice is that Jesus was tempted to doubt God's word. 00:08:41.580 --> 00:08:46.780 Just before this account in chapter 3, verse 22, we read, 00:08:47.240 --> 00:08:51.759 the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in bodily form like a dove, 00:08:52.240 --> 00:08:53.759 and a voice came from heaven. 00:08:54.800 --> 00:08:56.180 You are my beloved son. 00:08:56.840 --> 00:08:59.040 With you I am well pleased. 00:08:59.639 --> 00:09:01.040 Jesus wastes, excuse me, 00:09:01.120 --> 00:09:05.740 and Satan wastes no time questioning those words. 00:09:06.140 --> 00:09:07.640 Chapter 4, verse 3, 00:09:08.200 --> 00:09:09.900 if you are the son of God. 00:09:09.900 --> 00:09:11.420 Did God really say that? 00:09:11.800 --> 00:09:14.660 Jesus, did the Father really say that to you? 00:09:15.520 --> 00:09:16.840 00:11:10.840 he will command his angels concerning you 00:11:10.840 --> 00:11:11.620 to guard you. 00:11:12.040 --> 00:11:12.840 And on their hands, 00:11:12.920 --> 00:11:13.840 they will bear you up
