It's a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s A.D. 00:00:09.419 --> 00:00:14.439 It's called Romans because Paul writes it to the churches in the city of Rome. 00:00:15.359 --> 00:00:18.320 And at the end of the day, it is a letter that is about the gospel. 00:00:18.920 --> 00:00:23.519 It's about the good news of Jesus' life and death and resurrection. 00:00:24.660 --> 00:00:28.219 Last week, we started chapter 6, and we had this question. 00:00:28.219 --> 00:00:33.379 If God forgives sin, why not just sin more? 00:00:34.240 --> 00:00:36.460 And that's the question Paul asked in verse 1. 00:00:36.539 --> 00:00:37.920 He said, what shall we say then? 00:00:38.479 --> 00:00:41.859 Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 00:00:42.379 --> 00:00:45.640 If you were here last week, you'll remember the answer was no. 00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:47.620 That doesn't make any sense. 00:00:48.320 --> 00:00:51.000 It doesn't make any sense because you've died to sin, life, 00:00:59.759 --> 00:01:03.200 which is the life that's empowered by the Holy Spirit, 00:01:03.320 --> 00:01:09.579 the life where the same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead is at work looked at in chapter 5, verses 12 through 21. 00:01:57.540 --> 00:01:59.340 Okay, so we're going to focus this morning. 00:01:59.440 --> 00:02:02.980 Not every verse is going to receive the same amount of attention 00:02:02.980 --> 00:02:05.719 because some verses are repeating what's come before. 00:02:06.100 --> 00:02:08.719 Our focus this morning is on two new concepts, 00:02:08.719 --> 00:02:11.240 verses 6 and 7. 00:02:11.439 --> 00:02:14.759 We're going to see that we are free from the slavery of sin. 00:02:16.340 --> 00:02:19.219 Verse 11, Paul tells us, 00:02:19.599 --> 00:02:23.360 consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. 00:02:23.900 --> 00:02:25.500 So our focus is in those two areas, 00:02:26.039 --> 00:02:28.199 focusing especially on verses 6 and 7, 00:02:28.879 --> 00:02:31.379 the idea of being free from the slavery of sin. 00:02:32.159 --> 00:02:33.479 Focusing also on verse 11, 00:02:33.479 --> 00:02:35.979 we consider to it, remember that this is God's word. 00:02:51.319 --> 00:02:55.199 And Jeremiah chapter 23 tells us that God's word is like a hammer 00:02:55.199 --> 00:02:57.939 that breaks a rock into pieces, 00:02:58.520 --> 00:03:04.740 which is a way of saying that there is nothing more powerful than God's word. 00:03:05.539 --> 00:03:08.259 So that's why we read it now, Romans chapter 6, 00:03:08.719 00:05:09.620 --> 00:05:17.280 A couple of years ago, a friend of mine took a trip to the sand dunes in southern Colorado. 00:05:18.220 --> 00:05:23.759 And as she was hiking up the sand dunes, she came to the hardest part of the trail. 00:05:23.759 --> 00:05:27.180 She's hiking barefoot through the sand, and the trail becomes narrow. 00:05:27.899 --> 00:05:31.180 And as she was coming along, trying to get to the top, 00:05:31.279 --> 00:05:37.399 there was this obnoxious woman who was spread out, laying down on the ground, 00:05:38.300 --> 00:05:40.219 just blocking the path entirely. 00:05:41.099 --> 00:05:45.800 And not only was she just spread out, lying down, blocking the path entirely, 00:05:46.120 --> 00:05:48.319 but she was actually smirking. 00:05:48.319 --> 00:05:52.480 And refusing to move as people would come up along this trail. 00:05:52.540 --> 00:05:55.699 And you'd think, on a normal trail, this wouldn't be a big deal. 00:05:56.019 --> 00:05:57.319 But this is the sand dunes. 00:05:57.360 --> 00:06:00.560 And so it's hard enough as it is to walk on the trail. 00:06:00.899 --> 00:06:06.639 It's even harder to navigate around someone who is spread out on the 00:07:08.939 --> 00:07:10.879 that I was in Adam and now I'm in Christ 00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:14.060 and the power of sin has ceased to have authority over me 00:07:14.060 --> 00:07:15.500 and that when Christ died, I died, 00:07:15.680 --> 00:07:18.640 and that the reign of sin no longer controls the center of my heart 00:07:18.640 --> 00:07:20.220 and so I've risen to resurrection life, 00:07:20.300 --> 00:07:21.720 which is the newness of life that's empowered 00:07:21.720 --> 00:07:23.500 by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 00:07:24.759 --> 00:07:26.259 She could have said all of that, 00:07:26.620 --> 00:07:30.040 but she captured all of that by simply saying, 00:07:30.040 --> 00:07:35.720 I remembered I am a child of God. 00:07:36.319 --> 00:07:38.100 That's why I don't kick sand in people's face. 00:07:39.800 --> 00:07:44.420 Romans chapter 6 is detailed and technical and complicated. 00:07:44.980 --> 00:07:47.480 Romans chapter 5 was the same way, 00:07:47.600 --> 00:07:49.020 but at the end of the day, 00:07:50.500 --> 00:07:53.480 as we move through those things and understand them, 00:07:53.560 --> 00:07:55.280 I want you to remember that. 00:07:55.279 --> 00:07:59.219 The Christian does not continue in sin 00:07:59.219 --> 00:08:01.679 because the Christian is a child of God. 00:08:02.319 --> 00:08:03.339 It's as simple as that.
