come from different places, walks of life, 00:00:18.780 --> 00:00:23.160 and this is a text that is touched on a lot from a lot of different circles, 00:00:23.359 --> 00:00:25.699 a lot of different people, in a lot of different ways. 00:00:25.699 --> 00:00:34.019 We often hear expressions like conquer your Goliath or throw your stone of faith. 00:00:34.679 --> 00:00:40.700 Those are references to this text, and it's a way for us to kind of conceptualize, 00:00:41.500 --> 00:00:45.560 communicate this idea of overcoming trial, overcoming problems in our life. 00:00:47.399 --> 00:00:52.320 I think it is almost always well-meaning when people say these things, 00:00:52.320 --> 00:00:59.539 but the reality is I think there's so much more going on in this text than just that, as good as that is. 00:01:00.320 --> 00:01:03.939 And so my hope and my prayer is that we'll be able to walk through that today 00:01:03.939 --> 00:01:12.879 and see more of the true glory of this story, the truly good news that we have in Christ in 1st Samuel 17. 00:01:12.879 --> 00:01:19.719 So we're going to walk through this text together and just kind of highlight that ultimate reality, 00:01:19.839 --> 00:01:24.479 that redemptive historical reality that is meant to be displayed throughout this text. 00:01:25.039 --> 00:01:29.379 So again, starting in 1st Samuel 17, verse 1. 00:01:30.879 --> 00:01:33.739 Now the Philistines gathered their armies for battle, 00:01:33.739 --> 00:01:36.939 and they were gathered at Soca, which belongs to Judah, 00:01:37.219 --> 00:01:41.399 and encamped between Soca and Ezekiah and Ephesdamun. 00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:45.140 So this is near Bethlehem, about 15 miles from the town. 00:01:46.119 --> 00:01:46.699 In verse 2, 00:01:47.359 --> 00:01:49.959 And Saul, he's currently king, right, King Saul, 00:01:50.039 --> 00:01:54.899 and Saul and the men of Israel were gathered and encamped in the valley of Elah. 00:01:55.419 --> 00:01:58.399 And they drew up in the line of battle against the Philistines. 00:01:58.400 --> 00:02:01.440 And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, 00:02:01.640 --> 00:02:03.580 and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, 00:02:03.880 --> 00:02:05.100 with a valley between them. 00:02:05.980 --> 00:02:10.520 And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath of Now, most scholars have agreed a cubit is about 18 inches, 00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:12.759 which means Goliath rings in at 9 feet 9 inches. 00:03:13.500 --> 00:03:14.780 This is a big boy, right? 00:03:15.659 --> 00:03:16.560 Pretty big. 00:03:16.560 --> 00:03:26.800 The coat that weighs 5,000 shekels of bronze is 125 pounds. 00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:29.020 Now, I'm not a very big guy to begin just carrying 60-pound packs, 00:03:53.479 --> 00:03:55.819 much less fighting with a 60-pound pack. 00:03:56.539 --> 00:04:00.099 And yet, Goliath doubles that, 125 pounds. 00:04:00.099 --> 00:04:04.979 And on top of that, he's carrying the spear that the head of which, 00:04:05.120 --> 00:04:07.379 the end point, and anybody who's ever lifted anything, 00:04:07.479 --> 00:04:11.340 you know a pole, if it's heavier at the end, it's harder to balance. 00:04:11.859 --> 00:04:13.740 And his weight of his spear is at the end. 00:04:13.840 --> 00:04:15.299 It's in the head of the spear. This is a huge threat in this, and we're going to pick up on this in a bit. 00:05:29.879 --> 00:05:31.519 Back to the text in verse 9. 00:05:32.939 --> 00:05:35.639 If he is able to fight with me and kill me, meaning the Israelite, 00:05:35.719 --> 00:05:39.719 if your best champion can fight me and kill me, then we will be your servants. 00:05:40.719 --> 00:05:45.759 But if we prevail against him and kill him, then you should be our servants and serve us. 00:05:45.759 --> 00:05:50.319 And the Philistine said, I defy the ranks of Israel this day. 00:05:50.819 --> 00:05:52.819 Give me a man that we may fight together. 00:05:53.759 --> 00:05:54.759 This is bull talk. 00:05:56.060 --> 00:06:01.420 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid. 00:06:02.680 --> 00:06:04.779 I would be afraid, nine foot, nine inches. 00:06:04.779 --> 00:06:12.859 Now David was the son of an Ephraite, of Bethlehem and Judah, named Jesse, who had eight sons. 00:06:14.039 --> 00:06:18.039 In the days of Saul, the man was already old and advanced in years. 00:06:18.659 --> 00:06:21.339 The three oldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to battle. 00:06:22.079 --> 00:06:26.379 And the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eli, the firstborn, 00:06:26.919 --> 00:06:30.719 and next to him, Eben-Nadab, and the third, Shammah. 00:06:30.720 --> 00:06:33.120 But David was the youngest. 00:06:33.600 --> 00:06:35.260 The three eldest followed Saul. 00:06:35.880 --> 00:06:39.820 But David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem. 00:06:40.580 --> 00:06:41.320 Verse 16, 00:06:41.420 --> 00:06:46.860 For forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand, morning and evening. 00:06:49.820 --> 00:06:54.300 So for forty days and forty nights, this nine foot nine man, this beast of a man, 00:06:54.960 --> 00:06:59.720 he's taunting Israel, saying, send me your best, bring him out, I'll kill him right now. 00:06:59.720 --> 00:07:02.000 For forty days, forty nights, evening and morning. 00:07:02.180 --> 00:07:03.100 He's relentless. 00:07:04.860 --> 00:07:08.340 And I want to say, this is a temptation the Israelites are facing, right? 00:07:08.400 --> 00:07:10.880 It's a taunt, but it is a temptation, right? 00:07:11.320 --> 00:07:12.380 What kind of temptation? 00:07:13.560 --> 00:07:18.840 Temptation to fear, temptation to focus on the things of earth and not the things of God. 00:07:20.200 --> 00:07:24.200 The men of Israel not only failed as they caved to their fear and worldly thinking, 00:07:24.620 --> 00:07:25.540 but even Saul. 00:07:25.540 --> 00:07:30.220 And mind you, Saul, contextually, this is supposed to be Israel's champion. 00:07:30.660 --> 00:07:32.080 You know, he's a pretty big guy. 00:07:32.220 --> 00:07:34.260 He stood head and shoulders above the men of Israel. 00:07:34.939 --> 00:07:37.480 And yet, even he is cowering before Goliath. 00:07:38.120 --> 00:07:39.280 He's scared out of his mind. 00:07:39.279 --> 00:07:45.239 But he, too, had fallen away from God along with the rest of the house of Israel 00:07:45.239 --> 00:07:50.879 by focusing on this Goliath, his armor, his spear, his size, the things of this earth, right? 00:07:50.959 --> 00:07:52.459 Self-preservation is kicking in. 00:07:52.459 --> 00:07:59.680 But in the midst of all these failing men who are not obeying God in faith, 00:07:59.779 --> 00:08:02.359 who are not striking down this Philistine where he stands, 00:08:02.899 --> 00:08:08.759 we see David highlighted as someone who is from Bethlehem, from the tribe of Judah. 00:08:10.079 --> 00:08:11.139 Very important to note. 00:08:11.139 --> 00:08:14.339 So verse 17. 00:08:14.339 --> 00:08:18.479 And Jesse said to David his son, 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:22.699 Take for your brothers an ephaph of this parched grain and these ten loaves, 00:08:22.799 --> 00:08:24.839 and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers. 00:08:25.779 --> 00:08:28.639 Also take these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand. 00:08:29.339 --> 00:08:32.179 See if your brothers are well, and bring some token from them. 00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:37.620 Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the valley of Elah fighting the Philistines. 00:08:37.620 --> 00:08:41.419 And David rose early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper, 00:08:42.060 --> 00:08:46.120 and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded them. 00:08:46.399 --> 00:08:51.360 And he came to the encampment as the host was going out to the battle line, shouting the war cry. 00:08:52.480 --> 00:08:56.159 And Israel and the Philistines drew up for battle, army against army. 00:08:57.320 --> 00:08:59.960 And David left things in charge of the keeper of the baggage, 00:09:00.139 --> 00:09:02.759 and ran to the ranks, and went and greeted his brothers. 00:09:02.759 --> 00:09:04.340 And he talked with them, 00:09:05.100 --> 00:09:08.679 Behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, 00:09:09.039 --> 00:09:12.879 came up out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke the same words as before. 00:09:13.980 --> 00:09:15.080 And David heard him. 00:09:15.799 --> 00:09:18.899 All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, 00:09:19.319 --> 00:09:21.319 they fled from him and were much afraid. 00:09:22.139 --> 00:09:24.439 And the men of Israel said, 00:09:24.519 --> 00:09:26.200 Have you seen this man who comes up? 00:09:26.559 --> 00:09:29.059 Surely he has come up Israel are recorded first as seeing Goliath, 00:09:47.399 --> 00:09:48.859 and then fleeing in fear. 00:09:49.759 --> 00:09:52.799 This is a clear indication, as I already alluded to earlier, 00:09:53.159 --> 00:09:55.119 that these men are thinking in worldly terms. 00:09:55.199 --> 00:09:56.299 They're not thinking about God. 00:09:56.299 --> 00:10:00.159 They're thinking about this nine-foot, nine-inch monster, right? 00:10:01.379 --> 00:10:02.759 Their focus was out of place. 00:10:03.539 --> 00:10:06.139 And Israel, like Goliath, like the Philistine, 00:10:06.939 --> 00:10:10.679 they thought it was merely Israel being defied here, right? 00:10:11.519 --> 00:10:13.620 Goliath said, I will defy Israel this day, 00:10:13.679 --> 00:10:16.439 and now Israelite is confirming that and saying he's defying Israel, 00:10:16.539 --> 00:10:17.479 the nation, the people. 00:10:19.139 --> 00:10:23.839 And yet, no mention is made of this Philistine defying God by the men of Israel. 00:10:23.840 --> 00:10:27.660 They had forgotten the lesson of Joshua, 00:10:27.820 --> 00:10:33.180 where Israel feared many giants when they were about to enter the promised land, right? 00:10:33.220 --> 00:10:36.060 Many giants, they came back, 12 spies, two said, let's do it. 00:10:36.080 --> 00:10:38.460 The other 10 said, no, no, those are some big guys. 00:10:39.080 --> 00:10:40.820 And we all know how that story goes. 00:10:40.860 --> 00:10:43.519 Because of their sin, because of their lack of faith in God, 00:10:44.160 --> 00:10:45.879 and trusting the promise to take the land, 00:10:46.360 --> 00:10:48.139 they end up spending 40 years in the wilderness. 00:10:48.139 --> 00:10:52.120 It's similar, right? 00:10:52.319 --> 00:10:56.679 Goliath, for 40 days, morning and night, tempting Israel, 00:10:56.899 --> 00:10:57.980 saying, come out, fight me. 00:10:59.559 --> 00:11:01.240 This is similar to Eve, right? 00:11:01.299 --> 00:11:05.179 The fruit was a delight to her eyes, we know from Genesis, 00:11:05.679 --> 00:11:07.480 because she focused on the fruit. 00:11:07.580 --> 00:11:08.419 She looked at the fruit. 00:11:08.500 --> 00:11:10.779 She was considering the fruit in the words of the serpent, 00:11:10.919 --> 00:11:14.000 and not the words of God, right? 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:16.159 Which was temptation that led to sin. 00:11:18.820 --> 00:11:20.720 So just as in 1 Samuel 17, 00:11:20.840 --> 00:11:22.899 the men of Israel set their eyes on Goliath, 00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:25.039 a man, and it consumed them. 00:11:27.279 --> 00:11:28.980 But he was just that, a man. 00:11:30.039 --> 00:11:34.340 In fact, Samuel has set the stage for this in chapter 16, verse 7, right? 00:11:34.360 --> 00:11:36.000 The prior chapter, where God says, 00:11:36.500 --> 00:11:38.360 for the Lord sees not as man sees. 00:11:38.840 --> 00:11:41.279 Man looks on the outward appearance, right? 00:11:41.320 --> 00:11:42.620 The 9 foot 9 inch man. 00:11:42.620 --> 00:11:45.539 But the Lord looks on the heart. 00:11:46.639 --> 00:11:47.879 So this is a big theme. 00:11:49.159 --> 00:11:51.139 But picking back up in verse 26, 00:11:51.620 --> 00:11:54.600 And David said to the men who stood by him, 00:11:55.060 --> 00:11:57.940 What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine 00:11:57.940 --> 00:11:59.860 and takes away the reproach from Israel? 00:12:00.720 --> 00:12:03.279 For who is this uncircumcised Philistine 00:12:03.279 --> 00:12:06.860 that he should defy the armies of the living God? 00:12:07.639 --> 00:12:09.840 And the people answered him in the same way, 00:12:09.840 --> 00:12:12.620 So shall it be done to the man who kills him. 00:12:13.500 --> 00:12:16.420 So again, we just saw how Israel reacted to Goliath, 00:12:16.500 --> 00:12:18.980 but now we're seeing how David's reacting to Goliath. 00:12:19.399 --> 00:12:20.480 And what does David do? 00:12:20.519 --> 00:12:21.480 Well, he talks right back. 00:12:21.560 --> 00:12:23.759 He says, this is an uncircumcised Philistine 00:12:23.759 --> 00:12:25.720 who's defying the living God. 00:12:27.000 --> 00:12:27.360 Right? 00:12:27.360 --> 00:12:29.180 Now, this is not mere trash talk. 00:12:29.940 --> 00:12:34.120 This is a serious reminder of the Abrahamic covenant for Israel. 00:12:35.580 --> 00:12:35.820 Right? 00:12:35.879 --> 00:12:37.860 The Israelites, along with the Philistines, 00:12:37.960 --> 00:12:41.139 all believe this is a conflict merely between two countries. 00:12:41.240 --> 00:12:41.379 Right? 00:12:41.399 --> 00:12:44.919 They both said that this is a defilement of Israel. 00:12:45.600 --> 00:12:48.519 But David says it's a defilement of God. 00:12:49.600 --> 00:12:49.800 Right? 00:12:49.799 --> 00:12:52.759 It's a worldly concern for both armies, Philistine and Israelite, 00:12:53.019 --> 00:12:56.319 but a spiritual, God-centered concern for David. 00:12:58.439 --> 00:13:03.139 And this is why he says uncircumcised Philistine relates to the Abrahamic covenant. 00:13:03.399 --> 00:13:06.719 In other words, David is reminding the men of Israel that, 00:13:06.839 --> 00:13:08.539 hey, we are the seed of Abraham. 00:13:08.719 --> 00:13:11.759 We have promises from the God of Abraham, our father, 00:13:12.439 --> 00:13:13.559 who carried us through the wilderness, 00:13:13.779 --> 00:13:16.620 who carried us out of the house of Egypt, out of slavery. 00:13:16.620 --> 00:13:18.159 He helped us cross the Jordan. 00:13:18.279 --> 00:13:21.080 He helped us conquer this land that we're now trying to defend. 00:13:22.779 --> 00:13:22.860 Right? 00:13:23.000 --> 00:13:23.759 Rise up, men. 00:13:23.820 --> 00:13:25.600 Do you not believe in the promises recognizing that Goliath is outside of those promises. 00:13:34.519 --> 00:13:35.740 He's uncircumcised. 00:13:36.639 --> 00:13:40.019 Genesis 17, 8, where this covenant is made with Abraham. 00:13:40.200 --> 00:13:40.299 Right? 00:13:40.379 --> 00:13:41.360 God says to Abraham, 00:13:42.120 --> 00:13:45.680 I will give to you and to your offspring after you 00:13:45.679 --> 00:13:46.939 the land of your sojournings, 00:13:47.339 --> 00:13:48.539 all the land of Canaan, 00:13:48.939 --> 00:13:50.319 for an everlasting possession, 00:13:50.879 --> 00:13:52.199 and I will be their God. 00:13:53.199 --> 00:13:54.620 It's an everlasting possession. 00:13:54.759 --> 00:13:56.639 They don't have to worry about losing it, 00:13:56.679 --> 00:13:59.479 regardless of what giant Philistine 00:14:06.099 He remembers. 00:14:06.179 --> 00:14:07.699 This is an uncircumcised Philistine. 00:14:07.819 --> 00:14:09.159 He's outside of those promises. 00:14:09.500 --> 00:14:10.899 Let's take hold of the promise. 00:14:10.899 --> 00:14:11.259 Right? 00:14:11.259 --> 00:14:14.840 So this promise, 00:14:14.980 --> 00:14:15.460 this land, 00:14:15.559 --> 00:14:16.500 it includes Soka, 00:14:16.600 --> 00:14:17.500 it includes Azekah, 00:14:17.600 --> 00:14:18.720 it includes Ephesim, 00:14:18.799 --> 00:14:21.879 where the battle is taking place that we read about in verse 1. 00:14:24.059 --> 00:14:25.539 Further on in the covenant, though, 00:14:25.580 --> 00:14:26.080 with Abraham, 00:14:26.220 --> 00:14:27.100 it's important to note, 00:14:27.779 --> 00:14:28.559 God warns, 00:14:28.779 --> 00:14:30.360 any uncircumcised male 00:14:30.360 --> 00:14:33.000 who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin 00:14:33.000 --> 00:14:34.960 shall be cut off from his people. 00:14:35.379 --> 00:14:36.779 He has broken my covenant. 00:14:37.240 --> 00:14:39.200 That's Genesis 17, verse 14. 00:14:39.200 --> 00:14:40.720 Now, of course, 00:14:40.840 --> 00:14:42.860 Goliath was never in the covenant to begin with, 00:14:42.879 --> 00:14:43.780 as I've already said, 00:14:44.200 --> 00:14:45.759 but the warning stands nonetheless. 00:14:46.879 --> 00:14:48.480
