00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:11.000
 Good morning everyone. Welcome to St Paul's this morning. My name is Steve. I'm the senior pastor here at St Paul's and great to be with you in church on this fantastic day.

00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:36.820
 What a day to be as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. In his book, The Rise of Christianity, the late American sociologist Rodney Stark, who himself not a Christian, showed that the early Christians, the very first adopters of Jesus as who he said he was,

00:00:36.820 --> 00:00:47.000
 they showed that they were incredibly different than their neighbours, remarkably different than the rest of the people in the Roman Empire.

00:00:47.000 --> 00:01:09.500
 And he goes through a bunch of how they were different. During two epidemics in AD 165 and the other one in AD 225, I think it was, which killed, both of them killed up to one third of the population of the Roman Empire each time.

00:01:09.500 --> 00:01:25.680
 He said that as others fled the cities and abandoned their sick and their dying in their homes and on the streets as they left, literally they just abandoned them where they were.

00:01:25.680 --> 00:01:39.440
 He said it was at those points that Christians stayed behind ministering to the dead and the dying and caring for them and losing their own lives in the process.

00:01:39.439 --> 00:01:47.840
 He made the point as well that Christians did not fight against their persecutors.

00:01:48.900 --> 00:01:56.280
 In other instances, there was open violence, there was guerrilla warfare against the Roman Empire.

00:01:56.400 --> 00:02:06.739
 The Christians didn't, but willingly went to martyrdom while praying for their captors with a deep sense of joy and contentment.

00:02:06.739 --> 00:02:23.740
 A further reason was that as the Roman Empire expanded, it was Christians who were crossing racial and cultural and social barriers to form new united communities

00:02:23.740 --> 00:02:36.500
 where those differences that had historically been resulting in open conflict were actually pushed down as being something that wasn't important

00:02:36.500 --> 00:02:41.699
 and that they were actually united communities reaching across the barriers.

00:02:42.240 --> 00:02:45.259
 So the minorities in society and so on.

00:02:45.259 --> 00:03:00.520
 So the question that it all raised was, why were the Christians so much more compassionate to the sick, forgiving of their persecutors,

00:03:00.800 --> 00:03:06.020
 more ethnically inclusive than anyone had ever seen before?

00:03:06.500 --> 00:03:14.740
 You know, was it just that they were just so, they were just liberal progressives and they were just clearly more ahead of their time than everyone else?

00:03:15.400 --> 00:03:19.080
 Were they just generally more positive people than everyone else?

00:03:19.419 --> 00:03:22.680
 Were they just nicer people than everyone else?

00:03:23.979 --> 00:03:25.520
 No, Stark would argue.

00:03:25.599 --> 00:03:26.180
 No, it wasn't.

00:03:26.180 --> 00:03:30.099
 It's because of the hope that they cling to.

00:03:30.099 --> 00:03:36.480
 Now, and Stark himself, not a Christian, would say it was because of the hope that they had embraced.

00:03:36.879 --> 00:03:47.000
 What they believed their future to be changed their life in the present so radically, as it does for everyone,

00:03:47.140 --> 00:03:50.700
 which is in the last couple of gatherings I've been talking about hope.

00:03:50.699 --> 00:03:53.819
 We are humanity, all people are hope-driven people.

00:03:53.919 --> 00:04:01.799
 Whatever we perceive the future to be, we will determine our present now, how we live it, and in fact, how well we live it.

00:04:02.179 --> 00:04:04.259
 All humans are hope-driven.

00:04:04.719 --> 00:04:09.459
 Whatever we perceive the future to be determines how we live in the present.

00:04:09.460 --> 00:04:15.719
 And the hope that radically changed the early Christians, what they themselves declared,

00:04:16.079 --> 00:04:21.079
 and what the Bible says and what the Christian church has maintained throughout history,

00:04:21.319 --> 00:04:29.900
 is that after Jesus was crucified, he was dead, he was put in a tomb by the people who crucified him,

00:04:30.100 --> 00:04:32.800
 he came back to life and appeared to his followers.

00:04:32.800 --> 00:04:40.319
 That is, the foundation and the dynamic of the early Christian hope,

00:04:41.160 --> 00:04:50.600
 what so transformed their lives, was the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

00:04:52.160 --> 00:04:57.540
 And what they declared and what the Apostle Paul declared, and you see it's in the New Testament,

00:04:57.540 --> 00:05:03.180
 and what I'm saying to you now, is that the Christian faith is of no value whatsoever.

00:05:04.700 --> 00:05:06.879
 It has no value whatsoever.

00:05:07.460 --> 00:05:12.700
 It is not livable, it's not plausible, it's not good in any way.

00:05:12.840 --> 00:05:19.640
 It will crush you if you try to live by it as a set of morals, something to be doped,

00:05:19.800 --> 00:05:21.960
 if the resurrection did not happen.

00:05:22.439 --> 00:05:23.900
 It's of no value at all.

00:05:23.899 --> 00:05:27.739
 I'm entirely wasting your time here this morning.

00:05:27.919 --> 00:05:30.139
 Well, I'm not, you are, wasting your time here this morning.

00:05:30.560 --> 00:05:34.979
 As we read, a little bit further down in 1 Corinthians 15, verse 14,

00:05:35.719 --> 00:05:41.039
 if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.

00:05:42.199 --> 00:05:48.719
 He goes on, we are to be pitied above all people if Jesus was raised from the dead.

00:05:48.720 --> 00:05:56.020
 But we can have the same certain hope that the early Christians have,

00:05:56.700 --> 00:06:02.760
 if we allow the resurrection of Jesus to speak to our mind, our consciences and our hearts.

00:06:02.800 --> 00:06:05.740
 And that's the kind of three-step journey we're doing this morning.

00:06:06.160 --> 00:06:07.900
 So, first of all, a certain hope.

00:06:08.300 --> 00:06:11.240
 Up on the screen, Aidan just read this to us.

00:06:11.240 --> 00:06:19.360
 1 Corinthians 15, 3-9 gives us the historical case for the resurrection of Jesus.

00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:24.620
 And there are three main lines of arguing here.

00:06:24.980 --> 00:06:31.160
 Three main lines of reasoning that draws to the conclusion that the resurrection actually happened.

00:06:31.240 --> 00:06:34.540
 The first line of evidence is the empty tomb.

00:06:34.540 --> 00:06:43.840
 It is without dispute, whether Jewish scholars, Roman scholars at the time, Christian scholars,

00:06:43.920 --> 00:06:47.340
 would all declare there was an empty tomb.

00:06:48.620 --> 00:06:55.900
 It says in verses 3 and 4 that Jesus was dead, he was buried, and on the third day, he rose again.

00:06:56.439 --> 00:06:58.700
 Now, it doesn't talk about an empty tomb there.

00:06:58.740 --> 00:06:59.780
 It's just implied.

00:07:00.060 --> 00:07:01.920
 He was dead, he was buried, he rose again.

00:07:01.920 --> 00:07:08.480
 In the same way, yesterday, for instance, I walked to Westfield.

00:07:08.680 --> 00:07:12.460
 I don't need to include in there, I used my feet.

00:07:13.340 --> 00:07:15.860
 It's just assumed when I say that I walked to Westfield.

00:07:16.160 --> 00:07:18.139
 So, it's assumed that the tomb is empty.

00:07:18.660 --> 00:07:20.460
 The rest of the New Testament talks about it.

00:07:20.860 --> 00:07:26.360
 The second line of evidence is the resurrection was witnessed by literally hundreds of people.

00:07:26.720 --> 00:07:29.460
 People who saw Jesus, who touched Jesus.

00:07:29.459 --> 00:07:40.139
 And Paul is writing these words somewhere between 15 and 20 years after the very first Easter events.

00:07:40.879 --> 00:07:42.939
 And that's why he says in verse 6,

00:07:43.500 --> 00:07:47.560
 most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep.

00:07:47.939 --> 00:07:50.599
 In other words, if you don't believe me, go and speak to them.

00:07:50.600 --> 00:08:00.140
 You know, there is no way that you can propagate a hoax like this when the same people are still alive.

00:08:00.879 --> 00:08:02.420
 Like, you can't do it.

00:08:03.360 --> 00:08:10.480
 And the third line of evidence is the changed lives of the people who met the risen Jesus,

00:08:10.660 --> 00:08:12.760
 what Rodney Stark was pointing to.

00:08:12.759 --> 00:08:17.339
 And Paul himself is an example of this in verse 9.

00:08:18.039 --> 00:08:22.620
 But he also could not have included this as a line of evidence

00:08:22.620 --> 00:08:28.879
 if the rest of the people who witnessed the resurrection of Jesus had not been changed

00:08:28.879 --> 00:08:36.319
 and had themselves not been testifying to what it was that they had saw with Jesus.

00:08:36.320 --> 00:08:39.240
 That's the three lines of reasoning.

00:08:39.240 --> 00:08:47.280
 The empty tomb, the eyewitnesses and the changed lives of those who saw Jesus.

00:08:47.660 --> 00:08:50.720
 And put together, they're very powerful pieces of evidence.

00:08:51.780 --> 00:08:57.879
 The early Christians could not have publicly declared the resurrection successfully

00:08:57.879 --> 00:09:00.540
 if there wasn't an empty tomb.

00:09:00.539 --> 00:09:02.699
 They could have done it.

00:09:04.079 --> 00:09:06.539
 And if there weren't eyewitnesses.

00:09:08.259 --> 00:09:13.039
 N.T. Wright, on his massive work on the resurrection of the Son of God, says,

00:09:13.419 --> 00:09:16.159
 one or the other you can kind of pull apart.

00:09:16.299 --> 00:09:18.439
 Put together, you cannot.

00:09:19.360 --> 00:09:23.659
 It's an incredibly powerful, powerful piece of evidence.

00:09:24.659 --> 00:09:27.699
 If there was only an empty tomb but no eyewitnesses,

00:09:27.699 --> 00:09:30.500
 then people would believe that the body was stolen.

00:09:31.299 --> 00:09:35.439
 If there were only eyewitnesses claiming to have seen him but the tomb had a body in it,

00:09:35.779 --> 00:09:41.879
 then everyone would conclude that these bunches of people are just hallucinating wackos.

00:09:43.500 --> 00:09:44.919
 You just need to open the tomb.

00:09:45.019 --> 00:09:46.039
 There it is right there.

00:09:47.339 --> 00:09:52.620
 And only if all were true, the empty tomb, the sightings,

00:09:52.620 --> 00:09:54.959
 the permanently changed lives of the eyewitnesses,

00:09:55.319 --> 00:09:58.779
 could Christianity have ever begun in the Roman Empire.

00:09:58.779 --> 00:10:05.519
 And so we go, well, that's a lovely little piece of history,

00:10:06.019 --> 00:10:07.379
 a little bit of an idea there.

00:10:07.439 --> 00:10:09.059
 What about us now?

00:10:09.980 --> 00:10:11.120
 We weren't there.

00:10:11.840 --> 00:10:16.139
 How are we supposed to believe if we weren't there?

00:10:16.379 --> 00:10:20.639
 And I'm totally glad you asked that question because that's ironically my next point.

00:10:20.639 --> 00:10:28.159
 And Paul gives us, the guy who wrote this in 1 Corinthians gives us an example of this in Acts 26,

00:10:28.399 --> 00:10:31.059
 which I haven't read out to you, but if you've got a Bible, you can flick Acts 26 if you want.

00:10:31.600 --> 00:10:34.699
 Paul, by this stage of his life, towards the end of his life,

00:10:34.759 --> 00:10:40.199
 is a political prisoner in Caesarea and is on trial before a guy named Festus.

00:10:40.200 --> 00:10:42.840
 He's the governor of Caesarea.

00:10:43.500 --> 00:10:49.320
 And Festus asked King Agrippa, he's the Roman appointed ruler of Judea and Galilee,

00:10:50.720 --> 00:10:58.280
 and he asked King Agrippa for his opinion on Paul because King Agrippa was in that area when all this transpired.

00:10:59.020 --> 00:10:59.980
 He was there.

00:11:00.480 --> 00:11:02.080
 He was the king.

00:11:02.080 --> 00:11:12.020
 And Paul talks in his defense in front of Festus and Agrippa about the birth, the life, the death, and the resurrection of Jesus.

00:11:12.600 --> 00:11:18.280
 And when he gets to the resurrection of Jesus, Festus just mocks him.

00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:21.900
 You are out of your mind, Paul, he shouts.

00:11:22.240 --> 00:11:25.060
 Your great learning is driving you insane.

00:11:25.060 --> 00:11:30.660
 Now he acknowledges Paul's not some sort of a peasant, you know, a simple man.

00:11:30.659 --> 00:11:37.439
 He acknowledges Paul is an incredibly, incredibly intellectual, philosophical, smart man.

00:11:37.639 --> 00:11:40.339
 And he's incredibly derogatory here of Paul.

00:11:40.639 --> 00:11:44.939
 You know, all of your PhDs, they're just driving you absolutely insane.

00:11:45.259 --> 00:11:46.240
 That's the sense of it.

00:11:46.519 --> 00:11:50.379
 And Paul comes back to him respectfully, doesn't fight fire with fire.

00:11:50.699 --> 00:11:54.679
 Verse 25, I'm not insane, most excellent Festus, Paul replied.

00:11:55.039 --> 00:11:58.720
 What I'm saying is true and reasonable.

00:11:58.720 --> 00:12:03.060
 But in other words, what I'm saying to you right now makes sense.

00:12:03.840 --> 00:12:08.960
 And verse 26 is Paul's appeal to the true and reasonable.

00:12:09.399 --> 00:12:10.639
 He turns to Agrippa.

00:12:11.920 --> 00:12:18.240
 This king is familiar with these things and I can speak to him freely.

00:12:18.240 --> 00:12:29.460
 I am convinced that none of this, what I've just said, has escaped his notice because it was not done in a corner.

00:12:30.940 --> 00:12:34.460
 Not done in a corner.

00:12:35.519 --> 00:12:43.919
 Paul is saying to Festus, when I'm talking here about Jesus and I'm talking about the resurrection of Jesus,

00:12:43.919 --> 00:12:48.699
 I'm not talking philosophically or emotionally or spiritually.

00:12:49.459 --> 00:12:51.639
 I'm talking historically.

00:12:53.319 --> 00:12:58.479
 Paul himself did not have a subjective experience of Jesus.

00:12:59.059 --> 00:13:02.199
 He has an objective experience of Jesus.

00:13:03.000 --> 00:13:06.139
 Paul didn't want to believe in Jesus.

00:13:06.139 --> 00:13:10.899
 But he had no alternative with the resurrection.

00:13:12.259 --> 00:13:16.840
 You see, unlike Festus, Agrippa knows the facts.

00:13:17.500 --> 00:13:21.899
 His family dynasty had lived in Judea for generations.

00:13:21.899 --> 00:13:32.319
 The events surrounding Jesus Christ were so significant that anyone who lived in that area around that time,

00:13:32.579 --> 00:13:40.279
 in Judea, in the past 20 years, could not have laughed off what Paul had just said in the way that Festus had just done it.

00:13:40.699 --> 00:13:42.279
 Could not have laughed it off.

00:13:44.379 --> 00:13:46.039
 Agrippa could not escape it.

00:13:47.299 --> 00:13:48.840
 The events were public.

00:13:48.840 --> 00:13:52.019
 His own historians had written about it.

00:13:53.399 --> 00:13:56.000
 Agrippa knew that the tomb was empty.

00:13:56.360 --> 00:14:00.080
 And he still did not have a plausible explanation as to why the tomb was empty.

00:14:01.420 --> 00:14:03.019
 It was a cold case.

00:14:05.280 --> 00:14:09.320
 And he knew, as the king, what the guards told him.

00:14:11.320 --> 00:14:12.780
 We were there all night.

00:14:15.519 --> 00:14:17.700
 The door was closed.

00:14:18.840 --> 00:14:22.759
 He knew what the eyewitnesses claimed.

00:14:24.280 --> 00:14:26.860
 But Agrippa did not want to deal with any of it.

00:14:27.879 --> 00:14:30.519
 Paul says to Agrippa, you know all this stuff.

00:14:31.379 --> 00:14:32.600
 You can't laugh it off.

00:14:33.019 --> 00:14:34.720
 You know I'm not crazy.

00:14:34.920 --> 00:14:37.580
 You know there's a lot of evidence of what I'm talking about.

00:14:37.960 --> 00:14:43.040
 You may not believe it, but you cannot ignore the facts because it's not done in a corner.

00:14:43.240 --> 00:14:45.019
 There is public evidence of this.

00:14:45.019 --> 00:14:50.539
 And notice that Agrippa doesn't say, join me Festus.

00:14:50.659 --> 00:14:52.220
 Oh, you're mad, Paul.

00:14:53.100 --> 00:14:53.759
 You're an idiot.

00:14:55.899 --> 00:14:59.360
 Notice he actually doesn't argue with Paul about the evidence.

00:14:59.759 --> 00:15:05.299
 He just jumps straight to the conclusion or the concession here in verse 28.

00:15:05.299 --> 00:15:10.459
 He said, do you think in such a short time you're going to make me a believer in Jesus too?

00:15:11.740 --> 00:15:13.979
 That's exactly what Paul's doing.

00:15:14.319 --> 00:15:25.039
 Because what happened in this space of time in Jesus with the resurrection is not just for Paul and for a bunch of followers.

00:15:25.039 --> 00:15:26.779
 It is for everyone.

00:15:28.899 --> 00:15:36.120
 And what's more, in the last two verses of Acts 26, Agrippa declares Paul to be innocent.

00:15:38.599 --> 00:15:39.620
 He's dodging.

00:15:39.799 --> 00:15:45.599
 Agrippa's dodging the real issue because he does not want to submit to the evidence.

00:15:47.039 --> 00:15:49.259
 You see, Christianity claims to be fact.

00:15:50.219 --> 00:15:51.559
 Fact for all people.

00:15:51.559 --> 00:15:59.219
 Not entirely watertight, conclusive evidence, but substantial evidence.

00:15:59.959 --> 00:16:01.659
 You need to wrestle with.

00:16:02.319 --> 00:16:06.059
 It claims historical evidence that can be tested.

00:16:07.159 --> 00:16:09.359
 Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

00:16:09.939 --> 00:16:12.579
 That's at the very heart of it and the foundation of it all.

00:16:13.459 --> 00:16:16.419
 And this is quite discomforting, I acknowledge, for modern people.

00:16:16.419 --> 00:16:21.659
 You know, many people prefer to say, well, you know, in our day and age, and I spoke about this a couple of weeks ago.

00:16:22.399 --> 00:16:25.659
 If it works for you to believe in Jesus, that's really good for you.

00:16:25.740 --> 00:16:28.939
 But you shouldn't insist on others believing because it might not work for them.

00:16:30.719 --> 00:16:35.599
 Paul did not believe in Jesus because it worked for him.

00:16:36.719 --> 00:16:38.500
 Or because it fulfilled him.

00:16:38.500 --> 00:16:45.480
 Jesus was a threat to every single thing he held dear in life.

00:16:45.820 --> 00:16:49.759
 Which is why he persecuted violently the first Christians.

00:16:52.159 --> 00:16:54.399
 He believed in Jesus because he had to.

00:16:55.340 --> 00:16:57.240
 The evidence left him with no choice.

00:16:57.240 --> 00:17:06.599
 And the reality is, every single person who's got breath in their lungs right now is in the same boat as King Agrippa in this moment and Festus.

00:17:07.039 --> 00:17:09.480
 We must account for the evidence.

00:17:10.220 --> 00:17:17.420
 Let the public facts of the resurrection of Jesus Christ argue with you.

00:17:17.420 --> 00:17:32.779
 How do we account for the fact that the enemies of Christianity would have loved nothing more than to be able to wheel the body of Jesus out in a wheelbarrow in the middle of the town square and just dump his body and say, there's your saviour right there.

00:17:34.019 --> 00:17:34.720
 They never could.

00:17:37.100 --> 00:17:41.180
 The Romans stationed their own soldiers at the entrance of the tomb and it was empty.

00:17:41.660 --> 00:17:42.980
 There was no dead body.

00:17:42.980 --> 00:17:56.799
 And the view that these scared disciples who all abandoned Jesus from his trial would suddenly, now that he's dead, agree with themselves to come up with his little hoax.

00:17:58.420 --> 00:18:06.220
 And then come together, steal the body of Jesus overnight at great risk of their life in front of the Roman soldiers.

00:18:06.900 --> 00:18:11.220
 And then die for something that they knew was the entire lie.

00:18:11.220 --> 00:18:14.960
 That is just insane.

00:18:15.680 --> 00:18:20.559
 There is not a single scholar worthy of any credit would even agree with that concept nowadays.

00:18:21.700 --> 00:18:22.620
 Christian or not.

00:18:23.920 --> 00:18:26.799
 And so just let the evidence argue with you.

00:18:27.839 --> 00:18:29.220
 I've got a bunch of resources.

00:18:29.519 --> 00:18:32.680
 I meant to bring them up here, but they're out there on the way to the bathroom.

00:18:33.400 --> 00:18:34.819
 Free resources about Easter.

00:18:35.019 --> 00:18:39.160
 Grab them, take them, digest them, explore them.

00:18:39.160 --> 00:18:57.480
 You see, in the end, if you don't want to grapple with the evidence as it stands, then we actually need to come up with another historical plausible reason why this Christian movement exploded like it did and continues to do so across the world.

00:18:57.480 --> 00:19:11.839
 Mostly at this point in South America, Asia, Africa, and amazingly in the last two years, great rising again in the Western world.

00:19:11.839 --> 00:19:19.259
 And when I say that grapple with it, I mean historically, plausibly grappling with it.

00:19:20.159 --> 00:19:28.000
 To say just, well, look, frankly, dead people don't come back to life, that's not historical argument.

00:19:28.339 --> 00:19:30.000
 That's a philosophical argument.

00:19:30.379 --> 00:19:31.919
 Not a historical argument.

00:19:31.920 --> 00:19:39.960
 And you have to come to that conclusion against the historical evidence.

00:19:42.140 --> 00:19:48.519
 You see, no Christian believes that the resurrection of Jesus was just a metaphor of triumphing through difficulty.

00:19:49.279 --> 00:19:57.060
 Or it's a psychological or just an experiential experience, an apparition of some sort without substance.

00:19:57.059 --> 00:20:07.299
 When we Christians say Jesus is risen from the dead, we're not speaking mythically, blindly, symbolically, spiritually, emotionally.

00:20:07.799 --> 00:20:09.359
 We're speaking historically.

00:20:10.919 --> 00:20:13.720
 He died for our sins, was buried.

00:20:14.839 --> 00:20:20.179
 He was raised to life on the third day, and he appeared to many eyewitnesses.

00:20:20.180 --> 00:20:29.960
 So the first step to certain hope is to accept the fact that the resurrection of Jesus really happened physically, in history.

00:20:31.500 --> 00:20:39.580
 However, accepting the facts by itself doesn't automatically produce life-changing hope.

00:20:41.000 --> 00:20:49.279
 We need to grasp also what it means if we are to know the power of the resurrection in our life.

00:20:49.279 --> 00:20:53.559
 And that's what really the rest of 1 Corinthians 15 unpacks in various ways.

00:20:54.639 --> 00:21:02.019
 In verse 9, Paul himself makes a reference to his past life.

00:21:02.160 --> 00:21:08.399
 When he persecuted, tortured, put into prison, approved the murder of innocent people.

00:21:09.119 --> 00:21:13.399
 And when he looks at his past, he says,

00:21:13.960 --> 00:21:16.660
 I'm not worthy to be an apostle.

00:21:16.660 --> 00:21:21.759
 I'm not worthy to be a messenger of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

00:21:22.080 --> 00:21:29.500
 And then in verses 10 through to 11, he says that, you know, despite all that,

00:21:29.660 --> 00:21:33.120
 I'm in fact the most successful apostle there is.

00:21:33.340 --> 00:21:36.820
 That is, I've worked harder and been more successful.

00:21:37.460 --> 00:21:38.960
 Why would he do that?

00:21:38.960 --> 00:21:44.120
 Why would he say, on the one hand, I'm not worthy.

00:21:44.380 --> 00:21:47.259
 I am, my life makes me not worthy.

00:21:47.380 --> 00:21:50.779
 And yet, on the other hand, I've done more than the rest of them.

00:21:51.480 --> 00:21:55.200
 How can you have such a confidence?

00:21:55.700 --> 00:21:58.420
 On one hand, as I said on Friday,

00:21:58.880 --> 00:22:01.960
 Paul on one hand is a self-beater and a self-prover.

00:22:01.960 --> 00:22:04.920
 How do you reconcile that?

00:22:06.360 --> 00:22:11.180
 Three times in verses 9 and 10, he uses the word grace.

00:22:11.620 --> 00:22:13.740
 It's what we just sang about a moment ago.

00:22:13.860 --> 00:22:18.920
 It's the gospel, the heart and the center of the Christian faith.

00:22:19.259 --> 00:22:24.640
 The gospel of Jesus Christ declares that people are so wicked that Jesus, in fact,

00:22:24.740 --> 00:22:27.000
 God himself had to step into our shoes,

00:22:27.000 --> 00:22:32.059
 die for us because we cannot save ourselves from God's judgment.

00:22:33.019 --> 00:22:37.960
 And it also declares that God was willing to do that for us.

00:22:39.420 --> 00:22:43.460
 You see, the Christian confidence is a realistic confidence.

00:22:44.259 --> 00:22:49.940
 The Christian realizes that they are more sinful than they ever imagined,

00:22:50.440 --> 00:22:54.259
 more worthy of condemnation than they ever imagined.

00:22:54.259 --> 00:23:01.200
 And yet, at the same time, more loved and accepted and affirmed

00:23:01.200 --> 00:23:03.119
 than they would ever dream.

00:23:03.839 --> 00:23:04.599
 Ever dream.

00:23:05.099 --> 00:23:06.119
 At the same time.

00:23:08.079 --> 00:23:12.799
 Paul's confidence is not because he's playing down his past.

00:23:13.039 --> 00:23:14.839
 You know, let bygones be guygones.

00:23:15.720 --> 00:23:16.900
 He's not ignoring it.

00:23:17.079 --> 00:23:18.879
 He's not trying to blame it on someone else.

00:23:19.000 --> 00:23:22.099
 You know, I didn't take my medication that day.

00:23:22.420 --> 00:23:24.160
 He's not trying to blame it on anything else.

00:23:24.259 --> 00:23:36.119
 He's not crushed by his past failures, nor is he affirmed because of his current success.

00:23:36.879 --> 00:23:40.200
 He doesn't say, well, my current success balances out the past.

00:23:42.299 --> 00:23:45.640
 See, Easter Day declares that Jesus has risen,

00:23:45.980 --> 00:23:49.579
 and because he has risen, the debt of sin is paid in full.

00:23:49.579 --> 00:23:53.980
 A Christian is no longer in sin.

00:23:55.379 --> 00:23:57.039
 They are in Jesus.

00:23:58.179 --> 00:24:00.419
 The slate has not just been wiped.

00:24:00.839 --> 00:24:02.919
 The slate has been destroyed.

00:24:03.539 --> 00:24:04.919
 It no longer exists.

00:24:06.980 --> 00:24:13.059
 To be in Jesus Christ means that God doesn't look at us in terms of our sin.

00:24:13.059 --> 00:24:19.539
 He regards us in terms of Jesus and his finished work.

00:24:21.539 --> 00:24:23.980
 There's another little book out there that you can take for free.

00:24:24.079 --> 00:24:26.639
 I think it's something like, I forget what it's called,

00:24:26.919 --> 00:24:28.839
 How Much Jesus Loves You, or something like that.

00:24:29.240 --> 00:24:30.700
 I forget exactly what the title is.

00:24:30.700 --> 00:24:36.759
 A cracking little book to understand how much his love is for you.

00:24:36.759 --> 00:24:44.879
 The more we grasp the reality of God's affirmation and approval because of Jesus,

00:24:45.259 --> 00:24:49.640
 the more we are free from our past failures,

00:24:50.220 --> 00:24:54.500
 and also our present moral and religious performance,

00:24:54.940 --> 00:24:56.900
 assuming that it matters something.

00:24:56.900 --> 00:25:05.840
 Christianity, unlike any other religion or philosophical system in the history of humanity,

00:25:06.580 --> 00:25:11.080
 does not start with, here is how you are to live.

00:25:12.180 --> 00:25:17.519
 It starts with, here is what Jesus has done for you in history.

00:25:18.800 --> 00:25:21.580
 And so Romans 8, 1 and 2 declare,

00:25:21.579 --> 00:25:25.759
 There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,

00:25:25.899 --> 00:25:29.299
 because through Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit,

00:25:30.019 --> 00:25:35.839
 who gives life, has set you free from the law of sin and death.

00:25:37.159 --> 00:25:40.500
 That, it clears your conscience.

00:25:42.159 --> 00:25:46.460
 We can have a certain hope, not just because it is historically plausible,

00:25:46.819 --> 00:25:49.980
 but also because of a clear conscience.

00:25:51.579 --> 00:25:55.139
 And that drives us to a personal hope which penetrates the heart.

00:25:55.399 --> 00:25:58.659
 You see, the resurrection of Jesus Christ speaks to our mind,

00:25:58.919 --> 00:26:01.919
 it speaks to our conscience, but also the deepest desire of our hearts.

00:26:02.980 --> 00:26:08.139
 The resurrection of Jesus, and I'm going to unpack this more next week, next Sunday,

00:26:08.699 --> 00:26:09.779
 there's a plug for you,

00:26:10.539 --> 00:26:14.039
 doesn't just give Christians hope for the future,

00:26:14.099 --> 00:26:15.839
 out there somewhere in the future,

00:26:16.220 --> 00:26:20.079
 but they have a hope that comes from the future into the present.

00:26:20.079 --> 00:26:25.339
 The Christian hope is a present hope that changes the way we live right now.

00:26:25.639 --> 00:26:30.319
 Notice what Paul says a little bit later in this chapter, in verse 30,

00:26:30.319 --> 00:27:00.299
 He says,

00:27:00.319 --> 00:27:19.759
 Now, it's not clear exactly what Paul's referring to here, historically.

00:27:19.759 --> 00:27:25.319
 What is clear, though, he's saying that every single day he faces death

00:27:25.319 --> 00:27:29.740
 because of his service of the resurrection of Jesus.

00:27:29.740 --> 00:27:39.920
 And he says that I don't care what it costs me to share the good news of the resurrection of Jesus.

00:27:41.120 --> 00:27:46.539
 He says right there that there, in fact, without the resurrection,

00:27:47.079 --> 00:27:52.440
 there is absolutely no reason to love your neighbour at all.

00:27:52.440 --> 00:28:01.740
 There is absolutely no reason at all to do anything good, anything for any other person,

00:28:01.740 --> 00:28:04.759
 if it wasn't for the resurrection of Jesus.

00:28:05.180 --> 00:28:07.740
 No reason at all to live for some other person.

00:28:09.200 --> 00:28:17.279
 Without the resurrection, we might as well eat and drink and enjoy the moment because tomorrow we die.

00:28:17.279 --> 00:28:26.680
 However, because Jesus has risen, not only has sin been paid, but death has been defeated.

00:28:27.079 --> 00:28:29.879
 The resurrection doesn't just free the conscious.

00:28:30.539 --> 00:28:37.879
 It actually frees us from fear in life now because death has been defeated.

00:28:37.880 --> 00:28:48.660
 That God himself has entered our world, died for our sin, risen again, confirming not just that our sin has been forgiven,

00:28:49.120 --> 00:28:51.860
 but that life is forever.

00:28:53.060 --> 00:28:59.240
 It frees us from fear of death to get on doing the things that he's called us to do.

00:28:59.460 --> 00:29:05.420
 As he writes at the very end of this chapter, death has been swallowed up in victory.

00:29:05.420 --> 00:29:07.700
 Where, O death, is your victory?

00:29:07.920 --> 00:29:10.180
 Where, O death, is your sting?

00:29:10.539 --> 00:29:14.500
 The sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law.

00:29:14.860 --> 00:29:16.200
 But thanks be to God.

00:29:16.460 --> 00:29:20.060
 He gives us the victory through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

00:29:21.420 --> 00:29:27.620
 In his book, Walking with God Through Pain and Suffering,

00:29:28.960 --> 00:29:32.500
 the late Tim Keller gives a great illustration.

00:29:32.500 --> 00:29:35.779
 It's illustration of another pastor, a guy named Donald Barnhouse.

00:29:36.119 --> 00:29:38.079
 American pastor, his wife had died.

00:29:38.940 --> 00:29:44.000
 And his wife died when their daughter was still very young, a young child.

00:29:44.160 --> 00:29:51.480
 And Dr. Barnhouse was trying to help his little girl process the loss of his mother.

00:29:52.220 --> 00:29:58.039
 And they were in the car one day driving along when this large truck passed them.

00:29:58.039 --> 00:30:04.480
 And the shadow of the truck sort of, you know, plunged the car into darkness as it went past.

00:30:05.659 --> 00:30:08.099
 And Barnhouse turns to his daughter and said,

00:30:08.740 --> 00:30:13.319
 Sweetie, would you rather be hit by the truck or by the shadow?

00:30:13.319 --> 00:30:20.759
 And she said, Well, you know, of course, you know, I'd rather be hit by the shadow, you know,

00:30:21.079 --> 00:30:24.099
 than the truck because the shadow can't hurt me, but the truck can.

00:30:25.419 --> 00:30:26.919
 And Barnhouse replied, Yes.

00:30:28.299 --> 00:30:31.960
 If the truck doesn't hit you but only its shadow, you're fine.

00:30:32.819 --> 00:30:38.059
 He said, Well, sweetie, it was only the shadow of death that hit your mum.

00:30:38.059 --> 00:30:42.240
 Only the shadow of death that went over your mum.

00:30:43.179 --> 00:30:44.659
 She's actually alive.

00:30:45.419 --> 00:30:48.059
 In fact, more alive now than she ever was before.

00:30:49.200 --> 00:30:56.839
 And that's because 2,000 years ago, the real truck of death in all its force hit Jesus on a cross.

00:30:56.839 --> 00:31:01.059
 And because Jesus was crushed.

00:31:03.159 --> 00:31:11.699
 And if we believe in him and his resurrection and the fact that he is alive now and reigning,

00:31:12.039 --> 00:31:17.259
 the only thing that could come over us right now is the shadow of death.

00:31:17.259 --> 00:31:28.379
 And the shadow of death is just simply our entrance into eternal life of glory and bliss.

00:31:29.900 --> 00:31:31.599
 That's the hope of the Christian faith.

00:31:32.680 --> 00:31:39.680
 George Herbert, speaking about death and of the hope of Easter Day,

00:31:40.299 --> 00:31:44.220
 said that what was once an executioner is now but a gardener.

00:31:44.220 --> 00:31:54.440
 Only in the gospel of Jesus Christ do people find such hope and confidence for life now.

00:31:54.500 --> 00:31:57.720
 Not just for the future, but life now, day by day.

00:31:58.079 --> 00:32:01.920
 The resurrection means you can face the worst things in life with joy and hope.

00:32:01.920 --> 00:32:06.819
 And if we allow the resurrection of Jesus to speak to our minds,

00:32:07.839 --> 00:32:13.100
 then we can know the freedom of a clear conscience, sins forgiven,

00:32:14.220 --> 00:32:18.240
 freedom from religious performance and vague hopes.

00:32:19.920 --> 00:32:25.779
 And then the power of the life lived without fear of death is what happens.

00:32:26.299 --> 00:32:27.839
 You see, the resurrection sets you free.

00:32:28.839 --> 00:32:34.880
 Free from this life enough to be brave and courageous and sacrificial and generous and patient and joyful.

00:32:34.880 --> 00:32:43.740
 Free now despite the circumstances because the resurrection of Jesus Christ guarantees the best is yet to come.

00:32:44.220 --> 00:32:53.759
 Easter Sunday is the most revolutionary day the world has ever known.

00:32:55.160 --> 00:32:59.160
 For an atheist, it's the day of the greatest hoax in human history.

00:32:59.779 --> 00:33:04.900
 For a Christian, it's the day that Jesus triumphed over death

00:33:04.900 --> 00:33:10.700
 and his promise of eternal life became a physical reality in history.

00:33:12.240 --> 00:33:18.600
 And if that's true, it's true for everyone in the world, not just for Christians.

00:33:20.540 --> 00:33:26.580
 You see, the resurrection of Jesus imposes a startling,

00:33:26.579 --> 00:33:32.980
 unavoidable, unavoidable, binary on everyone who encounters it.

00:33:33.319 --> 00:33:34.539
 Everyone who encounters it.

00:33:36.019 --> 00:33:42.039
 Either you believe it's a lie and Christianity is entirely worthless.

00:33:43.179 --> 00:33:46.019
 In all of its entirety, it is worthless.

00:33:48.319 --> 00:33:53.960
 Or you believe it happened and Jesus is God.

00:33:53.960 --> 00:33:56.319
 That's it.

00:33:56.840 --> 00:33:58.200
 Only those two options.

00:34:00.700 --> 00:34:06.559
 And so I say to you as, like me, fragile people,

00:34:08.240 --> 00:34:13.639
 living with the possibility of death at any moment,

00:34:14.440 --> 00:34:17.220
 in a world of great uncertainty right now,

00:34:17.219 --> 00:34:20.959
 people with a rise of people looking,

00:34:21.239 --> 00:34:24.279
 longing to grasp for some kind of hope for the future,

00:34:24.919 --> 00:34:26.139
 there is no better,

00:34:26.739 --> 00:34:30.919
 there is no more certain place to look for that hope

00:34:30.919 --> 00:34:33.559
 than the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

00:34:34.419 --> 00:34:36.099
 Let the evidence speak to you today.

00:34:36.779 --> 00:34:57.139
 Let the έ
