00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:03.000
 Historic arrivals.

00:00:03.000 --> 00:00:06.000
 At the outset of World War II,

00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:11.000
 General Douglas MacArthur was forced to leave the Philippines

00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:14.000
 by occupying Japanese forces.

00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:16.000
 And so on March 12, 1942,

00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:21.000
 while departing the island of Corregidor in the Manila Bay,

00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:25.000
 Douglas vowed, I will return.

00:00:25.000 --> 00:00:30.000
 Now, after mounting a campaign to retake the Philippines,

00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:36.000
 about two and a half years later, October 20, 1944,

00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:43.000
 General Douglas MacArthur walks ashore on Leyte.

00:00:43.000 --> 00:00:54.000
 He eventually finds a place where he can broadcast this following sentence.

00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:57.000
 People of the Philippines,

00:00:57.000 --> 00:01:02.000
 I have returned.

00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:07.000
 The hour of your redemption is here.

00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:12.000
 Essentially, he's saying,

00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:16.000
 I have come to deliver you from enemy occupation.

00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:19.000
 It was a historic arrival.

00:01:19.000 --> 00:01:20.000
 But you know what?

00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:22.000
 He wasn't crying.

00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:24.000
 He wasn't weeping.

00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:27.000
 He wasn't wailing.

00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:33.000
 He came ashore in an army or a navy boat.

00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:39.000
 The Marines had already established a beachhead.

00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:51.000
 Palm Sunday is the Sunday during the church year in which Christians call to mind a historic arrival of another nature.

00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:57.000
 The day that Jesus Christ rode a cult into the city of Jerusalem around 30 A.D.

00:01:57.000 --> 00:01:59.000
 Now, we got to ask the question,

00:01:59.000 --> 00:02:02.000
 what's the big deal with that?

00:02:02.000 --> 00:02:04.000
 Because if you think about it this way,

00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:07.000
 here is a carpenter turned teacher

00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:13.000
 who is riding a donkey one particular day into a historic city in the Middle East.

00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:15.000
 I mean, it was 2,000 years ago.

00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:17.000
 We can ask the question, so what?

00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:18.000
 So a guy entered a city.

00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:19.000
 Big deal.

00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:25.000
 Well, we get some hints of some things in Matthew chapter 21.

00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:30.000
 Matthew records that when Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem on that day.

00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:33.000
 The whole city was stirred up.

00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:37.000
 They're asking the question, who is this?

00:02:37.000 --> 00:02:39.000
 Who is this guy?

00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:52.000
 Now, the big deal about the arrival of Jesus is who is arriving.

00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:56.000
 It's not so much about palm leaves.

00:02:56.000 --> 00:03:00.000
 It's about the one riding on the donkey.

00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:05.000
 The long awaited King.

00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:08.000
 The Messiah.

00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:14.000
 The one spoken of in the Old Testament Scriptures.

00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:18.000
 He has arrived in Jerusalem.

00:03:18.000 --> 00:03:25.000
 And as his little donkey makes its way down the Mount of Olives,

00:03:25.000 --> 00:03:30.000
 the Messiah is crying.

00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:37.000
 This morning, I want to walk through this story and I want to draw six C's out for you.

00:03:37.000 --> 00:03:38.000
 The city.

00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:40.000
 The control.

00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:41.000
 The cult.

00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:42.000
 The crowd.

00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:43.000
 The critics.

00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:44.000
 The cry.

00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:45.000
 The crowd.

00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:46.000
 The critics.

00:03:46.000 --> 00:03:47.000
 The cry.

00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:58.000
 What I want to help you see is this is not some ordinary Joe coming into this city.

00:03:58.000 --> 00:03:59.000
 So let's look at the city.

00:03:59.000 --> 00:04:00.000
 The city.

00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:01.000
 Jerusalem.

00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:02.000
 The city.

00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:03.000
 Jerusalem.

00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:07.000
 We see that in chapter 19, verse 28.

00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:13.000
 And when he said these things, he went on ahead going up to Jerusalem.

00:04:14.000 --> 00:04:17.000
 Jerusalem played a very prominent role in the life of Jesus.

00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:23.000
 If you remember, Jesus was presented at the temple 30 years earlier when he was just a baby.

00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:27.000
 Remember Simeon's cry in Luke chapter 2?

00:04:27.000 --> 00:04:29.000
 For my eyes have seen your salvation.

00:04:29.000 --> 00:04:33.000
 He's holding this baby up in the temple.

00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:34.000
 He's been waiting to die.

00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:40.000
 And God said, you won't die until you see the one.

00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:45.000
 For my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all people.

00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:48.000
 A light for revelation to the Gentiles.

00:04:49.000 --> 00:04:52.000
 And for glory to your people Israel.

00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:54.000
 It took place in Jerusalem.

00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:57.000
 And then, I relayed the story just a little bit ago.

00:04:57.000 --> 00:04:58.000
 Another sermon.

00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:00.000
 When Jesus was 12.

00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:02.000
 His family was in Jerusalem.

00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:04.000
 His family takes off.

00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:06.000
 He stays in Jerusalem.

00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:11.000
 Because he's hanging out at his father's house.

00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:19.000
 And then in Luke chapter 9, verse 51 and 53, there's a very important turn in the book of Luke.

00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:27.000
 We read that Jesus set his face toward Jerusalem.

00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:31.000
 Just moments earlier at the Transfiguration,

00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:36.000
 Jesus was speaking with bygone prophets.

00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:39.000
 And they were talking about the Exodus.

00:05:39.000 --> 00:05:44.000
 Jesus was about to bring about in Jerusalem.

00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:51.000
 Jerusalem would be the site of the greatest act of deliverance the world would ever know.

00:05:51.000 --> 00:06:00.000
 Eventually, Jesus would be tried, beaten, handed over, crucified,

00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:04.000
 within either within the city or within sight of the city itself.

00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:06.000
 And of course, after his resurrection,

00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:10.000
 he would meet with his disciples in an upper room in Jerusalem.

00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:16.000
 And it would be from the city of Jerusalem that his early disciples were sent out to the nations.

00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:21.000
 Jerusalem plays a very prominent role in the life of Jesus.

00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:26.000
 Jerusalem is also at the heart of the Jewish people.

00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:30.000
 It was the city of the king.

00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:31.000
 It was the city of God.

00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:35.000
 It would have been the cultural nerve center of the Jewish people.

00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:39.000
 It would also have represented the Jewish people.

00:06:39.000 --> 00:06:44.000
 And so the destruction of Jerusalem in 586,

00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:49.000
 it was understood as God's judgment on the people of Israel.

00:06:49.000 --> 00:06:53.000
 So when Jesus comes into the city,

00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:59.000
 he's actually coming into the city as their long awaited king.

00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:04.000
 And we got asked the question,

00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:07.000
 who is this guy?

00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:10.000
 What kind of king?

00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:12.000
 So there's the city.

00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:14.000
 Let's look at the control.

00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:16.000
 His control.

00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:21.000
 Now Jesus, this is in verses 29 through 34.

00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:25.000
 Jesus had been moving towards Jerusalem for the last several months,

00:07:25.000 --> 00:07:28.000
 very intentionally moving towards Jerusalem.

00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:32.000
 And he had a specific timeframe in mind.

00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:37.000
 It's very important to get this.

00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:42.000
 Back in Luke 9 51, when Jesus set his face towards Jerusalem,

00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:45.000
 he was on a time schedule.

00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:51.000
 He wanted to walk into Jerusalem at the beginning of the Passover celebration.

00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:56.000
 He wanted to be getting there right when Passover was happening.

00:07:56.000 --> 00:08:00.000
 And so it's a picture of his purposefulness.

00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:03.000
 This is not random, a random entry.

00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:06.000
 The timing is very important.

00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:11.000
 And so in earlier in Luke 19,

00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:14.000
 Jesus is coming to Jerusalem from the east.

00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:15.000
 He comes through Jericho.

00:08:15.000 --> 00:08:20.000
 Now, you'll remember Jericho because of that little guy up in the sycamore tree.

00:08:20.000 --> 00:08:21.000
 Remember him?

00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:22.000
 Zacchaeus.

00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:25.000
 And so he has his exchange with Zacchaeus,

00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:27.000
 shares a parable,

00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:30.000
 and then there's the triumphal entry.

00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:33.000
 It's what we call the triumphal entry.

00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:34.000
 It's what we call the triumphal entry.

00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:37.000
 Jesus comes up through Jericho,

00:08:37.000 --> 00:08:40.000
 and he comes up to the villages of Bethpage and Bethany,

00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:43.000
 which were about a half mile east of Jerusalem,

00:08:43.000 --> 00:08:46.000
 on the other side of the Mount of Olives.

00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:53.000
 Jesus is being very purposeful to get to Jerusalem at a designated time.

00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:57.000
 And so as they get close to Jerusalem,

00:08:57.000 --> 00:09:04.000
 Jesus sends two of his disciples ahead to find a colt, a donkey.

00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:09.000
 Now, pay attention to the specificity with which Jesus instructs his disciples.

00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:12.000
 He tells them where to go, where they'll find a colt,

00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:15.000
 and they'll find a particular kind of colt,

00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:18.000
 one which no one has ever sat yet.

00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:23.000
 He also tells them what to say if they're asked why they're untying the colt.

00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:25.000
 It's very specific.

00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:28.000
 It's like he's in control.

00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:31.000
 It's like he knows what's going to happen.

00:09:33.000 --> 00:09:36.000
 It's down to the details.

00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:40.000
 A very similar thing happens later on in Luke 22.

00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:45.000
 Jesus says his disciples out again to find an upper room,

00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:48.000
 and he tells them just where to go, just what to do.

00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:50.000
 It's very specific.

00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:52.000
 As if Jesus knew what was going on.

00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:54.000
 It's like he had a plan.

00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:59.000
 He was working out the details in advance.

00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:04.000
 The intended effect of this is that Jesus is in control.

00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:10.000
 He's entering into Jerusalem, and he's already in control.

00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:13.000
 He's very purposeful.

00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:15.000
 He knows where the colt is.

00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:17.000
 He knows where the upper room is.

00:10:17.000 --> 00:10:18.000
 And he knows where the upper room is.

00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:19.000
 He knows what will be.

00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:20.000
 He knows where the upper room is.

00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:21.000
 He knows what's going on.

00:10:21.000 --> 00:10:22.000
 He knows what's going on.

00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:24.000
 He knows what's going on.

00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:25.000
 Who is this guy?

00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:28.000
 Who is he?

00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:31.000
 Who does that kind of stuff?

00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:44.000
 Getting back to the colt, notice that Jesus rides in in verses 30 and 31, that he sends his disciples to get a colt.

00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:49.100
 He's going to ride a colt, a donkey, into the city of Jerusalem.

00:10:49.259 --> 00:10:54.600
 And what's important here is what he's choosing not to ride into the city of Jerusalem.

00:10:54.940 --> 00:11:00.200
 He's not choosing to ride in a war horse, a charger.

00:11:01.080 --> 00:11:06.299
 I mean, a war horse would symbolize military might, dominance, power, threat.

00:11:06.299 --> 00:11:14.579
 Now you imagine with me two calvaries squaring off against each other on an open field.

00:11:15.179 --> 00:11:17.979
 In one calvary, 100 on each side.

00:11:18.459 --> 00:11:19.620
 It's even number.

00:11:20.079 --> 00:11:24.339
 On one side, there's a bunch of guys on donkeys.

00:11:26.599 --> 00:11:32.379
 And on the other side, there's a bunch of guys on armored war horses.

00:11:33.839 --> 00:11:35.299
 Two times as big.

00:11:36.299 --> 00:11:37.379
 Two times the attitude.

00:11:39.719 --> 00:11:40.859
 Who do you think will win?

00:11:45.699 --> 00:11:47.740
 A donkey would not be seen as a threat.

00:11:50.079 --> 00:11:51.959
 A donkey is a peaceful animal.

00:11:52.699 --> 00:11:54.000
 It's a humble animal.

00:11:54.000 --> 00:11:55.579
 It's a beast of burden.

00:11:57.759 --> 00:12:04.240
 Jesus very intentionally chose to ride into Jerusalem on a donkey and not a war horse.

00:12:04.819 --> 00:12:05.919
 He's making a statement.

00:12:06.299 --> 00:12:07.539
 I come in peace.

00:12:07.819 --> 00:12:08.740
 I come in humility.

00:12:09.159 --> 00:12:10.620
 I come to bear burdens.

00:12:13.000 --> 00:12:17.279
 And sadly, most of Jerusalem didn't see it.

00:12:19.939 --> 00:12:22.399
 Did you notice that Jesus was very specific?

00:12:22.939 --> 00:12:26.959
 That his disciples find a colt that no one has ever yet sat?

00:12:27.079 --> 00:12:27.579
 Verse 30.

00:12:27.659 --> 00:12:28.459
 Did you notice that?

00:12:28.460 --> 00:12:29.460
 What's up with that?

00:12:29.460 --> 00:12:30.400
 What's up with that?

00:12:30.400 --> 00:12:35.420
 Well, the idea behind it is that this particular donkey is reserved.

00:12:36.560 --> 00:12:37.500
 Set apart.

00:12:38.560 --> 00:12:42.460
 It's set apart for the first person to ride on it.

00:12:42.540 --> 00:12:43.240
 It's designated.

00:12:43.240 --> 00:12:46.240
 It gets that privilege.

00:12:46.240 --> 00:12:46.740
 It gets that privilege.

00:12:48.740 --> 00:12:51.279
 I mean, the owner of that colt didn't know it.

00:12:52.360 --> 00:12:53.600
 But Jesus did.

00:12:55.600 --> 00:13:05.860
 The colt would be the colt that bore the privilege of carrying into Jerusalem the long-awaited Messiah King.

00:13:05.860 --> 00:13:09.220
 Fulfilling a prophecy of 500 years earlier.

00:13:11.440 --> 00:13:13.460
 Speaking of the colt in prophecy.

00:13:15.379 --> 00:13:21.120
 When Jesus tells his disciples to go into the village to find this unsat-upon donkey,

00:13:22.120 --> 00:13:24.399
 he anticipates that someone's going to ask,

00:13:24.659 --> 00:13:27.779
 Hey, hey, why are you untying the donkey?

00:13:27.779 --> 00:13:32.259
 And Jesus tells his disciples to tell the one who asks,

00:13:33.199 --> 00:13:35.039
 The Lord has need of it.

00:13:37.740 --> 00:13:41.759
 Now, Jesus doesn't go into detail about what kind of need he has for it.

00:13:41.759 --> 00:13:42.699
 He just kind of says,

00:13:43.199 --> 00:13:44.600
 Just tell them I need it.

00:13:47.799 --> 00:13:51.679
 What kind of need does Jesus have for a donkey?

00:13:54.240 --> 00:13:55.639
 Maybe he loves donkeys.

00:13:55.639 --> 00:13:58.299
 Maybe he's an animal lover.

00:13:59.059 --> 00:14:02.199
 And he heard that there's a wonderful donkey in Bethany.

00:14:03.759 --> 00:14:05.080
 He really likes them.

00:14:05.319 --> 00:14:05.939
 That's not it.

00:14:08.639 --> 00:14:10.379
 Maybe he's in need of transportation.

00:14:11.679 --> 00:14:16.639
 Maybe the half mile from Bethany to Jerusalem is just too much for him to bear.

00:14:19.259 --> 00:14:20.279
 Jesus is tired.

00:14:20.399 --> 00:14:21.059
 He needs a lift.

00:14:21.279 --> 00:14:22.120
 That's not it.

00:14:22.120 --> 00:14:26.240
 What's the need?

00:14:28.539 --> 00:14:30.139
 The need is to fulfill prophecy.

00:14:32.940 --> 00:14:38.659
 Jesus needs to ride into Jerusalem on a donkey in order to fulfill Zechariah 9.9.

00:14:39.539 --> 00:14:41.860
 If you'd open up your Bibles, I know what you're thinking.

00:14:42.120 --> 00:14:46.379
 I think Zechariah is one of the minor prophets, and I don't know where it is.

00:14:46.899 --> 00:14:47.539
 Here's what to do.

00:14:47.539 --> 00:14:50.959
 Go to Matthew.

00:14:51.659 --> 00:14:52.719
 Page left.

00:14:53.159 --> 00:14:55.779
 The last book of the Old Testament is Malachi.

00:14:56.379 --> 00:15:00.179
 And the second to the last book of the Old Testament is Zechariah.

00:15:00.899 --> 00:15:04.539
 So second to the last book of the English Bible, Zechariah.

00:15:05.299 --> 00:15:07.959
 And if you would turn to Zechariah 9.9,

00:15:08.679 --> 00:15:10.500
 we're going to read that together.

00:15:10.500 --> 00:15:15.759
 Because anyone with a sense of biblical prophecy,

00:15:15.940 --> 00:15:18.679
 when they would hear that Jesus is coming in a donkey,

00:15:19.039 --> 00:15:22.240
 what would jump into their minds would be Zechariah 9.9.

00:15:25.240 --> 00:15:33.419
 It's a prophecy of how the Messiah will enter into Jerusalem in order to establish his kingdom.

00:15:33.419 --> 00:15:34.979
 So just one verse.

00:15:35.079 --> 00:15:35.539
 Read with me.

00:15:36.139 --> 00:15:38.179
 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion.

00:15:38.399 --> 00:15:41.019
 Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem.

00:15:41.639 --> 00:15:45.500
 Behold, your king is coming to you.

00:15:46.079 --> 00:15:49.639
 Righteous and having salvation is he.

00:15:50.179 --> 00:15:52.899
 Humble and mounted on a donkey.

00:15:54.039 --> 00:15:54.939
 On a colt.

00:15:55.779 --> 00:15:58.819
 The foal of a donkey.

00:15:58.819 --> 00:16:03.079
 Notice, it's speaking of entrance into Jerusalem.

00:16:03.419 --> 00:16:06.740
 Notice, it's speaking of a coming king.

00:16:07.219 --> 00:16:11.500
 Notice, it's speaking that this king is bringing salvation with him.

00:16:11.599 --> 00:16:12.399
 That he's righteous.

00:16:13.019 --> 00:16:14.599
 Notice, he's riding on a donkey.

00:16:15.120 --> 00:16:16.899
 This king is a humble king.

00:16:17.740 --> 00:16:22.299
 Notice, that him riding in a donkey means he's bringing peace with him.

00:16:24.539 --> 00:16:28.620
 The Messiah would come bringing peace.

00:16:28.620 --> 00:16:32.500
 The Son of David would come bringing peace.

00:16:32.500 --> 00:16:33.759
 Riding on a donkey.

00:16:34.259 --> 00:16:35.440
 The king would come.

00:16:37.440 --> 00:16:42.019
 The cult reveals who this guy is.

00:16:43.419 --> 00:16:44.519
 He's the king.

00:16:45.519 --> 00:16:47.179
 The Zechariah 9.9 king.

00:16:48.120 --> 00:16:49.179
 The Messiah king.

00:16:50.220 --> 00:16:51.419
 That's who's walking in.

00:16:51.600 --> 00:16:52.580
 He's the king of Israel.

00:16:52.720 --> 00:16:53.659
 But more than that,

00:16:54.779 --> 00:16:56.580
 he's the king of all nations.

00:16:56.580 --> 00:16:58.340
 The king of kings.

00:16:58.340 --> 00:16:58.360
 The king of kings.

00:16:58.360 --> 00:16:59.560
 And the Lord of lords.

00:17:01.080 --> 00:17:06.819
 And we see that the crowd gets a glimpse of this.

00:17:06.920 --> 00:17:09.279
 They have a sense of who this is.

00:17:10.100 --> 00:17:14.180
 And so, we've moved from now the cult to the crowd.

00:17:14.620 --> 00:17:16.600
 In verses 35-38.

00:17:17.340 --> 00:17:21.220
 In verse 35, we see that after they bring the donkey to Jesus,

00:17:21.220 --> 00:17:23.579
 they set Jesus upon the donkey.

00:17:24.339 --> 00:17:28.519
 And Jesus starts making his way down the descent of the Mount of Olives.

00:17:28.620 --> 00:17:31.360
 Now, remember that Jerusalem,

00:17:32.660 --> 00:17:35.920
 the temple in Jerusalem faces east.

00:17:35.920 --> 00:17:40.960
 And so, if you were sitting in front of the temple,

00:17:41.140 --> 00:17:42.400
 standing there, looking out,

00:17:42.720 --> 00:17:44.700
 you would see the top of the Mount of Olives.

00:17:45.820 --> 00:17:48.400
 And so, what Jesus, what we are reading here,

00:17:48.480 --> 00:17:51.539
 is Jesus is making his way down the Mount of Olives.

00:17:51.860 --> 00:17:54.019
 And eventually, he's going to be taking the path

00:17:54.019 --> 00:17:56.940
 straight into the heart of the temple.

00:17:58.080 --> 00:18:00.320
 He's coming down the road.

00:18:01.279 --> 00:18:02.519
 And as he comes down,

00:18:02.519 --> 00:18:05.740
 he's going to have a full view from the Mount of Olives,

00:18:05.740 --> 00:18:07.620
 which sits above Jerusalem.

00:18:07.779 --> 00:18:09.900
 He's going to see the whole city laid out in front of him.

00:18:14.839 --> 00:18:15.839
 There's a lot there.

00:18:18.200 --> 00:18:23.819
 Ezekiel tells us of how God leaves the temple.

00:18:25.500 --> 00:18:31.059
 And here we have God re-entering Jerusalem.

00:18:31.059 --> 00:18:33.920
 And eventually, he's going to stand in the temple

00:18:33.920 --> 00:18:35.039
 and he's going to clean it.

00:18:35.740 --> 00:18:39.859
 Well, there's this crowd around him

00:18:39.859 --> 00:18:42.539
 as he's making his way down the Mount of Olives.

00:18:43.480 --> 00:18:45.140
 And there's three things to notice about the crowd.

00:18:45.259 --> 00:18:46.140
 Who makes up the crowd?

00:18:47.099 --> 00:18:49.920
 The crowd is the whole multitude of his disciples.

00:18:50.160 --> 00:18:50.980
 Verse 37.

00:18:51.700 --> 00:18:54.579
 So, it's not the entirety of Jerusalem

00:18:54.579 --> 00:18:57.779
 come out to witness Jesus coming into the city.

00:18:57.779 --> 00:19:00.579
 This is Jesus' disciples

00:19:00.579 --> 00:19:02.899
 who have been following him.

00:19:03.679 --> 00:19:04.419
 They're there.

00:19:06.980 --> 00:19:09.299
 Now, Matthew 21 does say that

00:19:09.299 --> 00:19:10.579
 when Jesus arrives,

00:19:10.639 --> 00:19:13.379
 he creates a stir with the people in Jerusalem.

00:19:13.519 --> 00:19:15.079
 They ask, who is this?

00:19:15.559 --> 00:19:16.699
 But what's important to note here,

00:19:16.740 --> 00:19:17.879
 it's not all of Jerusalem

00:19:17.879 --> 00:19:19.879
 out on the Mount of Olives

00:19:19.879 --> 00:19:23.480
 throwing coats and palm branches down.

00:19:23.980 --> 00:19:24.919
 It's his disciples.

00:19:24.920 --> 00:19:30.860
 Notice what they're doing.

00:19:32.820 --> 00:19:35.380
 This crowd of Jesus' disciples,

00:19:35.580 --> 00:19:36.519
 primarily disciples,

00:19:37.080 --> 00:19:39.160
 they're throwing down before him

00:19:39.160 --> 00:19:40.680
 their cloaks.

00:19:42.680 --> 00:19:45.080
 John 12 also informs us

00:19:45.080 --> 00:19:47.140
 they're laying down palm branches.

00:19:48.140 --> 00:19:50.640
 This is the equivalent of a poor man's red carpet.

00:19:50.640 --> 00:19:55.300
 You know how red carpets signify importance

00:19:55.300 --> 00:19:56.160
 and prestige?

00:19:56.520 --> 00:19:58.360
 You know, you see those kind of

00:19:58.360 --> 00:20:00.640
 initial showings of a movie

00:20:00.640 --> 00:20:03.360
 or some kind of award ceremony

00:20:03.360 --> 00:20:05.140
 and there's a red carpet out there

00:20:05.140 --> 00:20:07.500
 and the very important kind of

00:20:07.500 --> 00:20:08.740
 walk the red carpet.

00:20:09.020 --> 00:20:10.759
 Red carpets are known for royalty

00:20:10.759 --> 00:20:13.660
 to walk down red carpets.

00:20:14.920 --> 00:20:16.440
 Well, this crowd

00:20:16.440 --> 00:20:19.240
 is not laying down a red carpet.

00:20:19.240 --> 00:20:21.200
 They're laying down cloaks

00:20:21.200 --> 00:20:22.299
 and palm branches.

00:20:22.480 --> 00:20:25.099
 Basically, whatever they can get

00:20:25.099 --> 00:20:26.380
 their hands on

00:20:26.380 --> 00:20:28.039
 to cover the road.

00:20:28.460 --> 00:20:30.259
 Because they know

00:20:30.259 --> 00:20:32.440
 who's coming down on the donkey.

00:20:33.720 --> 00:20:36.180
 They're laying out a covering

00:20:36.180 --> 00:20:36.920
 on the road.

00:20:37.180 --> 00:20:39.000
 This is no ordinary person

00:20:39.000 --> 00:20:40.220
 coming down on this donkey.

00:20:41.720 --> 00:20:44.140
 This is demonstration of respect

00:20:44.140 --> 00:20:45.380
 and of honor

00:20:45.380 --> 00:20:47.920
 to the one riding the donkey.

00:20:47.920 --> 00:20:49.400
 That's what you do for a king.

00:20:51.400 --> 00:20:53.160
 Now notice what they are singing.

00:20:56.160 --> 00:20:56.820
 They're singing,

00:20:57.000 --> 00:20:57.920
 Blessed is the King

00:20:57.920 --> 00:20:59.220
 who comes in the name of the Lord.

00:21:00.880 --> 00:21:01.880
 Blessed is the King

00:21:01.880 --> 00:21:03.420
 who comes in the name of the Lord.

00:21:04.700 --> 00:21:07.100
 This crowd is calling Jesus

00:21:07.100 --> 00:21:09.500
 the King who comes

00:21:09.500 --> 00:21:10.820
 in the name of the Lord.

00:21:10.820 --> 00:21:13.480
 And Jesus isn't quieting them.

00:21:13.480 --> 00:21:16.140
 He's letting them sing.

00:21:18.380 --> 00:21:20.440
 The long awaited Messiah King

00:21:20.440 --> 00:21:22.240
 has arrived

00:21:22.240 --> 00:21:24.400
 to liberate His city.

00:21:24.779 --> 00:21:25.400
 His people.

00:21:28.559 --> 00:21:29.720
 This little phrase,

00:21:29.860 --> 00:21:30.680
 Blessed is the King

00:21:30.680 --> 00:21:31.779
 who comes in the name of the Lord.

00:21:31.839 --> 00:21:35.059
 It's actually taken from Psalm 118.26.

00:21:36.059 --> 00:21:38.880
 And it's part of a group of psalms

00:21:38.880 --> 00:21:39.940
 called the Hallel.

00:21:40.400 --> 00:21:41.700
 Prayers of thanksgiving

00:21:41.700 --> 00:21:43.460
 recited during Passover.

00:21:46.920 --> 00:21:48.440
 This is all coincidental

00:21:48.440 --> 00:21:49.640
 to Passover.

00:21:51.100 --> 00:21:53.600
 And Jesus intentionally timed it that way.

00:21:55.160 --> 00:21:56.720
 Jerusalem would be packed

00:21:56.720 --> 00:21:59.019
 with Jewish travelers

00:21:59.019 --> 00:22:00.180
 coming into Jerusalem

00:22:00.180 --> 00:22:01.920
 to celebrate the deliverance,

00:22:02.319 --> 00:22:03.440
 the great deliverance

00:22:03.440 --> 00:22:04.840
 that God brought about

00:22:04.840 --> 00:22:05.920
 in the time of Moses.

00:22:07.120 --> 00:22:08.920
 Remember the Passover?

00:22:08.920 --> 00:22:08.980
 Passover?

00:22:10.560 --> 00:22:13.900
 The great tenth plague wrought.

00:22:14.279 --> 00:22:15.500
 The angel of death.

00:22:16.779 --> 00:22:19.779
 The killing of sheep, of lambs,

00:22:19.840 --> 00:22:21.100
 and the spreading of blood

00:22:21.100 --> 00:22:22.580
 over doorposts

00:22:22.580 --> 00:22:23.940
 so that the destroyer,

00:22:24.019 --> 00:22:24.940
 the angel of death,

00:22:25.279 --> 00:22:27.860
 would pass over God's people

00:22:27.860 --> 00:22:29.460
 and they would be saved.

00:22:30.140 --> 00:22:31.060
 But it didn't end there.

00:22:32.660 --> 00:22:34.620
 Passed over in order to be delivered.

00:22:34.619 --> 00:22:38.519
 To be brought out of Egypt.

00:22:40.919 --> 00:22:42.719
 And here the crowd is proclaiming

00:22:42.719 --> 00:22:43.859
 that Jesus is the King

00:22:43.859 --> 00:22:45.539
 who's come in the name of the Lord

00:22:45.539 --> 00:22:47.919
 with salvation to deliver His people.

00:22:49.319 --> 00:22:50.379
 We read the words,

00:22:50.879 --> 00:22:54.239
 peace and glory in the highest.

00:22:55.439 --> 00:22:56.059
 Here we are.

00:22:56.579 --> 00:22:57.339
 Luke 19.

00:22:57.699 --> 00:23:00.859
 Reading peace, glory in the highest.

00:23:00.859 --> 00:23:03.359
 Maybe it rings a bell.

00:23:04.199 --> 00:23:06.719
 Angels in a field outside of Bethlehem

00:23:06.719 --> 00:23:08.619
 on the day that Jesus was born.

00:23:09.719 --> 00:23:11.299
 Glory to God in the highest.

00:23:12.179 --> 00:23:12.799
 And on earth,

00:23:13.819 --> 00:23:16.779
 peace among those with whom He is pleased.

00:23:19.159 --> 00:23:20.099
 They're singing.

00:23:20.279 --> 00:23:21.579
 And the way that you need to think about it

00:23:21.579 --> 00:23:22.779
 is the followers of Jesus

00:23:22.779 --> 00:23:25.799
 are proclaiming what all heaven already knows

00:23:25.799 --> 00:23:28.500
 and what all heaven has been waiting for.

00:23:28.500 --> 00:23:32.440
 The Messiah King is entering the city of Jerusalem.

00:23:33.119 --> 00:23:34.240
 The time has come.

00:23:35.319 --> 00:23:38.599
 Zechariah 9.9 is being fulfilled before their eyes.

00:23:42.000 --> 00:23:43.519
 The King's arrival,

00:23:43.720 --> 00:23:45.440
 Jesus' arrival into Jerusalem

00:23:45.440 --> 00:23:48.880
 was to establish His kingdom

00:23:48.880 --> 00:23:52.859
 by one great act of deliverance

00:23:52.859 --> 00:23:56.039
 that would eclipse the Passover.

00:23:56.039 --> 00:23:59.059
 Who is this guy?

00:24:01.519 --> 00:24:02.559
 Blessed is the King

00:24:02.559 --> 00:24:03.779
 who comes in the name of the Lord.

00:24:05.039 --> 00:24:07.899
 This guy just so happens to be the Lord.

00:24:11.299 --> 00:24:12.639
 And His followers,

00:24:13.259 --> 00:24:15.139
 they are getting it.

00:24:15.960 --> 00:24:18.259
 They are understanding something of all this.

00:24:19.579 --> 00:24:20.980
 But not His critics.

00:24:20.980 --> 00:24:25.200
 In verses 39-40,

00:24:25.319 --> 00:24:27.380
 we see the critics.

00:24:29.079 --> 00:24:31.839
 It turns out there was some crowd control

00:24:31.839 --> 00:24:33.240
 going on on this road.

00:24:34.480 --> 00:24:36.420
 Though the crowd was mainly comprised

00:24:36.420 --> 00:24:37.500
 of followers of Jesus,

00:24:37.660 --> 00:24:40.160
 there were some religious po-po's in the house.

00:24:42.160 --> 00:24:43.299
 The Pharisees.

00:24:44.900 --> 00:24:48.079
 They understood what Christ's disciples were singing.

00:24:48.079 --> 00:24:50.000
 They got it.

00:24:51.859 --> 00:24:54.240
 They heard His disciples singing

00:24:54.240 --> 00:24:56.639
 Psalm 118.26

00:24:56.639 --> 00:24:59.679
 and applying it to this guy,

00:24:59.960 --> 00:25:00.359
 Jesus,

00:25:00.759 --> 00:25:01.939
 riding on the donkey.

00:25:02.319 --> 00:25:03.179
 They get it.

00:25:03.179 --> 00:25:03.220
 They get it.

00:25:08.500 --> 00:25:11.359
 They hear these people saying,

00:25:11.599 --> 00:25:13.179
 this is the King who's come

00:25:13.179 --> 00:25:14.059
 in the name of the Lord

00:25:14.059 --> 00:25:15.099
 to work salvation.

00:25:15.099 --> 00:25:16.500
 They understand

00:25:16.500 --> 00:25:18.619
 that what this crowd is saying

00:25:18.619 --> 00:25:19.919
 is that this guy

00:25:19.919 --> 00:25:21.259
 is the Messiah.

00:25:21.759 --> 00:25:23.319
 And they see the guy on the donkey

00:25:23.319 --> 00:25:24.679
 not doing anything about it,

00:25:24.740 --> 00:25:25.699
 rather receiving it.

00:25:30.119 --> 00:25:31.759
 They're unbelieving critics.

00:25:33.219 --> 00:25:34.299
 They don't believe

00:25:34.299 --> 00:25:35.579
 Jesus is the Messiah.

00:25:36.759 --> 00:25:37.939
 They don't believe

00:25:37.939 --> 00:25:39.379
 that Jesus is the one,

00:25:39.619 --> 00:25:40.740
 the long-promised one

00:25:40.740 --> 00:25:41.839
 who would deliver His people.

00:25:41.980 --> 00:25:42.779
 They don't believe it.

00:25:42.779 --> 00:25:44.399
 And so,

00:25:44.559 --> 00:25:45.879
 you know what they tell Jesus to do?

00:25:46.220 --> 00:25:46.759
 And literally,

00:25:46.960 --> 00:25:48.579
 they tell Him to do this.

00:25:48.779 --> 00:25:49.759
 It's a strong command.

00:25:50.399 --> 00:25:50.779
 They say,

00:25:50.859 --> 00:25:51.220
 Teacher,

00:25:51.399 --> 00:25:52.440
 rebuke your disciples.

00:25:52.639 --> 00:25:53.139
 In other words,

00:25:53.539 --> 00:25:55.119
 will you tell them to shut up?

00:25:57.680 --> 00:25:58.240
 Because

00:25:58.240 --> 00:25:59.859
 you're not the Messiah.

00:26:02.859 --> 00:26:04.720
 They shouldn't be saying that about you.

00:26:05.240 --> 00:26:06.500
 They shouldn't be calling you

00:26:06.500 --> 00:26:08.680
 or inferring that you're the Messiah.

00:26:10.119 --> 00:26:11.259
 They didn't believe it.

00:26:12.779 --> 00:26:15.220
 And in verse 40,

00:26:15.299 --> 00:26:17.339
 we read the response of Jesus.

00:26:17.559 --> 00:26:17.940
 He says,

00:26:18.399 --> 00:26:19.720
 I tell you, Pharisees,

00:26:19.819 --> 00:26:21.220
 if these disciples of Mine

00:26:21.220 --> 00:26:21.799
 were silent,

00:26:22.139 --> 00:26:23.920
 the very stones would cry out.

00:26:25.819 --> 00:26:27.099
 You know what Jesus is saying?

00:26:27.339 --> 00:26:28.799
 There's no mistake here.

00:26:30.220 --> 00:26:30.920
 No mistake.

00:26:33.240 --> 00:26:34.339
 They're right.

00:26:35.420 --> 00:26:37.639
 They should be singing this to Me.

00:26:37.639 --> 00:26:40.379
 I am the Messiah.

00:26:40.380 --> 00:26:42.460
 He doesn't come out and say it,

00:26:42.900 --> 00:26:44.160
 but it's implied.

00:26:48.160 --> 00:26:49.540
 All creation,

00:26:49.740 --> 00:26:51.640
 including these stones,

00:26:51.980 --> 00:26:52.780
 have been waiting

00:26:52.780 --> 00:26:55.620
 for this very moment.

00:26:55.700 --> 00:26:56.800
 What Jesus is saying is,

00:26:57.020 --> 00:26:58.300
 there's no stopping it.

00:26:59.620 --> 00:27:00.840
 It's right.

00:27:01.560 --> 00:27:02.680
 It's fulfillment.

00:27:03.680 --> 00:27:04.460
 And ironically,

00:27:05.100 --> 00:27:07.140
 He rebukes the Pharisees.

00:27:07.140 --> 00:27:08.960
 Who is this guy?

00:27:10.800 --> 00:27:12.600
 He's not denying who He is,

00:27:12.640 --> 00:27:13.759
 even though these Pharisees

00:27:13.759 --> 00:27:14.800
 are denying who He is.

00:27:15.259 --> 00:27:16.440
 He is the King

00:27:16.440 --> 00:27:17.840
 who's come in the name of the Lord.

00:27:17.920 --> 00:27:19.500
 And He's bringing salvation with Him.

00:27:20.180 --> 00:27:21.780
 And there's no stopping it.

00:27:21.780 --> 00:27:21.800
 But He's not denying it.

00:27:27.920 --> 00:27:29.259
 And He's really sad.

00:27:29.259 --> 00:27:32.920
 Here we are,

00:27:33.039 --> 00:27:35.059
 people praising Him.

00:27:37.220 --> 00:27:38.319
 And He's sad.

00:27:39.960 --> 00:27:41.779
 Douglas MacArthur wasn't sad

00:27:41.779 --> 00:27:45.599
 when he told the Filipinos

00:27:45.599 --> 00:27:48.500
 that their redemption has come.

00:27:48.779 --> 00:27:49.720
 He wasn't sad.

00:27:51.839 --> 00:27:54.319
 Jesus is deeply, deeply sad.

00:27:55.400 --> 00:27:57.180
 In verses 41 through 44,

00:27:57.299 --> 00:27:57.920
 we see it.

00:27:57.920 --> 00:28:03.440
 Here's the scene.

00:28:06.240 --> 00:28:07.779
 Jesus is mounted on a donkey

00:28:07.779 --> 00:28:08.860
 descending on a road

00:28:08.860 --> 00:28:09.960
 down the Mount of Olives

00:28:09.960 --> 00:28:12.279
 towards the city of Jerusalem.

00:28:12.420 --> 00:28:13.320
 This historic city.

00:28:13.480 --> 00:28:14.960
 He's surrounded mainly

00:28:14.960 --> 00:28:16.460
 by His rejoicing disciples,

00:28:16.680 --> 00:28:17.900
 though there are a couple critics

00:28:17.900 --> 00:28:19.000
 who are denying Him.

00:28:20.380 --> 00:28:22.400
 And as He is descending

00:28:22.400 --> 00:28:25.560
 and the city lies out before Him,

00:28:25.559 --> 00:28:29.639
 we read that He is weeping.

00:28:31.619 --> 00:28:35.740
 Now, when you hear about somebody weeping,

00:28:35.839 --> 00:28:37.539
 I don't know what comes into your mind.

00:28:38.539 --> 00:28:39.980
 Maybe you think that He has tears

00:28:39.980 --> 00:28:41.399
 trickling down His cheeks.

00:28:42.359 --> 00:28:43.960
 It's not that kind of weeping.

00:28:44.839 --> 00:28:46.759
 This is the same word used

00:28:46.759 --> 00:28:48.119
 for what took place with Peter.

00:28:48.240 --> 00:28:51.240
 Remember when Peter denied Jesus three times?

00:28:51.240 --> 00:28:53.880
 And then Jesus looks at Peter

00:28:53.880 --> 00:28:54.859
 and Peter splits

00:28:54.859 --> 00:28:56.039
 and He goes outside

00:28:56.039 --> 00:28:58.539
 and He weeps bitterly.

00:29:00.059 --> 00:29:01.319
 Kind of shaking,

00:29:01.579 --> 00:29:02.740
 kind of wailing, weeping.

00:29:04.099 --> 00:29:06.539
 That's what's going on with Jesus right here.

00:29:07.480 --> 00:29:09.920
 He's entering into Jerusalem

00:29:09.920 --> 00:29:11.579
 to praise,

00:29:11.960 --> 00:29:12.700
 to some critics,

00:29:12.700 --> 00:29:14.460
 and He's weeping.

00:29:15.080 --> 00:29:16.180
 He's wailing.

00:29:18.700 --> 00:29:21.559
 Why is He so upset?

00:29:24.160 --> 00:29:25.700
 Well, we know He's not weeping

00:29:25.700 --> 00:29:27.279
 because His own feelings are hurt.

00:29:30.920 --> 00:29:32.340
 He's not weeping because

00:29:32.340 --> 00:29:35.680
 He Himself is being rejected

00:29:35.680 --> 00:29:38.140
 like God was rejected by His people

00:29:38.140 --> 00:29:39.200
 in 1 Samuel 8.

00:29:39.200 --> 00:29:43.400
 He's weeping over the hard hearts

00:29:43.400 --> 00:29:45.680
 of those who are rejecting Him.

00:29:46.940 --> 00:29:48.299
 He's come to His city.

00:29:48.740 --> 00:29:50.660
 He's come to His own, John 1.

00:29:50.860 --> 00:29:53.100
 And they don't acknowledge Him.

00:29:57.240 --> 00:29:58.340
 In verse 42,

00:29:58.460 --> 00:30:00.900
 the Jewish people have been blinded

00:30:00.900 --> 00:30:02.580
 so that they can't recognize

00:30:02.580 --> 00:30:04.420
 who it is that's coming into the city.

00:30:04.559 --> 00:30:06.240
 They may be asking,

00:30:06.480 --> 00:30:07.340
 who is this?

00:30:07.420 --> 00:30:08.519
 What's the big hubbub?

00:30:08.519 --> 00:30:10.319
 But they don't have eyes to see.

00:30:10.680 --> 00:30:12.039
 They don't have ears to hear

00:30:12.039 --> 00:30:14.119
 that Jesus is the King

00:30:14.119 --> 00:30:15.480
 who's come in the name of the Lord

00:30:15.480 --> 00:30:18.720
 to bring the peace of salvation.

00:30:20.299 --> 00:30:21.379
 They don't get it.

00:30:22.339 --> 00:30:25.019
 They don't recognize that their deliverer,

00:30:25.180 --> 00:30:26.279
 their peacemaker,

00:30:26.579 --> 00:30:28.559
 is riding into the city

00:30:28.559 --> 00:30:31.720
 on a humble, lowly donkey.

00:30:31.720 --> 00:30:35.339
 Jesus is bringing with Him

00:30:35.339 --> 00:30:37.900
 peace with God

00:30:37.900 --> 00:30:40.600
 through His sacrificial death.

00:30:41.000 --> 00:30:43.640
 Not a political coup d'etat.

00:30:47.799 --> 00:30:50.240
 They were not looking for that kind of peace.

00:30:51.680 --> 00:30:54.819
 Jerusalem was looking for military might.

00:30:54.819 --> 00:30:55.960
 And Jesus says,

00:30:56.500 --> 00:30:57.619
 would that you,

00:30:58.159 --> 00:30:59.939
 even you,

00:31:01.339 --> 00:31:02.599
 had known on this day

00:31:02.599 --> 00:31:04.339
 the things that make for peace.

00:31:04.879 --> 00:31:06.579
 I am your peace, Jerusalem!

00:31:06.579 --> 00:31:06.779
 Jerusalem!

00:31:13.039 --> 00:31:14.779
 Does it really matter who this guy is?

00:31:18.679 --> 00:31:20.879
 He's wailing because of the hardness of heart

00:31:20.879 --> 00:31:22.119
 of the people of God,

00:31:22.220 --> 00:31:22.799
 quote unquote,

00:31:22.960 --> 00:31:23.879
 living in Jerusalem.

00:31:23.880 --> 00:31:31.020
 He's weeping because

00:31:31.020 --> 00:31:33.900
 Jerusalem is going to be destroyed.

00:31:35.580 --> 00:31:36.700
 Would you look with me

00:31:36.700 --> 00:31:38.440
 at verses 43 and 44?

00:31:39.900 --> 00:31:41.040
 Jesus is saying,

00:31:41.740 --> 00:31:43.420
 for the days will come upon you

00:31:43.420 --> 00:31:45.940
 when your enemies will set up

00:31:45.940 --> 00:31:47.460
 a barricade around you

00:31:47.460 --> 00:31:48.540
 and surround you

00:31:48.540 --> 00:31:50.700
 and hem you in on every side.

00:31:50.700 --> 00:31:50.780
 And,

00:31:50.780 --> 00:31:53.140
 Jesus is saying,

00:31:53.880 --> 00:31:56.160
 and tear you down to the ground.

00:31:57.480 --> 00:31:59.480
 You and your children within you

00:31:59.480 --> 00:32:01.980
 and they will not leave

00:32:01.980 --> 00:32:05.740
 one stone upon another in you.

00:32:06.520 --> 00:32:07.540
 Forty years later,

00:32:08.520 --> 00:32:10.740
 Titus besieges the city

00:32:10.740 --> 00:32:14.560
 and eventually devastates Jerusalem

00:32:14.560 --> 00:32:16.160
 to the uttermost.

00:32:17.440 --> 00:32:18.960
 His words came true.

00:32:19.900 --> 00:32:22.920
 He spoke judgment on those who rejected him.

00:32:22.920 --> 00:32:24.720
 And they were judged.

00:32:27.519 --> 00:32:30.500
 He's wailing because of this people of God

00:32:30.500 --> 00:32:31.420
 living in Jerusalem

00:32:31.420 --> 00:32:33.320
 who are rejecting him.

00:32:34.259 --> 00:32:36.000
 They will utterly be destroyed.

00:32:36.140 --> 00:32:37.779
 In verse 44, we're told why?

00:32:38.519 --> 00:32:41.259
 Because you did not know

00:32:41.259 --> 00:32:43.400
 the time of your visitation.

00:32:44.400 --> 00:32:45.560
 You didn't recognize

00:32:45.560 --> 00:32:46.720
 who was coming into the city.

00:32:46.720 --> 00:32:52.320
 They rejected Jesus as their king.

00:32:52.319 --> 00:32:54.059
 Therefore, they would be judged.

00:32:55.159 --> 00:32:57.919
 And Jesus wails over it.

00:32:59.919 --> 00:33:01.879
 He's not cheering over it.

00:33:01.919 --> 00:33:03.220
 He wails over it.

00:33:05.019 --> 00:33:08.240
 What a picture of a grieved heart

00:33:08.240 --> 00:33:09.119
 of a king.

00:33:11.720 --> 00:33:13.079
 Who is this guy?

00:33:13.539 --> 00:33:16.319
 Who is this guy that pronounces devastation

00:33:16.319 --> 00:33:17.539
 for rejecting him

00:33:17.539 --> 00:33:19.859
 and then it happens on a global scale?

00:33:20.700 --> 00:33:21.919
 Rome did his bidding.

00:33:21.920 --> 00:33:25.840
 You see him weeping.

00:33:25.940 --> 00:33:27.100
 He takes no pleasure

00:33:27.100 --> 00:33:28.220
 in the death of the wicked.

00:33:28.880 --> 00:33:30.620
 Jesus does not want people

00:33:30.620 --> 00:33:31.940
 to reject him as king,

00:33:32.100 --> 00:33:34.360
 but he will judge those that do.

00:33:36.860 --> 00:33:37.900
 Who is this guy?

00:33:41.400 --> 00:33:42.240
 The point

00:33:42.240 --> 00:33:44.519
 why this is in your Bible.

00:33:45.740 --> 00:33:47.240
 Jesus is the Christ.

00:33:47.240 --> 00:33:49.299
 The Messiah.

00:33:49.299 --> 00:33:50.779
 The king.

00:33:51.259 --> 00:33:53.500
 Palm Sunday is not about palm branches.

00:33:53.920 --> 00:33:55.680
 Palm Sunday is about the guy

00:33:55.680 --> 00:33:57.839
 on the donkey coming into the city

00:33:57.839 --> 00:33:59.099
 and he's weeping

00:33:59.099 --> 00:34:01.640
 and he's fulfilling Zechariah 9.9.

00:34:01.799 --> 00:34:03.420
 This is the king that's come

00:34:03.420 --> 00:34:05.200
 with deliverance in his hand.

00:34:05.200 --> 00:34:08.720
 He's God in the flesh.

00:34:08.720 --> 00:34:09.980
 The long awaited Messiah.

00:34:11.039 --> 00:34:12.920
 And what we'll see over this week,

00:34:13.619 --> 00:34:14.519
 Passion Week,

00:34:14.900 --> 00:34:17.519
 is that Jesus establishes his reign

00:34:17.519 --> 00:34:19.360
 not by military coup,

00:34:19.760 --> 00:34:21.260
 but through his suffering

00:34:21.260 --> 00:34:23.119
 and his death

00:34:23.119 --> 00:34:25.000
 and his resurrection.

00:34:27.940 --> 00:34:29.339
 Jerusalem may be the place

00:34:29.339 --> 00:34:30.339
 he's walking into

00:34:30.339 --> 00:34:32.679
 and where his reign starts,

00:34:33.079 --> 00:34:34.880
 but it would quickly spread.

00:34:35.099 --> 00:34:36.159
 The reign of Christ,

00:34:36.239 --> 00:34:37.119
 the kingdom of Jesus,

00:34:37.259 --> 00:34:38.199
 it would spread

00:34:38.199 --> 00:34:39.579
 from Jerusalem

00:34:39.579 --> 00:34:41.119
 to Judea

00:34:41.119 --> 00:34:42.279
 to Samaria

00:34:42.280 --> 00:34:44.880
 and to every nation.

00:34:47.500 --> 00:34:48.900
 And it got here

00:34:48.900 --> 00:34:51.880
 in Kenosha

00:34:51.880 --> 00:34:54.140
 2015.

00:34:55.820 --> 00:34:58.640
 The reign of Jesus is here.

00:35:00.580 --> 00:35:01.780
 He is our king.

00:35:03.260 --> 00:35:05.240
 This king who entered Jerusalem

00:35:05.240 --> 00:35:07.740
 2,000 years ago

00:35:07.739 --> 00:35:10.539
 is our king today.

00:35:15.039 --> 00:35:17.879
 He is Christ the King.

00:35:18.819 --> 00:35:20.039
 And that's the point.

00:35:21.039 --> 00:35:23.039
 King Jesus arrived

00:35:23.039 --> 00:35:26.059
 to establish His kingdom

00:35:26.059 --> 00:35:28.939
 that would last forever.

00:35:31.419 --> 00:35:32.859
 And He's brought us in.

00:35:32.860 --> 00:35:37.840
 He had to reject the Jews

00:35:37.840 --> 00:35:40.320
 so that He can bring Gentiles in.

00:35:41.579 --> 00:35:42.480
 Praise be to God.

00:35:45.000 --> 00:35:46.000
 You know, there are really

00:35:46.000 --> 00:35:47.780
 two ways that you can respond to this.

00:35:48.780 --> 00:35:49.380
 Just two.

00:35:50.840 --> 00:35:52.940
 This claim that Jesus

00:35:52.940 --> 00:35:54.039
 is the Christ.

00:35:54.660 --> 00:35:55.180
 The Messiah.

00:35:56.039 --> 00:35:56.740
 Option one.

00:35:57.200 --> 00:35:58.740
 You reject Him as king.

00:35:59.559 --> 00:36:00.320
 That's option one.

00:36:01.260 --> 00:36:02.460
 Maybe you do not believe

00:36:02.460 --> 00:36:04.539
 that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah

00:36:04.539 --> 00:36:06.780
 and you reject Jesus as king

00:36:06.780 --> 00:36:08.619
 on intellectual grounds.

00:36:09.019 --> 00:36:09.340
 It's like,

00:36:09.500 --> 00:36:11.740
 I don't have enough information yet.

00:36:11.860 --> 00:36:12.840
 You're unconvinced.

00:36:12.960 --> 00:36:14.599
 Well, can I just ask you

00:36:14.599 --> 00:36:15.539
 to come back next week?

00:36:16.440 --> 00:36:17.559
 Come back next week.

00:36:17.980 --> 00:36:18.840
 Because we're going to look

00:36:18.840 --> 00:36:19.480
 at the resurrection

00:36:19.480 --> 00:36:22.820
 and there are some compelling reasons

00:36:22.820 --> 00:36:26.059
 why Jesus is who we claim to be

00:36:26.059 --> 00:36:27.480
 that comes out of the resurrection.

00:36:28.099 --> 00:36:29.480
 So come back next week.

00:36:30.639 --> 00:36:31.940
 It's a compelling case.

00:36:32.460 --> 00:36:36.000
 Just to give you a foretaste,

00:36:36.780 --> 00:36:38.159
 the tomb is empty.

00:36:39.619 --> 00:36:40.820
 Jesus is alive.

00:36:43.860 --> 00:36:44.920
 Or maybe,

00:36:45.920 --> 00:36:47.820
 you reject Jesus as king

00:36:47.820 --> 00:36:50.260
 not because of an intellectual objection,

00:36:50.619 --> 00:36:53.300
 but if you're really honest,

00:36:54.300 --> 00:36:56.800
 it's because you don't want

00:36:56.800 --> 00:36:57.760
 to part with your sin.

00:36:57.760 --> 00:37:01.940
 You don't want to obey king Jesus.

00:37:02.080 --> 00:37:03.460
 You don't want to bow your knee to Him

00:37:03.460 --> 00:37:04.540
 and come under His will.

00:37:05.300 --> 00:37:07.420
 It's a very important distinction to make

00:37:07.420 --> 00:37:09.720
 because this is about your will.

00:37:11.300 --> 00:37:14.720
 Your willingness to bow to Jesus.

00:37:14.719 --> 00:37:17.419
 Here's the deal.

00:37:18.939 --> 00:37:20.779
 You can know all that there is

00:37:20.779 --> 00:37:22.139
 to know about Jesus

00:37:22.139 --> 00:37:24.299
 and not bow your knee.

00:37:24.839 --> 00:37:27.500
 You can get A pluses in Christology

00:37:27.500 --> 00:37:29.000
 at a nice seminary

00:37:29.000 --> 00:37:32.000
 and still not have bowed your knee

00:37:32.000 --> 00:37:32.819
 to Jesus.

00:37:32.820 --> 00:37:38.680
 You can be thoroughly biblical about Him,

00:37:39.360 --> 00:37:40.740
 but you can still reject Him.

00:37:42.360 --> 00:37:46.320
 Just because you think Jesus

00:37:46.320 --> 00:37:48.160
 is who He claimed to be

00:37:48.160 --> 00:37:51.539
 doesn't mean you bowed your knee to Him

00:37:51.539 --> 00:37:52.400
 as king.

00:37:52.400 --> 00:37:56.460
 Bowing your knee to Jesus

00:37:56.460 --> 00:38:01.539
 is a decisive act of repentance and faith.

00:38:02.079 --> 00:38:04.940
 It's turning from a life lived for sin,

00:38:06.360 --> 00:38:08.760
 turning from that to Christ,

00:38:09.599 --> 00:38:11.019
 a life lived for Jesus.

00:38:12.940 --> 00:38:15.220
 Repentance and faith.

00:38:17.079 --> 00:38:19.539
 So whether you have intellectual objections

00:38:19.539 --> 00:38:22.519
 about Jesus or you're just refusing

00:38:22.519 --> 00:38:24.440
 to give up your precious sins,

00:38:25.320 --> 00:38:27.980
 you must know

00:38:27.980 --> 00:38:34.940
 that you await a similar fate

00:38:34.940 --> 00:38:38.199
 to those who did not recognize Jesus

00:38:38.199 --> 00:38:41.779
 when He came into Jerusalem 2,000 years ago.

00:38:44.019 --> 00:38:46.039
 The rejection of King Jesus

00:38:46.039 --> 00:38:47.639
 for whatever reason

00:38:47.639 --> 00:38:51.000
 remains a capital offense.

00:38:53.500 --> 00:38:54.539
 So this morning,

00:38:54.659 --> 00:38:55.500
 you have been warned.

00:38:57.059 --> 00:38:58.219
 Judgment is real.

00:38:59.440 --> 00:39:01.940
 What happened to Jerusalem in 70 A.D.

00:39:01.940 --> 00:39:03.960
 is a foretaste of what is to come

00:39:03.960 --> 00:39:06.039
 for those who reject Jesus now.

00:39:08.900 --> 00:39:09.920
 Option number one,

00:39:11.019 --> 00:39:11.920
 you can reject Him.

00:39:13.420 --> 00:39:14.460
 Option number two,

00:39:16.440 --> 00:39:17.159
 you bow your knee.

00:39:17.639 --> 00:39:20.819
 If you're not a Christian,

00:39:20.940 --> 00:39:22.739
 you can become a Christian

00:39:22.739 --> 00:39:25.400
 by turning away from living for yourself

00:39:25.400 --> 00:39:26.460
 in your own little kingdom

00:39:26.460 --> 00:39:28.819
 and turning to Christ

00:39:28.819 --> 00:39:29.679
 and living for Him.

00:39:32.259 --> 00:39:33.480
 You bow your knee to Jesus.

00:39:35.179 --> 00:39:36.960
 You say to the living Christ

00:39:36.960 --> 00:39:37.920
 something like this,

00:39:39.500 --> 00:39:41.319
 Jesus, I have been living

00:39:41.319 --> 00:39:42.879
 in rebellion to Your reign.

00:39:43.679 --> 00:39:44.819
 Please forgive me

00:39:44.819 --> 00:39:46.619
 and receive me into Your kingdom.

00:39:46.619 --> 00:39:47.440
 That's it.

00:39:47.440 --> 00:39:47.460
 That's it.

00:39:48.659 --> 00:39:51.980
 King Jesus will not turn anyone away

00:39:51.980 --> 00:39:54.619
 who humbles themselves like that.

00:39:55.839 --> 00:39:57.000
 Come on in.

00:39:59.039 --> 00:39:59.839
 In fact,

00:40:00.179 --> 00:40:01.980
 based upon His death

00:40:01.980 --> 00:40:03.480
 and His resurrection,

00:40:04.139 --> 00:40:05.920
 He fully forgives

00:40:05.920 --> 00:40:08.679
 all those who come to Him,

00:40:09.099 --> 00:40:11.059
 even those with the past

00:40:11.059 --> 00:40:12.519
 of rejecting Him.

00:40:12.519 --> 00:40:14.019
 that's His grace.

00:40:14.019 --> 00:40:15.920
 It is amazing.

00:40:21.920 --> 00:40:23.420
 There's no point in waiting.

00:40:24.579 --> 00:40:25.960
 So if you're in the room

00:40:25.960 --> 00:40:27.579
 and you haven't bound the knee to Jesus,

00:40:28.079 --> 00:40:29.320
 become a Christian today.

00:40:30.739 --> 00:40:32.619
 Would you let me know that

00:40:32.619 --> 00:40:33.980
 after the service?

00:40:33.980 --> 00:40:37.099
 Now, if you are a Christian,

00:40:37.579 --> 00:40:40.820
 you're a citizen of the kingdom of Christ,

00:40:41.780 --> 00:40:43.679
 and yet you've been resisting

00:40:43.679 --> 00:40:45.300
 the will of your King,

00:40:45.860 --> 00:40:47.880
 maybe you're stuck in your sin.

00:40:48.880 --> 00:40:50.019
 I just want to remind you

00:40:50.019 --> 00:40:51.179
 of a particular something.

00:40:52.400 --> 00:40:54.880
 Your King has claimed

00:40:54.880 --> 00:40:59.900
 every square inch of your life.

00:40:59.900 --> 00:41:02.920
 every square inch.

00:41:04.039 --> 00:41:06.880
 And where Christ reigns,

00:41:07.420 --> 00:41:10.579
 it results in rejoicing.

00:41:14.160 --> 00:41:15.180
 If you're stuck,

00:41:15.559 --> 00:41:16.500
 confess your sin.

00:41:17.519 --> 00:41:18.660
 Confess your disobedience.

00:41:18.800 --> 00:41:19.920
 Receive the forgiveness

00:41:19.920 --> 00:41:21.660
 your King purchased for you

00:41:21.660 --> 00:41:22.599
 at the cross.

00:41:23.820 --> 00:41:25.019
 Don't hide from Him.

00:41:25.960 --> 00:41:26.680
 Run to Him.

00:41:26.679 --> 00:41:29.059
 You've got a compassionate,

00:41:29.419 --> 00:41:30.319
 welcoming King.

00:41:31.299 --> 00:41:32.139
 He's tender.

00:41:33.619 --> 00:41:35.919
 He loves His own to the uttermost.

00:41:37.219 --> 00:41:39.019
 Even to His citizens

00:41:39.019 --> 00:41:40.699
 who can be a little resistant.

00:41:43.419 --> 00:41:45.759
 I want to close by just saying this.

00:41:46.359 --> 00:41:47.199
 For those of us

00:41:47.199 --> 00:41:48.379
 who have bowed our knee to Jesus,

00:41:48.500 --> 00:41:49.539
 who have become Christians,

00:41:50.500 --> 00:41:53.299
 we have an incredible promise.

00:41:53.300 --> 00:41:57.740
 We don't fear the judgment to come.

00:42:00.940 --> 00:42:02.180
 We've been given peace.

00:42:03.720 --> 00:42:04.680
 Peace with God.

00:42:05.539 --> 00:42:07.240
 The blood of our Passover Lamb,

00:42:07.720 --> 00:42:08.380
 King Jesus,

00:42:09.680 --> 00:42:11.880
 covers over our sin

00:42:11.880 --> 00:42:15.920
 and the destroyer passes over.

00:42:17.160 --> 00:42:18.200
 We've been delivered.

00:42:19.260 --> 00:42:20.200
 We've been forgiven.

00:42:20.199 --> 00:42:22.359
 We bowed our knee.

00:42:23.639 --> 00:42:24.539
 Christ is our King.

00:42:25.399 --> 00:42:25.879
