00:01:04.519 But how often do we follow through on that promise? 00:01:06.539 --> 00:01:09.599 Think about when you sit in a prayer meeting or a small group. 00:01:09.819 --> 00:01:11.719 You go around and you share prayer points. 00:01:11.859 --> 00:01:13.879 You jot them down on a piece of paper. 00:01:14.679 --> 00:01:17.920 You pray for 10 or 15 minutes but then they're put in the drawer. what to pray for. 00:01:44.879 --> 00:01:53.739 But thank the Lord that he has given us instructions in his words that help us see what a biblical prayer life looks like. 00:01:54.920 --> 00:01:56.560 That's what we see in Ephesians 3. 00:01:57.179 --> 00:02:00.239 The Apostle Paul is praying for the church in Ephesus. 00:02:00.840 --> 00:02:03.879 And I think that this is a helpful model for us to pray. 00:02:04.620 --> 00:02:08.019 So this morning we'll be thinking about what it means to pray biblically. 00:02:08.020 --> 00:02:11.080 And ask three short questions of the text. 00:02:11.820 --> will help us to think about praying with the glory of God as our priority. 00:02:47.340 --> 00:02:52.120 So the first question that we ask of Ephesians 3 is. 00:02:53.000 --> 00:02:54.040 Who do we pray to? 00:02:54.520 --> 00:02:56.379 Verses 14 to 15. 00:02:56.700 --> 00:02:58.160 Who do we pray to? 00:02:59.480 --> 00:03:03.000 Now the prayer is quite interesting because of how it starts. 00:03:03.080 --> 00:03:04.760 Look with me at verse 14. 00:03:05.020 --> 00:03:06.340 Paul begins with, 00:03:06.460 --> 00:03:08.960 For this reason I kneel before the Father. 00:03:10.240 --> 00:03:12.460 Now what reason is he speaking about? 00:03:13.560 --> 00:03:21.860 Well as you look at the passage you've probably noticed that chapter 3 verse 1 and chapter 3 verse 14 start with the same words. 00:03:22.300 --> 00:03:23.439 For this reason I. 00:03:24.920 --> 00:03:30.540 And that's because verse 14 is a continuation of thought that started off in verse 1. 00:03:30.539 --> 00:03:40.759 It's as if Paul was going to go into the prayer in verse 1 but felt that he needed to say a little bit more about his ministry and about the gospel. 00:03:40.759 --> 00:03:47.199 And then in verse 14 Paul comes back to his original thought and says for this reason I. 00:03:48.979 --> 00:03:53.519 And looking at the context of these verses that come before the prayer. 00:03:53.520 --> 00:03:58.560 The reason that Paul is referring to is the mystery of the gospel. 00:03:59.680 --> 00:04:02.480 The fact that the gospel is now for all people. 00:04:03.400 --> 00:04:05.260 Both Jew and this reason Paul says I bow the knee and I pray. 00:04:23.979 --> 00:04:27.560 But do you see who he's praying to at the end of verse 14? 00:04:28.079 --> 00:04:34.819 He says he's praying before the father from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 00:04:36.819 --> 00:04:45.099 Paul is highlighting the fact that the dividing wall that existed between Jew and Gentile has been turned to rubble. 00:04:45.100 --> 00:04:49.360 God is not just the father of the Jews who believe in Jesus. 00:04:50.060 --> 00:04:54.340 But he's the father of all people who call on the name of Jesus. 00:04:55.800 --> 00:04:58.260 And this makes me think back to the Sermon of the Mount. 00:04:58.960 --> 00:05:01.800 Because in that teaching of Matthew 5 to 7. 00:05:02.460 --> 00:05:06.640 Jesus is lifting people's eyes to see God as a heavenly father. 00:05:07.439 --> 00:05:09.020 One who provides for. 00:05:09.800 --> 00:05:11.180 Cares for his children. 00:05:11.180 --> 00:05:15.379 And that's the idea that Paul is giving the Ephesian church. 00:05:15.439 --> 00:05:17.120 As he's teaching them to pray biblically. 00:05:17.939 --> 00:05:18.920 You pray to God. 00:05:19.480 -->
