Courage is broadly defined as the ability or quality that enables a person to confront fear, 00:00:17.679 --> 00:00:23.920 ! danger, pain, difficulty, or uncertainty, even when feeling afraid or anxious. 00:00:23.920 --> 00:00:29.920 It is often associated with bravery, valor, and fearlessness, but does not require the absence 00:00:29.920 --> 00:00:33.300 of fear. Rather, it involves acting in spite of it. 00:00:33.740 --> 00:00:35.719 Okay? So that's the definition of courage. 00:00:36.940 --> 00:00:41.280 And every form of courage has its source, right? 00:00:41.679 --> 00:00:44.660 Strength is the strong man's courage, right? 00:00:44.679 --> 00:00:50.340 A strong man feels courageous because, hey, I'm strong and I'm stronger than other people, right? 00:00:50.980 --> 00:00:53.200 Athletic ability is the athlete's courage. 00:00:53.719 --> 00:00:59.540 If an athlete believes they're better than other athletes, then he is more apt to do more 00:00:59.539 --> 00:01:03.259 courageous things on the sports field or sports court. 00:01:03.920 --> 00:01:05.959 Training is the soldier's courage, right? 00:01:06.299 --> 00:01:10.980 If a soldier is well-trained and has better training than other people, whether it's shooting 00:01:10.980 --> 00:01:16.280 or other kinds of things, they feel a confidence, a courage on the battlefield because they've 00:01:16.280 --> 00:01:16.920 been trained well. 00:01:17.420 --> 00:01:19.939 Knowledge or intellect is the debater's courage. 00:01:20.579 --> 00:01:20.680 Okay? 00:01:20.680 --> 00:01:24.800 When debating someone else, if someone feels like they have superior knowledge or superior 00:01:24.800 --> 00:01:28.540 intellect, they have this courage and boldness in their debating. 00:01:29.600 --> 00:01:32.300 Moral conviction is the protester's courage, right? 00:01:32.700 --> 00:01:38.140 Those who protest confidently and boldly tend to have some kind of moral superiority, moral 00:01:38.140 --> 00:01:39.620 high ground that they have. 00:01:39.940 --> 00:01:41.480 And so it makes them courageous. 00:01:42.420 --> 00:01:46.800 And lastly, alcohol is the drunk man's courage or liquid courage as they would call it. 00:01:46.799 --> 00:01:47.599 So, right? 00:01:47.899 --> 00:01:51.959 And I don't really know what that's all about, but just they think that they're better than 00:01:51.959 --> 00:01:55.000 they are in that moment and they feel courageous, right? 00:01:55.579 --> 00:01:59.979 But it begs the question, what is the Christian's courage? 00:02:00.700 --> 00:02:02.019 What is the Christian's courage? 00:02:02.500 --> 00:02:03.780 Christians are to be courageous. 00:02:05.200 --> 00:02:08.919 That great verse on that, when spoken to Joshua, right? 00:02:08.960 --> 00:02:10.039 Be strong and courageous. 00:02:10.819 --> 00:02:13.840 And all throughout the Bible, we see this phrase. 00:02:13.840 --> 00:02:17.200 I believe it's actually there 365 times, which is perfect. 00:02:17.280 --> 00:02:18.420 You could read one for every day. 00:02:19.479 --> 00:02:20.120 Do not fear. 00:02:20.700 --> 00:02:22.560 It's one of the most reiterated commands in the whole Bible. 00:02:22.680 --> 00:02:23.280 Do not fear. 00:02:24.240 --> 00:02:25.719 But be courageous. 00:02:26.039 --> 00:02:26.560 Be brave. 00:02:27.140 --> 00:02:27.240 Okay? 00:02:29.060 --> 00:02:31.280 Well, what is the Christian's courage? 00:02:31.699 --> 00:02:34.219 Let's look at Peter and John's courage, right? 00:02:34.420 --> 00:02:40.560 In the book of Acts, there was some religious leaders who noticed something different about 00:02:40.560 --> 00:02:41.340 Peter and John. 00:02:41.340 --> 00:02:45.460 That Peter and John had courage and it was an unusual amount of courage. 00:02:45.560 --> 00:02:48.920 So my question to you this morning is, what was their courage? 00:02:49.039 --> 00:02:50.280 What is the Christian's courage? 00:02:51.039 --> 00:02:52.480 Let's look at Acts chapter 4. 00:02:53.159 --> 00:02:54.879 A little context before this. 00:02:55.300 --> 00:02:59.659 They had just walked into a city and at the gate was a man who was born lame. 00:03:00.319 --> 00:03:05.340 And he was asking for money and he said, silver and gold I don't have, but this I give to you. 00:03:05.340 --> 00:03:06.759 And he said, rise up and walk. 00:03:07.039 --> 00:03:08.140 And the lame man walks. 00:03:08.539 --> 00:03:08.699 Okay? 00:03:08.699 --> 00:03:09.959 So that's the context for this. 00:03:10.619 --> 00:03:13.899 Fast forward to Acts chapter 4, starting in verse 1. 00:03:14.479 --> 00:03:20.579 It says, and as they were speaking to the people, they being Peter and John, the priests 00:03:20.579 --> 00:03:24.899 and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them. 00:03:25.159 --> 00:03:29.099 Now, if you ever wonder, you know, what's the difference between the Pharisees and Sadducees? 00:03:29.099 --> 00:03:34.299 Sadducees, the Sadducees are the ones who didn't believe in the resurrection, which is why they're sad. 00:03:34.359 --> 00:03:34.639 You see? 00:03:35.680 --> 00:03:36.439 So you got that. 00:03:41.199 --> 00:03:42.620 So you have the Sadducees. 00:03:42.879 --> 00:03:43.959 That's an important context. 00:03:44.079 --> 00:03:45.199 They don't believe in the resurrection. 00:03:45.620 --> 00:03:45.879 Right? 00:03:45.879 --> 00:03:51.139 And that's who they're actually speaking to or who's coming around when they're speaking. 00:03:51.539 --> 00:03:56.759 As they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them. 00:03:57.439 --> 00:04:03.219 Greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. 00:04:03.300 --> 00:04:04.560 So that's why the Sadducees are annoyed. 00:04:04.900 --> 00:04:06.319 They don't believe in the resurrection of the dead. 00:04:06.319 --> 00:04:09.840 And these guys have the audacity to preach this. 00:04:10.060 --> 00:04:15.939 So right away, they're annoyed because they're proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:17.000 Verse 3. 00:04:17.579 --> 00:04:21.719 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 00:04:22.279 --> 00:04:27.060 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about 5,000. 00:04:27.639 --> 00:04:30.339 Remember earlier, 3,000 were saved in a day. 00:04:30.600 --> 00:04:32.879 Now it says there's 5,000 men. 00:04:33.079 --> 00:04:34.579 So you include women. 00:04:34.699 --> 00:04:36.180 That could have been close to 10,000. 00:04:36.180 --> 00:04:39.180 A lot of people are getting saved. 00:04:39.720 --> 00:04:42.620 Could be possibly from like 3,000 to 10,000 people. 00:04:43.379 --> 00:04:44.560 A lot of people are believing. 00:04:45.319 --> 00:04:52.660 On the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas, 00:04:54.280 --> 00:04:57.600 and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high priestly family. 00:04:58.199 --> 00:05:00.860 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, 00:05:01.439 --> 00:05:04.379 By what power or by what name do you do this? 00:05:04.379 --> 00:05:06.579 So in other words, like, who do you guys think you are? 00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:10.199 Like, who, who, who, who, where do you, where do you get your authority from? 00:05:10.620 --> 00:05:13.800 Who, who, who, who, who said that you could do this? 00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:19.519 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, rulers of the people and the elders. 00:05:19.519 --> 00:05:21.779 Now, note, this is rulers. 00:05:21.959 --> 00:05:23.779 These are people with power, right? 00:05:25.139 --> 00:05:26.919 Specifically, they have the power to throw people in jail. 00:05:27.560 --> 00:05:29.319 Clearly, they just threw Peter and John in jail. 00:05:29.819 --> 00:05:34.799 So, you know, we typically don't get afraid of people who don't have any power. 00:05:34.800 --> 00:05:39.699 But if someone actually does have power, especially the power to throw you in jail, 00:05:40.079 --> 00:05:46.220 you tend to have understandable concern or fear of what they might do, right? 00:05:46.620 --> 00:05:51.480 And so, you may be a little more timid in how you speak to them, or a little more nuanced, 00:05:51.580 --> 00:05:54.160 or maybe you don't want to even speak to them at all because you don't want to say anything 00:05:54.160 --> 00:05:58.000 that might cause them to be upset and throw you in jail, right? 00:05:58.740 --> 00:06:00.319 Or keep you in jail in this case. 00:06:00.319 --> 00:06:04.879 And so, Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, says to them, rulers of the people and elders. 00:06:05.779 --> 00:06:09.699 If we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, 00:06:10.079 --> 00:06:12.379 by what means this man has been healed, 00:06:13.300 --> 00:06:15.860 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel 00:06:15.860 --> 00:06:18.579 that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, 00:06:19.379 --> 00:06:20.560 whom you crucified, 00:06:20.959 --> 00:06:23.039 uh-oh, easy there, 00:06:23.860 --> 00:06:25.399 whom you crucified, 00:06:25.959 --> 00:06:27.579 whom God raised from the dead, 00:06:27.579 --> 00:06:31.240 by him this man is standing before you well. 00:06:31.500 --> 00:06:35.159 So, he doubles down on the whole resurrection thing, 00:06:35.639 --> 00:06:36.879 says Jesus rose from the dead, 00:06:37.199 --> 00:06:41.300 he then points the finger at them for crucifying the one who rose from the dead, 00:06:41.860 --> 00:06:45.379 so you'd think, okay, he might be maybe annoying them even more. 00:06:45.439 --> 00:06:47.979 If they were annoyed before, maybe they're even more annoyed now, right? 00:06:49.039 --> 00:06:51.240 By him this man is standing before you well. 00:06:51.479 --> 00:06:52.319 Verse 11, 00:06:52.319 --> 00:06:56.019 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, 00:06:56.219 --> 00:06:57.560 which has become the cornerstone. 00:06:57.899 --> 00:06:59.800 And there is salvation in no one else, 00:06:59.879 --> 00:07:02.139 for there is no other name under heaven, 00:07:02.519 --> 00:07:03.300 given among men, 00:07:03.579 --> 00:07:05.480 by which we must be saved. 00:07:07.860 --> 00:07:08.379 Now, 00:07:09.579 --> 00:07:13.959 this is the important verse in the context of courage, right? 00:07:14.279 --> 00:07:14.879 Verse 13, 00:07:14.879 --> 00:07:16.459 Now, 00:07:16.500 --> 00:07:18.939 when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, 00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:20.939 or some versions say courage of Peter and John, 00:07:21.459 --> 00:07:25.300 and perceived that they were uneducated common men, 00:07:25.699 --> 00:07:27.100 they were astonished, 00:07:27.439 --> 00:07:30.959 and they recognized that they had been with Jesus. 00:07:31.819 --> 00:07:32.000 Okay? 00:07:32.279 --> 00:07:32.980 So, clearly, 00:07:33.120 --> 00:07:33.759 Peter and John, 00:07:34.100 --> 00:07:38.439 the fact that he's not dialing it back because they're in jail, 00:07:38.939 --> 00:07:40.839 but actually dialing it up, 00:07:41.719 --> 00:07:42.060 says, 00:07:42.060 --> 00:07:42.379 oh, 00:07:42.639 --> 00:07:42.780 this, 00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:44.120 you know, 00:07:44.160 --> 00:07:44.680 they were probably, 00:07:44.860 --> they want. 00:08:01.519 --> 00:08:01.779 You know, 00:08:02.139 --> 00:08:03.100 kiss up to us, 00:08:03.480 --> 00:08:03.860 pander, 00:08:04.340 --> 00:08:06.040 because we have the power to keep you in jail. 00:08:06.660 --> 00:08:07.060 And, 00:08:07.899 --> 00:08:10.139 it's not like Peter and John were lawyers, 00:08:10.139 --> 00:08:10.560 who, 00:08:10.680 --> 00:08:11.019 you know, 00:08:11.019 --> 00:08:15.000 who had gone to school to speak to the rulers and authorities. 00:08:15.299 --> 00:08:17.000 These are unschooled ordinary men. 00:08:17.599 --> 00:08:17.779 Okay?
