00:00:40.700 --> 00:00:44.299 Each has worked through a Bible study on baptism. 00:00:44.500 --> 00:00:48.879 I had the privilege of sitting in an interview with each of them to hear about their clear 00:00:48.879 --> 00:00:52.579 profession of faith, their eagerness to follow the Lord Jesus in baptism. 00:00:53.240 --> 00:00:57.679 And so we have those steps just to make sure these people are genuinely converted to Christ. 00:00:57.679 --> 00:01:06.159 But I'm aware that there are people in the room who may not know what baptism is or what 00:01:06.159 --> 00:01:07.039 it means. 00:01:07.040 --> 00:01:10.120 So this morning, here's what I'd like you to do. 00:01:10.220 --> 00:01:15.440 I'd like to immerse you in what the Bible teaches about baptism. 00:01:15.680 --> 00:01:20.580 I'd like to submerge you into God's thoughts on baptism. 00:01:20.579 --> 00:01:27.819 I'd like to dunk you into four truths of what the Bible has to say about baptism. 00:01:28.939 --> 00:01:34.759 And in so doing, I think it will help explain why these three women are being baptized today 00:01:34.760 --> 00:01:40.260 and why, if you're a Christian and have yet to be baptized, why you should be baptized too. 00:01:41.400 --> 00:01:44.980 So we're going to look at four biblical truths about baptism. 00:01:44.980 --> 00:01:56.780 The precedent of baptism, the command to be baptized, the symbol of baptism, and the PSA of baptism. 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:00.600 So the precedent of baptism. 00:02:01.439 --> 00:02:09.300 In Matthew chapter 3, verses 13 through 17, we see the ultimate precedent in terms of baptism. 00:02:09.560 --> 00:02:12.379 Jesus himself was baptized. 00:02:12.379 --> 00:02:19.159 What we're going to see throughout the New Testament is a normative pattern of being baptized, 00:02:19.599 --> 00:02:21.340 and it starts with Jesus. 00:02:21.519 --> 00:02:26.879 And so if you'd open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 3, if you have a pew Bible in front of you, 00:02:27.139 --> 00:02:28.960 it's on page 961. 00:02:31.199 --> 00:02:39.180 And Jesus has gone to the Jordan River, and he's gone to who we call JTB, John the Baptist. 00:02:39.180 --> 00:02:44.000 And he's asked John the Baptist to baptize him. 00:02:44.400 --> 00:02:48.840 John the Baptist is a bit reluctant, and then Jesus finally convinced him. 00:02:49.319 --> 00:02:50.300 In verse 15, he says, 00:02:50.480 --> 00:02:54.740 Let it be so, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. 00:02:54.879 --> 00:02:56.260 So let's just be clear about something. 00:02:56.900 --> 00:03:00.719 John the Baptist was baptizing with what's called a baptism of repentance, 00:03:01.100 --> 00:03:03.140 of turning from your sin and turning to God. 00:03:03.139 --> 00:03:09.459 Jesus did not need a baptism of repentance, because he was without sin. 00:03:10.339 --> 00:03:15.219 And so what Jesus is doing here is he's modeling something for us. 00:03:16.519 --> 00:03:19.619 John the Baptist, he says, 00:03:20.019 --> 00:03:20.219 Okay. 00:03:21.139 --> 00:03:22.539 And then Jesus is baptized. 00:03:23.739 --> 00:03:27.639 He goes down into the Jordan, and John the Baptist pulls him up out of the Jordan, 00:03:27.639 --> 00:03:32.719 and when he comes up out of the water, the Holy Spirit descends upon him as a dove. 00:03:34.079 --> 00:03:38.500 And the Father, in a loud voice, says this, 00:03:38.979 --> 00:03:41.199 This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased. 00:03:41.279 --> 00:03:41.879 Verse 17. 00:03:43.719 --> 00:03:47.459 And so what we have here in the baptism of Jesus 00:03:47.459 --> 00:03:50.619 is the beginning of a precedent for Christians. 00:03:51.899 --> 00:03:53.339 Jesus is the ultimate example. 00:03:53.340 --> 00:03:54.460 Did you guys notice? 00:03:56.520 --> 00:03:59.080 The baptism of Jesus is a triune event. 00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:02.719 You have the Son being baptized. 00:04:03.080 --> 00:04:04.939 You have the Spirit descending upon him. 00:04:05.300 --> 00:04:06.879 And you have the Father saying, 00:04:07.659 --> 00:04:10.099 This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased. 00:04:10.780 --> 00:04:11.840 It's beautiful. 00:04:13.099 --> 00:04:14.140 It pleases God. 00:04:17.300 --> 00:04:20.519 Jesus himself was baptized. 00:04:20.519 --> 00:04:27.319 And so these three women today are going to follow Jesus in baptism. 00:04:28.319 --> 00:04:33.000 They're going to be baptized as their Savior and Lord was baptized. 00:04:34.620 --> 00:04:37.719 But there's another precedent from the book of Acts. 00:04:39.199 --> 00:04:43.139 If you're not familiar with the book of Acts, A-C-T-S, 00:04:43.819 --> 00:04:44.839 it's a New Testament, 00:04:45.399 --> 00:04:49.620 and it is the authorized history of the early church, 00:04:49.620 --> 00:04:51.280 the start of the early church, 00:04:51.420 --> 00:04:53.600 and the spread of the early church. 00:04:54.019 --> 00:04:59.620 And the early church spread as the gospel of Jesus Christ was proclaimed. 00:05:00.220 --> 00:05:03.780 All around the Mediterranean basin in that first century, 00:05:04.280 --> 00:05:06.699 there were people speaking of Jesus, 00:05:06.939 --> 00:05:08.819 of who Jesus was, God in the flesh, 00:05:08.879 --> 00:05:09.759 and what he's done. 00:05:09.819 --> 00:05:11.120 He's died on the cross for sinners. 00:05:12.160 --> 00:05:16.399 And as the gospel of Jesus is being proclaimed, 00:05:16.399 --> 00:05:18.959 there are people from all different walks of life 00:05:18.959 --> 00:05:22.060 who come to believe in this Jesus. 00:05:23.179 --> 00:05:24.399 And then they're baptized. 00:05:25.739 --> 00:05:28.539 So what we see in the book of Acts is a pattern. 00:05:29.519 --> 00:05:30.439 Christ is proclaimed. 00:05:31.959 --> 00:05:33.079 People believe. 00:05:33.859 --> 00:05:36.179 They repent of their sins and trust in Christ. 00:05:37.139 --> 00:05:38.259 And then they're baptized. 00:05:38.519 --> 00:05:39.599 Let me show you three examples. 00:05:39.600 --> 00:05:43.800 The first example is in Acts chapter 8. 00:05:43.920 --> 00:05:45.080 There's this guy named Philip. 00:05:45.240 --> 00:05:46.320 He's called an evangelist, 00:05:46.400 --> 00:05:48.640 which means he preaches Christ a lot. 00:05:49.920 --> 00:05:51.200 He ends up in a town. 00:05:51.320 --> 00:05:53.900 This is Acts 8, 12 through 13. 00:05:54.120 --> 00:05:55.260 He's in Samaria. 00:05:55.900 --> 00:05:58.939 And a number of men and women believe who are Samaritans, 00:05:59.020 --> 00:06:00.200 which was just extraordinary. 00:06:02.500 --> 00:06:03.920 And then they were baptized. 00:06:04.700 --> 00:06:05.439 So there's the pattern. 00:06:06.200 --> 00:06:06.860 There's the precedent. 00:06:06.860 --> 00:06:07.520 Very simple. 00:06:08.259 --> 00:06:09.060 Christ is proclaimed. 00:06:10.020 --> 00:06:10.819 People believe. 00:06:11.759 --> 00:06:12.639 And then they're baptized. 00:06:13.139 --> 00:06:15.540 They're not baptized and then believe. 00:06:16.180 --> 00:06:17.639 They believe and then they're baptized. 00:06:19.439 --> 00:06:20.600 Acts 16. 00:06:21.960 --> 00:06:24.800 Paul and Silas, well, 00:06:26.139 --> 00:06:29.759 they're in chains in a Philippian jail cell. 00:06:31.939 --> 00:06:33.660 God sends an earthquake, 00:06:33.660 --> 00:06:37.120 throws open the jail cell doors. 00:06:37.620 --> 00:06:39.140 It unshackles them. 00:06:39.680 --> 00:06:41.300 The Philippian jailer runs out. 00:06:42.580 --> 00:06:43.860 He's about to kill himself 00:06:43.860 --> 00:06:44.640 because he's thinking, 00:06:45.100 --> 00:06:48.180 all of my prisoners have now escaped. 00:06:49.540 --> 00:06:50.520 And Paul says, 00:06:50.720 --> 00:06:51.860 don't harm yourself. 00:06:53.660 --> 00:06:55.220 Do you remember what the Philippian jailer said? 00:06:57.420 --> 00:06:58.200 He said, 00:06:58.260 --> 00:06:59.220 what must I do to be saved? 00:06:59.220 --> 00:07:04.520 And then Paul and Silas explain to him, 00:07:06.200 --> 00:07:09.160 believe in the Lord Jesus Christ 00:07:09.160 --> 00:07:10.140 and you will be saved. 00:07:11.500 --> 00:07:13.460 Paul and Silas goes to the jailer's home, 00:07:13.900 --> 00:07:15.780 share that same gospel with the jailer 00:07:15.780 --> 00:07:16.600 and his household, 00:07:17.000 --> 00:07:19.500 and all of the household believes 00:07:19.500 --> 00:07:22.720 in what Paul and Silas are proclaiming 00:07:22.720 --> 00:07:23.760 about Jesus, 00:07:23.880 --> 00:07:24.620 that he's Lord. 00:07:24.780 --> 00:07:25.620 So there it is again. 00:07:25.620 --> 00:07:27.720 You have Christ proclaimed 00:07:27.720 --> 00:07:28.720 and you have people believe 00:07:28.720 --> 00:07:30.220 and then the whole household 00:07:30.220 --> 00:07:32.840 was baptized all at once, 00:07:33.040 --> 00:07:33.860 the scriptures say. 00:07:34.879 --> 00:07:36.120 So you see the pattern. 00:07:36.620 --> 00:07:37.399 Christ proclaimed, 00:07:38.259 --> 00:07:39.199 people believe, 00:07:40.019 --> 00:07:40.879 and then they're baptized. 00:07:43.060 --> 00:07:44.300 There's another example. 00:07:46.680 --> 00:07:49.480 And it's the example from Acts 18. 00:07:50.519 --> 00:07:52.680 Paul and Silas are now in Corinth. 00:07:52.680 --> 00:07:55.740 And in verse 8, 00:07:55.939 --> 00:07:57.400 they are testifying 00:07:57.400 --> 00:08:00.000 that the Christ was Jesus, 00:08:00.280 --> 00:08:01.199 that the Messiah 00:08:01.199 --> 00:08:04.259 that the Jews have been waiting for 00:08:04.259 --> 00:08:04.900 is Jesus. 00:08:06.500 --> 00:08:08.400 And there's a man named Crispus 00:08:08.400 --> 00:08:11.019 who is the synagogue ruler 00:08:11.019 --> 00:08:12.519 in Corinth. 00:08:12.699 --> 00:08:14.000 Well, he comes to believe 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:16.420 that Jesus is the Messiah, 00:08:16.620 --> 00:08:17.319 the Lord, 00:08:17.960 --> 00:08:18.600 the Christ. 00:08:19.759 --> 00:08:20.460 And Crispus, 00:08:20.579 --> 00:08:22.360 with many other Corinthians, 00:08:22.360 --> 00:08:23.340 believe 00:08:23.340 --> 00:08:25.500 and they were baptized. 00:08:26.960 --> 00:08:28.379 So Christ is proclaimed, 00:08:29.379 --> 00:08:31.439 a number of people believe, 00:08:32.279 --> 00:08:33.759 and then they're baptized. 00:08:35.120 --> 00:08:36.440 So what we have 00:08:36.440 --> 00:08:37.460 in the New Testament 00:08:37.460 --> 00:08:38.980 is a precedent. 00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:42.700 The book of Acts shows us 00:08:42.700 --> 00:08:44.259 a normative pattern, 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:45.720 Christ proclaimed, 00:08:46.139 --> 00:08:46.860 people believe, 00:08:47.340 --> 00:08:48.100 and then they're baptized. 00:08:48.100 --> 00:08:48.340 baptized. 00:08:49.240 --> 00:08:50.940 So if I can just take a step back, 00:08:51.340 --> 00:08:52.420 now what we've looked at 00:08:52.420 --> 00:08:53.060 is this. 00:08:53.960 --> 00:08:55.360 Jesus is the ultimate example 00:08:55.360 --> 00:08:57.180 of baptism. 00:08:57.399 --> 00:08:58.379 He himself was baptized. 00:08:58.960 --> 00:09:00.040 And then we see this 00:09:00.040 --> 00:09:01.560 as the gospel goes out, 00:09:02.080 --> 00:09:03.000 people believe, 00:09:03.580 --> 00:09:04.980 and then they too 00:09:04.980 --> 00:09:06.460 are baptized. 00:09:08.860 --> 00:09:10.040 And might I add just this? 00:09:10.039 --> 00:09:12.419 In Acts 8, 00:09:13.919 --> 00:09:17.039 where Paul 00:09:17.039 --> 00:09:19.839 is baptizing, 00:09:19.919 --> 00:09:21.079 or Philip is preaching 00:09:21.079 --> 00:09:22.599 and baptizing in Samaria, 00:09:23.319 --> 00:09:23.719 later, 00:09:24.099 --> 00:09:24.919 that same account, 00:09:25.179 --> 00:09:26.639 Philip preaches the gospel 00:09:26.639 --> 00:09:28.299 to this Ethiopian eunuch. 00:09:29.740 --> 00:09:30.879 And the Ethiopian eunuch, 00:09:31.480 --> 00:09:32.240 having believed, 00:09:32.399 --> 00:09:33.299 points to some water 00:09:33.299 --> 00:09:33.559 and says, 00:09:33.639 --> 00:09:33.799 hey, 00:09:33.980 --> 00:09:35.759 baptize me. 00:09:35.759 --> 00:09:39.819 And he went into the water 00:09:39.819 --> 00:09:40.500 and came out. 00:09:41.939 --> 00:09:44.240 Both in Jesus' example 00:09:44.240 --> 00:09:46.960 and in the Ethiopian eunuch's example, 00:09:47.200 --> 00:09:48.860 it's a baptism of immersion. 00:09:50.080 --> 00:09:51.759 Going all the way under the water 00:09:51.759 --> 00:09:52.860 and coming back 00:10:27.079 Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, 00:10:27.199 --> 00:10:28.819 it's a biography of Jesus. 00:10:29.539 --> 00:10:31.819 It's kind of the historical account 00:10:31.819 --> 00:10:32.919 of his birth, 00:10:33.639 --> 00:10:34.059 life, 00:10:34.059 --> 00:10:34.939 death, 00:10:34.939 --> 00:10:36.059 and resurrection. 00:10:36.059 --> 00:10:37.379 And by the time we get to 00:10:37.379 --> 00:10:38.619 Matthew chapter 28, 00:10:39.279 --> 00:10:41.879 Jesus has been raised from the dead. 00:10:42.599 --> 00:10:43.879 And now he is appearing 00:10:43.879 --> 00:10:45.019 to his
