early church father, late 4th, early 5th century, preached through the Gospel of John, 00:01:23.060 --> 00:01:25.659 and he stated on one occasion, 00:01:25.840 --> 00:01:34.359 the Gospel of John is shallow enough for a child to paddle in and deep enough for an elephant to swim in. 00:01:34.920 --> 00:01:40.719 And when you read through the Gospel of John, you immediately understand what Augustine meant. 00:01:40.840 --> 00:01:52.420 You read beautifully crafted narratives that just sweep you along with their simplicity, their richness, their evocativeness. 00:01:53.359 --> 00:01:58.100 Think of Jesus' encounter with the woman in John chapter 8. 00:01:58.760 --> 00:02:02.879 It's vivid, it's powerful, it's imaginative. 00:02:02.879 --> 00:02:08.900 And Augustine himself, there are places in John where you find yourself utterly out of your depth. 00:03:28.579 --> 00:03:37.060 Think of the opening words of the Gospel, which really are the window through which we are to 00:04:10.019 And so from beginning to end, John is out not simply to inform us, but to persuade us. 00:04:10.020 --> 00:04:18.680 And right at the outset, he confronts us with profundity that takes us
