00:01:35.140 --> 00:01:54.780 All right. 00:01:54.780 --> 00:02:00.239 So, you probably noticed that the Olympics started this week, right? 00:02:00.900 --> 00:02:03.200 Did you catch the opening ceremony on Friday? 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:08.159 It's always fun to watch the different national teams kind of march in to the opening ceremony, 00:02:08.159 --> 00:02:15.159 and you get to see the diversity of the country's flags and who gets to be the flag bearers at this particular Olympics. 00:02:15.159 --> 00:02:23.419 And, of course, you get to see, most importantly, maybe, the outfits that they've chosen to wear, right? 00:02:23.579 --> 00:02:28.039 You know, the U.S. decided to wear these mid-90 throwback parkas. 00:02:28.500 --> 00:02:30.879 That was fun the first time around. 00:02:30.879 --> 00:02:35.319 Other countries wore something more stylish, you know? 00:02:36.819 --> 00:02:40.759 Others were more unique or wore something more particular to their own national culture. 00:02:41.780 --> 00:02:47.699 But, you know, each country kind of in their own way saying in that moment on the national stage or on the international stage, 00:02:47.879 --> 00:02:48.719 00:02:55.780 Now, imagine. 00:02:56.719 --> 00:03:02.840 Imagine if the church, if our church even, were to march out into the opening ceremony. 00:03:04.840 --> 00:03:06.340 What would we be known by? 00:03:07.159 --> 00:03:09.240 What would be our distinguishing mark? 00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:11.680 What would be our close of choice? 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:17.199 You know, throughout the New Testament, there are a number of things that ought to mark the church. 00:03:17.620 --> 00:03:20.539 There are a number of things that ought to be our defining features. 00:03:20.539 --> 00:03:24.780 Of course, there's an allegiance to the truth of the gospel, of God's word, 00:03:25.400 --> 00:03:29.699 holding Jesus in the highest possible place of honor and worship. 00:03:31.199 --> 00:03:34.219 But, you know, along with that and flowing from that, 00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:40.019 the distinguishing mark again and again of the church is more than just holding to the truth. 00:03:40.139 --> 00:03:45.039 Along with that, the defining feature that we see is love. 00:03:45.039 --> 00:03:52.280 The church is the people as we march out into the arena of the nations around us. 00:03:52.519 --> 00:03:56.120 The church is meant to be the people that genuinely loves one another. 00:03:56.359 --> 00:03:58.539 That's the clothing that we wear. 00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:02.340 And in our passage, Peter is reminding us, 00:04:02.419 --> 00:04:05.319 and he's calling us again to this central, 00:04:05.620 --> 00:04:09.060 essential reality of what it means to be the church. 00:04:09.060 --> 00:04:11.319 You see the command right there in the beginning in verse 22. 00:04:11.599 --> 00:04:15.500 And this whole paragraph is telling us to love one another. 00:04:17.180 --> 00:04:19.720 That's the big idea of this part of 1 Peter. 00:04:20.420 --> 00:04:21.300 Love one another. 00:04:23.439 --> 00:04:26.699 But sadly, the church isn't always known by that set of clothes, is it? 00:04:26.699 --> 00:04:32.759 Some of you maybe have experienced churches where there isn't love, 00:04:33.039 --> 00:04:39.420 but hypocrisy and envy and slander and other things like Peter lists in chapter 2, verse 1. 00:04:41.039 --> 00:04:44.240 And if that's been your experience, let me say that I'm deeply sorry. 00:04:45.779 --> 00:04:47.539 But this isn't how it should be. 00:04:49.039 --> 00:04:52.599 And Peter's going to show us here a different way. 00:04:52.600 --> 00:04:56.900 He commands us to love one another, but he doesn't leave it there. 00:04:57.480 --> 00:04:59.900 He goes on to kind of drill down a little deeper. 00:05:00.340 --> 00:05:06.120 And in this text, he's going to show us three things about this love that we should have for one another, 00:05:06.200 --> 00:05:07.280 this Christian love. 00:05:08.879 --> 00:05:11.720 And first, he's going to show us the nature of this love. 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:13.420 What must our love be like? 00:05:13.939 --> 00:05:15.320 That's the first thing he's going to say. 00:05:15.379 --> 00:05:18.439 And then second, he's going to show us the ground of this love. 00:05:18.800 --> 00:05:20.640 Why should we love like this? 00:05:20.639 --> 00:05:23.939 And then third, he's going to show us the growth of this love. 00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:27.079 How can we grow and become more and more people who actually do love? 00:05:27.779 --> 00:05:29.860 So that's where we're going to head in our sermon this morning. 00:05:30.219 --> 00:05:31.000 So let's take a look. 00:05:31.620 --> 00:05:34.379 First, Peter shows us the nature of Christian love. 00:05:34.639 --> 00:05:37.419 Your love, he says, must look like this. 00:05:37.919 --> 00:05:38.939 Listen again to verse 22. 00:05:39.419 --> 00:05:43.699 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, 00:05:44.419 --> 00:05:48.240 love one another earnestly from a pure heart. 00:05:48.240 --> 00:05:50.560 So what should our love look like? 00:05:51.560 --> 00:05:55.460 You must love one another earnestly, Peter says. 00:05:57.199 --> 00:06:00.019 Now notice, Peter's particularly talking here about brotherly love. 00:06:00.120 --> 00:06:04.780 That is, the love of Christian brothers and sisters in the church, in the family of God for one another. 00:06:04.939 --> 00:06:07.079 Remember last week in verses 13 through 21, 00:06:07.620 --> 00:06:13.180 Peter talked primarily about Christians' posture towards the world and toward our old life before we became Christians. 00:06:13.180 --> 00:06:16.600 And he said, in that regard, we're meant to be distinct. 00:06:17.259 --> 00:06:19.280 So the key word there was holy. 00:06:19.519 --> 00:06:21.280 You know, we're pilgrims, we're exiles, we're strangers. 00:06:21.420 --> 00:06:24.500 And God wants us to be beautifully distinct in all that we do. 00:06:24.780 --> 00:06:28.800 But here, in our text this morning, Peter's talking about our posture not towards the world, 00:06:28.879 --> 00:06:32.860 not towards our former lives, but toward fellow believers, toward one another. 00:06:33.079 --> 00:06:35.220 And the key word here is love. 00:06:35.220 --> 00:06:38.760 And that love, he says, must be earnest. 00:06:40.920 --> 00:06:43.280 And that word earnestly here is a great word. 00:06:44.340 --> 00:06:47.740 You know, it means more than just doing something with deep feeling. 00:06:48.380 --> 00:06:51.440 It means doing something with deep constancy. 00:06:53.040 --> 00:06:58.820 The word earnest here carries the idea of something being stretched out, like a piece of cloth. 00:06:58.819 --> 00:07:03.120 Our love should be a strenuous love, Peter says. 00:07:03.180 --> 00:07:04.980 A constant, an intentional love. 00:07:05.259 --> 00:07:06.519 A love that stretches us. 00:07:08.899 --> 00:07:14.360 You know, this is the kind of love that a husband or a wife shows when after a long day of work, 00:07:14.939 --> 00:07:15.680 you listen. 00:07:16.199 --> 00:07:19.240 You really listen to how your spouse's day was. 00:07:20.459 --> 00:07:26.180 And that's a love that stretches you when all you want to do is get home and relax and retreat and veg out. 00:07:26.180 --> 00:07:30.959 But instead, you turn toward each other and you give each other your best. 00:07:32.540 --> 00:07:35.180 That's the kind of stretching love that Peter's talking about. 00:07:36.240 --> 00:07:42.879 You know, this is the kind of love that decides to send a text to a struggling Christian friend in your small group. 00:07:43.620 --> 00:07:46.139 It's the kind of stretching love that invites them to coffee, 00:07:46.240 --> 00:07:48.699 even though you're not really sure what you can do to help, 00:07:48.939 --> 00:07:51.519 but still you stretch yourself and you spend some time with them. 00:07:51.680 --> 00:07:53.860 And maybe you offer to pray or offer to listen, 00:07:53.860 --> 00:07:56.300 and offer just to be present with them as they walk through trials. 00:07:58.920 --> 00:08:00.860 You know, this is the kind of stretching love 00:08:00.860 --> 00:08:05.300 that leads you to do something bold and fearless and courageous, 00:08:05.300 --> 00:08:08.460 like assisting with a children's class on Sundays. 00:08:10.280 --> 00:08:12.300 Even though you're not sure kids are your thing, 00:08:12.720 --> 00:08:16.199 and even though it means you might have to stick around for the second service. 00:08:16.199 --> 00:08:18.899 It stretches you a little bit. 00:08:19.699 --> 00:08:21.139 Or it leads you to help with youth group, 00:08:21.199 --> 00:08:23.659 even though teenagers sort of intimidate you. 00:08:23.779 --> 00:08:26.680 Or it leads you to help with a mentoring program through Bridges of Hope, 00:08:26.719 --> 00:08:31.360 even though you're not sure what it might look like to come alongside a kid who has a different background than you. 00:08:32.559 --> 00:08:35.200 This is the stretching love that leads you maybe to host a small group, 00:08:35.379 --> 00:08:38.939 even though it means giving up one whole night a week to open up your home. 00:08:39.360 --> 00:08:42.779 Even though your home might be a little messier than you'd like in the middle of the work week. 00:08:42.779 --> 00:08:51.500 This is the stretching love that leads you to introduce yourself to a newcomer on Sundays and welcome them, 00:08:51.919 --> 00:08:53.679 even if you're an introvert. 00:08:56.559 --> 00:08:59.819 This is the stretching love that leads you to forgive 00:08:59.819 --> 00:09:03.480 when a brother or sister in the church has offended or wronged you, 00:09:03.799 --> 00:09:05.179 and they ask for your forgiveness. 00:09:07.500 --> 00:09:12.199 This is the stretching kind of love that leads you to open up about your weaknesses, 00:09:12.779 --> 00:09:14.799 to a trusted Christian friend or two, 00:09:16.139 --> 00:09:17.500 asking for prayer and help. 00:09:19.819 --> 00:09:23.339 This earnest, stretching love, this is the kind of love that shows up, 00:09:23.659 --> 00:09:26.259 even when it's costly, even when it's inconvenient, 00:09:26.459 --> 00:09:28.500 even when it's a bit outside your comfort zone. 00:09:30.279 --> 00:09:33.480 Peter says, love one another earnestly, brothers and sisters. 00:09:33.480 --> 00:09:40.440 And notice, notice that this earnest love, it isn't optional. 00:09:41.200 --> 00:09:45.580 It's not just kind of for advanced Christians or really serious Christians. 00:09:45.899 --> 00:09:49.279 This is the kind of love for all Christians that we should all show. 00:09:49.539 --> 00:09:50.340 Now, how do we know that? 00:09:50.379 --> 00:09:53.420 How do we know that this isn't optional love, but love for all Christians? 00:09:54.139 --> 00:09:56.460 Because in the first part of this verse, verse 22, 00:09:57.100 --> 00:09:59.700 Peter is describing our conversion. 00:09:59.700 --> 00:10:03.440 He's talking there about what's true of every Christian. 00:10:03.920 --> 00:10:06.759 After all, he says, you've obeyed the truth. 00:10:07.440 --> 00:10:11.000 And for Peter, the truth here is the truth of the gospel. 00:10:11.860 --> 00:10:14.960 And to obey the truth of the gospel is to believe it, to receive it, 00:10:15.160 --> 00:10:17.200 to center your life around Jesus as Lord. 00:10:18.080 --> 00:10:21.900 And he says, by obeying the truth, by submitting to the claims of the gospel, 00:10:22.200 --> 00:10:23.600 your soul's been purified. 00:10:24.120 --> 00:10:25.160 You've been cleansed. 00:10:25.220 --> 00:10:26.140 You've been made new. 00:10:26.139 --> 00:10:28.860 That's what's true of every Christian. 00:10:29.299 --> 00:10:31.620 But then he says, what's all of that for? 00:10:32.259 --> 00:10:33.939 What's the point of our conversion? 00:10:35.279 --> 00:10:38.679 Well, it's for, Peter says, sincere brotherly love. 00:10:39.659 --> 00:10:44.159 So this sincere, earnest, stretching love, it isn't optional for Christians. 00:10:44.220 --> 00:10:45.059 It's the whole point. 00:10:46.639 --> 00:10:50.899 You know, after all, the reason you kind of pump up your bike tires 00:10:50.899 --> 00:10:56.879 after it's been sitting in the garage all winter isn't so that you can put the bike back in the garage 00:10:56.879 --> 00:10:58.000 to just gather dust, right? 00:10:58.059 --> 00:10:58.240 No. 00:10:58.579 --> 00:11:01.379 You pump the air back into the tire so you can go out 00:11:01.379 --> 00:11:04.639 and so you can experience the joy of riding again, right? 00:11:05.819 --> 00:11:07.559 And our conversion is like that. 00:11:07.559 --> 00:11:14.459 God's aim in saving us is to create a community that loves one another 00:11:14.459 --> 00:11:18.619 and in loving one another to display his love to the world 00:11:18.619 --> 00:11:22.179 so that when we march out among the nations, 00:11:22.359 --> 00:11:24.759 they see a little picture of the love of God 00:11:24.759 --> 00:11:26.439 and how we love one another. 00:11:29.339 --> 00:11:31.500 So this is the nature of what our love must look like. 00:11:31.599 --> 00:11:35.079 We must love one another earnestly with a love that stretches us. 00:11:35.080 --> 00:11:38.840 But as we turn to the second point of our passage then, 00:11:38.879 --> 00:11:42.240 we have to admit that this kind of love is a real challenge, isn't it? 00:11:43.300 --> 00:11:46.340 By definition, a love that stretches us doesn't come easily. 00:11:48.259 --> 00:11:53.440 And part of the reason it doesn't come easily is because, well, think about it. 00:11:54.120 --> 00:11:57.639 It takes time and it takes energy and it takes resources. 00:11:57.639 --> 00:12:04.320 And, well, I'm just not sure I have enough time or energy or resources to do something like that. 00:12:05.639 --> 00:12:07.340 After all, I have a lot of things to do. 00:12:07.420 --> 00:12:26.059 --> 00:12:36.039 In verses 23 through 25, he moves from telling us about the nature of love to a second point where he tells us about the ground of this love. 00:12:36.779 --> comes from the fact, Peter says, that we've been born again by God's imperishable word. 00:13:22.620 --> 00:13:27.899 Notice how Peter emphasizes again and again the constancy, the permanence of God's Peter quotes Isaiah 40. 00:13:44.059 --> 00:13:46.360 And we read Isaiah 40 earlier in the service. 00:13:46.500 --> 00:13:48.879 And in the context, what's Isaiah talking about? 00:13:48.960 --> 00:13:52.360 Isaiah is talking about the Old Testament return from exile. 00:13:53.159 --> 00:14:00.240 God's people had been trampled by nations, seemingly more powerful, seemingly more permanent than they were. 00:14:00.240 --> 00:14:03.519 But Isaiah says, don't you see? 00:14:05.279 --> 00:14:10.419 Don't you see that all flesh is like grass and all its glory like a flower of grass? 00:14:10.539 --> 00:14:12.480 Consider these great nations, he says. 00:14:13.460 --> 00:14:17.399 All their armies, all their monuments, all their rulers. 00:14:17.580 --> 00:14:22.360 Consider their glory, the wealth that they amass, the power that they wield. 00:14:22.620 --> 00:14:23.500 Do you see it? 00:14:23.500 --> 00:14:27.240 It's ultimately like the grass of the field. 00:14:28.700 --> 00:14:50.220 --> 00:14:51.419 Persia withered and fell. 00:14:51.419 --> 00:14:54.379 Alexander's Greece withered and fell. 00:14:55.279 --> 00:14:56.399 Rome withered and fell. 00:14:57.659 --> 00:14:59.839 Everything moves from life to death. 00:15:00.319 --> 00:15:01.599 From order to decay. 00:15:01.839 --> 00:15:05.079 Everything is perishable and destined for dust. 00:15:06.599 --> 00:15:08.539 Except one. 00:15:10.219 --> 00:15:15.120 God is the one true living and abiding one. 00:15:15.120 --> 00:15:18.480 Who never changes and never fades. 00:15:18.480 --> 00:15:25.500 And therefore the word of this God must also be living and abiding, remaining forever. 00:15:27.340 --> 00:15:34.080 To the Old Testament exiles, this meant that God's promise of return and restoration 00:15:45.639 The word of God would stand and it would all fade. 00:15:47.259 --> 00:15:52.960 But you know, as New Testament believers, we see the even greater promise. 00:15:53.659 --> 00:16:00.700 Because Peter says, this word, this is the good news that's been preached to you, Christians. 00:16:00.700 --> 00:16:05.560 The message of the apostles that they had heard and received. 00:16:05.780 --> 00:16:07.300 The good news about Jesus. 00:16:08.360 --> 00:16:11.920 This is the fullness of God's living and abiding word. 00:16:12.700 --> 00:16:18.660 What the prophets foresaw was not just a word that brought a mere return from political or geographical exile. 00:16:18.980 --> 00:16:22.340 The word of the gospel has brought life from death. 00:16:22.340 --> 00:16:31.120 This word, Peter says, it's the thing that's made you born anew. 00:16:32.700 --> 00:16:34.800 You've come alive. 00:16:37.340 --> 00:16:38.840 And what is this gospel? 00:16:39.800 --> 00:16:44.740 What is this message that the apostles proclaim that the prophets foresaw? 00:16:45.080 --> 00:16:48.139 What is this message that the church continues to proclaim? 00:16:48.139 --> 00:16:51.439 On the authority of the apostles' words preserved for us in Scripture? 00:16:52.539 --> 00:16:54.139 What is this good news? 00:16:55.600 --> 00:16:57.379 That can make us born again. 00:16:58.220 --> 00:16:59.340 Come alive. 00:17:01.500 --> 00:17:03.220 Well, friends, this is the good news. 00:17:03.879 --> 00:17:08.299 And you see it throughout all the pages of Scripture and all the pages of the New Testament. 00:17:08.960 --> 00:17:12.700 The good news that there's one God who made us all. 00:17:13.440 --> 00:17:16.920 One God who's holy and just and good. 00:17:16.920 --> 00:17:23.100 And this God made us humans in his image to love and obey him. 00:17:24.060 --> 00:17:28.000 But instead of loving God and obeying him and loving one another, 00:17:29.100 --> 00:17:30.220 instead we rebelled. the living God, 00:17:39.960 --> 00:17:43.759 we of course fell under the sentence of death. 00:17:43.759 --> 00:17:48.460 But God in his love saw us, 00:17:49.359 --> 00:17:51.000 his sinful image bearers, 00:17:51.720 --> 00:17:53.640 languishing under the sentence of death. 00:17:54.339 --> 00:17:57.299 And rather than destroying us in his justice, 00:17:58.299 --> 00:18:01.140 he became one of us in the incarnation. 00:18:02.140 --> 00:18:05.539 In Jesus, God took on a fully human nature. 00:18:05.539 --> 00:18:08.420 And after living a perfect life in our place, 00:18:08.500 --> 00:18:09.680 the life that we should have lived, 00:18:09.960 --> 00:18:13.019 he loved us in the most sincere and earnest way imaginable. 00:18:13.420 --> 00:18:16.359 In love, Jesus was literally stretched on a cross. 00:18:16.359 --> 00:18:19.799 And he died the death that we deserve to die. 00:18:21.399 --> 00:18:22.799 And then three days later, 00:18:22.899 --> 00:18:24.979 God the Father raised Jesus from the dead, 00:18:26.439 --> 00:18:29.939 declaring his conquest of sin and death, 00:18:30.179 --> 00:18:32.819 so that all who turn to the Lord Jesus 00:18:32.819 --> 00:18:34.919 and who are united to him, 00:18:35.279 --> 00:18:36.539 not through good works, 00:18:36.799 --> 00:18:37.819 not through trying hard, 00:18:37.879 --> 00:18:39.899 but united to him simply through
