well. 00:00:23.320 --> 00:00:27.019 He was one of the twelve disciples and more. 00:00:27.019 --> 00:00:36.359 He was one of the inner circle of three, a best friend of Jesus, Peter, the fisherman from Galilee. 00:00:37.259 --> 00:00:39.200 Many of you know the story of Peter. 00:00:40.100 --> 00:00:41.759 He was called by Jesus. 00:00:42.799 --> 00:00:45.140 He left it all to follow Jesus. 00:00:46.019 --> 00:00:49.000 He was there for the many miracles that Jesus did. 00:00:50.140 --> 00:00:53.600 He was there for the many parables that Jesus taught. 00:00:53.600 --> 00:01:00.399 He was there when Jesus said the hard truths, the ones the people didn't like to hear. 00:01:01.539 --> 00:01:06.519 He was there when Jesus was challenged by his opponents, the religious leaders. 00:01:08.200 --> 00:01:14.640 Peter was there with Jesus in the upper room where Jesus washed the feet of all his disciples. 00:01:14.640 --> 00:01:21.000 He was there as Jesus broke bread and passed the cup around the table. 00:01:22.239 --> 00:01:28.480 Peter was there in the garden while Jesus was praying in deep anguish of soul. 00:01:28.480 --> 00:01:37.520 He was there with the sword in his hand when Judas came to betray Jesus with the temple guards. 00:01:39.120 --> 00:01:44.659 Peter was there in the courtyard of the high priest while Jesus' enemies had their way with him. 00:01:44.659 --> 00:01:52.259 And as Jesus came to be tried by Pilate and led away to be crucified, 00:01:52.420 --> 00:01:56.079 it doesn't say anywhere in the Bible in those moments where Peter was. 00:01:57.519 --> 00:02:02.599 No doubt he feared for his life, having been one of the closest followers of Jesus. 00:02:02.599 --> 00:02:10.819 Not only that, but he also bore the weight of his own personal betrayal of Jesus, 00:02:11.680 --> 00:02:17.259 having denied that he even knew the Lord three times in the middle of the night. 00:02:18.519 --> 00:02:22.039 But somewhere in the crowd, we suspect he was there, 00:02:22.879 --> 00:02:31.699 watching from a distance as Jesus was tried and led away and hung up to die on a cross. 00:02:32.599 --> 00:02:36.879 Peter was there three days later at the empty tomb. 00:02:38.079 --> 00:02:45.359 He was there behind the locked doors that evening when Jesus suddenly appeared to them all alive. 00:02:46.459 --> 00:02:53.879 Peter was there in Galilee some days later when Jesus had cooked breakfast for his disciples on the beach. 00:02:55.060 --> 00:03:01.900 He was there walking with Jesus after breakfast as Jesus charged him to take care of his sheep. 00:03:02.599 --> 00:03:11.180 And Peter was there some days later on the Mount of Olives when Jesus was taken up to heaven before their very eyes. 00:03:12.979 --> 00:03:20.259 Peter was there at Pentecost in the upper room when the spirit of Jesus came down upon them all. 00:03:20.259 --> 00:03:28.340 And he was there in the streets proclaiming Jesus of Nazareth that day and onward. on outward. 00:03:38.219 --> 00:03:50.020 And some years later, Peter sat down to write a letter to the followers of Jesus living far away in provinces and regions around the Mediterranean. 00:03:50.960 --> 00:03:52.300 It's a wonderful letter. 00:03:53.020 --> 00:03:56.639 It's full of reassuring truths about Jesus. 00:03:56.639 --> 00:04:02.500 It's full of practical instruction for Jesus' followers about how they should live for him. 00:04:03.859 --> 00:04:10.579 At one point in Peter's letter, he comes to talk about what to do when you're treated harshly. 00:04:11.459 --> 00:04:13.839 Or when you suffer unjustly. 00:04:15.379 --> 00:04:16.699 Think of that for a moment. 00:04:17.360 --> 00:04:23.699 What should you do if you're a follower of Jesus and are being treated unjustly? 00:04:23.699 --> 00:04:33.139 Or if you are suffering at the hands of someone who has sway, who has authority over you. 00:04:33.860 --> 00:04:35.459 Even though you've done nothing wrong. 00:04:37.439 --> 00:04:39.459 How would Peter answer that question? 00:04:40.579 --> 00:04:43.399 What would his counsel be to us? 00:04:44.800 --> 00:04:49.500 It's here that Peter's mind went back to those awful, soul-wrenching hours. 00:04:49.500 --> 00:04:53.759 When his best friend, his Lord, suffered. 00:04:55.740 --> 00:05:04.360 We're going to pick up the story or the words of Peter's letter in 1 Peter 2, verse 18. 00:05:08.540 --> 00:05:11.139 It starts as an address to slaves. 00:05:11.139 --> 00:05:15.959 Peter writes, 00:05:15.959 --> 00:05:17.279 Slaves, 00:05:18.279 --> 00:05:20.599 In reverent fear of God, 00:05:21.479 --> 00:05:24.120 Submit yourselves to your masters. 00:05:25.319 --> 00:05:28.079 Not only to those who are good and considerate, 00:05:28.279 -->
