00:01:07.000 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah and said to him, 00:01:07.079 --> 00:01:10.140 Behold, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. thought that they needed. 00:04:27.880 --> 00:04:31.620 And then we see God through the prophet Samuel warning them that what they think they need. 00:04:31.700 --> 00:04:33.060 What they were saying. 00:04:33.160 --> 00:04:34.140 What they really wanted. 00:04:35.480 --> 00:04:36.760 Wasn't really what they needed. 00:04:38.360 --> 00:04:40.180 Now we'll look at this passage in three parts. 00:04:40.280 --> 00:04:42.520 We'll look at first, the problem they were facing. 00:04:44.440 --> 00:04:46.200 Second, the demand. 00:04:46.220 --> 00:04:47.480 For what they wanted. 00:04:48.480 --> 00:04:52.680 And third, God's provision in the long run of what they really needed. 00:04:53.680 --> 00:04:55.040 So first, their problem. 00:04:57.460 --> 00:05:00.500 Just to set a little bit of the background in this book of Samuel. 00:05:00.940 --> 00:05:08.040 So far in the first seven chapters, we've seen God raising up Samuel to lead the people of Israel in a dark time. 00:05:08.880 --> 00:05:11.880 The book of Samuel begins at one of the low points of Israel's history. 00:05:11.879 --> 00:05:14.139 It was a time when the leaders were corrupt. 00:05:14.139 --> 00:05:17.259 When their enemies were a constant threat. 00:05:17.339 --> 00:05:20.939 When they were dissolving at times into civil war. 00:05:20.939 --> 00:05:26.040 Spiritually speaking, it was a time of approaching darkness. 00:05:26.719 --> 00:05:28.800 And increasing chaos. 00:05:29.259 --> 00:05:30.680 And ominous silence. 00:05:31.680 --> 00:05:33.660 And God raised up Samuel as a prophet. 00:05:34.240 --> 00:05:36.540 To speak his word into the silence. 00:05:36.759 --> 00:05:38.639 And to bring order into the chaos. 00:05:38.759 --> 00:05:40.319 And to shine light into the darkness. 00:05:40.319 --> 00:05:48.659 And in chapter seven, the last chapter, God used Samuel to deliver the people from the enemies who were threatening them. 00:05:48.719 --> 00:05:49.339 The Philistines. 00:05:49.459 --> 00:05:50.860 And to judge the people with wisdom. 00:05:51.699 --> 00:05:52.519 And fairness. 00:05:53.360 --> 00:05:55.939 But the problem we see here in verses one through three. 00:05:57.079 --> 00:05:58.039 Samuel's getting old. 00:05:58.839 --> 00:06:00.699 And his sons didn't walk in his ways. 00:06:02.060 --> 00:06:03.060 Samuel loved God. 00:06:03.100 --> 00:06:04.000 And he loved the people. 00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:07.100 And so his leadership resulted in stability. 00:06:08.100 --> 00:06:09.720 His sons loved money. 00:06:10.199 --> 00:06:11.660 And they loved themselves. 00:06:12.660 --> 00:06:15.379 And the result was instability. 00:06:16.040 --> 00:06:16.759 And chaos. 00:06:17.779 --> 00:06:19.160 The future didn't look good. 00:06:19.399 --> 00:06:20.639 For the people of Israel. 00:06:21.759 --> 00:06:26.459 And it's a pattern, interestingly, that happens multiple times in this book of Samuel. 00:06:26.459 --> 00:06:35.779 That God-fearing, a God-fearing generation is then succeeded by a self-centered generation. 00:06:36.599 --> 00:06:39.680 So Eli the priest knew the Lord. 00:06:40.500 --> 00:06:41.459 His sons didn't. 00:06:42.159 --> 00:06:47.319 And his sons used their authority in the priesthood for their own gain and their own benefit. 00:06:47.659 --> 00:06:49.699 Samuel judged wisely and impartially. 00:06:49.819 --> 00:06:51.799 His sons took bribes. 00:06:52.639 --> 00:06:54.599 And sought after dishonest gain. 00:06:54.600 --> 00:06:57.020 David would later become the greatest king of Israel. 00:06:57.120 --> 00:07:00.260 But then his sons ended up literally killing each other. 00:07:01.460 --> 00:07:03.800 And you might ask, how does that happen? 00:07:05.100 --> 00:07:14.800 How does one generation, parents who love God, how are they succeeded by people who could care less? 00:07:16.480 --> 00:07:17.860 It shouldn't be that way. 00:07:18.740 --> 00:07:21.720 Now the Bible doesn't tell us exactly how that happened. 00:07:21.879 --> 00:07:23.360 But it does say that it happened. 00:07:23.360 --> 00:07:25.720 And sometimes it still happens. 00:07:26.620 --> 00:07:33.160 Now Samuel wasn't directly responsible for the selfish behavior, self-serving behavior of his adult children. 00:07:33.939 --> 00:07:38.060 But what he was responsible for was he put his sons in leadership positions. 00:07:38.840 --> 00:07:41.040 And he didn't really hold them accountable. 00:07:42.480 --> 00:07:46.660 Verse 1 says, when Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel. 00:07:46.660 --> 00:07:53.000 But if you read the book of Judges, which is sort of the background of the book of Samuel, Samuel actually didn't have to do that. 00:07:53.880 --> 00:08:00.780 The office of judge was not a hereditary office that was supposed to be passed on from father to son. 00:08:01.420 --> 00:08:02.560 From parent to child. 00:08:03.820 --> 00:08:03.960 Right? 00:08:03.959 --> 00:08:10.180 In fact, in Judges 8, the men of Israel came to Gideon, one of the judges, and they said, rule over us. 00:08:10.259 --> 00:08:11.979 You and your son and your grandson. 00:08:12.180 --> 00:08:12.939 Set up a dynasty. 00:08:13.099 --> 00:08:13.959 And Gideon said, no. 00:08:15.319 --> 00:08:16.719 I won't rule over you. 00:08:17.060 --> 00:08:18.620 Nor will my son rule over you. 00:08:18.819 --> 00:08:20.839 The Lord will rule over you. 00:08:20.839 --> 00:08:27.859 So Samuel put his sons in positions of spiritual leadership, but they failed to live up to their responsibility. 00:08:29.419 --> 00:08:30.979 And he didn't act decisively. 00:08:31.119 --> 00:08:33.079 Now, he did put them down in Beersheba. 00:08:33.179 --> 00:08:37.579 Now, that was in the southern, it was sort of the remote southern part of the country. 00:08:38.279 --> 00:08:43.159 So he sort of put them off in a remote place, maybe to limit their influence. 00:08:43.360 --> 00:08:46.059 But the problem was they weren't fit to lead anywhere. 00:08:46.779 --> 00:08:50.679 Not in the remote part of the country, not in the central part of the country where Samuel was. 00:08:50.840 --> 00:08:53.620 And putting them there only contained the problem temporarily. 00:08:54.220 --> 00:08:56.240 It didn't actually solve it. 00:08:58.019 --> 00:09:07.759 You know, one of the biggest challenges for every generation is passing on the responsibility for spiritual leadership to the next generation. 00:09:08.540 --> 00:09:12.620 So in the New Testament, 2 Timothy 2.2, Paul says to Timothy, 00:09:13.040 --> 00:09:20.320 What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others also. 00:09:21.660 --> 00:09:25.820 And along with teaching others, Paul talks about setting an example for others. 00:09:25.820 --> 00:09:33.120 So if you're in a position of Christian leadership, whether that's leading a Bible study for other college students, 00:09:33.120 --> 00:09:39.040 or whether that's being an elder or a deacon in a church, or whatever it might be, being a parent, 00:09:39.039 --> 00:09:48.179 one of the most important tasks that you're called to, is to train up other people who love God, who can lead alongside you, 00:09:48.360 --> 00:09:52.439 and then who you can eventually pass on your responsibility to. 00:09:53.199 --> 00:09:55.439 Because one day, like Samuel, you'll grow old. 00:09:55.440 --> 00:09:59.400 And you won't be, or you might have to move out of town. 00:09:59.760 --> 00:10:05.880 Or for whatever reason, you won't be able to be that leader anymore, and you'll have to find someone else to succeed you. 00:10:05.879 --> 00:10:12.759 And this is where many otherwise godly Christian leaders have failed. 00:10:13.759 --> 00:10:15.299 Many times through the years. 00:10:16.299 --> 00:10:19.759 Either they haven't been willing to share leadership at all, 00:10:19.759 --> 00:10:27.299 and so, when they finally die, their whole organization, their whole ministry falls apart, 00:10:27.379 --> 00:10:29.139 because they don't let anyone else have, 00:10:30.200 --> 00:10:32.480 they don't let anyone else into that leadership circle, 00:10:32.580 --> 00:10:36.600 or, they're not careful about who they invite to lead with them, 00:10:36.919 --> 00:10:38.519 or who they pass on the leadership to, 00:10:38.960 --> 00:10:39.819 and it goes downhill. 00:10:39.820 --> 00:10:42.379 So this is a warning. 00:10:44.340 --> 00:10:45.200 That we see. 00:10:45.780 --> 00:10:47.620 And this is the problem that the people were facing. 00:10:48.820 --> 00:10:50.660 And so the elders, what we see is the elders of Israel, 00:10:50.760 --> 00:10:53.020 they recognize this problem, rightly, 00:10:53.940 --> 00:10:58.060 but then the second thing we see is what they think they need. 00:10:59.379 --> 00:11:01.220 They come to Samuel, and say, 00:11:01.320 --> 00:11:02.280 here's what we want. 00:11:05.240 --> 00:11:06.000 Verse 4. 00:11:09.000 --> 00:11:09.740 Or verse 5. 00:11:09.820 --> 00:11:10.100 They say, 00:11:10.140 --> 00:11:12.640 Behold, you are old, and your sons don't walk in your ways. 00:11:12.720 --> 00:11:14.400 Now appoint for us a king, 00:11:15.480 --> 00:11:16.860 to judge us like all the nations. 00:11:18.620 --> 00:11:19.740 Now just as a background, 00:11:20.180 --> 00:11:23.500 there hadn't been a king in Israel so far. 00:11:24.500 --> 00:11:27.400 So the people of Israel had been led by different judges, 00:11:27.900 --> 00:11:30.160 who were raised up sort of one by one, 00:11:31.140 --> 00:11:33.500 generation by generation, person by person, 00:11:34.560 --> 00:11:37.300 that God raised up at different times to lead the people of Israel. 00:11:37.299 --> 00:11:39.759 And the people say, 00:11:40.199 --> 00:11:41.279 enough of this judge stuff. 00:11:41.479 --> 00:11:42.079 Give us a king. 00:11:42.839 --> 00:11:43.699 Give us a dynasty. 00:11:44.839 --> 00:11:45.679 Now verse 6 says, 00:11:45.740 --> 00:11:47.539 Samuel was immediately displeased. 00:11:48.379 --> 00:11:49.419 On the one hand, 00:11:50.199 --> 00:11:52.479 he probably felt personally offended. 00:11:52.480 --> 00:11:54.639 Because he had been a judge. 00:11:55.440 --> 00:11:55.980 And he had, 00:11:56.440 --> 00:11:57.440 he probably felt like, 00:11:58.039 --> 00:11:58.620 man, like, 00:11:59.700 --> 00:12:00.940 you're coming to me and saying, 00:12:01.460 --> 00:12:03.720 my replacements aren't doing well, 00:12:03.779 --> 00:12:04.680 and we need to restructure. 00:12:04.679 --> 00:12:07.579 And I'm at the end of my career path. 00:12:08.639 --> 00:12:09.899 Facing the end of his life, 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:13.059 felt like they were criticizing his leadership. 00:12:14.819 --> 00:12:16.399 But God says more than that, 00:12:16.599 --> 00:12:19.699 it's not just about them criticizing you, 00:12:19.779 --> 00:12:21.019 it's about them rejecting me. 00:12:22.779 --> 00:12:23.159 God said, 00:12:23.259 --> 00:12:25.539 what's really behind their request 00:12:25.539 --> 00:12:29.579 is not them rejecting you as a person, 00:12:29.580 --> 00:12:30.780 it's them rejecting me. 00:12:31.420 --> 00:12:31.480 And, 00:12:31.620 --> 00:12:34.000 and clinging on to 00:12:34.000 --> 00:12:36.700 other things. 00:12:37.440 --> 00:12:38.460 00:12:59.240 In Genesis 49, 00:12:59.379 --> 00:13:00.079 God had promised 00:13:00.079 --> 00:13:01.879 that one day a ruler would arise 00:13:01.879 --> 00:13:02.879 from the tribe of Judah 00:13:02.879 --> 00:13:05.220 who all the nations would obey. 00:13:06.019 --> 00:13:07.299 And in the book of Deuteronomy, 00:13:07.899 --> 00:13:09.120 God had said to the people of Israel, 00:13:09.220 --> 00:13:10.360 when you go into the land 00:13:10.360 --> 00:13:12.240 and you say, 00:13:12.740 --> 00:13:13.659 I want to have a king 00:13:13.659 --> 00:13:15.480 like all the nations around me, 00:13:15.500 --> 00:13:15.779 he says, 00:13:15.840 --> 00:13:18.100 you may indeed set a king over you 00:13:18.100 --> 00:13:20.179 whom the Lord your God will choose. 00:13:20.179 --> 00:13:22.959 It wasn't wrong in principle 00:13:22.959 --> 00:13:24.120 to have a king. 00:13:25.779 --> 00:13:26.859 What was wrong? 00:13:27.699 --> 00:13:28.459 You might ask 00:13:28.459 --> 00:13:29.319 with their request. 00:13:29.399 --> 00:13:30.739 The problem wasn't their request, 00:13:30.939 --> 00:13:31.899 it was their attitude. 00:13:33.919 --> 00:13:35.339 And we see three indications 00:13:35.339 --> 00:13:37.679 of what was wrong with their attitude. 00:13:38.739 --> 00:13:40.319 The first indication we see 00:13:40.319 --> 00:13:41.859 is they demanded from Samuel 00:13:41.859 --> 00:13:44.179 instead of depending on God. 00:13:45.399 --> 00:13:45.819 You know, 00:13:45.839 --> 00:13:47.620 when we face real problems, 00:13:48.779 --> 00:13:49.919 real dangers, 00:13:50.179 --> 00:13:52.019 real insecurities, 00:13:52.719 --> 00:13:55.199 if we don't cry out to God 00:13:55.199 --> 00:13:57.500 in prayer and dependence on Him, 00:13:57.559 --> 00:13:59.500 we'll often turn to other people 00:13:59.500 --> 00:14:01.359 and start demanding 00:14:01.359 --> 00:14:03.759 insistently from them. 00:14:05.959 --> 00:14:07.279 Notice what Samuel did. 00:14:08.219 --> 00:14:08.879 Verse 6. 00:14:09.279 --> 00:14:10.399 He heard the people's request. 00:14:10.500 --> 00:14:11.419 The first thing he does, 00:14:12.259 --> 00:14:13.419 he prayed to the Lord. 00:14:14.500 --> 00:14:16.279 Even before he responded to them, 00:14:16.279 --> 00:14:17.579 he prayed to God. 00:14:18.500 --> 00:14:19.279 And then again, 00:14:19.379 --> 00:14:19.959 verse 21. 00:14:21.079 --> 00:14:22.500 He heard all the words of the people 00:14:22.500 --> 00:14:24.339 and it says he repeated them 00:14:24.339 --> 00:14:25.699 in the ears of the Lord. times, 00:14:44.620 --> 00:14:45.259 three times, 00:14:45.620 --> 00:14:47.519 the leaders of Israel pray. 00:14:48.839 --> 00:14:49.620 Chapter 7, 00:14:49.679 --> 00:14:50.339 verse 3 says, 00:14:50.439 --> 00:14:51.519 all the house of Israel 00:14:51.519 --> 00:14:53.279 lamented after the Lord. 00:14:54.519 --> 00:14:55.240 Chapter 7, 00:14:55.299 --> 00:14:55.699 verse 6, 00:14:55.759 --> 00:14:56.799 they gathered at Mizpah 00:14:56.799 --> 00:14:58.620 and fasted and said, 00:14:58.679 --> 00:14:59.919 we have sinned against the Lord. 00:15:01.199 --> 00:15:01.899 Chapter 7, 00:15:01.959 --> 00:15:02.279 verse 8, 00:15:02.319 --> 00:15:03.279 the people came to Samuel 00:15:03.279 --> 00:15:04.059 and asked him, 00:15:04.639 --> 00:15:06.419 don't stop crying out to the Lord 00:15:06.419 --> 00:15:07.519 on our behalf. 00:15:08.240 --> 00:15:09.579 And Samuel cried out to the Lord 00:15:09.579 --> 00:15:10.299 for them 00:15:10.299 --> 00:15:11.220 and God They don't pray to God themselves. 00:15:20.220 --> 00:15:21.539 They just come to Samuel 00:15:21.539 --> 00:15:22.799 and they demand. 00:15:23.439 --> 00:15:23.819 They say, 00:15:24.059 --> 00:15:24.819 give us a king. 00:15:25.199 --> 00:15:25.439 Samuel, 00:15:25.659 --> 00:15:27.079 you can solve our problems. 00:15:29.819 --> 00:15:31.620 Has someone ever come to you like that?
