00:00:22.600 --> 00:00:27.000 We're going to be looking this morning at the story at the end of the chapter where 00:00:27.000 --> 00:00:30.359 Jesus heals a woman and a young girl. 00:00:30.800 --> 00:00:33.039 That's where we're going to be focusing our time. 00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:40.179 But I want to look back first to the beginning of this chapter, to the first three verses 00:00:40.179 --> 00:00:41.980 of Luke 8. 00:00:42.079 --> 00:00:43.439 Let me read those for you. 00:00:44.500 --> 00:00:49.799 Soon afterward, Jesus went on through cities and villages proclaiming and bringing the good 00:00:49.799 --> 00:00:51.299 news of the kingdom of God. 00:00:51.640 --> 00:00:56.900 And the twelve were with him and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and 00:00:56.899 --> 00:00:57.619 infirmities. 00:00:58.299 --> 00:01:01.960 Mary called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out. 00:01:02.119 --> 00:01:05.379 And Joanna, the wife of Chusa, Herod's household manager. 00:01:06.120 --> 00:01:11.959 And Susanna and many others who provided for them out of their means. 00:01:13.200 --> 00:01:19.239 We looked at these verses on our way through Luke's gospel a few weeks ago when 50-some 00:01:19.239 --> 00:01:21.519 of our women were on a retreat. 00:01:21.519 --> 00:01:27.859 I thought this morning would be an appropriate one to revisit them before we leave this chapter 00:01:27.859 --> 00:01:29.340 of Luke's gospel. 00:01:30.319 --> 00:01:34.519 Our passage this morning does feature Jesus healing two women. 00:01:35.659 --> 00:01:40.459 But the passage is not primarily about the fact that they are female. 00:01:40.659 --> 00:01:43.659 It's just not the main focus of it. 00:01:43.659 --> 00:01:51.359 However, in these verses, at the beginning of Luke 8, the gender of the people following 00:01:51.359 --> 00:01:53.579 Jesus is significant. 00:01:54.219 --> 00:01:58.219 They're providing for his ministry, serving him and his disciples. 00:01:58.459 --> 00:02:01.420 And it's highlighted that there are women there. 00:02:01.759 --> 00:02:09.280 And that's significant because Jesus honors women among his followers in a way that is completely 00:02:09.280 --> 00:02:16.719 counter-cultural for his day and in particular for a Jewish rabbi in these days. 00:02:16.719 --> 00:02:26.099 It says, many women, many women are traveling among his followers and using their gifts and graces 00:02:26.099 --> 00:02:29.920 to support the ministry of Jesus and his kingdom. 00:02:31.099 --> 00:02:37.860 Last time when we paused briefly, I said this is a good reminder to us that Jesus is good news 00:02:37.860 --> 00:02:41.220 of great joy for all people. 00:02:41.680 --> 00:02:47.900 That the new community he's building includes women as well as others who were often excluded 00:02:47.900 --> 00:02:49.300 in his day. 00:02:50.360 --> 00:02:56.280 I challenged us, there were a lot of men here that morning, to consider how we treat the women 00:02:56.280 --> 00:02:58.840 God has placed in our community. 00:02:59.960 --> 00:03:00.900 Do we honor them? 00:03:01.640 --> 00:03:02.340 Value them? 00:03:03.140 --> 00:03:04.800 Thank God for them? 00:03:04.800 --> 00:03:09.780 And work to promote the use of their gifts in the life of the church. 00:03:10.320 --> 00:03:12.520 We must do that. 00:03:14.040 --> 00:03:20.900 But since many of you ladies are back today, let me speak to our women and young girls for 00:03:20.900 --> 00:03:21.980 just a minute this morning. 00:03:23.640 --> 00:03:25.620 This is something I hope you already know. 00:03:26.840 --> 00:03:28.820 But Jesus treasures you. 00:03:28.819 --> 00:03:34.979 You are so precious to him and so significant in his kingdom. 00:03:35.500 --> 00:03:37.239 He would have you to know that. 00:03:37.459 --> 00:03:45.379 No matter how discounted or marginalized or taken for granted or mistreated you may feel 00:03:45.379 --> 00:03:49.340 by anyone else, Jesus honors you. 00:03:50.199 --> 00:03:53.479 And your value is not merely in being female. 00:03:53.479 --> 00:04:02.399 God created us, man and woman, male and female, in his image with unique and important gifts 00:04:02.399 --> 00:04:05.500 that we might reflect his image in this world. 00:04:06.699 --> 00:04:10.259 And so you, ladies, are image bearers. 00:04:10.579 --> 00:04:15.539 You bear the image of the king of the universe, your God. 00:04:15.539 --> 00:04:19.879 You all reflect it to us in a variety of ways. 00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:25.279 He has made you women who are like him, creative. us so much about what that means and looks like. 00:04:39.399 --> 00:04:46.939 Women who are like him, orderly, in the midst of family and work chaos. 00:04:48.259 --> 00:04:52.620 Women who are like him, gentle and patient. 00:04:53.579 --> 00:04:54.719 And that's so needed. 00:04:57.019 --> 00:05:01.979 Listen, Jesus loves you and who he has made you to be. 00:05:01.979 --> 00:05:08.519 And his kingdom community should always honor and engage women as he did. 00:05:08.519 --> 00:05:14.979 We as the church are not always known for doing that well to our shame. 00:05:15.899 --> 00:05:23.620 Any Christian community is weakened when it neglects to engage well with its godly women. 00:05:24.319 --> 00:05:26.740 And so I would say to you women this morning, 00:05:27.339 --> 00:05:33.439 we are a weaker reflection of the image of our God without you. 00:05:33.439 --> 00:05:41.740 We are weaker witnesses to the glory of his grace to this community that he's placed us in. 00:05:42.060 --> really neat juxtaposition of characters who encounter Jesus. 00:07:52.580 --> 00:08:00.360 Remember that these are the last two episodes in a series of four miracles displaying the incredible power 00:08:00.360 --> 00:08:04.120 and the divine deliverance that Jesus brings. 00:08:04.120 --> 00:08:07.560 He's already calmed the storm with a word. 00:08:07.560 --> 00:08:13.860 He's already spoken and demons came out of a man who'd been possessed for years. 00:08:14.980 --> 00:08:22.120 And now his power over things that are beyond our control is on display again in this passage. 00:08:22.120 --> 00:08:31.680 You'll notice as we read that he exercises authority over a disease that it makes clear to point out no doctor has been able to touch. 00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:45.139 There's so many rich threads in these people and in Jesus' interaction with them. 00:08:45.139 --> 00:08:53.059 That we're just going to walk right through the story together this morning and then we'll ask some questions of ourselves at the end. 00:08:53.559 --> 00:08:57.480 The story opens in verse 40 of Luke 8. 00:08:57.480 --> 00:09:04.720 Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him for they were all waiting for him. 00:09:04.899 --> 00:09:12.580 When Jesus returned from having been across the sea healing the demoniac, he comes back and there's a crowd waiting for him. 00:09:13.180 --> 00:09:15.440 They'll be here through much of the story. 00:09:15.440 --> 00:09:22.700 Many witnesses of these events and the historicity of what's going on here in this passage. 00:09:23.220 --> 00:09:28.340 And these crowds coming around Jesus are all so close to him we'll see as we go through. 00:09:28.460 --> 00:09:32.420 But at this moment, at the beginning of the passage, all of a sudden the crowds part. 00:09:33.600 --> 00:09:35.220 And make way for someone. 00:09:35.220 --> 00:09:38.680 You hear the whispers running through, step back. 00:09:38.920 --> 00:09:39.860 It's Jairus. 00:09:40.320 --> 00:09:41.180 It's Jairus. 00:09:41.340 --> 00:09:42.000 Step back. 00:09:42.700 --> 00:09:43.940 And Jairus shows up. 00:09:44.040 --> 00:09:48.440 There came a man named Jairus who was a ruler of the synagogue. 00:09:49.379 --> 00:09:57.960 And falling at Jesus' feet, he implored him to come to his house for he had an only daughter about 12 years of age. 00:09:58.399 --> 00:10:00.279 And she was dying. 00:10:01.940 --> 00:10:04.560 Jairus is a ruler of the local synagogue. 00:10:04.559 --> 00:10:09.559 His position is one where he's deciding who's going to read the law this week. 00:10:09.679 --> 00:10:12.000 Who will be teaching on the Sabbath. 00:10:12.559 --> 00:10:15.500 How do we keep our religious practices in line. 00:10:15.879 --> 00:10:19.119 He's a guy who is ordering things. 00:10:19.279 --> 00:10:20.879 Who is well connected. 00:10:21.659 --> 00:10:24.439 Well respected in the community. 00:10:26.159 --> 00:10:30.699 But Jesus and the synagogue people in general, the leaders especially, 00:10:31.219 --> 00:10:33.419 they haven't been getting along real great, have they? 00:10:33.419 --> 00:10:38.099 In fact, already as we've seen in Luke's gospel, Jesus has been run out of synagogues. 00:10:38.879 --> 00:10:42.159 Oftentimes the reception has not been warm. 00:10:42.539 --> 00:10:49.419 Jairus and his buddies, other synagogue leaders, were probably looking to avoid this controversial Jesus figure. 00:10:49.419 --> 00:10:54.419 But now Jairus is desperate. 00:10:54.419 --> 00:10:58.519 His life has been disrupted. 00:10:59.019 --> 00:11:02.599 He's used to it being organized and under control. 00:11:03.159 --> 00:11:04.620 He's confident and capable. 00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:09.559 But now his little girl is seriously ill. 00:11:09.559 --> 00:11:15.779 And he comes and throws himself at Jesus' feet to beg for help. 00:11:17.439 --> 00:11:21.119 Perhaps many of us can relate to Jairus. 00:11:22.119 --> 00:11:23.879 Successful professional. 00:11:25.259 --> 00:11:26.699 Respected citizen. 00:11:28.459 --> 00:11:29.539 Orderly life. 00:11:29.539 --> 00:11:32.719 Things look pretty good. 00:11:32.719 --> 00:11:34.120 Things seem to be going alright. 00:11:35.399 --> 00:11:39.579 But then something interrupts your idyllic life. 00:11:40.719 --> 00:11:44.360 Shatters your controlled world. 00:11:44.919 --> 00:11:52.579 In this case, for Jairus, the sickness of his beloved daughter that no one can seem to help. 00:11:52.580 --> 00:12:02.320 I don't know what it may have been or may yet be in your life that would interrupt and break in like that. 00:12:03.379 --> 00:12:07.120 But Jairus, when it happens, finding himself in great need does what? 00:12:07.879 --> 00:12:10.379 He runs to Jesus. 00:12:11.020 --> 00:12:13.940 And Jesus begins to go with him to his home. 00:12:14.500 --> 00:12:14.700 Phew! 00:12:15.660 --> 00:12:17.120 It's going to be okay, right? 00:12:17.460 --> 00:12:18.960 Jesus is coming. 00:12:20.560 --> 00:12:22.080 My little girl, she's going to be alright. 00:12:22.080 --> 00:12:24.960 You can see Jairus' spirits rise. 00:12:25.720 --> 00:12:30.300 But then as Jesus in these growing crowds, because this is quite an event, 00:12:30.560 --> 00:12:34.139 they begin to squeeze through the streets to Jairus' house. 00:12:34.300 --> 00:12:38.639 Someone very different from Jairus shows up. 00:12:39.820 --> 00:12:40.820 Verse 43. 00:12:41.480 --> 00:12:47.100 There was a woman who had a discharge of blood for 12 years. 00:12:48.020 --> 00:12:50.860 And though she had spent all her living on physicians, 00:12:50.860 --> 00:12:55.039 she could not be healed by anyone. 00:12:55.039 --> 00:13:03.379 Let me try to paint a picture of this woman's life for you from what we know of Jewish law and culture here. 00:13:04.320 --> 00:13:10.379 She has had a discharge of blood for 12 years consecutively. 00:13:11.180 --> 00:13:12.440 Doctors can't fix it. 00:13:12.500 --> 00:13:13.899 It's only getting worse. 00:13:13.899 --> 00:13:15.360 She's tried everything. 00:13:16.039 --> 00:13:18.860 But the bleeding hasn't stopped. 00:13:20.019 --> 00:13:23.459 Listen to what Numbers tells us is reality for her. 00:13:24.019 --> 00:13:25.860 Numbers chapter 5 at verse 1. 00:13:26.000 --> 00:13:29.600 God gives commands to his people for how they are to operate. 00:13:29.799 --> 00:13:31.279 He spoke to Moses saying, 00:13:31.279 --> 00:13:38.959 Command the people of Israel that they put out of the camp everyone who is leprous or has a discharge. 00:13:39.079 --> 00:13:40.079 There's her problem. 00:13:40.919 --> 00:13:43.539 And everyone who's unclean through contact with the dead. 00:13:43.959 --> 00:13:48.100 You shall put out both male and female, putting them outside the camp, 00:13:48.240 --> 00:13:53.639 that they may not defile their camp in the midst of which I dwell. 00:13:53.639 --> 00:13:59.220 This woman is religiously and socially outcast. 00:13:59.860 --> 00:14:02.220 She is not allowed in. 00:14:02.340 --> 00:14:05.159 Literally, she's outside the camp consistently. 00:14:06.039 --> 00:14:15.199 And when she comes in, Leviticus 15 has a whole litany of descriptions of restrictions for such a person. 00:14:16.120 --> 00:14:19.899 Restrictions like if she sits on something, it becomes unclean. 00:14:19.899 --> 00:14:25.860 If she touches someone, he becomes unclean. 00:14:26.740 --> 00:14:34.459 So if she even was married at some point, it's a good chance she's no longer married in this culture. 00:14:35.759 --> 00:14:44.559 She's ceremonially unclean, so no temple, no worship, no being near the presence of God, 00:14:44.659 --> 00:14:49.500 His holy dwelling among His people, she's not allowed there. 00:14:49.899 --> 00:14:52.799 She's not been allowed to touch anyone. 00:14:52.799 --> 00:14:58.399 And no one has been supposed to touch her for 12 years. 00:14:59.740 --> 00:15:02.419 Feel that pain for just a minute. 00:15:03.939 --> 00:15:06.159 No one's supposed to touch you. 00:15:06.419 --> 00:15:07.179 Unclean. 00:15:08.000 --> 00:15:08.500 Unworthy. 00:15:10.360 --> 00:15:15.500 Maybe you've had chronic pain or illness yourself. 00:15:15.500 --> 00:15:20.000 It can be physically and emotionally devastating, right? 00:15:20.399 --> 00:15:24.799 As it drags on month after month, year after year. 00:15:25.600 --> 00:15:33.480 Now, add to that the social humiliation and isolation, some of which you may also have felt. 00:15:33.600 --> 00:15:35.399 But this woman definitely had. 00:15:35.399 --> 00:15:38.659 The religious distance. 00:15:39.299 --> 00:15:40.679 Not being good enough. 00:15:41.459 --> 00:15:45.299 Feeling not even God would have you near. 00:15:46.199 --> 00:15:49.860 Perhaps wondering about that and what it meant for you. 00:15:49.860 --> 00:15:55.360 Let's contrast this woman with Jairus for just a minute. 00:15:56.159 --> 00:15:57.240 He's a man. 00:15:58.240 --> 00:15:59.379 And she is a woman. 00:15:59.960 --> 00:16:04.360 Adding to that perhaps initial difficulty, he runs the synagogue. 00:16:05.220 --> 00:16:08.180 She's banned from the synagogue. 00:16:09.480 --> 00:16:10.860 He's financially stable. 00:16:10.940 --> 00:16:11.560 Good job. 00:16:12.039 --> 00:16:14.159 She has spent all she has trying to get a cure. 00:16:14.220 --> 00:16:15.019 Now she's broke. 00:16:15.019 --> 00:16:19.279 Look, he's socially in. 00:16:19.740 --> 00:16:20.899 People know Jairus. 00:16:21.500 --> 00:16:22.639 They want him around. 00:16:23.159 --> 00:16:25.799 They want to be known by him, liked by him. 00:16:26.240 --> 00:16:29.860 She's socially out in about every way you could imagine. 00:16:29.980 --> 00:16:33.179 No one enjoys hanging around with her. 00:16:34.360 --> 00:16:41.279 But notice that in this story, these two very different people are united in the same way. 00:16:41.279 --> 00:16:46.899 Both of them come together because they have a common need. 00:16:46.980 --> 00:16:48.319 They're both desperate, aren't they? 00:16:49.759 --> 00:16:50.319 Desperate. 00:16:50.959 --> 00:16:52.939 My daughter, 12-year-old girl. 00:16:54.699 --> 00:16:57.100 My illness for 12 years. 00:16:57.959 --> 00:16:59.139 Nothing can be done. 00:16:59.399 --> 00:17:00.839 And what do they do in their desperation? 00:17:01.059 --> 00:17:03.100 They run to Jesus. 00:17:03.220 --> 00:17:03.899 Both of them. 00:17:04.619 --> 00:17:10.759 We find two very different people following a very similar path now to Jesus. 00:17:12.160 --> 00:17:20.420 So as this woman desperately squeezes through the crowd, you can imagine it must have been quite a crowd for her to hide and be slipping in. 00:17:20.660 --> 00:17:23.279 She's probably concerned the whole time she'll be recognized. 00:17:23.879 --> 00:17:27.700 Someone will get angry with her for touching them and making them unclean. 00:17:29.039 --> 00:17:30.700 But she finally reaches out. 00:17:31.359 --> 00:17:32.339 She gets close enough. 00:17:32.420 --> 00:17:33.819 I can just touch Jesus. 00:17:33.819 --> 00:17:35.879 Verse 44. 00:18:08.339 --> 00:18:11.000 Jesus said, who was it that touched me? 00:18:12.539 --> 00:18:14.939 And when all denied it, not me. 00:18:15.079 --> 00:18:15.959 I didn't touch him. 00:18:16.279 --> 00:18:18.159 Probably a lot of people had bumped into him. 00:18:19.119 --> 00:18:20.379 Everybody says, not me. 00:18:20.380 --> 00:18:23.200 And Peter says, come on. 00:18:23.600 --> 00:18:24.380 Come on, Jesus. 00:18:25.120 --> 00:18:28.160 Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you. 00:18:29.420 --> 00:18:31.860 But Jesus insists, no. 00:18:32.960 --> 00:18:34.120 Someone rushing toward Jairus' house, he stops. 00:18:47.700 --> 00:18:52.980 He's concerned for her. 00:18:54.720 --> 00:18:56.539 Jesus sees the poor woman. 00:18:57.759 --> 00:19:01.559 Their eyes meet and
