left it all on the field of life. 00:00:59.500 --> 00:01:04.700 I put forth my very best effort to be faithful to God 00:01:04.700 --> 00:01:08.980 and fulfill his purpose for my life. 00:01:09.579 00:02:15.540 this second letter to Timothy, his son in the ministry, 00:02:16.860 --> 00:02:18.340 that this was his last letter, 00:02:19.200 --> 00:02:25.900 and that he was waiting in a Roman prison cell to be executed. 00:02:26.960 --> 00:02:29.659 Now some of you are familiar with the life of Paul 00:02:29.659 --> 00:02:36.500 and how he at one point was under house arrest in Rome. 00:02:37.460 --> 00:02:39.539 The book of Acts ends with him. 00:02:39.759 --> 00:02:41.419 He's under house arrest in Rome. 00:02:41.699 --> 00:02:44.840 He's chained to a Roman soldier at all times, 00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:46.359 but he has a lot of freedom, 00:02:46.759 --> 00:02:49.900 and friends and other people can come and talk with him. 00:02:50.060 --> 00:02:51.199 He got to teach. 00:02:52.280 --> 00:02:53.960 And it was during that imprisonment, 00:02:54.019 --> 00:02:54.780 with all that freedom, 00:02:54.780 --> 00:02:58.400 that he wrote the New Testament letters of Ephesians, 00:02:58.560 --> 00:03:01.240 Colossians, Philippians, and Philemon. 00:03:02.520 --> 00:03:04.020 Now this is not in the Bible, 00:03:04.240 --> 00:03:09.840 but tradition says that Paul was released 00:03:09.840 --> 00:03:12.879 after he appealed to Caesar that day, 00:03:13.000 --> 00:03:14.979 or at that first imprisonment, 00:03:15.360 --> 00:03:17.400 and that he did go to Spain. 00:03:17.699 --> 00:03:20.280 He's talked about that at the end of his letter to the Romans. 00:03:20.539 --> 00:03:22.240 He wanted to go to Spain and preach. 00:03:22.240 --> 00:03:26.300 He wanted to take the gospel to the western part of the Roman world 00:03:26.300 --> 00:03:28.600 because he'd always been working in the eastern part. 00:03:29.800 --> 00:03:31.920 Well, tradition tells us that he went to Spain 00:03:31.920 --> 00:03:32.800 and he came back, 00:03:32.860 --> 00:03:34.300 and in Rome this time, 00:03:35.500 --> 00:03:37.100 under a time of great persecution, 00:03:37.760 --> 00:03:40.200 he was put in a real prison, 00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:42.340 dungeon-lock prison. 00:03:43.500 --> 00:03:45.360 And it's from this prison 00:03:45.360 --> 00:03:48.740 that he dictated his last letter, 00:03:49.600 --> 00:03:50.820 his letter to Timothy, 00:03:50.819 --> 00:03:53.180 and he made this statement. 00:03:54.379 --> 00:03:59.840 It sounds like a final summary of his out in certain Old Testament ceremonies. 00:04:28.139 --> 00:04:29.420 In some of those ceremonies, 00:04:29.840 --> 00:04:31.879 when the wine was poured out, 00:04:32.879 --> 00:04:35.759 the entire --> 00:07:32.159 and doing God's will 00:07:32.159 --> 00:07:37.139 to be a great, noble cause. 00:07:37.139 --> 00:07:39.759 He didn't think he was wasting his life. 00:07:40.860 --> 00:07:42.759 Paul spent a lot of time 00:07:42.759 --> 00:07:45.759 being opposed, being mistreated. 00:07:46.680 --> 00:07:50.459 He spent several years in prison. 00:07:53.399 --> 00:07:56.019 Paul lived the kind of life 00:07:56.019 --> 00:07:57.800 that no one would choose. 00:07:58.219 --> 00:07:59.899 No one in their right mind 00:07:59.899 --> 00:08:02.399 would want to live the kind of life 00:08:02.399 --> 00:08:05.879 and be subject to all the mistreatment 00:08:05.879 --> 00:08:08.939 that he endured. 00:08:08.939 --> 00:08:12.800 But he considered that his calling. 00:08:13.620 --> use images of athletes. 00:09:25.019 --> 00:09:27.879 Paul liked to talk about runners. 00:09:28.220 --> 00:09:29.579 The writer of the Hebrews did. 00:09:30.220 --> 00:09:32.199 Paul, at the end of chapter 9 of Romans, 00:09:32.299 --> 00:09:33.980 talks about boxers even, 00:09:34.980 --> 00:09:35.759 wrestlers, 00:09:36.480 --> 00:09:39.980 everyone in Paul's day and in ours. 00:09:40.939 --> 00:09:43.019 We understand that Olympic-type athletes 00:09:43.620 --> 00:09:46.899 make all kinds of sacrifices 00:09:46.899 --> 00:09:50.120 to make the Olympic team, 00:09:50.600 --> 00:09:52.059 to go to the games, 00:09:52.679 --> 00:09:54.159 to run for the medal, 00:09:54.159 --> 00:09:55.839 I mean, think about it. 00:09:56.159 --> 00:09:58.259 They train for hours every day, 00:09:58.379 --> 00:09:59.819 eat only healthy food, 00:09:59.980 --> 00:10:00.959 and avoid anything 00:10:00.959 --> 00:10:02.159 that would be a hindrance 00:10:02.159 --> 00:10:03.339 or distraction 00:10:03.339 --> 00:10:05.759 to their efforts, 00:10:06.019 --> 00:10:06.679 listen to this, 00:10:07.699 --> 00:10:08.500 to win a medal. 00:10:09.899 --> 00:10:11.159 But we know in our day,
