salvation, 00:01:22.400 --> 00:01:31.219 I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. 00:01:32.100 --> 00:01:38.100 For --> 00:03:07.119 So Judas is well established throughout Scripture. 00:03:07.279 --> 00:03:10.039 We know that this is the brother of Jesus, 00:03:10.359 --> 00:03:13.099 as we know him as the name Jude in the book of Jude. 00:03:13.339 --> 00:03:15.379 But it's the same guy. 00:03:16.019 --> 00:03:19.539 And we learn in the Gospel of John, chapter 7, verse 5, 00:03:19.939 --> 00:03:23.439 that Jesus' own brothers did not believe in him, 00:03:23.500 --> 00:03:28.679 meaning Jude was not a believer during Christ's first advent. 00:03:28.680 --> 00:03:32.379 But by the time Jesus is resurrected, 00:03:32.379 --> 00:03:35.000 we read in Acts chapter 1, verse 14, 00:03:35.640 --> 00:03:38.240 that all these believers, with one accord, 00:03:38.800 --> 00:03:40.319 were devoting themselves to prayer, 00:03:40.439 --> 00:03:42.540 together with the women and Mary, 00:03:42.640 --> 00:03:44.740 the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. 00:03:45.939 --> 00:03:49.020 So Jude is among those who has placed faith in Christ 00:03:49.020 --> 00:03:51.420 after his resurrection appearances. 00:03:51.540 --> 00:03:54.319 At that point, he believed this is the Messiah, 00:03:54.500 --> 00:03:57.000 the one true Son of God. 00:03:57.000 --> 00:04:02.439 But who is Jude that he should write such a letter, 00:04:02.520 --> 00:04:05.599 that he should have such authority to do this, 00:04:05.800 --> 00:04:10.219 to be an author of one of our canonical books of the Bible? 00:04:11.240 --> 00:04:14.180 And so looking back at verse 1, we see his authority. 00:04:14.420 --> 00:04:18.079 Jude is a doulos, or a slave, or bondservant, 00:04:18.339 --> 00:04:21.579 of Jesus Christ and the brother of James. 00:04:21.579 --> 00:04:26.539 So on the one hand, this introduction gives you a sense of Jude's humility. 00:04:27.740 --> 00:04:30.939 And he doesn't introduce himself as the half-brother of Christ, 00:04:31.039 --> 00:04:32.560 but much like his brother James, 00:04:32.939 --> 00:04:37.500 he introduces himself merely as a servant or a slave of Christ. 00:04:37.500 --> 00:04:43.300 So the only relationship he expresses to Christ is that slave of servant. 00:04:47.139 --> 00:04:49.759 And sometimes that word is translated as servant, 00:04:49.860 --> 00:04:51.500 but really means slave. 00:04:52.240 --> 00:04:52.699 He is saying, 00:04:52.860 --> 00:04:54.019 I am no longer my own, 00:04:54.100 --> 00:04:58.220 but I am owned by and exist for Jesus Christ. 00:04:58.319 --> 00:05:01.339 So this captures Jude's humility in one sense. 00:05:02.240 --> 00:05:05.279 Primarily, though, this title captures his authority. 00:05:05.279 --> 00:05:07.539 So when we hear the word slave, right, 00:05:07.599 --> 00:05:09.679 we often think of people being mistreated, 00:05:09.819 --> 00:05:10.599 people being oppressed. 00:05:11.039 --> 00:05:14.659 We think of the sinful atrocities that happened in our history, 00:05:14.839 --> 00:05:16.000 in British history. 00:05:16.619 --> 00:05:20.539 But this is not necessarily the connotation in the ancient world. 00:05:20.619 --> 00:05:21.819 It was different. 00:05:23.159 --> 00:05:26.239 In fact, a slave's power, his financial standing, 00:05:26.539 --> 00:05:33.019 his stature in society often rose or fell with that of their masters. 00:05:33.019 --> 00:05:35.379 So, for instance, in the Greco-Roman world, 00:05:35.500 --> 00:05:38.680 if you were a slave, a personal slave to the Roman emperor, 00:05:39.039 --> 00:05:41.279 you were actually probably more powerful, 00:05:41.479 --> 00:05:44.620 more wealthy, and better off than most free men. 00:05:45.379 --> 00:05:45.779 Right? 00:05:45.839 --> 00:05:50.039 And men would fear you because you have the emperor's ear. 00:05:51.479 --> 00:05:54.620 So slaves often had the ability to spend the money of their masters, 00:05:54.779 --> 00:05:56.319 to speak on behalf of their masters, 00:05:56.479 --> 00:05:59.439 to make and create businesses on behalf of their masters. 00:06:00.099 --> 00:06:01.240 And so it is with Christians. 00:06:01.240 --> 00:06:05.259 This is why Jude, James, and others would refer to themselves as slaves of Christ. 00:06:05.579 --> 00:06:07.780 They're expressing that we serve him, 00:06:07.840 --> 00:06:08.980 we're committed to him wholly, 00:06:09.180 --> 00:06:12.019 but also we carry with us authority. 00:06:12.180 --> 00:06:15.379 We speak on behalf of our master, 00:06:15.480 --> 00:06:17.840 of our Lord, of Jesus Christ. 00:06:18.860 --> 00:06:20.939 So on the one sense, again, it is his humility, 00:06:21.519 --> 00:06:23.139 but primarily he's saying, 00:06:23.220 --> 00:06:25.300 I'm writing to you with authority. 00:06:25.420 --> 00:06:28.400 I write behalf of Jesus Christ. 00:06:28.399 --> 00:06:30.339 And the cherry on top, 00:06:30.899 --> 00:06:32.719 who establishes Jude's authority, 00:06:32.839 --> 00:06:35.439 is the fact that he's the brother of James, 00:06:35.560 --> 00:06:38.839 the leader of the Jerusalem church. 00:06:38.939 --> 00:06:41.639 So I just love Jude's opening statement, 00:06:41.739 --> 00:06:44.899 because he makes his authority so clear and so plain, 00:06:44.979 --> 00:06:47.620 yet does so cloaked in humility, 00:06:48.179 --> 00:06:51.039 with only a few words. 00:06:51.040 --> 00:06:57.400 I pray that we would all exercise our various authorities with such wisdom and humility. 00:06:58.700 --> 00:07:00.100 So we know who Jude is, 00:07:00.160 --> 00:07:01.240 but whom is he writing to? 00:07:01.300 --> 00:07:02.460 Well, again, verse 1, 00:07:03.260 --> 00:07:05.120 Jude is writing to those who, quote, 00:07:05.379 --> 00:07:06.280 are called, 00:07:06.840 --> 00:07:08.660 those who are beloved in God the Father, 00:07:08.720 --> 00:07:11.960 and those who are kept for Jesus Christ. 00:07:12.060 --> 00:07:12.480 In other words, 00:07:12.520 --> 00:07:14.640 he's writing to true Christians, 00:07:14.639 --> 00:07:16.579 and given the nature of the letter 00:07:16.579 --> 00:07:18.680 and how much he references Jewish writings, 00:07:18.779 --> 00:07:21.579 these are probably Jewish Christians. 00:07:22.659 --> 00:07:23.379 Beyond that, 00:07:23.439 --> 00:07:26.659 we're merely speculating as exactly to who they are, 00:07:27.539 --> 00:07:29.079 but it is important to realize 00:07:29.079 --> 00:07:31.419 that they are true Christians, nonetheless, 00:07:31.680 --> 00:07:32.680 and his prayer for them, 00:07:33.339 --> 00:07:34.039 in verse 2, 00:07:34.120 --> 00:07:37.479 is for mercy, peace, and love to multiply. 00:07:37.480 --> 00:07:43.280 Now, for various reasons not worth explaining, 00:07:43.400 --> 00:07:44.600 we're going to circle back 00:07:44.600 --> 00:07:47.620 to the first two verses at the end of our time together, 00:07:48.400 --> 00:07:51.160 because I don't think they make full sense 00:07:51.160 --> 00:07:53.040 without reading verses 3 through 4 00:07:53.040 --> 00:07:58.500 to understand why Jude is setting the letter up as he does. 00:07:58.640 --> 00:08:00.740 So looking at verses 3 through 4, then, 00:08:01.460 --> 00:08:04.439 we're going to get into the body of Jude's letter. 00:08:04.620 --> 00:08:05.080 Verse 3, 00:08:05.080 --> 00:08:06.879 Jude transitions to the body, 00:08:06.879 --> 00:08:08.500 indicated by his second address. 00:08:08.620 --> 00:08:08.920 He says, 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:09.620 Beloved. 00:08:10.399 --> 00:08:12.680 And a very peculiar thing happens. 00:08:12.819 --> 00:08:15.259 He says he wanted to write about their, 00:08:15.560 --> 00:08:15.540 quote, 00:08:15.639 --> 00:08:17.040 common salvation. 00:08:18.159 --> 00:08:21.019 Now, this is pretty typical in Greco-Roman letters, 00:08:21.579 --> 00:08:23.439 to write about a general concern 00:08:23.439 --> 00:08:26.719 related to the state of the city or the nation, right? 00:08:26.740 --> 00:08:27.920 And they would use this phrase, 00:08:28.079 --> 00:08:30.659 common salvation or common well-being. 00:08:30.759 --> 00:08:32.000 You could also translate it. 00:08:32.440 --> 00:08:35.940 So this is a very typical Greco-Roman letter, 00:08:36.179 --> 00:08:36.860 in a sense. 00:08:37.740 --> 00:08:40.379 And they would write these kind of letters during times of war, 00:08:40.500 --> 00:08:42.279 during times of economic strife. 00:08:43.100 --> 00:08:46.820 But Christians developed their own usage of this phrase. 00:08:47.039 --> 00:08:49.779 And we see that right here in Jude's writing. 00:08:50.360 --> 00:08:53.240 For them, it was about salvation and life. 00:08:53.360 --> 00:08:57.419 This was inherently kingdom of God language. 00:08:57.419 --> 00:08:59.679 You might think or say, 00:09:00.679 --> 00:09:03.740 speak of this in terms of the welfare of the church, 00:09:03.819 --> 00:09:04.459 so to speak. 00:09:05.519 --> 00:09:07.240 But it is more than this as well. 00:09:07.399 --> 00:09:11.699 Common salvation refers to all of redemptive history, 00:09:12.379 --> 00:09:14.379 its past and its future. 00:09:14.379 --> 00:09:17.399 This includes events like the Exodus, 00:09:17.399 --> 00:09:19.439 the wilderness wanderings, 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:22.299 up to Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection, 00:09:23.039 --> 00:09:25.939 and to the future day when Christ will return to reign 00:09:25.939 --> 00:09:28.039 and gather his elect. 00:09:28.039 --> 00:09:28.819 In other words, 00:09:29.959 --> 00:09:31.539 Jude was desiring with all haste 00:09:32.539 --> 00:09:36.099 to write to them about the gospel in its fullness. 00:09:36.599 --> 00:09:39.740 He could not wait to write to them about this gospel. 00:09:39.860 --> 00:09:41.159 He seems to be expressing that 00:09:41.159 --> 00:09:42.939 he did everything he could 00:09:42.940 --> 00:09:46.040 to write about this gospel as quickly as possible. 00:09:46.960 --> 00:09:48.700 And yet, at the 00:10:20.560 --> 00:10:20.820 He says, 00:10:20.980 --> 00:10:22.420 For if I preach the gospel, 00:10:22.680 --> 00:10:24.420 that gives me no ground for boasting, 00:10:24.700 --> 00:10:26.920 for necessity is laid upon me. 00:10:27.580 --> 00:10:31.080 Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel. 00:10:31.220 --> 00:10:34.520 So what would make Jude decide to hold off 00:10:34.520 --> 00:10:38.360 on such an important and central topic? 00:10:39.820 --> 00:10:41.440 In the second half of verse 3, 00:10:41.440 --> 00:10:42.860 we see his explanation. 00:10:43.740 --> 00:10:43.960 He says, appealing to you to contend for the faith 00:10:51.580 --> 00:10:54.500 that was once for all delivered to the saints. 00:10:54.560 --> 00:10:57.460 What a powerful statement. 00:10:59.240 --> 00:11:02.000 Clearly, Jude views the faith of the saints 00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:03.520 as being under attack, 00:11:03.880 --> 00:11:07.160 which becomes more explicit in verse 4. 00:11:07.159 --> 00:11:10.799 So the answer to our question then is, 00:11:11.799 --> 00:11:12.919 and listen to this carefully, 00:11:13.539 --> 00:11:15.620 the only thing more important 00:11:15.620 --> --> 00:11:56.759 are in fact teaching a different gospel. 00:11:56.759 --> 00:11:59.240 And I want to be clear on this too. 00:11:59.799 --> 00:12:02.299 This does not minimize the gospel, 00:12:02.419 --> 00:12:03.259 what Jude is doing here, 00:12:03.299 --> 00:12:04.539 by waiting to share 00:12:04.539 --> 00:12:06.000 all these glorious truths. 00:12:06.319 --> 00:12:08.519 It actually emphasizes or heightens 00:12:08.519 --> 00:12:11.000 the importance and centrality 00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:13.319 of the gospel by defending it, 00:12:13.539 --> 00:12:15.340 to contend for it, 00:12:15.360 --> 00:12:16.460 to protect the flock 00:12:16.460 --> 00:12:18.259 from a false gospel. 00:12:18.399 --> 00:12:21.039 This is why he finds it necessary. 00:12:22.500 --> 00:12:23.860 So this verse contains 00:12:23.860 --> 00:12:26.539 his main exhortation to the church 00:12:26.539 --> 00:12:27.139 in his letter, 00:12:27.240 --> 00:12:29.480 to contend for the faith. --> 00:12:45.559 You could translate this word as fight, 00:12:46.079 --> 00:12:47.480 as this term was often used 00:12:47.480 --> 00:12:49.039 in struggles of war. 00:12:50.159 --> 00:12:52.959 And this verb is in the infinitive form, 00:12:53.079 --> 00:12:55.480 which simply means this fight is ongoing. 00:12:55.480 --> 00:12:57.539 Some have translated this phrase 00:12:57.539 --> 00:13:00.879 to carry on the fight for the faith. 00:13:00.960 --> 00:13:02.980 So it has that indefinite aspect. 00:13:03.159 --> 00:13:06.500 We are constantly contending for the faith. 00:13:07.100 --> 00:13:33.379 The faith that Jude refers to 00:13:33.379 --> 00:13:36.819 is the faith of true Christian thought and living. 00:13:38.240 --> 00:13:39.740 Jude is talking about the faith
