which is such a wonderful passage of Scripture. 00:02:03.019 --> 00:02:07.980 And it's a section of the Bible that's so important for us as disciples. 00:02:07.980 --> 00:02:13.879 Because here, Jesus is teaching what God's kingdom, what life in God's kingdom should look like. 00:02:13.979 --> 00:02:16.379 And I think you've just gone through chapter 5. 00:02:16.500 --> 00:02:20.300 It's teaching you so much about what our character should be like as Christians. 00:02:20.620 --> 00:02:26.780 It's guiding us about how we are to bear witness and be a light to the world that's around us. 00:02:26.780 --> 00:02:35.060 It's teaching us about how we should understand God's law, how the Old Testament fits into the new, how we should see our response to that in our lives. 00:02:35.420 --> 00:02:42.300 And it teaches us about how we should react to situations, especially when other people teach us badly. 00:02:42.300 --> 00:02:52.039 And as I'm sure you've heard this many times, it is vital to remember that in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is not teaching you how to become a disciple. 00:02:52.400 --> 00:02:56.099 He is teaching you how to live as a disciple. 00:02:56.099 --> 00:03:05.259 In other words, this sermon is unpacking what being a disciple of Jesus should look like. 00:03:05.379 --> 00:03:09.900 And these opening verses of chapter 6 are teaching us some more crucial lessons. 00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:17.319 And I want to think about them under the heading Discipleship Unmasked, which I hope will make sense as we go through. 00:03:18.060 --> 00:03:21.259 The great theme of this sermon is that disciples are to be different. 00:03:21.259 --> 00:03:27.179 Disciples of Jesus are to be different. 00:03:28.319 --> 00:03:44.319 And so at work, at school, in our communities, we are to stand out from the brokenness and the selfishness and the hostility and the cruelty that we see in the world around us. 00:03:44.319 --> 00:03:50.659 As we follow Jesus, we are to be different in a beautiful way. 00:03:52.979 --> 00:03:55.180 But being different can be hard. 00:03:55.180 --> 00:04:10.800 And one of the reasons why being different is so hard is because if you're anything like me, you are constantly plagued with pressure and anxiety about what other people think of you. 00:04:10.800 --> 00:04:14.340 I want to share a story with you. 00:04:14.460 --> 00:04:18.639 I may have told this story before, so some of you might have heard it before. 00:04:20.259 --> 00:04:25.660 Back in Carloway, where I live, the house where we live in is close to the football pitch. 00:04:25.980 --> 00:04:28.240 And there's a local football team that we love to go and watch. 00:04:28.420 --> 00:04:30.560 So a few years ago, I went to watch the football team. 00:04:30.560 --> 00:04:37.480 And I took a football with us because Tom was wee then and the other, John and Annie were also small. 00:04:37.560 --> 00:04:40.180 So we took a football so they could plagued by that. 00:05:54.019 --> 00:05:55.339 You know, what do other people think? 00:05:55.699 --> 00:05:59.719 To give you another example, imagine you were wearing your pajamas right now. 00:05:59.759 --> 00:06:00.399 Would you feel comfortable? 00:06:00.399 --> 00:06:05.579 There's nothing uncomfortable about pajamas. 00:06:05.779 --> 00:06:06.719 They're actually very comfortable. 00:06:07.719 --> 00:06:08.679 So you could be sitting here. 00:06:08.759 --> 00:06:10.000 It would all be super comfortable. 00:06:10.120 --> 00:06:11.459 Would you feel comfortable in your pajamas? 00:06:11.459 --> 00:06:19.879 Well, I would not feel comfortable in my pajamas entirely because of what other people would be thinking. 00:06:20.099 --> 00:06:21.879 In so many ways, this plagues us. 00:06:21.879 --> 00:06:24.079 We worry about what people see and think. 00:06:24.159 --> 00:06:29.620 It applies in every area of life, in work, in school, in our community, in social media. 00:06:29.620 --> 00:06:36.160 And as Jesus highlights in these verses, that can have a huge influence on us as disciples. 00:06:36.360 --> 00:06:38.699 And Jesus wants us to think about this. going to think about contrasts, constants, and a question. 00:06:52.399 --> 00:06:54.639 And I'm delighted because all my headings begin with C. 00:06:54.639 --> 00:07:01.639 So, first of all, contrasts. 00:07:02.379 --> 00:07:03.919 Question I'd like to ask you. 00:07:04.419 --> 00:07:05.959 What's the opposite of a disciple? 00:07:07.740 --> 00:07:09.519 And you might immediately think, well, an unbeliever. 00:07:09.919 --> 00:07:11.879 And in so many ways, that is true. 00:07:12.539 --> 00:07:20.500 And in many ways, that's the key and ultimate and only distinction that will matter on the day of judgment. 00:07:20.500 --> 00:07:25.000 Whether you're united to Jesus by faith or not. 00:07:25.579 --> 00:07:28.480 Whether you are with him or against him. 00:07:28.899 --> 00:07:32.899 Whether you're on the path to eternal life or to eternal death. 00:07:33.540 --> 00:07:37.420 And so, at one level, you're absolutely right if you thought opposite of a disciple is an unbeliever. 00:07:37.839 --> 00:07:43.480 But for us as Christians, and so for those of you who are Christians or if you become a Christian, 00:07:43.560 --> 00:07:44.600 if you start following Jesus, 00:07:45.279 --> 00:07:47.519 in terms of how we live as disciples, 00:07:48.060 --> 00:07:49.620 the focus is a little bit more narrow. 00:07:49.620 --> 00:07:51.259 In this passage. 00:07:51.780 --> 00:07:54.899 And I want to suggest that according to these verses, 00:07:55.660 --> 00:07:59.379 the opposite of being a disciple is being a hypocrite. 00:08:01.220 --> 00:08:06.060 And that's the key contrast that Jesus is drawing before us in these verses. 00:08:06.780 --> 00:08:08.439 And so, in verse 1, he's got that great warning. 00:08:08.600 --> 00:08:14.699 Beware of practicing your righteousness in front of other people in order to be seen by them. 00:08:15.280 --> 00:08:19.259 And then he goes on to give three examples in this little section and the first following. 00:08:19.259 --> 00:08:20.300 He talks about giving. 00:08:20.620 --> 00:08:21.819 He talks about prayer. 00:08:22.120 --> 00:08:23.279 He talks about fasting. 00:08:23.480 --> 00:08:27.120 And in each of them, if you were to look down beyond verse 4, 00:08:27.300 --> 00:08:30.920 you'll see that Jesus says the same thing. 00:08:32.279 --> 00:08:34.120 Don't be like the hypocrites. 00:08:34.120 --> 00:08:42.080 Now, you'll maybe know that the word for hypocrite in Greek, it is the word hypocrite. 00:08:42.159 --> 00:08:42.700 It's a Greek word. 00:08:43.139 --> 00:08:44.879 And it's the word for an actor. 00:08:44.879 --> 00:08:50.220 And that's starting to help us to see and understand what we mean by this term. 00:08:50.419 --> 00:08:53.080 Because an actor is somebody who's pretending to be somebody else. 00:08:54.120 --> 00:09:01.019 And in the Greco-Roman world, stage acting actually very often involved putting on a stage mask. 00:09:01.379 --> 00:09:05.779 And you can Google Greco-Roman stage masks and you'll see them for yourself. 00:09:05.779 --> 00:09:09.299 And that's just a very vivid image of what hypocrisy is. 00:09:09.379 --> 00:09:17.539 You're kind of putting on an outward appearance, an outward mask that's hiding who you really are. 00:09:18.039 --> 00:09:20.620 And it's giving the impression that you're something else. 00:09:20.620 --> 00:09:28.539 And so in terms of our relationship with God, and in terms of our life as disciples, 00:09:29.580 --> 00:09:37.340 to be a hypocrite is to put on a mask of righteousness or anything else 00:09:37.340 --> 00:09:44.720 that is trying to give a good outward impression that will impress people. 00:09:44.720 --> 00:09:53.580 And Jesus describes here, sounding a trumpet whilst you give money to those who are in need. 00:09:54.600 --> 00:09:59.500 In the next verses he'll talk about standing in the synagogue or on a street corner, 00:10:00.220 --> 00:10:03.860 making a really eloquent prayer in front of everyone. 00:10:04.460 --> 00:10:07.139 And then he talks about disfiguring your face while you're fasting 00:10:07.139 --> 00:10:08.700 so that everyone can see that that's what you're doing. 00:10:08.899 --> 00:10:13.440 All of these are just drawing attention to yourself so that other people will be impressed. 00:10:13.440 --> 00:10:19.420 And Jesus makes it absolutely clear that is not the kind of discipleship that he's looking for. 00:10:20.360 --> 00:10:26.800 And for the hearers of the Sermon on the Mount, this would have been astonishing for them. 00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:36.020 Because the people that Jesus is being critical of were the people who everybody would have thought 00:10:36.020 --> 00:10:39.220 they are the most religiously devoted people. 00:10:39.220 --> 00:10:43.320 They are the experts in what it means to be spiritual. 00:10:43.940 --> 00:10:48.279 And they are at the level that the rest of us is trying desperately to match. 00:10:49.420 --> 00:10:51.800 And Jesus says, they're hypocrites. 00:10:53.720 --> 00:10:54.700 Don't be like them. 00:10:54.700 --> 00:11:04.759 That kind of outward show is not what Jesus wants us to live out in our discipleship. 00:11:04.780 --> 00:11:07.680 And I think there are many people here who can probably think of examples of this. 00:11:07.980 --> 00:11:09.120 You've maybe seen it. 00:11:09.180 --> 00:11:12.320 And people who have grown up in the church, I'm sure, will have seen it. 00:11:12.360 --> 00:11:15.700 Where you'll have seen somebody in one context, and then you'll have seen them in another context. 00:11:15.700 --> 00:11:18.400 And you're thinking, these don't match up. 00:11:18.399 --> 00:11:25.379 And it's something that people can find very off-putting and very disappointing when they see it in others in the church. 00:11:25.500 --> 00:11:26.539 But that's true. 00:11:26.600 --> 00:11:27.899 We will have seen it in others. 00:11:28.199 --> 00:11:33.600 But I've got to acknowledge that it's a trap that I've fallen into as well. 00:11:35.240 --> 00:11:41.959 It's an incredibly easy trap to slip into because we're worried about what other people think. 00:11:41.960 --> 00:11:46.600 All of this is coming back to some of the stuff that chapter 5 highlights. 00:11:46.940 --> 00:11:50.800 That as disciples, Jesus wants us to be men and women of integrity. 00:11:51.040 --> 00:11:58.420 That idea that our whole lives are integrated together, all of which are under the lordship of Christ. 00:11:58.879 --> 00:12:05.440 All of it is shaped by the gospel so that what we are in private, what we are in public, 00:12:05.440 --> 00:12:09.140 what we are to one person, we are to everybody. 00:12:10.460 --> 00:12:15.280 Jesus wants our discipleship, in other words, to be unmasked. 00:12:17.120 --> 00:12:25.020 And Jesus brings that out very clearly by drawing another contrast between the secret place and the public place. 00:12:25.660 --> 00:12:26.580 He does it in these verses. 00:12:26.940 --> 00:12:28.880 He does it in the verses that follow. 00:12:29.360 --> 00:12:33.800 Jesus is saying that these acts of righteousness, whether it's giving here, praying, fasting, 00:12:33.799 --> 00:12:36.299 they're actually things that should be done in secret. 00:12:36.579 --> 00:12:39.079 Here he's saying, look, don't broadcast what you're giving. 00:12:40.279 --> 00:12:41.759 Instead, just keep it secret. 00:12:42.899 --> 00:12:47.019 Now in these words, Jesus is touching on two things that we care about a lot. 00:12:49.240 --> 00:12:52.879 He's touching on our money and our reputation. 00:12:52.879 --> 00:13:02.879 And these are massively influential on us, both in the public place, among colleagues, friends, 00:13:03.139 --> 00:13:05.539 and also in the secret place of our hearts. 00:13:06.379 --> 00:13:11.220 I am quite sure that this week we won't even be able to help it. 00:13:11.299 --> 00:13:15.720 We will think and worry about our money and our reputation. 00:13:15.860 --> 00:13:17.879 In fact, these two things are very closely connected. 00:13:17.879 --> 00:13:25.279 Today, our reputation is massively influenced by how much money we have and by what we do with it. 00:13:25.340 --> 00:13:29.700 So it's money that's going to give you the clothes or the phone or the car or the address or the watch 00:13:29.700 --> 00:13:35.100 that will make people think, wow, wow, they've made it. 00:13:35.639 --> 00:13:36.379 They've done well. 00:13:36.960 --> 00:13:41.399 And our culture cannot break that connection between money and reputation. 00:13:41.559 --> 00:13:43.779 So if you're minted, then you're admired. 00:13:43.779 --> 00:13:49.759 Now, often in instances, you get some very, very cultured Lord of the Rings and all these kind of epic films. 00:13:59.600 --> 00:14:03.139 So my film taste operates at a different level to that. 00:14:03.139 --> 00:14:12.039 So this, what I'm describing here, is illustrated magnificently in that outstanding epic movie, 00:14:13.039 --> 00:14:13.600 Dumb and Dumber. 00:14:14.600 --> 00:14:16.639 And that's my level of movie. 00:14:17.139 --> just this massive connection between money and reputation. 00:14:49.360 --> 00:14:52.879 It's interesting that in biblical times, 00:14:52.879 --> 00:15:01.500 there is a fascinating kind of connection and a fascinating contrast, 00:15:01.500 --> 00:15:04.779 because money and reputation are connected in biblical times, 00:15:04.899 --> 00:15:05.799 but in a different way. 00:15:06.559 --> 00:15:12.879 So today money and reputation are very much connected in terms of how much you have. 00:15:13.860 --> 00:15:14.840 In biblical times, 00:15:14.840 --> 00:15:18.419 it was more the case that your reputation was shaped by how much you gave. 00:15:18.419 --> 00:15:21.219 And so you can think back to the Old Testament, 00:15:21.379 --> 00:15:24.459 where a king that was just massively powerful and wealthy, 00:15:24.740 --> 00:15:29.419 they would demonstrate that wealth by giving lavishly to those who visited them. 00:15:30.099 --> 00:15:32.860 And so people who could give a lot, 00:15:32.979 --> 00:15:35.360 you know, were gaining a huge amount of reputation. 00:15:35.740 --> 00:15:37.839 There was the whole idea in that kind of culture 00:15:37.839 --> 00:15:41.879 of being like a benefactor and a sponsor of things in your community 00:15:41.879 --> 00:15:42.740 and things like that. 00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:44.620 And here, in this example, 00:15:44.620 --> 00:15:46.820 the religious leaders are kind of doing a similar thing, 00:15:46.879 --> 00:15:49.620 making a big public spectacle of what they're giving. 00:15:50.980 --> 00:15:55.639 But whether it's the kind of flamboyant generosity of biblical times 00:15:55.639 --> 00:15:58.159 or the extravagant spending of today, 00:15:58.639 --> 00:16:01.620 the dynamic behind all this is actually the same. 00:16:02.700 --> 00:16:04.179 It's all driven by the question, 00:16:04.600 --> 00:16:06.480 what do other people think of me? 00:16:08.500 --> 00:16:09.860 And as disciples, we'll act one way. 00:17:10.939 --> 00:17:12.419 In others, we'll act differently. 00:17:12.659 --> 00:17:14.539 And all just for this outward show 00:17:14.539 --> 00:17:15.259 to impress people. 00:17:15.359 --> 00:17:16.879 Jesus has just got no interest in that. 00:17:17.119 --> 00:17:18.279 And I love the fact 00:17:18.279 --> 00:17:20.740 that Jesus has no interest in that. 00:17:21.740 --> 00:17:23.079 And I think one of the big reasons 00:17:23.079 --> 00:17:24.539 why Jesus has no interest in that 00:17:24.539 --> 00:17:26.179 is because that kind of hypocrisy 00:17:26.179 --> 00:17:28.980 is in total contrast 00:17:28.980 --> 00:17:32.339 to the constantness of God. 00:17:32.339 --> 00:17:35.819 And that's the crucial point 00:17:35.819 --> 00:17:36.759 I want us to draw out here, 00:17:36.899 --> 00:17:38.539 that hypocrisy 00:17:38.539 --> 00:17:41.799 and that kind of inconsistency 00:17:41.799 --> 00:17:44.980 is the absolute opposite 00:17:44.980 --> 00:17:47.799 mind-blowing topic. 00:17:59.939 --> 00:18:01.299 How would you define God? 00:18:01.299 --> 00:18:02.619 But the amazing thing is that 00:18:02.619 --> 00:18:03.460 even though that's possibly
